The best players of the Julius Bär Beach Polo didn’t waste a ball or a chance at the World Cup Sylt. Gastón Maiquez (+6, Team Audi) and Thomas Winter (+5) reached the final with Matthias Sdrenka (0, both Team Lanson). Both teams fought up to the last seconds of the game. Finally Gastón and his teammates won the annual beach chukka for Team Audi with a close 7:6,5. With nearly acrobatic feats as well as toughness the finalists entertained the audience, which was attracted by the fantastic weather and came to Hörnum on Sylt’s eastern beach where the Julius Bär Beach Polo World Cup then celebrated its fifth anniversary.
The game for third place featured Team König Pilsener versus the international and celebrity staffed Team Maus Immobilien. With a handicap of +4 Jamie Morrison, well-known polo player, music producer and owner of the Royal Berkshire Polo Club in England, started for the first time in Hörnum. Together with Jack Kidd, Jamie had the initial idea for “Polo in the Park“ at Kidd’s club on Barbados, which is now one of the most successful polo events in Europe. Jamie just played beach polo in Miami Beach. Sandbanks said: “This unique atmosphere here on Sylt is indescribable. It has a Mediterranean flair – like a St. Tropez of the North.“
Team colleague and compatriot Steve Rose (0) brought Jamie to Sylt with him. Finally the British duo had to admit defeat against Team Köpi with 3:6,5. Team Julius Bär with Lukas Sdrenka (+1) and Sven Schneider (+3) lost just as closely with many chances up to the last minute against Frank Mauersberger (0) and Tim Ward (+2) of Team Schloss Göhrde. After a confident 5:2 in the second chukka, Tim Ward was unstoppable and scored his team to the final result of 6:7,5. Intense chukkas, awesome players and horses and the gorgeous scenery of Sylt made the fifth Julius Bär Beach Polo World Cup Sylt 2012 an absolute success. The name-giving sponsor expressed his personal gratitude to the island of Sylt by donating 10,000€ to the Foundation Coast Protection Sylt.
