The Ghana Polistas win

Following a closely contested and fast paced final, Ghana Polistas beat Rutland Ridge 7 – 6 to win the coveted Land Rover Africa Cup, the continent’s leading knock out polo tournament. The Ghana team included two of the youngest players in the tournament, the teenage Awuah-Darko brothers Harold and Goseph from Ghana along teammates, brothers – Lance and Brett Watson.

The tournament, which featured players from South Africa, Ghana and Zimbabwe, took place in Johannesburg at the Inanda Club, Sandton. The Land Rover Africa Cup kicked off on Friday, 18 July with a press welcome evening hosted by the City of Joburg for polo players, sponsors and the media.

This premier event saw some of Africa’s top polo players competing in a three-day knock out tournament, which concluded on Sunday 20 July. The teams that participated were Land Rover, African Polistas, Ghana Polistas, Inanda Renegades, Citr Pohlo, Rutland Ridge, Inanda Blues, MarWari, Norfolk Village and Farmbarn.

As the players and polo ponies showed their prowess on the field, VIPs, celebrities and media swanked in the Polo Room, Equestrian Lounge, Land Rover Lounge and MultiChoice Africa corporate hospitality suites – including fashion designers David Tlale & Shaldon Kopman, socialites, Jen Su, Penny Lebyane, Gerry Elsdon and the event MC, Bridget Masinga-Khati amongst many more.

Highlights of the day included a grooms’ race, a curtain raiser; Horse vs. Machine race, won by the Range Rover Sport, culminating with the Land Rover Africa Cup final in the afternoon.
