In front of completely filled audience tribunes (3,500 spectators) the Arena Polo World Cup Azerbaijan started powerful into its second evening. Traditional Chovgan and equally tight Polo matches regarding the results made the day.
With a traditional Chovgan Polo Exhibition and matches between Europe representing sponsor Baltika and England/Bentley as well as Argentina and USA the second polo day in Azerbaijan’s capital Baku took place Saturday evening. Obviously it took the players a little while to get into the game and getting familiar with the horses imported to Baku six weeks ago from Argentina. Up to chukka number four both teams scored only two goals each. Several brilliant chances to score goals through penalty shots were missed by the English team. In the last seconds of the match Thomas Winter (+6) scored and made his Team Europe win absolutely tightly with 3-2.
Even tighter but throughout faster was the game of USA / Montblanc against Argentina representing Chopard. Strong and dynamic single actions and a dangerous Matias Vial Perez (+7) from Chile made Team USA leading 2-1 in the third chukka. Time was running in the fourth chukka but none of the teams came to clear actions. At the end of Chukka four Adrian Laplacette (+7) realised the most counting goal of the day for his team Argentina / Chopard and brought the score to a final 3-2. Fantastic polo, an enthusiastic audience and most competitive action – that was polo at it’s best. We are looking forward to the semi-finals and finals today. Europe and Argentina will compete for the title, while England and USA will clash for the third place of the Polo World Cup Azerbaijan.
