Das hat die Federation of International Polo (FIP, www.fippolo.com) am 19. April 2010 auf ihrer Hauptversammlung in Florida beschlossen. Damit ist Argentinien bereits zum zweiten Mal – nach der ersten WM im Jahr 1987 – Ausrichter der Polo Weltmeisterschaft. Die Kämpfe um die beste Polonation der Welt werden im September 2011 im großen Polostadion in Palermo / Buenos Aires ausgefochten. Die Vorrundenspiele finden im Estancia Grande Polo Club in der Provinz San Luis statt. Dort stehen vier Polofelder und Stallungen für 300 Poloponies zur Verfügung. Ausreichend Platz für die zehn Teams (inklusive dem Gastgeberland Argentinien und dem Titelverteidiger Chile), die sich in den Play-Offs im kommenden Jahr für den World Cup qualifizieren können. In der Region Südamerika finden die Qualifikationsspiele in Brasilien statt, die Länder aus der Region Afrika/Asien/Ozeanien kämpfen in Malaysia um die Teilname an der WM. Die Austragungsorte für die Regionen Europa und Nordamerika werden noch bekannt gegeben.
Auf der Hauptversammlung wurde weiterhin Eduardo J. Huergo, der nach dem Tod von James W. Ashton die Präsidentschaft der FIP auf Zeit übernommen hatte, in seinem Amt bestätigt. Damit wird der Argentinier bis November 2012 den Weltpoloverband leiten. Huergo: „Die Atmosphäre zwischen den Mitgliedsländern der FIP – egal ob groß oder klein – war auf der Versammlung von Brüderlichkeit und Einheitlichkeit gekennzeichnet. Die Wahl zum Präsidenten ehrt mich sehr. Mit der Unterstützung von unserem neuen Executive Committee and Council of Administration werden wir die Arbeit an der Neustrukturierung und Ausweitung der Aktivitäten der FIP zum Nutzen unseres großartigen Sports weltweit fortsetzen.“
Außerdem konnte die FIP auf der Hauptversammlung zwei neue Mitglieder begrüßen: Der Weltpoloverband hat die nationalen Polo Verbände von Nigeria (www.npapolo.com) und Portugal aufgenommen und zählt damit derzeit 51 Mitgliedsländer.
Polo World Cup 2011
For the second time in the history of the Polo World Cup Argentina has won the bid to host the most important chukkas worldwide.
The Federation of International Polo (FIP www.fippolo.com) made the announcement on 19 April during a Special General Assembly in Florida. This makes it the second time – after the first Polo World Cup in 1987 – that Argentina has won the bid to host the most important chukkas. The games will be held in September 2011 in the large polo stadium in Palerrmo / Buenos Aires, where teams will vie for the title of the world’s best polo nation. The preliminary matches will be played in the Estancia Grande Polo Club in San Luis province. The club will provide four polo grounds plus stabling for a pool of some 300 ponies. Space enough for the ten teams (including the host Argentina and defending champions Chile) which will qualify for the World Cup after play-offs during 2011. Qualifying tournaments for South American countries will be played in Brazil while those for Africa/Asia/Oceania will be played in Malaysia. Venues for Europe and North America are yet to be announced.
At the General Assembly, delegates confirmed Eduardo J. Huergo as president of the federation. Huergo, who had been serving as interim president after the death of James W. Ashton, will now head the federation until November 2011. Huergo: “This Assembly was held in an atmosphere of fraternity and unity amongst all our member countries, small and large. I am honoured to have been elected president and, with the support of our new Executive Committee and Council of Administration, will continue to work diligently on the restructuring and expansion of the federation’s activities to the benefit of our great sport worldwide.”
The assembly also welcomed two new members, Nigeria (www.npapolo.com) and Portugal, bringing the FIP’s membership to 51 countries.
