La Dolfina claims Hurlingham Open

After several postponements due to heavy rains in the region, the final of the 120th Hurlingham Open, the second competition of the Argentine Triple Crown, was held on Saturday, November 9th.
In the highly competitive final, Adolfo Cambiaso (+10), David Stirling (+9), Pablo Mac Donough (+10) and Juan Martín Nero (+10) of team La Dolfina Hope Funds defeated team Ellerstina Piaget by 18-16 and are the winners of the 2013 Hurlingham Open. La Dolfina previously had claimed this season’s Tortugas Open (POLO+10 reported) and now has the chance to win the Argentine Triple Crown. The Argentine Open, the last and most important tournament of the Argentine Triple Crown, take off Saturday, November 16th.
In the final of the Hurlingham Open, Ellerstina Piaget definitely made a better start. In the first chukker, they took the lead by 3-1, with Pelon Stirling scoring La Dolfina’s single goal. Originally, the +9-goaler had been suspended for the final of the Hurlingham Open, following a red card received at the Ellerstina Gold Cup. But Sterling was allowed to serve his suspension in the subsidiary final of the Diamond Cup at La Dolfina Polo Club and therefore La Dolfina could play in the final of the Hurlingham Open with its original line-up.
La Dolfina came back from being down, tied in third chukker, 7-7 and took a 9-7 lead by half time. In the fifth chukker, Ellerstina made a comeback, but shortly afterwards La Dolfina scored three times in a row, 14-11. Ellerstina pressed hard during the seventh chukker and cut the margin to one goal, 14-15. However, Ellerstina’s hopes to change tack were blasted by Adolfo Cambiaso and Pelon Stirling in the eighth chukker who extended the lead of La Dolfina to 18-14. Ellerstina scored two more times, but in the end Facundo Pieres (+10), Gonzalo Pieres (+10), Mariano Aguerre (+10) and Nicolás Pieres (+9) had to admit defeat by 18-16.
After winning the Tortugas and the Hurlingham Open La Dolfina now has the chance to claim their third win at the Argentine Open and by this taking home the Argentine Triple Crown.
