On the past weekend it was time for Ladies Polo at Wicklow Polo Club: Three teams competed against each other in the Ireland’s 16th International Ladies Polo and fought for victory. The participating female players came from Germany, the United Kingdom, the USA, the Netherlands and of course Ireland. The system of the tournament was held in was round-robin Tournament, which means each team encounters all other teams.
At the end each team had won once and lost once and so the numbers of goals had to bring the decision which team won the tournament. Because now team Germany and team Ireland were dead even, the winner had to be decided by toss-up – lucky winner was team Ireland, consisting of Stefanie Schmalz (-2) from Germany, Annemieke Goos (-1) from the Netherlands as well as Siobhan Herbst (0) and Caroline Keeling (+1) from Ireland.
The tournament was organised by Wicklow Polo Club under the direction Siobhan Herbst with the friendly assistance of her parents Michael, founder of the club, and Wendy Herbst. Venue of the event was a polo field on the estate of Joe O’Connell, founder of the Ashford Studios, in Ashford, Ireland. Host Joe O’Connell was the only man who was allowed to participate in the tournament. Wicklow Polo Club is located at the eastern shore of Ireland in the south of Dublin.
