Spring is just around the corner, and Santa María Polo Club is fully prepared and ready to welcome the teams and audience for the first tournaments of the season: XXXV Memorial José Ignacio Domecq and XII Memorial Conde de Guaqui.
The Spring Tournaments were named upon personalities that were strongly bounded to polo and to Sotogrande. The tournament Memorial Conde de Guaqui is celebrated in remembrance of D. Alfredo de Goyeneche y Moreno, Count of Guaqui and Marquis of Artasona who was an outstanding rider; furthermore, the Memorial José Ignacio Domecq, is celebrated to honor D. José Ignacio Domecq González, a renowned owner of a winery and polo player from Andalucía, who reached a handicap of +5. Santa María Polo Club in Sotogrande, in this way, pays respect to this distinguished personalities, linked to Andalucía and the equine and polo world.
This year the XII Memorial Conde de Guaqui opens the season taking place from April 4th to 6th, and the handicap to enter the tournament is +10 to +12 per team, for the first category, and 0 to +4 per team, for the lower handicap category, a new initiative from Santa María Polo Club to broaden the possibility to more participants. The XXXV Memorial José Ignacio Domecq, starting the weekend after the tournament, takes place from April 11th to 20th, and also the handicap to enter the tournament is +10 to +12 per team, and also the 0 to +4 category.
Last year, both tournaments were very successful: the Memorial Conde de Guaqui had six teams of four players competing against each other, resulting of a winning team, Santa Quintería with J. M. Entrecanales (+1), J. Entrecanales (+2), P. Soria (+6) and G. Entrecanales (+2). In like manner the Memorial José Ignacio Domecq hosted five teams, and the team Sapphire/ Bayswater London Dry Gin formed by Íñigo Zobel (+1), Santiago Laborde (+5), Martín Iturraspe (+6) and Alejandro Peñafiel (0) emerged as winners.
