In der Welt des Automobils hat der Name des Stammsitzes der heutigen Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, einen ganz besonderen Klang: Zuffenhausen. Für die Porsche AG ist Zuffenhausen viel mehr als nur ein traditionsreicher Produktionsstandort, denn in Zuffen-hausen schlägt das Herz des Unternehmens. Seit über 70 Jahren befindet sich hier der Stammsitz, und seit 1950 wurden in Stuttgart mehr als eine Million Porsche-Sportwagen produziert.
Das Konstruktionsbüro Porsche übersiedelte bereits im Juni 1938 von der Kronenstraße 24 im Zentrum Stuttgarts in ein neu errichtetes Gebäudeensemble im Stadtteil Zuffenhausen. Von Beginn an wurden im Porsche-Stammwerk wichtige Kapitel der Automobilgeschichte geschrieben: Hier entstand 1938 die Nullserie des späteren Volkswagen „Käfer“, 1939 folgte mit dem Typ 64 der Urahn aller späteren Porsche-Sportwagen. Ursprünglich für das Langstreckenrennen Berlin-Rom vorgesehen, gelten die aerodynamischen Stromlinienwagen als Wegweiser aller nachfolgenden Porsche-Modelle.
Nachdem die ersten Porsche 356 ab 1948 im österreichischen Gmünd entstanden waren, kehrte Porsche Ende 1949 wieder in die Autostadt Stuttgart zurück. Da das Porsche-Werk in Zuffenhausen damals noch immer vom amerikanischen Militär besetzt war, mietete Porsche bei der benachbarten Karosseriewerke Reutter & Co. GmbH eine Halle an, in der Anfang 1950 mit den Produktionsvorbereitungen begonnen wurde. Am 6. April 1950 wurde der erste Typ 356 fertig gestellt, bis zum Jahresende sollten es 369 Fahrzeuge werden. Der Erfolg der Sportwagen von Porsche lässt sich nicht nur anhand der Verkaufszahlen ablesen, sondern auch am weiteren Ausbau der Zuffenhausener Produktionsanlagen. 1952 entstand der vom bekannten Architekten Rolf Gutbrod entworfene Gebäudekomplex des Porsche-Werks 2, und 1956 verließ der 10.000 Porsche 356 die Werkshallen, die stetig erweitert und ausgebaut wurden. Im Jahr 1960 folgte das Porsche-Werk 3, in dem unter anderem die Verkaufs- und Kundendienstabteilungen untergebracht waren.
Unmittelbar nach der Einführung des 911 übernahm die damalige Porsche KG im Jahr 1964 auch das Karosseriewerk Reutter mit seinen rund 1.000 Mitarbeitern. Heute werden in Zuffenhausen die 911-Baureihe sowie Fahrzeuge der Boxster-Baureihe und alle Porsche-Motoren produziert. Das Werk unterteilt sich in die Bereiche Karosseriebau, Lackiererei, Fahrzeugmontage, Sattlerei, Motorenmontage und Prüfstände. Um eine flexible Produktion auf engem Raum zu gewährleisten, hat Porsche spezielle Lösungen entwickelt, darunter die mehrstöckige Fertigung im Karosseriebau und der Fahrzeugmontage. Eine weitere Besonderheit: Die Porsche-Serienfahrzeuge werden zusammen mit den Rennversionen auf einem Band produziert. 2011 wird zudem eine neue, besonders umweltfreundliche Lackiererei in Betrieb genommen, die derzeit in direkter Nachbarschaft zu den Werken 1 und 5 entsteht, auf einem ehemaligen Grundstück der Dürr AG, das Porsche im Frühjahr 2008 erworben hat.
Als zusätzliches Bekenntnis zum Standort Zuffenhausen wurde im Januar 2009 das neue Porsche-Museum eröffnet. Am Stammsitz des Unternehmens werden darin auf einer Ausstellungsfläche von 5.600 Quadratmetern rund 80 historische Fahrzeuge und weitere Kleinexponate aus der Unternehmensgeschichte präsentiert. Als das spektakulärste von Porsche in Auftrag gegebene Bauprojekt ist das Porsche-Museum nicht nur in die Firmengeschichte eingegangen, sondern bereichert die Region Stuttgart um einen weiteren kulturellen und architektonischen Höhepunkt.
Das Porsche-Museum würdigt das 60-jährige Standortjubiläum mit einer Sonderaustellung: Vom 20. März bis 9. Mai 2010 werden anhand von Fotos die Anfänge und die Entwicklung der Produktion am Stammsitz Zuffenhausen vorgestellt. Zudem wird einer der ersten in Zuffenhausen gefertigte Porsche 356 Coupé ausgestellt, der nach einem außergewöhnlichen Restaurierungsprojekt erstmalig im Museum gezeigt wird.
60 Years of Porsche in Zuffenhausen
The Porsche Museum is holding a special exhibition to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the factory in Zuffenhausen. From 20 March to 9 May, 2010 the beginning and the development of production will be presented at the company’s headquarters in Zuffenhausen.
In the world of motoring, the name of today’s Dr. Eng. h.c. F. Porsche AG headquarters in Stuttgart has a special ring to it: Zuffenhausen. For Porsche AG, Zuffenhausen is a lot more than just a production site steeped in tradition. Zuffenhausen is the heart of the company. For over 70 years, the company’s headquarters have been located in Zuffenhausen and a million Porsche cars have been produced here since 1950.
As early as June 1938, Porsche’s Design and Construction office was relocated from 24 Kronenstraße in the centre of Stuttgart to a newly constructed facility in the district of Zuffenhausen. From the very beginning, history was made in the Porsche main factory; the pre-production model of the Volkswagen „Käfer“ , for instance, was built here in 1938 closely followed by the Type 64, the forefather of all Porsche sports cars to follow. Developed for the Berlin-Rome long-distance race, the aerodynamic and streamlined Type 64 provided the design cues for all the Porsche models built after it.
After the production of the first Porsche 356 cars in Gmünd, Austria in 1948, Porsche returned to Stuttgart in 1949. However, at the time, the facility housing the Porsche factory today was still occupied by the US Military. Porsche then leased an adjacent hall from the coach building and body construction company, Reutter & Co. GmbH, where preparations for production started at the beginning of 1950. On 6 April, 1950 the first Type 356 was completed and by the end of the same year Porsche had produced 369 of these. The success of Porsche’s sports car is not only evident in the sales figures, but also in the expansion of the production facilities in Zuffenhausen. In 1952 a new complex of buildings, which would house a second plant, Werk 2, was designed by the renowned architect Rolf Gutbrod and in 1956 the 10,000th Porsche 356 rolled off the assembly line of a plant which had been continuously enlarged and upgraded. In 1960 a new plant, Werk 3, was erected to accommodate, among others, the Sales and Customer Service Departments.
Immediately after the introduction of the 911 in 1964, Porsche AG, as the company was called at the time, took over Reuter Karosseriewerk and its staff of approximately 1,000 employees. Today, the 911-series, the Boxter series and all Porsche engines are produced in Zuffenhausen. The plant is subdivided into sections for a Body Shop, a Paint Shop, Vehicle Assembly, Upholstery, Engine Assembly and a Test Rig. To ensure flexibility in production in a confined area, Porsche has developed special solutions that include multi-floor production facilities in the Body Shop and Vehicle Assembly sections. Furthermore, the series models and racing cars are built on a single assembly line. In 2011 an environmentally friendly Paint Shop will be commissioned. The Paint Shop, which will be located in the proximity of Plants 1 and 5, is currently being erected on what used to be the premises of Dürr AG acquired by Porsche in 2008.
In January 2009, the new Porsche Museum, with 5,600 square metres of exhibition space, was opened as a further pledge to Zuffenhausen. Here, at the Company Headquarters, about 80 historical cars and other exhibits are on display. As Porsche’s most spectacular construction project, the Porsche Museum has not only gone down in the company’s history but, as a cultural and architectural highlight, it also serves to further enrich the region of Stuttgart.
In commemoration of Porsche’s 60th Anniversary in Zuffenhausen, the Porsche Museum is holding a special exhibition from 20 March to 9 May 2010. Photographs will be displayed to present the beginning and, the development of production processes in Zuffenhausen. Besides that, one of the first Porsche 356 Coupés built in Zuffenhausen will also be on show for the first time after it underwent an unusual restoration process.
