FIP Präsident James W. Ashton stirbt bei Polounfall in Thailand

Mit großer Trauer reagiert die weltweite Pologemeinschaft auf die Nachricht vom Tod des FIP Interim Präsidenten James W. Ashton. Der 69-jährige Australier erlag seinen schweren Verletzungen am Wochenende in einem Krankenhaus in Pattaya. Sein Pferd war während eines Chuckers bei der Adamas Trophy im Escape Polo Club (www.poloescape.com) bei vollem Tempo gestürzt. Wie Augenzeugen berichten, passierte der tragische Unfall beim Abreiten. Ashton war anscheinend nicht auf gleicher Höhe seines Abreitgegners. Dadurch gerieten die Vorderbeinen seines Pferdes in die Hinterbeine des anderen Pferdes, woraufhin Ashton schwer stürzte. Das 10-Goal Charity-Turnier des thailändisches Polo Escape Resorts zugunsten wohltätiger Zwecke des lokalen Rotary Clubs (www.rotary.org) war eine von verschiedenen Stationen, die Ashton auf seiner Südostasien Rundreise besucht hatte. Zuvor hatte er Singapur und Malaysia, die ebenfalls zur FIP-Zone „D“ (Asien) gehören, einen Besuch abgestattet.
Ashton war einer der verdienstvollsten Offiziellen im Weltpoloverband. Als einziger Spieler hat er an zwei FIP Weltmeisterschaften für Australien teilgenommen. Am 23. November 2009 übernahm er auf der FIP-Hauptversammlung in Buenos Aires die Interimspräsidentschaft des Polo-Weltverbandes, nachdem Patrick Guerrand-Hermès auf Drängen der drei großen Polonationen Argentinien, USA und England von seinem Amt zurückgetreten war. Wie ein FIP-Delegierter mitteilte, ist derzeit völlig offen, wie es im Weltverband nach dem dramatischen Unfalltod Ashtons weitergehen wird.
Letzte Woche war der Australier, der im Oktober 2009 ein malaiisches Polo Team auf seine Millamolong Station (www.millamolong.com) eingeladen hatte, zu seiner Reise durch die südostasiatischen Länder aufgebrochen. Er habe sich einen persönlichen Eindruck von der Entwicklung des Polosports in Südostasien verschaffen wollen. Nach einem Wochenende in Singapur und einer Pressekonferenz in Malaysia mit HRH Prinz Abdullah, wo die Qualifikationen für die WM stattfinden werden, war Ashton am Donnerstag nach Thailand gekommen, um eine Annäherung der drei Polofamilien Thailands zu unterstützen. Asad Jumabhoy, FIP-Ambassador für Singapur: „Ich hatte das Privileg, mit James Ashton einen wundervollen Menschen kennen zu dürfen. Noch vergangene Woche habe ich in Singapur und Malaysia viel Zeit mit ihm verbringen dürfen, und wir haben uns erst am Mittwoch nach einem gemeinsamen Dinner bei seiner Königlichen Hoheit, dem Kronprinzen von Pahang in Kuala Lumpur, voneinander verabschiedet – ich hätte nie geglaubt, dass dies unsere letzte Begegnung gewesen sein sollte.“

The death of James W Ashton, Interim President of FIP, has been greeted with dismay around the polo world. The 69-year old Australian was playing at the Adamas Trophy in Escape Polo Club (www.poloescape.com) when his horse stumbled and fell at full speed. Ashton suffered fatal injuries and passed away over the weekend at a hospital in Pattaya. According to eyewitnesses, the accident happened during a ride off when Ashton’s pony collided with the rear limbs of the opponent’s pony. The 10-goal charity tournament hosted by the Polo Escape Resort to the benefit of the local Rotary Club ( www.rotary.org) was one of the many stops Ashton had made on his Sotheast Asia tour. He had already visited Singapore and Malaysia which are also part of the FIP-Zone D.
Ashton was one of the most highly regarded officials at the FIP. Playing on the Australian team, he was the only player to have taken part in two FIP World Cup tournaments. He took over as FIP Interim President on 23 November, 2009 after Patrick Guerrand-Hermés was pressured by Argentina, USA, and England into stepping down. According to a FIP-delegate, it was still uncertain who would lead the federation after Ashton’s tragic death.
The Australian set off on his tour of Southeast Asia last week. He had previously hosted a Malaysian team on his Millamolong Station (www.millamolong.com) in October and now wanted to make a personal evaluation of developments on the polo scene in Southeast Asia. After spending a weekend in Singapore and taking part in a press conference in Malaysia (venue of the World Cup qualifiers) with HRH Prince Abdullah, Ashton arrived in Thailand on Thursday to facilitate a co-operation between Thailand’s three polo families. Asad Jumabhoy, FIP-Ambassador from Singapore: “In James Ashton I was privileged to make the acquaintance of a great person. Only last week I spent lots of time with in Singapore and Malaysia and we only parted on Wednesday after dinner with HRH the prince of Pahang in Kuala Lumpur. I never would have thought this would be our last meeting.”
