It felt like the end of the world at yesterdays finale of the 15th German Polo Masters Sylt. Before the games started dark clouds concentrated threateningly above Keitum already. What happened next no one in the audience could have expected: in the second chukker the sky opened its locks and hard rain fell down on the favorites Team Bombardier and Team König Pilsner. It did not take long till the ground was drenched and the green just being played on by the finalists of the Sal. Oppenheim Cup became a pond.
To guarantee the safety of players and horses was impossible at this point of time. Therefore both teams up to the break in the second chukker with a tie of 1:1 take the coveted title. The audience searching for protection in two VIP-tents – one from the main sponsor Sal. Oppenheim – did not let the weather destroy their good mood. Quite the contrary: with the rising number of refugees including personalities like Dana Schweiger the party mood rose, too.
Thunderous applause finally started in the barbecue area of the VIP-tent where executive chef Leonhard Barder of the Hamburg restaurant River Grill and his team fulfilled true masterstrokes: all grills had been stashed away in only a few minutes to make room for the winning teams where tasty steaks had been frizzling shortly before. Piero Dillier (0), Paul Netzsch (+1), Lucas Labat (+7) and Gastón Gonzales (+2) of Team Bombardier and Christian Grimme (0), Lukas Sdrenka (+1), Gastón Maíquez (+6) and Octavio Olmedo (+3) of Team König Pilsner took the giant trophy right here and together. Even the hosts presented of good cheer despite the weatherly escapades and wished the winning teams well.
After the grey clouds had been gone and the first sun beams meet the soaked polo field the winning team „Köpi“ jumped into the flat pond that used to be recognized as the pitch at the beginning of the finale. An anniversary tournament that could not have been any more extraordinary! In the end only the dirty cars leaving the northern German island in columns were reminding of this special finale at the 15th German Polo Masters Sylt.
