In 2013, the Cortina Winter Polo Audi Gold Cup will take place from February 17 to 23 February in Fiames, district of Cortina d’Ampezzo. The frozen surface of Lake Misurina (Auronzo di Cadore), traditional host of the tournament, has not reached a sufficient thickness to allow the tournament.
Polo has been played in Cortina since the early 90s, but it is only since 2001 that the commitment of the two Italians Maurizio Zuliani and Claudio Giorgiutti has seen the Gold Cup achieve its present glory and establish a new era in polo at this unique location. After last year’s successful Ladies’ Premiere, there will also be an additional Polo Ladies’ Cup again in 2013 as part of the Cortina Gold Cup. The Cortina Winter Gold Cup is one of the few high-goal winter tournaments whose results will contribute to the 2012 World Polo Tour rankings. The organisers are already looking forward to some great sport and thrilling chukkas in 2013.
Claudio Giorgiutti, Sporting Director of Cortina Winter Polo says of the 2012 snow polo tournament, “This year we have once again managed to fully meet the high expectations of spectators and players alike. We had some well-known players, including famous professionals from Argentina with high handicaps. A lot of spectators timed their holidays specially to be able to come to see the snow polo in Cortina. That’s very gratifying for us. Times are hard for the world of sport, and polo is no exception, so it’s a good thing that we can call on twenty years of experience and know-how and have an internationally-renowned organising committee to enable us to put on a sporting event at the very highest level.”
On the first day at 1pm (local time) the teams Audi and Ruinart will play against each other, following by a match of team Hotel De La Poste against team John Taylor – Montecarlo.
