Horses in Need

World Horse Welfare held its annual charity polo day at the prestigious Guards Polo Club, welcoming 180 of the charity’s supporters to the beautiful surroundings of Smith’s Lawn in Windsor Great Park.

A packed-full auction, conducted by well-known auctioneer Russ Williams, and raffle raised almost £30,000 on the day; funds that will support the work of this well-known international horse welfare charity. Among the lots were places on the charity’s adventure ride in Colorado and a trip to watch world famous horse race, the Dubai World Cup.

World Horse Welfare works hard to rescue and rehabilitate neglected and abused horses in the UK before finding them loving, new homes. The charity’s international work benefits working horses by equipping owners in some of the world’s poorest communities with the practical skills to improve horse welfare.

During the event guests were treated to some superb polo action in the semi-final of the 12-goal Phoenician Cup played on The Queen’s Ground. After a fiercely competitive match, the Mad Dogs polo team of Pedro Harrison (+3), Alan Fall (0), Guy Gibrat (+4) and Dirk Gould (+5) triumphed and eventually went on to win the tournament. The Most Valuable Player was George Meyrick and the Best Playing Pony prize went to Nipper, an Australian-bred 10 year old chestnut mare) owned by Dirk Gould.

“We had a wonderful day thanks to the hard work of the team at Guards Polo Club and the support of our six dedicated volunteers, who made the day such an enjoyable success for our guests, and helped in a collective effort to secure vital funds towards our charitable work here in the UK and overseas,” said World Horse Welfare’s Director of Fundraising, John Blake.

World Horse Welfare is so grateful to the many sponsors and to those who donated to the auction and raffle: Alltech ltd.; ARC; Ascot flowers; Bottlegreen; Dodson & Horrell; Goodwood racecourse; Guards Polo Club; Hatch Mansfield; Horse & Hound; HPower; Jane Holderness-Roddam; Jen Townshend; Jilly Cooper; La Martina; Lee McKenzie; Lingfield Park; MacIntosh Foundation; Meydan Racecourse; Michelle McCullagh; Mick Duff; Mulberry; Premier Printers; Sicon; Square Circle Designs; Sydney Arms Racing Club; Tamarind Collection and World Wine Agencies.
