On October 5th, the new season at the Malta Polo Club opened with the Engel & Völkers King of Spain Cup. The teams Engel & Völkers and Bollinger Champagne met in a hard-fought match. Soon Martin Arrigo, Chris Delia, Patrick Filetti and Miles Lockwood of team Bollinger Champagne took the lead, but Engel & Völkers showed fighting spirit and a desire to win. During the last chukker Karl Galea, Ben Farrugia, Jeremy Besancon and Julian Mamo, who shared a position, as well as Jean Vella stepped it up a notch and in the end left the field as the winners by 8-6-win.
The chukkers were commented by John Kent, a young British player and commentator, who had come from England to Malta especially for the event.
Off the playing field, the spectators had the chance to test-drive the newest Mercedes Benz models on a test route, which was made extensive use of.
The Engel & Völkers King of Spain Cup was hosted by the Malta Polo Club in association with Privé Events. King Alfons, who presented the club as well as the cup in 1928, is one of the most famous club members of the past.
