Winning the Tortugas Open is not enough for them: La Dolfina Hope Funds stay on course for success and win the opening match of the Hurlingham Open. On Tuesday, Adolfo Cambiaso (+10), David Stirling (+9), Pablo Mac Donough (+10) and Juan Martín Nero (+10) of team La Dolfina defeated their opponents Alberto Heguy (+7), Francisco Elizalde (+7), Bautista Heguy (+8) and Eduardo Heguy (+8) of team Chapaleufú by a large margin, 22-10. Scene of the second tournament of the Argentine Triple Crown is the Hurlingham Club in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
This year Chapaleufú had to participate in the Qualifying Tournament to win a place in the Hurlingham Open. At the beginning Chapaleufú took the lead, 3-2. But then La Dolfina began putting pressure on the opposing team and at the end of the second chukker Cambiaso’s team lead by 7-4. Chapaleufú could not come back from being down, instead La Dolfina continued to extend their lead. The match ended with a sensational result for La Dolfina, 22-10.
In the second match of the zone A teams, Alegría Sancor Seguros encountered La Aguada ICBC. Unexpectedly, Pablo Pieres (+8) was not able to play for Alegría due to his having had an appendicectomy the previous day. He will not be taking part in the rest of this year’s Argentine Triple Crown and will be replaced by Diego Cavanagh (+7). The opposing team La Aguada with Facundo Sola (+8), Guillermo Terrera (+7), Miguel Novillo Astrada (+9) and Ignacio Novillo Astrada (+9) team took the lead during the first chukker, extended the lead in the course of the match and left the field as the winner, 20-15.
On Wednesday the four zone B teams met at the Hurlingham Club. Team Magual with Alejando Muzzio (+8), Ignacio Toccalino (+8), Marcos Di Paola (+8) and Jaime García Huidobro (+8) had won a place in the Hurlingham Open after taking part in the Qualifying Tournament. In the first match of the day they encountered Facundo Pieres (+10), Gonzalo Pieres (+10), Mariano Aguerre (+10) and Nicolás Pieres (+9) of team Ellerstina Piaget, the recent Tortugas Open finalists.
Ellerstina got of a better start and at the end of the first chukker they lead by three goals. Despite their lower handicap, team Magual put up a good fight and at the end of the fifth chukker they lead by 10-9. Ellerstina took up pursuit and left the field as the winner by 17-12. During the sixth chukker, the youngest of the Pieres brothers, Nicolás, had to leave the field due to injury, being replaced thereafter by Francisco de Narváez Jr.
The duel between Guillermo Caset (+9), Ignacio Heguy (+9), Rodrigo Ribeiro de Andrade (+8) and Bartolomé Castagnola (+9) of team La Natividad Amarok and Agustín Merlos (+9), Cristian Laprida (+8), Eduardo Novillo Astrada (+9) and Alejandro Novillo Astrada (+8) of team La Aguada Las Monjitas ICBC was a neck-and-neck race and went down to the wire. In the course of the even match both teams kept up exchanging goals and the match ended in a tie, 13-13. In the following sudden-death overtime Guillermo Caset scored the winning goal for La Natividad, 14-13.
The games of the 120th Hurlingham Open will continue at the weekend. Tomorrow’s match day begins with an encounter of the zone A teams La Dolfina and Alegría Sancor Seguros, followed by team Chapaleufú meeting the foursome of team La Aguada ICBC in the second match of the day. The matches of zone B will proceed on Sunday: Ellerstina plays against La Aguada Las Monjitas ICBC and in the second duel La Natividad Amarok will face Magual.
