Ellerston wins Gold Cup in Sotogrande

The 42nd edition of the Torneo Internacional Land Rover de Polo in Sotogrande ended with exciting final matches. On Saturday Ellerston encountered UAE Polo Team in the final of the Copa de Oro Hublot (high goal). Both teams fought to the last second to win the title and numerous spectators enjoyed many goals during the thrilling match. Ellerston with Ali Patterson (+2), John Williams (0) as well as Gonzalo and Facundo Pieres (both +10) defeated Sheika Maitha (0), Sebastian Merlos (+9), Lucas Monteverde (+10) and Santiago Stirling (+3) of UAE Polo Team by 18-17 and hence took the trophy of the most important tournament of the polo season at the Santa María Polo Club home.
Two weeks before Ellerston had already won the silver cup of the tournament and in this final they had a great start. But UAE Polo Team recovered and was in hot pursuit of Ellerston. In the end, Facundo Pieres scored the crucial goal in overtime and brought his team the victory. Sebastian Merlos of UAE Polo Team was awarded best player of the tournament.
Yesterday the tournament ended with the final matches in the leagues low goal and medium goal. The Copa de Oro Valecuatro (medium goal) went to Peter Silling (0), Juan Britos (+4), James Beim (+7) and Tommi Beresford (+1) of team Equus. They defeated Pablo Mora (+1), Lawrence Isola (+1), Tomás F. LLorente jr. (+5) and Horacio F. Llorente jr. (+5) of Sapphire / Bayswater London Gin by a large margin, 15-5.
Richard Fagan (+1), Edwin Morris Lowe (+2), Santiago Torreguitar (+3) and Martin Stegemann (0) of Silex are the winners of the Copa de Oro Makarthy (low goal). They won against Paul Knights (0) Pepe Simo (+1), Mario Gomez (+4) and Luciano Irazabal (+1) of Windmill Farm by 8-7.
32 teams had come to the Santa María Polo Club to compete for five weeks in 159 matches for the coveted trophies. More than 1,100 horses and 120 players from 20 countries, among them professionals like Adolfo Cambiaso, Facundo and Gonzalo Pieres as well as Pablo Mac Donough, gave their best.
