Christian Grimme and Thomas Winter win at Beach Polo!

Once again the weekend of Pentecost attracted numerous polo enthusiasts to Hörnum at Sylt. In the seventh edition of the Julius Baer Beach Polo World Cup Sylt on 7th and 8th June, six teams competed against each other and fought for the coveted trophy. In the end, team Lanson with Christian Grimme (0) and Thomas Winter (+4) won in the finals against team Julius Baer with Sven Schneider (+3) and Federico Heinemann (+2) by a large margin, 11-5. René Kleinlugtenbelt (0) and Patrick Maleitzke (+3) of team Lafina were placed third.

Patrick Maleitzke of team Lafina, who was awarded as Most Valubale Player of the tournament, experienced firsthand how dangerous polo can be: On Saturday, he was hit by a stick on his chin, the wound had to be stitched at the hospital afterwards. But his losing streak wasn’t over this time. On Sunday he was hit by a stick at the same point at his chin again and had to be stitched once more. According to the circumstances Patrick Maleitzke is doing well by now.

At team J.J. Darboven, Lukas Sdrenka (+2) filled in for Augstin Kronhaus (+3) who couldn’t participate in the tournament short-term.

There also were some celebrities among the guests: The actress Mariella Ahrens, Michael Zorc, former football player of Borussia Dortmund and current sporting director of the club, as well as H.P. Baxxter of Scooter did not miss the matches.

Organizer Stephanie Schneider was enthusiastic: “It was the best and most successful tournament for Beach Polo at Sylt! Especially the new venue with the beach polo arena on the beach promenade in Hörnum has proven successfully. The viewers stood in four to five rows at the polo field. Also the VIP tent was crowded, all commended the food. On Sunday KAI3 chef Jens Meyer from the hotel Budersand has cooked and everyone loved it. Also, the live act, the singer Zsuzsa was received very well and upgraded the event. We are completely satisfied and happy. Now everything is already dismantled again, until this morning 3 a.m. everything was vanished, what previously had built up in a week hardly.”
