In 2014, the premium magazine POLO+10, which has long since become one of the world’s leading polo platforms, celebrated its tenth anniversary: A decade of rousing match reports, interviews or inspiring background reports. To mark the anniversary in 2014, we have obtained exciting statements from more than 20 influential personalities, players and movers and shakers from the international polo world – including Mauricio Fernandez Funez, Director Argentine Polo Association or Reto Gaudenzi, World Polo and Honorary President Polo Club St. Moritz. \u00bfC\u00f3mo se ha desarrollado el polo en los \u00faltimos 10 a\u00f1os desde su punto de vista?<\/strong> In a very pleasant coincidence with POLO+10, the last ten years of my life have been closely linked to the sport of polo<\/a>, the first three as a member of the Board of Directors of the Argentine Polo Association and the last seven as its Executive Director. This fortunate circumstance has given me the opportunity to watch our sport develop from a unique place: from the governing body of polo in Argentina and the sport\u2019s main reference in the world. From this perspective, I would like to share some opinions and considerations on its development over these past ten years. Undoubtedly, the most relevant fact seems to be the extraordinary growth of polo, both at home and abroad. In Argentina, we have witnessed an increase in the number of polo clubs and players, particularly on both ends of the official record: children between the ages of six and nine, on one hand, and high handicap players, on the other. The quality of the players remains unchanged and the game the Argentines play continues to motivate polo players from all around the world. Furthermore, the world has become a sort of \u201cinternational circuit\u201d. Beginning with the U.S. season, it then crosses the Atlantic Ocean to continue in England and continental Europe, while at the same time being simultaneously scattered around the world from the Caribbean to Asia Pacific. Finally, the circuit concludes in Argentina with our spring season, which includes high handicap tournaments and the Triple Crown championship \u2013Tortugas Country Club Open, Hurlingham Club Open and the Argentine Polo Open\u2013, all of world renown and fame. In the U.S. as well as in Europe and Asia, we can see the relevance of the large group of Argentine players who play abroad with patrons in low, medium and high handicap tournaments. Argentines are a major engine that drives the sport, substantially improving local possibilities and handicaps while making the game more attractive for a public both increasingly interested and demanding. Speaking of Argentina \u2013the \u201eMecca\u201c of polo\u2013, I find it necessary to point out a certainly contradictory situation of recent years: the increasingly extraordinary individual skill of some players ended up harming the team play. The traditional play based in the idea of straight lines by the shortest route to the opposing goal and clear defensive \u201cback handers\u201d was replaced by an abusive control of the ball, which, although very impressive, finished plotting against the brilliance of the game and increasing the risks of a sport already risky. Aware of this situation, the Argentine Polo Association decided to work quickly and firmly, changing a couple of rules of play and making \u201crecommendations\u201d to referees and players for the strict compliance of another seven rules that were permanently infringed, which somehow contributed to this damaging situation. Nowadays, polo in Argentina is back on its historic footprints, maintaining a universal recognition the entire country can be proud of. At the same time, countless fans around the world practice the game or enjoy it from the stands.<\/p>\n

In today\u2019s world of elite athletes and fierce competition, it is practically impossible to see sportsmen reaching \u201estate of the art\u201c performances from a remarkable amateur condition. Such is the case of the players competing in the Argentine Polo Open, the most sublime artistic expression of men and horses in the game of polo.<\/p>\n

It is a way of life for many people within the game. Over the last 10 years the essence of it has not changed but as the sport evolves i think it has become more professional at the top end which has started to filter through the levels. There are now more trainers and coaches. The infrastructure has also improved to a high standard with a lot of focus on the fields. The standard of horses has always been getting better with amazing breeding programs and operations. I hope all this continues to improve and that we as a sport can keep getting new blood, players and fans into the sport.<\/p>\n

The other one was holding arena polo at the O2 in london. To see the sport in an iconic venue such as that is a great achievement and long may it continue.<\/p>\n

Polo ponies are much better due to selection, embryo transfer and the effort of breeders and Breeders\u2019 Associations. Clones are a reality and in the future we will see how they perform. Players have become more professional, with more important tournaments played around the world. The number of players is increasing and also the countries in which polo is growing steadily. The main Polo Associations, Asociaci\u00f3n Argentina de Polo, Hurlingham Polo Asssociation and United States Polo Association are the leaders. Federation of International Polo ( FIP ) is promoting polo around the world.<\/p>\n

\u00bfCu\u00e1les fueron los hitos y experiencias m\u00e1s importantes a nivel personal con respecto al deporte en este periodo?<\/strong> With my brother Adrian we have played in many countries, and now is the turn of our boys, Rauli, Lala and Adrian Jr..All our effort is placed in Lobos where we have our organization and Clubs, La Alegr\u00eda Lobos and Araucaria Polo Club. Lobos is an area than has developed constantly and has boomed in the last years with new Clubs such as El Remanso and Santa Mar\u00eda de Lobos. We also have La Espada\u00f1a in the area, 6 times winner of the Argentine Open. This month we have experienced polo in Azerbaijan \u201eBack to the roots\u201c a sportive and cultural event, where modern polo met Chovgan Polo.<\/p>\n

Nobody came even near to his skills with the ball and his speed in the games. Meanwhile there are 4 players who can really cope with him and have comparable skills. For that reason it seems that the speed in the high goal has accelerated significantly. Nationally it seems that the level of Polo plaid in 4 or 6 goal tournaments in 2013 was even higher than the level of Polo plaid in 8 or 10 goal tournaments in 2003. Fortunately Polo seems to attract a high number of young people \u2013 at least in Germany. In 2003 I knew nearly all German players. Meanwhile there are so many new players that it is impossible to know them. Also the level of amateur players has improved significantly. This year a German team consisting of 3 young German amateur players and one Argentine professional managed to win the subsidiary final of the Austrian Open, a 12 goal tournament, and in the Knize Cup, a 9 goal tournament, the Knize team consisting of 3 amateur players and one Argentine professional managed to reach the final. All this would not have been possible 2003.<\/p>\n

Due to cross breeding the quality of the horses\u2019 velocity and size has increased. The days of the little Criollo are gone. The game is faster and more spectacular, most likely due to the quality of the horses and the players\u2019 increased physical preparation, who are now considered as high-level athletes. Numerous clubs have been created and most notably in France, Chantilly has improved access to this sport. The media has specialized magazines and Internet access to improve communication via the different clubs worldwide.<\/p>\n

Whilst continuing the St Tropez tournament for its 26th year, Meg\u00e8ve for its 19th year, the stages in Val d\u2019Is\u00e8re and Courchevel enrich this winter tour. The arrival of BMW branding will strengthen the event. My sons Matthieu and Cl\u00e9ment Delfosse, are professionals and participate as often as possible to represent France in the international meets, they both have handicap 4 ranking.<\/p>\n

\u00bfC\u00f3mo se ha desarrollado el polo en los \u00faltimos 10 a\u00f1os desde su punto de vista?<\/strong> I came into polo 12 years ago. Especially during the last 10 years I have seen a huge change within polo. When I first wanted to play polo I googled a polo club and Cowdray Park Polo Club came up, so I gave them a call to see how I could book a lesson to learn to play polo. The lady who answered the phone was very posh and fairly snobby and not at all helpful to me when I asked about polo lessons, it was almost as if polo was \u2018a closed sport\u2019, normal people couldn\u2019t just ring up and ask to learn to play. I seemed like I was bothering her and wasting her time but eventually she gave me a mobile number of someone who \u2018might\u2019 be able to give me lessons. How un-commercial was that attitude ? I mean it almost put me off wanting to learn polo altogether, I did think \u2018is this really a world I want to enter into?\u2019. After all your first impression of any company is the person who answers the phone and deals with you and her manner was far from pleasant or friendly. I never did take a lesson at Cowdray Park Polo Club, instead I was introduced a year or so later by Jack Kidd who\u2019s sister was a friend of mine. Through Jack I had my first lessons and I progressed onto The Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club near Windsor, this was a club which welcomed new players and I moved through the levels until I became a full playing member with 6 of my own horses (bad luck Cowdray Park!).<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n

The main changes I have seen in the 10 years has been the huge growth in the number of clubs and players. Since I started the UK has doubled its number of registered players with lots of low-goal clubs springing up everywhere. Another thing I have seen in the past 10 years is the commercialisation of polo. Whereas my first experience showed a very closed world, polo is now very open to new players, beginners and team building days, and indeed the sport has to in order to survive, it is impossible to think that only high goal polo exists because the truth is that 90% of all polo played in the world is played at 2 goal handicap and below. Therefore, it has been nice to see polo develop and welcome new people. It is for sure the only equestrian sport where a 40 something year old person with no riding or polo experience can set themselves a target of playing competitively within a year, imagine showing up at a showjumping yard with that goal, it would be impossible. Also, in the last 10 years it has been interesting to see polo develop as a platform for sponsorship with many brands jumping on the bandwagon due to the way in which polo can really breathe life into brands and businesses. Unlike so many other sports, polo is still relatively young in the sports marketing sector and there is still a huge amount of room for businesses to use it to grow on so many levels, interactive, activation, corporate sponsorship, team sponsorship. Take for example the growth of commercial \u2018polo events\u2019 such as London\u2019s Polo in the Park, and Australia\u2019s Polo in the City events. These are proving hugely popular and are defining a new way in which polo reaches fresh audiences.<\/p>\n

\u00bfCu\u00e1les fueron los hitos y experiencias m\u00e1s importantes a nivel personal con respecto al deporte en este periodo?<\/strong> Polo has taken me around the world, with a purpose, and it is very interesting and fantastic the way in which the international polo community is so open to each other and for me it has been proven more than true that as Winston Churchill said \u2018Polo is a handicap to the world\u2019. I have played polo in Ghana, Argentina, Switzerland, Denmark, Thailand, Spain and Iran. Playing polo in Iran was a very special experience and a milestone; Iran or Persia as it was known is the birthplace of polo and so to go there was one of the most significant parts of my life. We played an International Ladies Tournament against Iran and Australia and we played as England and won whilst playing in front of hundreds of dignitaries and VIPs at the beautiful Kanoon Chooga Polo Club. We were also taken to visit Isfahan where the oldest known polo field is, it is over 1,000 years old and its marble goal posts still stand. Polo caused this experience to happen as without polo it would not have been possible to enter Iran as visitors visa\u2019s are few and far between.<\/p>\n

From my personal point of view the following where the most important. First in the breeding and training of the horses. Knowledge and facilities had increased and the \u201ereward\u201c is seen in the horse. In this times we can see real polo horses in almost every polo spot in the world and players, patrons and breeders try to breed improve and invest in a better \u201eproduct\u201c. The game of polo had also improved. The introduction of new rules in the last 10 years made polo a better game and the perfect examples are the High Goal Tournaments played in Argentina, UK, Sotogrande and USA. Finally, the media and communication in and around polo have had a great development. Thanks to the media we know about polo in every part of the world where a \u201ebocha\u201c is rolling in a polo field with the great importance that communication also \u201eplays\u201c in the game.<\/p>\n

\u00bfCu\u00e1les fueron los hitos y experiencias m\u00e1s importantes a nivel personal con respecto al deporte en este periodo?<\/strong> Having the chance of knowing the best polo players in the world, from past and present history, watch them play and also making interviews to them, is one of the greatest experiences I had thanks to my job. Also traveling to many parts of the world that without polo I would never visit. And last, but not least, being direct witness of the first \u201eAbierto Argentino\u201c won by an uruguayan polo player, David \u201ePel\u00f3n\u201c Stirling. For a tiny country like Uruguay, David\u00b4s title with La Dolfina in 2011 was the most important milestones in polo history for my country.<\/p>\n

In Dubai, where I live, you can now buy villas that back on to 2 exquisite polo fields that 10 years ago were desert. We have also been at the frontier of polo in China where similarly many polo clubs have popped up. More and more people are therefore coming to polo (and getting hooked!). Of our international partners, a significant number have only come to polo in the last 10 years. I think that polo has therefore to some extent rediscovered its roots in the last 10 years. In the nineteenth century, polo was spread by British Cavalry Officers first from India to Great Britain and then to the four corners of the Empire. Polo was played competitvely and to a high standard, but it was \u201eamateur\u201c. When these clubs were established, they continued playing, but developed the game, naturally, within their own countries and within their clubs. At the same time, the professionalisation of the sport developed in the 20th century (as it did with all sports). I think that with the ease of travel in the 21st century, and the new clubs springing up in Asia, the Middle East, and further afield, there has been a chance to revive the spirit of the game. Sir Winston Churchill famously said that \u201ea polo handicap is a passport to the world\u201c and I think in the last 10 years that is once again true, with opportunities for players at all levels to play internationally in stunning settings, not just the main \u201einternationals\u201c. We at British Polo Day have tried to make it easier by hosting 10 events in 10 different countries a year. This is not just for British players, for example, Prince Carl Oettingen-Wallerstein is our host for British Polo Day Germany, but he has also played at British Polo Day Thailand as well as other locations such as India and Dubai. Many of the world\u2018s networks are today \u201evirtual\u201c \u2013 but through polo, there is a very real network of high-achieving, international habit-forming elites that share the language and passion of polo, that cuts through international boundaries, and is spreading the game in the same spirit that it originally spread.<\/p>\n

\u00bfCu\u00e1les fueron los hitos y experiencias m\u00e1s importantes a nivel personal con respecto al deporte en este periodo?<\/strong> \u201e10 years ago I graduated from University in 2003. University was a great time for me, as I met my future wife and I also met Ed Olver, my Co-Founder in British Polo Day. We went our separate ways in the world for 5 years, Ed into the Army, and me as a lawyer in the UAE, but our paths crossed again in 2008, and through our shared experiences, we created the first British Polo Day in 2009. From there it\u2018s been a thrilling ride as we have grown British Polo Day globally. I think in 2003 I would never have guessed that we would be playing polo in the shadow of the Great Wall of China and a Maharaja\u2018s Palace in India, in a Sheikh\u2018s private polo ground and landing helicopters on fields in St Tropez and Moscow. I look forward to the next 10 years!\u201c<\/p>\n

Nina Clarkin, polo player (+4), best female polo player of the world<\/h3>\n

\u00bfC\u00f3mo se ha desarrollado el polo en los \u00faltimos 10 a\u00f1os desde su punto de vista?<\/strong> I think polo has developed a lot in the last ten years. The game is more technical, faster and increasingly a lot more professional at the higher end of the sport. The horses are also constantly improving and with such increased interest in breeding and the development of embryo transfer they will continue to do so. This has had a huge effect on the game and will continue to contribute greatly to the way it progresses in the future.<\/p>\n

\u00bfCu\u00e1les fueron los hitos y experiencias m\u00e1s importantes a nivel personal con respecto al deporte en este periodo?<\/strong> For me winning the Gold Cup in 2003 was the most amazing moment and will always stick in my mind as a very special day. Winning 2 national 8 goal tournaments with an all female team was also a huge highlight. Not just because we made history by being the first all female team to not only compete in the tournament but to win it; but because I got to play with my sister and two of my greatest friends. Representing England abroad is always a huge honour and I look back on all my games played for England with enormous pride.<\/p>\n

\u00bfC\u00f3mo se ha desarrollado el polo en los \u00faltimos 10 a\u00f1os desde su punto de vista?<\/strong> En France, gr\u00e2ce surtout au polo de Chantilly, le polo a connu un essor incroyable voyant le nombre de licenci\u00e9s passer de 300 \u00e0 plus de 1000 au sein de la F\u00e9d\u00e9ration fran\u00e7aise de polo, sans compter le d\u00e9veloppement du paddock-polo au sein de la F\u00e9d\u00e9ration fran\u00e7aise d\u2018\u00e9quitation o\u00f9 on estime le nombre de jeunes joueurs \u00e0 environ 2000. Le Polo de Chantilly cr\u00e9\u00e9 par Patrick Guerrand-Herm\u00e8s a permis \u00e0 de jeunes talents de percer. Des joueurs qui n\u2018auraient sans doute jamais pu jouer au polo sans ce club comme le n\u00b01 fran\u00e7ais, Brieuc Rigaux, qui est arriv\u00e9 au club \u00e0 12 ans parce qu\u2018il ne savait pas quoi faire de ses loisirs et venait brosser les poneys. Puis on l\u2018a mis sur un poney, on lui a donn\u00e9 un maillet et on s\u2018est aper\u00e7u qu\u2018il avait un talent incroyable. De fil en aiguille, les patrons l\u2018ont pris sous leur coupe, Andr\u00e9 Fabre, Philippe Fatien (avec qui il a gagn\u00e9 l\u2018Open de France) et Patrick Guerrand-Herm\u00e8s (avec qui il a gagn\u00e9 la Coupe d\u2018Or de Deauville en 2006 avec Gonzalito Pieres). Aujourd\u2018hui il est handicap 5. Dans les ann\u00e9es 90, une telle histoire aurait \u00e9t\u00e9 impossible en France. Et elle continue avec d\u2018autres jeunes issus de milieux modestes dont certains deviennent professionnels. A part les fr\u00e8res Macaire dans les ann\u00e9es 80, il n\u2019y avait jamais eu de professionnels en France.<\/p>\n

On note \u00e9galement, en Europe, que les professionnels ach\u00e8tent un peu moins de chevaux en Argentine et forment eux-m\u00eames des chevaux, pour eux ou pour le commerce. On voit \u00e0 Chantilly de plus en plus de pur-sang achet\u00e9s en France dress\u00e9s par les professionnels fran\u00e7ais. Philippe Perrier, le directeur du club de Chantilly, a m\u00eame form\u00e9 un pur-sang fran\u00e7ais qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 vendu aux Etats-Unis, puis en Argentine pour le high-goal!<\/p>\n

Au niveau du high-goal, on appr\u00e9cie le retour d\u2019un jeu plus ouvert gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 un nouveau r\u00e8glement (qui emp\u00eache de tourner avec la balle et oblige \u00e0 des backs dans les actions rapides) qui r\u00e9duit les phases ennuyeuses de petits dribblings dont Cambiaso \u00e9tait le ma\u00eetre mais qui fatiguaient un peu le public de Palermo. Avec cette nouvelle r\u00e8gle (appliqu\u00e9e en 2011) et les fr\u00e8res Pieres qui frappent plus, on revient au polo plus ouvert des ann\u00e9es 90 dont les Chapa Uno des fr\u00e8res Heguy \u00e9taient le plus bel exemple. Aujourd\u2019hui, ce polo de haut niveau, m\u00eame si les actions partent de petits dribbles mais sont suivies de grand coup de 80 yards, revient \u00e0 ces fondamentaux et c\u2019est plus plaisant \u00e0 regarder.<\/p>\n

Leider gibt es dort aber auch eine Fluktuation bei den Spielern und au\u00dfer in Polen und Ungarn steckt vieles noch in den Kinderschuhen. In Deutschland hat sich das spielerische Niveau stark verbessert. Man merkt dies zuerst an den Nachwuchsspielern, deren Eltern bereits im Polosport aktiv waren bzw. sind. Dort wurde einiges erreicht. Leider haben sich aber auch viele interessante Charaktere und Personen verabschiedet. Mir scheint, dass die Anzahl der Spieler sogar r\u00fcckl\u00e4ufig ist.<\/p>\n

\u00bfCu\u00e1les fueron los hitos y experiencias m\u00e1s importantes a nivel personal con respecto al deporte en este periodo?<\/strong> Als Oldtimer waren die herausragenden sportlichen Erfolge und Erlebnisse f\u00fcr mich in meiner Zeit in Nigeria. 1976 infiziert (der Jos Polo Club war in unmittelbarer N\u00e4he des katholischen Missionskrankenhauses, in dem ich gearbeitet habe), habe ich 1977 meinen ersten Cup gewonnen. Zwischen 1982 und 1990 war ich als +2 Goaler Captain des renommierten Kaduna Polo Clubs. 1984 war der Gewinn des Georgian und Sardauna Cups (bis 16 Goal Level) der H\u00f6hepunkt meiner sportlichen Karriere. 1992 eine schmerzhafte R\u00fcckkehr nach Deutschland. Wird Polo f\u00fcr uns weiter gehen? Durch das wahnsinnige Engagement meiner neuseel\u00e4ndischen Frau Jan haben wir es auch hier geschafft. Im Vordergrund stand die sportliche Entwicklung meiner zwei S\u00f6hne Marco und Christopher, die 1999 zu den besten Nachwuchsspielern des DPV gew\u00e4hlt worden sind. Die Jahre 2009-2012 als Vizepr\u00e4sident des DPV unter unserem hoch gesch\u00e4tzten Hans Albrecht v. Maltzahn waren aufregend, lehrreich und schmerzhaft zugleich.<\/p>\n

Um mich kurz zu fassen \u2013 \u201eLow Goal \/ Grassroots Polo has always been my passion\u201c \u00fcber die Jahre habe ich x mal an der DM Low Goal teilgenommen, s\u00e4mtliche Pl\u00e4tze gewonnen, nur leider niemals als Sieger auf dem Treppchen gestanden. 2011 in Willich war ich mit meinem v\u00f6lligen Au\u00dfenseiterteam im Finale \u2013 immerhin Deutscher Vizemeister. Die Anzahl der Spieler, Clubs und (privater) Polofelder steigt st\u00e4ndig und vor allem \u00fcben immer mehr Jugendliche unseren Sport aus. Dieses verspricht f\u00fcr die Zukunft auch eine Entwicklung des sportlichen Niveaus. So sch\u00f6n die Zunahme des Polosports auch ist, so fehlt es bei einigen der neuen Spieler am Verst\u00e4ndnis der Spielregeln und satzungsm\u00e4\u00dfigen Festlegungen. Grundprinzipien des Polosport werden noch nicht einmal im Ansatz verstanden. Hier sei nur die Festlegung angef\u00fchrt, dass ausl\u00e4ndische Spieler mindestens \u00fcber ein Handicap von +3 verf\u00fcgen m\u00fcssen. Die tats\u00e4chliche Handhabung ist mit dem Ausspruch \u201eein Argentinier muss mit Handicap +3 spielen\u201c passend wiedergegeben. Zweck der Regel ist es aber, ausl\u00e4ndische Spieler nur dann im deutschen Polo zu haben, wenn sie \u00fcber eine gute spielerische Qualit\u00e4t verf\u00fcgen. Dieses dr\u00fcckt sich darin aus, dass ein ausl\u00e4ndischer Spieler ein Handicap von +3 eines anderen Poloverbands haben MUSS. Nicht dass er bei Turnieren auf dem Platz reitet und dann mit einem Handicap von +3 spielen muss, ohne dass seine spielerischen Qualit\u00e4ten diesem Anspruch gen\u00fcgen. Mit inzwischen 350 aktiven Spielern reguliert sich vieles aber auch \u00fcber die Masse an Spielern. Trotzdem kommt es immer wieder zu ungl\u00fccklich festgelegten Spielsystemen auf Turnieren oder anderen Fehlentscheidungen, obwohl vieles bereits in den Spielregeln (der HPA) eindeutig festgelegt ist. Vielfach kommt es dann zu einem Gemeckere \u00fcber den Veranstalter, Schiedsrichter, Turnierleitung bis hin zum DPV. Jedoch bleibt es oftmals bei unqualifizierten \u00c4u\u00dferungen. Taten \u00fcber die M\u00f6glichkeiten des Verbands Dinge richtig zu stellen oder auch nur zu verstehen, werden nicht unternommen. Vielfach nehmen dieselben (unzufriedenen) Mannschaften im Folgejahr wieder am Turnier teil, ohne das Lehren gezogen werden. Hier ist eine Besch\u00e4ftigung mit den Spielregeln des Polo sehr wichtig, damit sich Polo als Sport entwickeln kann. Ein weiterer Punkt ist der Einfluss und die Wichtigkeit von Sponsoren auf Turnieren. Momentan kommt aber das Sponsorgeld dem Polosport nicht unbedingt zu gute. Mannschaften finanzieren sich weiterhin selber, tragen Nenngeld, Stall-, Reise- und Hotelkosten. Auch eine Verbesserung der Spielfeldqualit\u00e4t aus Sponsorengeldern ist nicht zu erkennen. Hier muss ein Umdenken erfolgen; auch bei den Sponsoren selber. Die Kosten einer G\u00e4stebewirtung ist doch reine Kundenbetreuung. Daher wird ein klarer Blick auf den wirklichen Anteil des Sponsors am Polosport verzerrt. Hier muss es klares Ziel f\u00fcr die Zukunft sein, mehr Geld f\u00fcr den POLOSPORT zu generieren.<\/p>\n

\u00bfCu\u00e1les fueron los hitos y experiencias m\u00e1s importantes a nivel personal con respecto al deporte en este periodo?<\/strong> Es gab im meinem inzwischen \u00fcber 30 Jahre langem Pololeben viele H\u00f6hen (und auch ein paar Tiefen). Der H\u00f6hepunkt meiner sportlichen Polokarriere war eher von Ende der 80er und Anfang der 90er Jahre. Eindeutig gr\u00f6\u00dfter Meilenstein war, dass ich in Argentinien 1987 oder 1988 das Handicap von +3 erhielt; in Deutschland erreichte ich erst 1989 diese Bewertung. Ein weiterer H\u00f6hepunkt war die Turnierteilnahme im legend\u00e4ren Ort Deauville 2002. Weiterhin hatte ich eine tolle Zeit mit Sebastian Schneberger zusammen gehabt. Nicht nur dass wir alle 12 Goal Turniere in Deutschland spielten. Wir haben mehrere Jahre eine gro\u00dfe Tour in Europa gespielt; Antwerpen, Wien, Villa a Sesta und Monte Argentario, Chantilly waren die wichtigsten Stationen. 2007 habe ich dann das erste Mal in Saint Tropez gespielt und direkt ein 12 Goal Turnier gewonnen. Was auff\u00e4llig in den angrenzenden europ\u00e4ischen L\u00e4ndern ist, dass alle Club \u00fcber Polomanager verf\u00fcgen. Durch diese erscheint der sportliche Teil insbesondere Spielpl\u00e4ne und -systeme durchdacht und sportlich orientiert sind.<\/p>\n

Ich nenne einige Nachwuchstalente aus Hamburg, wie die Br\u00fcder Cesar und Caspar Crasemann, Heinrich Dumrath, Nikolas Sandweg und Lukas Sdrenka. Diese Jungs sind mittlerweile in einem Alter zwischen 16 und 20 Jahre alt und gewinnen ein Turnier nach dem anderen, darunter, als absolute Kr\u00f6nung in 2013, das Team, zusammengesetzt mit den Br\u00fcdern Crasemann, Heinrich Dumrath und dem jungen Argentinier Adrian Laplacette, die \u201eDeutsche Meisterschaft High Goal 2013\u201c, ausgetragen im August, spektakul\u00e4r und w\u00e4hrend zwei Finaltage, unter den Augen der insgesamt ca. 20.000 begeisterten Zuschauer \u00fcber zwei Finaltage auf dem Maifeld im Olympiapark Berlin, und in dieser Team-Zusammensetzung verdient gewonnen hat. Das alles bedeutet aber auch ein sehr gro\u00dfes Engagement der jeweiligen Familien in diesen wunderbaren Sport. Denn die Eltern, meist selbst hochmotivierte, aktive Polospieler, stellen ihrer Jugend auch entsprechend gute Polopferde zur Verf\u00fcgung und erm\u00f6glichen ihnen ein professionelles Training im In- und Ausland. Aber auch in der Berliner Region hat sich einiges in Sachen Nachwuchs getan. Wie z.B. in unserem Heimatverein, dem PPCCBB e.V. z.B. sind meine S\u00f6hne Felix, Moritz und Lucas seit fr\u00fchster Kindheit begeisterte Anh\u00e4nger des Polosports und k\u00f6nnen ebenfalls auf viele sportliche Erfolge zur\u00fcckblicken. Momentan gibt es in unserem Club vier neue, polobegeisterte junge Leute, die durch das Maifeldturnier im Olympiapark Berlin, das wir dort seit 2010 organisieren und veranstalten, unausweichlich auf den Polosport aufmerksam wurden und mittlerweile selbst, sehr engagiert an unserem Trainingsangebot f\u00fcr Anf\u00e4nger teilnehmen, mit dem ehrgeizigen Ziel, bereits im kommenden Jahr erfolgreich an offiziellen DPV-Turnieren teilnehmen zu k\u00f6nnen. Selbst meine Tochter Lisa ist seit diesem Jahr interessiert, denn es macht ihr nun auch sehr viel Spa\u00df, mit jungen, ihrer Altersklasse entsprechenden Personen im Club zusammen zu treffen um gemeinsam mit ihnen Stick & Ball zu \u00fcben. Viele junge- und \u00e4ltere Nachwuchstalente kommen aus der klassischen Reiterei und haben hierdurch schon im Vorfeld einen gro\u00dfen reiterlichen Vorteil und k\u00f6nnen sich bereits von Anfang an auf das Training mit dem Stick & den Ball konzentrieren und mindestens ebenso wichtig, auch auf die Theorie, bzw. die Regelkunde! Rackham Schr\u00f6der, Gesch\u00e4ftsf\u00fchrer von \u201eEngel & V\u00f6lkers Commercial\u201c, \u00fcbrigens ist E & V seit 2011 Titelsponsor, bzw. Namensgeber f\u00fcr unser Turnier dem \u201eEngel & V\u00f6lkers Berlin Maifeld Cup\u201c, der Titel wird innerhalb der \u201eDeutschen Polo Meisterschaft High Goal\u201c ausgetragen. Er trainiert seit dem letztem Jahr gemeinsam mit seinem achtj\u00e4hrigen Sohn Bruno und beide sind bereits Mitglieder in unserem Club, als auch im DPV (Deutscher Polo Verband) und beide werden es sicher noch sehr, sehr weit im Polosport bringen. Der Nachwuchs f\u00fcr den Polosport resultiert nat\u00fcrlich vermehrt aus Erwachsenen, denn sowohl das weibliche-, als auch das m\u00e4nnliche Geschlecht wird durch die vielen offiziellen DPV Polo Turniere, die \u00fcberall in Deutschland ausgetragen werden, aufmerksam und sie lassen sich begeistern und das wiederum, l\u00e4sst die Poloszene nat\u00fcrlich auch in Deutschland insgesamt, stetig und erfreulich wachsen.<\/p>\n

Das unser Polo Club seit 2010 wieder die M\u00f6glichkeit hat, hochkar\u00e4tige PoloTurniere auf dem historisch belegten Maifeld, im Olympiapark Berlin austragen zu d\u00fcrfen, dass ist ein wirkliches Highlight nicht nur f\u00fcr die nationalen- und internationalen Polospieler, wir meinen, insbesondere auch ein Highlight f\u00fcr die Berliner, die Hauptstadt und die vielen G\u00e4ste aus Nah und Fern! An dieser Stelle m\u00f6chte ich mich bei meiner Familie, dem Berliner Senat und insbesondere bei der Senatsverwaltung f\u00fcr Inneres und Sport, ganz besonders herzlich f\u00fcr die gro\u00dfe Unterst\u00fctzung und die stete engagierte Zusammenarbeit, unter Mitwirkung aller Beteiligten, bedanken. Der PPCCBB e.V. ist stolz, dass unsere Poloturniere mittlerweile auch auf \u00fcberregionales Interesse, seitens der Polo-Weltverb\u00e4nde und mittlerweile auch seitens der Presse st\u00f6\u00dft. Dies wiederum f\u00f6rdert den Polosport als auch unser eigenes, pers\u00f6nliches Engagement, hier immerzu an den Aufgaben wachsen zu wollen, um mit einem noch gr\u00f6\u00dferen, pers\u00f6nlichen Einsatz zur F\u00f6rderung des Polosports, insbesondere in Deutschland, positiv beitragen zu k\u00f6nnen. Ich m\u00f6chte an dieser Stelle nicht vers\u00e4umen zu erw\u00e4hnen, dass Polo ein absoluter Familiensport ist. Die Liebe zum Tier, zur Natur ist eine unbedingte Voraussetzung f\u00fcr diesen Sport und ich kann mich an die vielen Jahre, als meine vier Kinder noch klein waren erinnern, es gab kaum ein Wochenende, wo wir nicht alle gemeinsam am Gr\u00fcn standen, tobten, ritten, spielten, es war und ist noch immer, obschon sie nun erwachsen sind und wir gerade deswegen, aus Liebe zu diesem Sport, viele Sommerwochenenden gemeinsam am Gr\u00fcn verbringen k\u00f6nnen, einfach fantastisch! Meine dreij\u00e4hrige Enkelin Lia ist bereits jetzt schon ein kleiner Fan des Polosports und liebt die Pferde und ich nehme sie immer gerne mit, um mit ihr auch ein wenig zu reiten.<\/p>\n

In Asien haben viele neue Clubs er\u00f6ffnet, auch russische Spieler trifft man immer h\u00e4ufiger an. Polo scheint jede Grenze zu \u00fcberschreiten. Sogar in den Emiraten findet erstmalig ein Damen-Polo\u2013Turnier statt! In Deutschland, vor allem in Hamburg, Berlin und S\u00fcddeutschland haben wir viele neue junge Nachwuchsspieler und Talente, die es zu f\u00f6rdern gilt.<\/p>\n

F\u00fcr mich war der erste gro\u00dfe Schritt \u00fcberhaupt, die Angst vor der Geschwindigkeit zu verlieren. Der zweite Meilenstein war, das Spiel langsam aber nachhaltig lesen zu lernen, im Team spielen zu k\u00f6nnen und meinen Beitrag zum Erfolg zu leisten. Der gr\u00f6\u00dfte Meilenstein ist es, sich immer weiter verbessern zu k\u00f6nnen. Kein Ende in Sicht.. Polo fordert einen immer wieder heraus. Man br\u00e4uchte mindestens zwei Leben, um es wirklich gut zu lernen :), aber auch die t\u00e4gliche Arbeit und der Umgang mit den Pferden lehrt einen jeden Tag aufs Neue. Wir haben bei traumhaften Poloturnieren auf der ganzen Welt mitgespielt und wunderbar aufregende Menschen kennen gelernt! Das war ein H\u00f6hepunkt in unserem Polo-Leben.<\/p>\n

\u00bfC\u00f3mo se ha desarrollado el polo en los \u00faltimos 10 a\u00f1os desde su punto de vista?<\/strong> Ich denke, mit Blick auf die Entwicklung des Polosports in den vergangenen 10 Jahren, k\u00f6nnen drei Aspekte hervorgehoben werden. Sportlich hat sich Polo ganz sicher nicht in Richtung Breitensport entwickelt, ist aber doch ausgedehnter aufgestellt als noch vor zehn Jahren. Das Interesse w\u00e4chst zusehends und immer mehr Reitbegeisterte beginnen mit dem Polosport. Nennenswert hat sich meiner Meinung nach auch das Spielniveau verbessert, hier spielen Ausbildung und Nachwuchsf\u00f6rderung eine entscheidende Rolle. Zweitens ist zu beobachten, dass sich der kommerzielle Teil doch bemerkenswert entwickelt hat und in den vergangenen Jahren durch etliche wirtschaftliche Hochs und Tiefs gegangen ist. Sponsoren und Unternehmen aus den verschiedensten Branchen setzen werbetechnisch auf den Polosport und haben hier ihre Nische gefunden. Polo wurde zum Lifestyle. Drittens sind die Poloverb\u00e4nde, im Zusammenhang mit den st\u00e4rker gewordenen Verordnungen wie Doping, Pferdehaltung, Einzonungen usw., immer wichtiger geworden. Die Verb\u00e4nde haben sich den Aufgaben gestellt und sich kontinuierlich diesen vielschichtigen Themen angenommen und Ma\u00dfnahmen umgesetzt. Als logische Konsequenz wird unser Verband f\u00fcr die sportliche Entwicklung und die damit verbundene Vision verantwortlich bleiben.<\/p>\n

Ein Meilenstein war sicherlich, dass ich vor 12 Jahren vom Dressur- und Springsport auf Polo umgestiegen bin. Ich habe mich \u00fcber die regelm\u00e4\u00dfigen Turnierbeteiligungen mit mehr oder weniger mittelm\u00e4\u00dfigem Erfolg gefreut. Haupts\u00e4chlich ging es mir darum, einen Ausgleich zu meinem gesch\u00e4ftlichen Alltag zu finden. Es freut mich nat\u00fcrlich sehr, dass sich mittlerweile auch mein Sohn, welcher jahrelang Springsport aus\u00fcbte, f\u00fcr den Polosport begeistern kann. Als Vater ist man besonders stolz, seinen eigenen Sohn im gleichen Team zu begleiten. Leider musste ich unfallbedingt nach f\u00fcnf Teilnahmen an der Jaeger LeCoultre-Trophy im Jahre 2010, von meinem vielgeliebten Turnier in Genf, f\u00fcr zwei Jahre Abstand nehmen, sodass ich erst ab 2013 mit meinem Sohn zusammen einige kleine Turniere bestreiten konnte. Sicherlich als Meilenstein zu betrachten, ist die \u00dcbernahme des Amtes als Pr\u00e4sident der Swiss Polo Association (SPA) im Jahr 2007. Die Arbeit im Verband und die damit verbundenen Ver\u00e4nderungen hinsichtlich struktureller und sportlicher Art, sagen mir sehr zu. Erw\u00e4hnenswert und auch mit etwas Stolz ist hier die Juniorenentwicklung in den einzelnen Clubs und die daraus resultierende erste Junioren Schweizermeisterschaft zu nennen, welche bekanntlich die Basis f\u00fcr die Rekrutierung f\u00fcr unserer Schweizernationalmannschaft stellt.<\/p>\n

Viele Veranstalter machen heute professionelle Events. Beeindruckend finde ich den starken Trend zum Beach Polo. In Timmendorf hat das erste Beach Polo stattgefunden, ein Jahr sp\u00e4ter haben wir den Beach Polo World Cup auf Sylt ins Leben gerufen. Die Begeisterung des Publikums ist unglaublich. Das liegt daran, dass man als Zuschauer sehr nah am Geschehen und an den Pferden und Spielern ist. Man ist mittendrin anstatt aus der Distanz zuzuschauen. Action, Dribbeln, Adrenalin \u2013 alles ist auf einmal direkt nachvollziehbar. Das macht Spa\u00df. Ich finde toll, wie viele Menschen sich mit gro\u00dfer Freude diesem f\u00fcr sie ganz neuen Sport \u00f6ffnen. Der Trend geht auch hin zu Hallenpolo, was den Sport das ganze Jahr \u00fcber spielbar macht. Ich denke es ist besser, die Pferde das Jahr \u00fcber durchzutrainieren anstatt sie im Winter ganz aus dem Training zu nehmen, auf die Weide zu stellen und vor der neuen Saison dann wieder bei Null zu beginnen. Auch Winterpolo ist weiter auf dem Vormarsch und hat an vielen Orten bereits eine gro\u00dfe Tradition. Trotzdem muss nat\u00fcrlich die ureigene Form des Sports, das Rasenpolo in seiner Qualit\u00e4t erhalten und weiter ausgebaut werden. In dem Zusammenhang finde ich absolut bemerkenswert, wie sich dank Thomas Winter die deutschen Nachwuchsspieler entwickeln. Sie sind super erfolgreich und spielen unglaublich tolles Polo. Durch die Zucht in Deutschland und Importe aus Argentinien wird auch die Qualit\u00e4t der Pferde immer besser.<\/p>\n

Seit acht Jahren organisiere ich die German Polo Masters Sylt. Polo hat schon immer zu meinem Leben geh\u00f6rt, seit ich ganz klein bin, war ich st\u00e4ndig mit im Hamburger Polo Club und bin dort sozusagen gro\u00df geworden. Das Eindrucksvollste in den vergangenen zehn Jahren war aber, nach zwei Jahren Vorbereitung mein erstes eigenes Event \u2013 den Beach Polo World Cup Sylt in H\u00f6rnum \u2013 auf die Beine zu stellen.
