Like every year, the new polo season in Sotogrande starts with spring. The four main fields of the Santa María Polo Club at the location Los Pinos are ready for the traditional spring tournaments: the 35th Memorial José Ignacio Domecq and the 12th Memorial Conde de Guaqui.
The spring tournaments were named after personalities that were strongly connected with polo and with Sotogrande. The tournament Memorial Conde de Guaqui is celebrated in remembrance of D. Alfredo de Goyeneche y Moreno, Count of Guaqui and Marquis of Artasona who was an outstanding rider. Furthermore, the Memorial José Ignacio Domecq, is celebrated to honour D. José Ignacio Domecq González, a renowned owner of a winery and polo player from Andalucía, who reached a handicap of +5. Santa María Polo Club in Sotogrande, in this way, pays respect to this distinguished personalities, linked to Andalucía and the equine and polo world.
This year the 12th Memorial Conde de Guaqui opens the season taking place from April 4th to 6th, and the handicap to enter the tournament is +10 to +12 per team, for the first category, and 0 to +4 per team, for the lower handicap category, a new initiative from Santa María Polo Club to broaden the possibility to more participants.
The 35th Memorial José Ignacio Domecq, starting the weekend after the tournament, takes place from April 12th to 20th, and also the handicap to enter the tournament is +10 to +12 per team, and also the 0 to +4 category.
