Elefantenpolo in Thailand

Vom 22. bis 28. März wurde in Thailand ganz großes Polo gespielt: Zwölf Teams traten bei der Elefanten Polomeisterschaft in Chiang Rai im Norden Thailands gegeneinander an. Niffy Winter war mit seinem Team Mercedes-Benz bereits zum sechsten Mal dabei und berichtet exklusiv vom King’s Cup 2010.
„Mittlerweile zum 6. Mal war ich mit der deutschen Mannschaft (Oliver Winter, Niffy Winter, Hugo Goetz und Dirk Goetz) auf der Elefanten Polomeisterschaft in Thailand. Dieses Jahr konnten wir nur den dritten Platz belegen, da die thailändische Mannschaft im Viertelfinale überlegen war. Der Profispieler Khun Nat Patummalee brachte seine thailändische Mannschaft „King Power“ durch den gezielten Schuss von der Mittellinie mit einem abgebrochenen Schläger in Führung. Die Faszination über diesen Schlag überrollte unsere Mannschaft und verlor daraufhin mit 3 Toren Abstand. Nicht nur die Elefanten, die durch die Werbeeinnahmen dieses Turniers in ihren „Camps“ über das gesamte Jahr hinaus finanziert werden können, sondern auch die teilnehmenden Spieler und Gäste sind die Gewinner dieses Events. Mit zwölf teilnehmenden Teams aus allen Teilen der Welt – Nepal, Bombay, Singapur, Sri Lanka, Australien, England, Schweden, Deutschland, Argentinien, USA… – war das Turnier ein großer Erfolg. Wegen der Hitze wird früh morgens und spät nachmittags gespielt. Abend findet regelmäßig Cocktailempfängen Galadinner und Wohltätigkeitsveranstaltungen statt.“

Twelve teams took part in the Elephant-Polo Championships that took place from 22 – 28 March in Chiang Rai in the north of Thailand. Niffy Winter, taking part in his sixth Elephant-Polo Championship with his team Mercedes-Benz, reported exclusively from the King’s Cup 2010.
“This was my sixth appearance at the Elephant-Polo Championship in Thailand with the German team (Oliver Winter, Niffy Winter, Hugo Goetz und Dirk Goetz). This year we only made it to third place because the Thai team was the stronger team in the quarter finals. Thailand’s professional player, Khun Nat Patummalee put his team, King Power, in the lead with a well-aimed hit from the midfield. This sensational hit intimidated our team and we eventually lost by a 3-goal margin. However, all the participants at this event are winners, the players, the guests, and the elephants whose upkeep in the “Camps” is financed all year round by income from this event. With participants from all around the word – Nepal, Bombay, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Australia, England, Sweden, Germany, Argentina, USA – the tournament was a great success. Because of the heat, matches are played early in the morning and late in the afternoon. In the evenings there are usually cocktail receptions, dinners, and charity events.”
