Der Royal Selangor Polo Club ist der älteste Polo Club in Malaysia und zählt heute rund 60 aktive Mitglieder. Gegründet wurde der Polo Club 1902 unter dem Namen Selangor Polo Club in Port Swettenham (heutiger Name: Port Klang www.pka.gov.my), dem bedeutendsten und größten Seehafen Malaysias. Dort blieb er aber nicht lange, sondern zog bereits 1911 in Malaysias Hauptstadt Kuala Lumpur um, wo er vorübergehend auf dem Gelände der British Military Administration untergebracht war. Kurz darauf fand er im Selangor Turf Club an der Ampang Road (www.selangorturfclub.com) für mehrere Jahre ein Zuhause mitten im Pferderennsportzentrum. Zu einem eigenen Gelände kam der Club erst in den 1960er Jahren, als Malaysias erster Premierminister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, dem Polo Club im Gebiet Ampang Hilir circa 10 Hektar staatliches Land zur Verfügung stellte. Dort wurde 1965 das Clubhaus gebaut, welches heute noch steht. Dem steigenden Interesse an Pferde- und Amateurrennen Rechnung tragend, wurde der Club im gleichen Jahr in Selangor Polo & Riding Club umbenannt. Seinen heutigen Namen verdankt der Royal Selangor Polo Club HRH Sultan Sharaffudin Idris Shah of Selango, der den Polo Club in Kuala Lumpur mit seinem Patronat in einen königlichen Status erhob.

Malaysia’s oldest polo club has an eventful history and is presently under the patronage of HRH Sultan Sharaffudin Idris Shah of Selango.

At the end of the 19th century the British brought polo to the Malaysian peninsula where the game of kings has been enjoying something f a renaissance since the turn of the new century. There are four clubs in Kuala Lumpur alone, the oldest of which is the Royal Selangor Polo Club.
The Royal Selangor Polo Club is the oldest polo club in Malaysia and presently has about 60 active members. Selangor Polo Club, which is now called the Royal Selangor Polo Club, was formed in 1902 in Malaysia’s most important and biggest port, Port Swettenham (present day Port Klang: www.pka.gov.my). However, the club did not stay there long; as early as 1911 it moved to the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur where it was temporarily housed on the premises of the British Military Administration. Shortly thereafter, the club moved to the Selangor Turf Club in Ampang Road (www.selangorturfclub.com) and stayed here at the heart of the equestrian sports centre for many years. The club finally acquired its own property in the 60’s when Malaysia’s first prime minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman availed about 10 hectares of state-owned land in the Ampang Hilir region. The clubhouse was constructed here in 1965. In the same year, the club was renamed the Selangor Polo and Riding Club due to the mounting interest horseracing. The present name, Royal Selangor Polo Club, is thanks to HRH Sultan Sharaffudin Idris Shah of Selango who hoisted the club to royal status through his patronage.
