Der Präsident der englischen Hurlingham Polo Association – des weltgrößten nationalen Verbandes – begrüßte das Buch als wertvollen Beitrag vor allem für Polo-Einsteiger, die englische Übersetzung ist in Vorbereitung.
Mit Fotos von Urs Kuckertz erklären die Autoren Inge Schwenger und Sean Dayus aktuelle Regeln, alle wichtigen Grundlagen, die verschiedenen Schläge und die erfolgreichsten Techniken. Auch die Geschichte und legendäre Wettkämpfe dieses rasanten Sports werden ausführlich beschrieben.
Polo ist die älteste bekannte Art, gemeinsam mit dem Pferd einer spielerischen, sportlichen Beschäftigung nachzugehen und dieser Tatsache gebührt Respekt, der „normale“ Reiter sollte sich mit Offenheit dem Polosport zuwenden. Die Autoren bieten verschiedene Möglichkeiten, sich dem Polosport anzunähren, bleiben dabei kritisch und immer dem Pferd zugewandt.
Über die Autoren:
Inge Schwenger ist seit über zwölf Jahren begeisterte Polospielerin. Ihr Anliegen ist es, den Sport Jugendlichen zu öffnen und Standards zu entwickeln, nach denen Polo einfach erlernbar ist. Sie ist Präsidentin des Berliner Polo Clubs e.V. und Leiterin der clubeigenen Polo-Schule. Sean Dayus langjähriger Manager und Cheftrainer des mitgliederstärksten englischen Poloclubs in Tidworth ist Mitglied der Hurlingham Rules Comission. Die Fotos stammen vom Berliner Werbefotografen Urs Kuckertz, der seit April dieses Jahres selbst Polo spielt.

Begleiten Sie Fußgänger und Reiter bei ihren ersten Polostunden. Setzen Sie sich selbst aufs Pferd und versuchen Sie, den Ball im vollen Galopp zu schlagen. Der Berliner Polo Club lädt Polointeressierte ein, einen Schnuppertag auf dem Schlossgut Schönwalde zu verbringen und von professionellen Trainern die Grundlagen des Polospielens zu lernen. Jenseits des Vorurteils, Polo sei nur ein Sport für Adelige und Millionäre, werden Sie feststellen, dass dieser Sport ein rasantes Vergnügen ist. Nicht umsonst gilt Polo als die schnellste Mannschaftssportart der Welt. Dabei muss man keine eigenen Pferde besitzen oder extrem wohlhabend sein, um Polo zu spielen – wie das Beispiel des Berliner Polo Clubs mit rund 20 clubeigenen Leihpferden zeigt. Es braucht stattdessen Mut und taktisches Verständnis, denn Polo gleicht einer Kombination aus Schach und Eishockey auf dem Rücken eines Pferdes, das mit 50 km/h über den Platz jagt.

A game of lords and lord of the games! A passion for horses, the oldest team sport, lifestyle icons – polo is all that! The president of the Hurlingham Polo Association, the world’s largest national association, has acknowledged the book as a valuable contribution to the sport of polo, especially for beginners. The English edition is in the works.
The authors, Inge Schwenger and Sean Dayus, use photos by Urs Kuckertz to illustrate the current rules of the game, the most important basics, the various hits, and the most effective techniques.
Polo is the oldest known way of engaging in athletic activities with the mutual performance of the horse. This calls for respect and the “normal” rider is best advised to approach the game of polo open-mindedly. Though the authors suggest various ways of getting into the sport of polo, they remain critical and focus mainly on the horse.
About the Authors:
Inge Schwenger has been a passionate polo player for twelve years. She is mainly concerned about making polo more accessible for the youth, and the development of standards that make it easier to learn the game. She is President of the Berliner Polo Club and head of the club’s Polo School.
Sean Dayus is a member of the Hurlingham Rules Commission. For several years now, he has also been Manager and Head Trainer at Tidworth Polo Club, the club with the most members in England.
The photographs are by the Berlin-based advertising photographer Urs Kuckertz, who has also been playing polo since April this year.

The Berliner Polo Club invites all polo enthusiasts to enjoy an open day at the Schlossgut Schönwalde and learn the basics of polo from professional trainers. Away from the prejudice that polo is a game exclusively for royals and millionaires, you will find out that this is indeed an enjoyable and fast-paced game. It is with good reason that polo is acknowledged as the world’s fastest team sport. Besides, one need not own a horse or be a millionaire to play polo (the Berliner Polo Club, for instance, has 20 horses for hire). Instead, polo being quite like a combination of chess and ice hockey on a horse charging across the field at 50 km/h, one needs courage and tactical awareness.
