In recent years, Ellerstina has won six consecutive Tortugas Open, which is the opening tournament of the Argentine Triple Crown. Now this series of wins has come to an end. In the final of the Tortugas Open, La Dolfina defeated Ellerstina by 16-14 and as a result won the Tortugas Open for the very first time.
It was a hard-fought match. Both teams were tremendously strong and had a huge desire to win. Ellerstina had a stronger start and scored two times. But La Dolfina took the lead at the end of the first chukker after three consecutive penalty conversions, 3-2. During the second chukker it looked like Ellerstina would live up to the spectator’s expectations being the favourites of the tournament. After the second chukker the Pieres brothers and Mariano Aguerre were in the lead by 6-5. La Dolfina quickly reclaimed the lead and dominated the third chukker, 8-6. But Ellerstina fought back and equalized in the fifth chukker, 10-10.
From then on the match became a real tug war. Every time a team scored, the other team levelled immediately. For this reason both teams went into the final seventh chukker with the scores level at 13-all. In the last chukker the teams continued exchanging goals: Adolfo Cambiaso scored for La Dolfina, Nico Pieres counterattacked by striking for Ellerstina, followed by La Dolfina taking the lead again. 15 seconds before the sound of the bell La Dolfina scored once more and thereby claimed the victory at the Tortugas Country Club.
It is the first time La Dolfina wins the Tortugas Open. The team is one of the most successful teams in the world and has already won countless tournaments, the Tortugas Open not being numbered among them. Up to this point La Dolfina had concentrated mostly on winning the Palermo Open. This year the foursome seems to have its eyes on all three tournaments of the Triple Crown.
Even though it is the first win of the Tortugas Open for team La Dolfina, this does not apply to all teammates. Adolfo Cambiaso, Pablo Mac Donough and Juan Martin Nero have won the tournament before, however back then playing for team Elllerstina. For Perlon Stirling it is the first time winning the tournament.
