Südafrika gehört mit seinen 2.000 Kilometer langen Küsten und seiner atemberaubenden Tier- und Pflanzenwelt nicht nur zu den beliebtesten Reisezielen, sondern macht mehr auch als Polodestination einen Namen. Das Polo+10 Team hat die wichtigsten südafrikanischen Polo Destinationen besucht.
Die Ursprünge des südafrikanischen Polosports liegen rund um die Stadt Plettenberg Bay – etwa 600 Kilometer östlich von Kapstadt. In dieser Gegend fand 1874 das erste dokumentierte Polo Match statt. Heute zählt die 1906 gegründete South African Polo Association (SAPA) rund 500 Spieler und knapp 40 Polo Clubs. Zu den besten südafrikanischen Polo Spielern gehören Ignus du Plessis (Hdc +7), Tom de Bruin (Hdc +6), Jean du Plessis (Hdc +6) und Buster MacKenzie (Hdc +6). Gespielt wird in den fünf Provinzen Cape, Highveld, East Griqualand, KwaZulu-Natal und Free State.
Zu den wichtigsten Adressen des Polosports in Südafrika gehört der Kurland Polo Club vor den Toren der Stadt Plettenberg Bay. Der 700 Hektar große Polo-Komplex beherbergt drei fullsize Spielfelder, zwei Stick & Ball Plätze und eine 50 x 100 Meter große Arena. Jährlich ziehen der Club und seine Turniere internationale Spitzenspieler und Besucher aus aller Welt an. Ein noch recht junger Polo Club in der Region ist der Val de Vie Polo Club, gut 40 Fahrminuten von Kapstadt entfernt.
Beliebte Polo Clubs der Provinz Free State sind der Oaklands Polo Club und der Harrismith Polo Club. Beide verfügen über eine Poloschule, Polofelder und eine Polo-Arena.
In den vergangenen Jahren hat sich der Polo Tourismus in Südafrika immer weiter etabliert. Zahlreiche Polo Schools bieten ihre Dienste und Coaches an. Unter ihnen auch die Franshoek Polo School in den Bergen von Witteberg, die seit über zehn Jahren Anfänger und Fortgeschrittene im Polosattel ausbildet. Beste Voraussetzungen, um das eigene Spiel zu verfeinern und in landschaftlich schöner Atmosphäre Polo zu spielen, bietet auch die Uitgedacht Farm „Poloafrica“ am Fuße der Maluti Berge. Zwei Full-size Spielfelder sowie eine Polo-Arena und ein Stick & Ball Platz stehen dort zur Verfügung.
In der Provinz East Griqualand bietet der Jurassic Park Polo maßgeschneiderte Polotrainings in allen Spielklassen. Der Crocodile Creek Polo Club in der Provinz Highveld gehört zu den am schnellsten wachsenden Polo Clubs Südafrikas. Er veranstaltet Polo Clinics, Club Chukkers und Turniere. Seit 2007 gibt es die Gunsmoke Polo Ranch, rund 45 Fahrminuten von der südafrikanischen Hauptstadt Pretoria entfernt. Der Lians River Club in der Provinz KwaZulu-Natal bietet neben dem klassischen Polo Sport auch Polocrosse – eine Kombination aus Polo und Lacrosse, das auf dem Pferd gespielt wird. Wenngleich Wintersportarten im Südafrika kaum verbreitet sind, haben Polofreunde in der Noodsberg Polo School die Gelegenheit, mit Polo Ski Touren auch die südafrikanischen Bergwelt hautnah zu erleben.
Zu den Highlights im Polokalender Südafrikas gehört die BMW International Polo Series, die gewöhnlich an zwei Sonntagen – 19. August 2012 im Durban Shongweni Club und 26. August 2012 im Waterfall Polo Park – stattfindet. Mit Spannung erwartete Begegnung: dieses Jahr wird das südafrikanische Team gegen die indische Nationalmannschaft antreten. Beim South Inter-Provincial Polo Turnier vom 27. bis 29. Juli 2012 – also mitten im südafrikanischen Winter – treffen Teams aus allen fünf Provinzen in der Spielklasse +6 bis +18 im Bergville Polo Club zusammen, um die Prince of Wales Trophy auszuspielen.
Auch um die South Africa Provincial Championships spielen vom 20. April bis 24. Juni 2012 Teams aus den fünf Provinzen. Austragungsorte sind der Kurland Polo Club, der Harrismith Polo Club, der Swartberg Polo Club und der Richmond Polo Club. Kurz darauf stehen vom 13. bis 15. Juli 2012 die Südafrikanischen Polo Meisterschaften um den Beresford Cup auf dem Terminkalender. Aber damit nicht genug: Auch Ladies Polo ist angesagt und hat in Südafrika Fuß gefasst. In jedem Jahr liefern sich die Damen einen sportlichen Schlagabtausch beim Ladies Polo International Turnier (Spielklasse +2 bis +3) am 22. Oktober 2012.
Doch keineswegs nur Touristen, auch immer mehr Südafrikaner entdecken den Polosport für sich, wie die jüngsten Entwicklungen zeigen. Neue Polo Clubs entstehen, Turniere werden ins Leben gerufen und das Interesse an Polo Academies steigt. Polo+10 ist dabei und möchte das spannende Pololand Südafrika auf seinem Weg zur internationalen Polodestination tatkräftig unterstützen.

South Africa, with its 2.000 kilometer-long coast and uniquely breathtaking animal and plant life, isn’t only a favored holiday destination, but its also a polo destination with a name. The Polo+10 Team visited the most important South African polo destinations.
The origins of South African polo can be found in the city of Plettenberg Bay, which is located about 600 kilometers east of Cape Town. The first documented polo match in South Africa was played in Plettenberg Bay in 1874. Today 500 players and about 40 polo clubs belong to the South African Polo Association (SAPA), which was founded in 1906. The Kurland Polo Club near the city of Plettenberg Bay is one of the most important addresses in South African polo. In recent years polo tourism has established itself. Numerous polo schools offer their service and coaches. For more than ten years, Franshoek Polo School in the mountains of Witteberg has been has been training beginner and advanced players in the polo saddle. The Uitgedach Farm “Poloafrica” at the foot of the Maluti Mountians promises the best conditions to improve your game and play polo in beautiful natural surroundings. Two full-sized playing fields as well as a polo arena, and stick & ball areas are included in the facilities.
In the province of East Griqualand, Jurassic Park Polo offers customized programs in every playing class. The Crocodile Creek Polo Club, in the province Highveld, is among one of the fastest growing polo clubs in South Africa. It hosts polo clinics, club chukkas, and tournaments. The Gunsmoke Polo Ranch was founded in 2007 and is located 45 minutes from the South African capital Pretoria. The Lians River Club in the province of KwaZulu-Natal offers not only classic Polo, but also Polocross – a combination of polo and lacrosse, which is played on horseback. Even though winter sports are rare in South Africa, the Noodsberg Polo School polo fans are given the opportunity to experience the South African mountain range up close on a polo ski tour.
The BMW international Polo Series is one of the absolute highlights of the polo calendar in South Africa. It takes place on two Sundays – on the 19th of August 2012 at the Durban Shongweni Club and on the 26th of August 2012 at the Waterfall Polo Park. This year, in an eagerly awaited suspenseful match, the South African teams will face-off against the Indian national team. The South Inter-provincial Polo Tournament (27-29 of July 2012) will be held in the middle of the South African winter. Teams from all five provinces in playing classes ranging from +6 to +18 will play at the Bergville Polo Club for the Prince of Wales Trophy.
Additionally, the South African Provincial Championships will be played from the 20th of April to the 24th of June 2012, with teams from five provinces: locations will include the Kurland Polo Club, the Harrismith Polo Club, the Swartberg Polo Club and the Richmond Polo Club. Only a few weeks later the South African Polo Championships take place from the 13-15 July for the Beresford Cup. Last but not least: ladies polo is also happening in South Africa. Every year women from the take part in competition at the Ladies Polo Tournament (playing classes +2 and +3) on the 22nd of October 2012.
Not just tourists, but also South Africans are discovering Polo, as new developments show. New polo clubs are being founded and tournaments are being organized, interest in polo academies is growing. Polo+10 is there, supporting the exciting polo land of South Africa as it makes its way to a world-renowned international Polo destination.
