As long as 3,000 years ago, an ancient kind of polo, called “Chovgan”, was played at the Caspian Sea. It was a very ambitious idea M. Ahadpur Khangah had in mind when he began planning the first polo event in Azerbaijan. By hosting the first Arena Polo World Cup Azerbaijan in Baku early in September, the local entrepreneur and owner of the title sponsor Milla has proven: Azerbaijan is ready to host the fast sport in its modern version as well. Reto Gaudenzi (World Polo), polo visionary from Switzerland, was responsible for the perfect organisation of the huge polo debut in cooperation with World Polo and local partners.
After the successful premiere of the first polo tournament, another step towards becoming a polo nation is done: Since mid October, Azerbaijan is full member of the Federation of International Polo (FIP).
Retu Gaudenzi, delegate of Azerbaijan for the FIP: “’Polo is coming home’ was the motto of the first Azerbaijan Polo World Cup! The success was fantastic, the whole world reported on it. Now Azerbaijan has been admitted to the family of the FIP. Polo is home now, all the way!”
