Those who appreciate fast, beautiful polo with quality, magnificent horses, prepared like top-level athletes and top players are in for a treat from this weekend onwards at the Polo Club du Domaine de Chantilly with the launch of the Bourbon Trophy.

Faithful for years to Chantilly and to his Swiss team Marquard Media, the Argentinean handicap 7 Martine Aguerre Jr, ex-winner of the Copa Camara and player of the Argentine Open, Martin Aguerre Jr, will be the third headliner of the Bourbon Trophy.

The two French 6-goalers will also be back on track: Pierre Henri Ngoumou from Normandy will play for Mungo, which will also feature the young Frenchman Ulysse Eisenchteter as well as the spectacular Tete Storni (5), and Brieuc Rigaux will play for the Swiss team Lynx alongside the best player of the World Cup playoffs, the Spaniard Pelayo Berazadi (5).

Monterosso 14 – 11 Twelve Oaks The Castle – Ground-Flemish Farm
King Power 13 – 10 Marques de Riscal – Noel Farm

Twelve Oaks, fresh from victory in the Royal Berkshire’s Prince of Wales’s Trophy, found themselves up against Monterosso (rec 1 goal on handicap) on the Castle Ground at Flemish Farm on day two of the Cartier Queen’s Cup. A line-up change for Monterosso brought Adolfo Cambiaso Jnr into the line-up in place of Pelon Stirling, resulting in a one-goal on handicap. Quickly adding to their advantage, Monterosso raced out to a 4-0 lead and carried their strong play throughout the first half. Ignacio Toccalino and Cambiaso combined for seven of Monterosso’s eight goals in the first half while the team finished a perfect 6 for 6 from the field and 2 for 2 from the penalty line to extend the lead to five (9-4). A yellow card given to Toccalino and two penalty conversions for Twelve Oaks’ Joaquin Pittaluga in the third chukka helped overcome the slow start as they began to match Monterosso stride-for-stride. A huge pass from Cambiaso sprung Toccalino on a breakaway to open the scoring in the second half, but Twelve Oaks quickly recovered, turning to Pittaluga and Cristian Laprida to try and fight back within reach. Despite 10 combined goals from the duo, Monterosso took advantage of nearly every opportunity in the game, finishing an astounding 83% from the field to complete the 14-11 triumph.

Newcomer to the high-goal stage, Marques de Riscal, led by nine-goaler Sapo Caset, met King Power at Noel Farm in their 2022 debuts. Top Srivaddhanaprabha enters this season with three new teammates in Mackenzie Weisz, Nico Pieres and James Harper, but they quickly demonstrated that King Power is a team to watch in the Cartier Queen’s Cup. Scoring the first five goals of this game, four from Pieres, gave King Power a commanding lead. However, Marques de Riscal showed their resilience and held the potent King Power attack to just one goal over the third and fourth chukkas. Relying on four penalty conversions from Caset, Marques de Riscal fought back to within one, trailing 7-6 at the end of the fourth chukka. Returning to the quick, passing style of play that proved to be successful early in the game, King Power exploded for four goals, including a tally from Srivaddhanaprabha in a decisive fifth chukka. Playing from behind throughout the game, Marques de Riscal made a final push to begin the sixth chukka, pulling back within two after a goal from Facundo Llosa, but the well-balanced King Power team stayed focused to secure a 13-10 victory.

Park Place Vaara 20 – 11 Thai Polo NP Princes’ Ground Guards Polo Club
Dubai Polo Team 12 – 11 La Magdeleine Dukes Ground Guards Polo Club

The prestigious Cartier Queens Cup tournament began today with the first 22-goal match on Guards Polo Club’s new Princes’ Ground. The result was a successful Park Place Vaara debut in an impressive match against Thai Polo NP. Coming off a successful season in the USA for Park Place, Hilario Ulloa, Juan Britos, Josh Hyde and new addition to the team, Santos Merlos, drew upon established chemistry to give Park Place Vaara a first half lead (8-6). Combining for all eight of their team’s goals, Ulloa and Britos were relentless towards goal with Ulloa adding two penalty conversions. Trying to recapture the magic from last year, Thai Polo NP responded with the Hine brothers, Ned and Louis, answering with six goals to trail by just two at the end of the high-scoring first half. Always ahead in this game, Park Place Vaara surged out of the half-time break with an 11-1 run that was led by perfect 7 for 7 shooting in the game from Ulloa. Despite eight penalty conversions from Ned Hine, Thai Polo NP were unable to slow the electric Park Place Vaara attack as Ulloa finished with a game-high 11 goals to claim an impressive 20-11 victory.

Moving to The Duke’s Ground for the second match of the opening day, the return of Rashid Albwardy’s Dubai Polo Team to the high-goal stage provided a nail-biting game that came down to the final moments. A competitive opening half featured a back and forth start to the match with the two teams exchanging goals to remain tied through the first two chukkas. Five goals from La Magdeleine’s Pablo MacDonough paced his team’s attack, including three successful penalty conversions, while Dubai Polo Team were unable to convert any of their first four penalty attempts. Regrouping in the third chukka, Camilo Castagnola drove forward to score his second and third goals of the first half to give Dubai a narrow 7-5 lead at half-time. Creating separation in the second half, Castagnola continued his success from the field, adding an additional four goals on just five shots, while an organised defence held La Magdeleine to just two goals from MacDonough over the fourth and fifth chukkas. Holding a three-goal lead and just one chukka away from victory, Dubai faced unrelenting pressure from La Magdeleine, who brought the game back within one thanks to an incredible shot from distance by MacDonough with just one minute of the match remaining. Time was now La Madeleine’s enemy and on the bell Dubai Polo Team were ensured a successful return to Guards Polo Club, winning this match 12-11.

Summer 2022 at Monte-Carlo beach is organic, beautiful and healthy – Chef Mélanie Serre arrives at Restaurant Elsa.

There’s a lot going on at Monte-Carlo Beach in summer 2022! The Elsa 100% organic and wild-caught fish restaurant, which wants to promote a new generation of gastronomy, is delighted to welcome chef Mélanie Serre from 11 May 2022. The talented 36-year-old, formerly Executive Chef of Joël Robuchon’s Atelier Etoile, will be able to develop her sincere, generous and flavoursome cuisine in line with the organic, local and seasonal spirit dear to the restaurant, which has been Ecocert certified since 2013. Monte-Carlo Beach, which has represented the stylish seaside venue since the 1930s, will also be revealing its new beach design, with fine sand and precious wood, and a new space for children in its legendary Olympic swimming pool. Finally, the hotel spa welcomes the luxury, ecological, ethical, organic and French skincare brand, PAOMA.

Mélanie Serre takes over the reins of Restaurant Elsa, offering “heartfelt cuisine”

Chef Mélanie Serre

Originally from the Ardèche region in France, Mélanie Serre developed a passion for cuisine from a very young age. She trained in prestigious establishments from the Eden Roc in St. Barts to Hôtel Métropole Monte-Carlo, which was her first encounter with Monaco, under the guidance of Christophe Cussac. In 2015 she landed her first job as chef at L’Atelier Étoile Paris, a restaurant with two Michelin stars, where she became Executive Chef one year later. In 2020 she spread her wings, joined the Parisian restaurant Louis Vins and won the Gault & Millau Young Talent prize. Cheerful, warm and passionate, her cuisine reflects her personality, focusing on the product, the harmony of flavours and colours, with generosity but without ostentation. She has a modern vision of gastronomy, favouring simplicity and a wealth of flavours. The intention is not to impress, but to create enjoyment!

“I’m delighted and very enthusiastic to come back to Monaco and to work with the talented team at Elsa and in close collaboration with exceptional local producers, such as Domaine d’Agerbol and Jardin des Antipodes. I particularly like all the work from field to fork, varying the inspirations around seasonal fruits and vegetables, completely enhancing the products, with respect and recognition for what the land and sea provide us,” comments Mélanie Serre.

“Monte-Carlo Beach is loyal to its approach combining organic and local produce and reducing waste for enhanced flavours, preserved health and authentic well-being by nature. Mélanie Serre won us over, just like she will delight the hearts and taste buds of Elsa customers, where the season promises to be rich in flavours and surprises!” adds Danièle Garcelon, General Manager of Monte-Carlo Beach.

To be enjoyed from 11 May, these three signature dishes in particular:

. Carrots with cumin, vegetable leaf pesto, orange and ginger juice
. Cockles and clams in cannelloni, lettuce velouté, Brousse goat’s cheese and Vermouth sauce
. Fillet of red mullet, potato gnocchi, peppery baby rocket and black garlic condiment

Monte-Carlo Beach, a paradise between the sea and the pine trees, reveals its new look

A villa on the seafront connected to nature, Monte-Carlo Beach is the stylish seaside venue par excellence, an unmissable stopover, both for club members and customers from all over the world. In 2021, the hotel revealed its new beach, in the image of its original 1930s’ beach, while protecting the site thanks to a positive biodiversity reef dyke. For the 2022 season, the beach unveils a 200-metre ribbon of fine sand and a new, elegant and comfortable wooden structure with a magnificent view of the bay and La Vigie. The furniture in the 180 Beach Club tents has been completely renewed to create a space in perfect harmony with its environment. A soothing interlude with only the Mediterranean on the horizon; a sunny and replenishing retreat in an unspoilt setting.

Monte-Carlo Beach cares about the environment and is committed to protecting local biodiversity. Pointe de la Vigie, within the establishment, and its superb pine forest is an LPO (Bird Protection League) refuge. Monte-Carlo Beach has built several nesting sites where more than 20 different bird species including 10 nesting and 15 protected species are welcomed.

The commitments of Monte-Carlo Beach were recently rewarded by the first “Hotel & Lodge Green” special prize. This new category honoured by the editorial teams and the judging panel of the “Hotel & Lodge Awards 2022” this year awarded Monte-Carlo Beach, in particular for to its zero-plastic and waste recycling policy and its drastic energy and water management.

Monte-Carlo Beach welcomes PAOMA, first luxury skincare brand that is ecological, ethical, organic and made in France

Designed as a natural, efficient and sustainable beauty ritual, PAOMA harvests the best of nature and makes unique, organic-certified formulas which cherish all skin types and nurture well-being. The entire PAOMA brand is COSMEBIO labelled and COSMOS Organic-certified by ECOCERT, with 99 to 100% of natural origin ingredients and made in France. All PAOMA products come in pink lacquered recyclable and refillable containers, and the products that need to be rinsed off are accompanied with PAOMA 100% organic cotton washable squares. This approach is completely consistent with that of Monte-Carlo Beach, where taking care of oneself and the environment is a natural part of everyday life.

Soft mobility

Monte-Carlo Beach launches its first 100% electric shuttle between hotels and thus reinforces its commitments to softer forms of transport with:

– An electric courtesy vehicle
– Four charging points for electric vehicles

WELLINGTON, Fla., May 16, 2022—Casablanca won its third tournament of the spring season Sunday at Grand Champions Polo Club.

Casablanca (Meredith Lovegrove, -1, Grant Ganzi, 3, Nic Roldan, 8, Tommy Collingwood, 5) defeated Audi (Marc Ganzi, 2, Tony Calle, 2, Pancho Bensadon, 7, Sugar Erskine, 6), 12-9, to capture the Spring Challenge Cup.

Roldan was named Most Valuable Player. Tinta, played by Marc Ganzi in the second and sixth chukkers, was selected Best Playing Pony.

Nic Roldan and Pancho Bensadon

„It was a team effort and Nic played really, really well,“ said Ganzi, who turned in his finest performance of the season both offensively and defensively. „I was happy that we all played well in the final. It was the most fun I‘ve had.“

Working well together as a team, Casablanca controlled the game from start to finish and never relinguished the lead.

Casablanca jumped out to a 2-1 lead with goals from Collingwood and Roldan in the opening chukker. Casablanca went on to lead 4-2, 6-3 at the half, 7-6 and 8-7 going into the sixth chukker. Casablanca led by as many as four goals (6-2) during the third chukker.

Sugar Erskine and Grant Ganzi

„We talked a little about a gameplan before the game and when we got on the field we made a little more of a concrete plan defensively,“ said Ganzi, the Brand Ambassador for Casablanca. „It was like I envisioned we would play on Friday but we just didn‘t end up doing it. It just made sense for us to play our natural positions in the final.“

A big sixth chukker where Casablanca outscored Audi, 4-2 and had another four goal lead (11-7) put the game away.

Tommy Collingwood and Nic Roldan

„It shows how we got things flowing and clicking,“ Ganzi said. „In the beginning we started out really strong and that was the key. The most important thing we did was being able to zone in and play better in the last chukker.

„In the second half we didn‘t play that well. We had moments of really good plays and then moments when we fouled, didn‘t cover the man or not helping out each other as much, but we kept pushing.“

Lovegrove, a show jumper who has been one of The Polo School‘s top students, also turned in her best game of the spring season.

Marc Ganzi

„Obviously, it was a lot of fun,“ Ganzi said. „I was really proud of Meredith the way she was able to step into this game. This is definitely the highest goal she‘s played ever and the fastest. It was nice to get a chance to play with her and Tommy, who I have known a long time.“

Grant Ganzi scored a game-high six goals. Roldan had four goals and Lovegrove and Collingwood each had one.

For Audi, Marc Ganzi scored a team-high four goals. Calle had three goals and Erskine and Bensadon each had one.

Grant Ganzi and Tony Calle

In the Just For The Thrill Of It subsidiary game, Sebucan (Michael Payne, 0, Pablo Pulido, 2, Jason Crowder, 5, Alejandro Novillo Astrada, 8) defeated Bored Ape (Ryan Shank, -1, Tomacho Pieres, 6, Pablo Spinacci, 6, Juan Bollini, 4), 12-8.

Trailing 4-3 after the first two chukkers, Sebucan rallied with a 2-0 third chukker for a 5-4 halftime lead. Sebucan never trailed after that, outscoring Bored Ape, 7-4, in the second half. Sebucan scored three unanswered goals to open the fourth chukker for an 8-4 lead.

Payne scored a game-high six goals for Sebucan. Crowder and Astrada each had three goals.

For Bored Ape, Pieres had a game-high five goals. Shank had two goals and Bollini added one off a safety-60.

Best Playing Pony Tinta played by Marc Ganzi

To advance into the championship final, Casablanca edged Bored Ape, 9-8, in a shootout in the opening semifinal and Audi defeated Sebucan, 11-9, in the other semifinal on Friday.

The spring season has been one of the closest in competition, with most of the games being decided by two goals or less.

„I think the way the teams are put together is so balanced,“ Ganzi said. „We have a really good number of pros who combine well with the sponsors and that makes it interesting. We are playing at a fun level and being able to play around with any team combination makes it really competitive and really close.“

Just For The Thrill Of It winners Jason Crowder, Alejandro Novillo Astrada, Pablo Pulido, and Michael Payne

Casablanca won the first two spring tournaments: the Eastern Challenge (Steve Cox, Grant Ganzi, Pablo Spinacci, Tomacho Pieres) and WPL Beach Polo Cup (Grant Ganzi, Juancito Bollini, Nic Roldan). Knockers Field (Annabelle Gundlach, Marc Ganzi, Brandon Phillips, Alejandro Novillo Astrada) won the Sun Cup.

The spring schedule (subject to change because of weather and scheduling conflicts) continues this week with the May 20-22 Grand Champions Cup and May 27-29 The Memorial and WPL Polo Pride.

In the past polo season, some dreams of passionate players came true – among others in Zurich, Berlin, Cortina or Aspen, while others were shattered.

During the final editorial touches for the current issue of POLO+10, which you are holding in your hands right now, one quote in particular stuck in my mind. It’s from the Italian ex-banker, artist and visionary Gian Franco Brignone, who died in January and whose work we commemorate from page 78 onwards: “I have given my life for my dreams and my dreams have given me life.”

Isn‘t it a wonderful thing to have dreams in life? To hold on to previously unfulfilled dreams and goals even as we grow older – and to try to make them come true with passion and dedication? And even if we still don‘t succeed: At the end of life, we regret above all what we have NOT done; what we have NOT tried …

In this context, I find the tips from mental coach trainer Kristin Grube very inspiring: She advises us from page 44 onwards, for example, that we should internalise our goals and write them down in a kind of diary. Claire Tomlinson has definitely fulfilled many of her big dreams and goals: from page 70 we remember the icon of international polo and the first woman in the world to achieve a handicap of +5.

I hope you enjoy looking back at wonderful highlights of the past season – such as the Patrons Cup 2021 from Polo Park Zurich or the Italia Polo Challenge in Cortina – and I wish you with all my heart that you will succeed in making one of your still unfulfilled dreams come true in the coming season.

At last! After a two-year hiatus due to the health crisis, polo is back in Gstaad, at the Saanen airport, from August 18 to 21 for four glamorous days dedicated to the oldest of team sports: the Hublot Polo Gold Cup Gstaad!

The magnificent resort town of Gstaad and its sublime mountain environment are indeed glamorous. But on the field, it‘s all about sport and high-level equestrianism, as the Hublot Polo Gold Cup Gstaad demands it to be. The players are both horsemen and sportsmen who follow an extremely rigorous physical and technical training. But the real stars of this sport are the horses. They are the first polo athletes, bred and selected since the beginning of the last century (mainly in Argentina) to become the best partners, the „legs“ of their riders even. Lively, intelligent, playful, fast, tough, brave, these four-legged rugby players are very endearing horses. As soon as the player has thought of an action, his horse responds and sometimes even anticipates because it knows the game and its rider so well. They are also sometimes called „ponies“ and adapt to all conditions and therefore to the altitude of 1100 m, making this the highest summer tournament in the world.

There will be about one hundred and twenty of these little horses setting up camp for a week on the grounds of the Saanen airport to accompany the sixteen players of the four teams who are dreaming of winning this coveted trophy of the international circuit. Three teams, GSTAAD PALACE, HUBLOT and newcomer KIELDER AGRO, will try to topple title holders CLINIQUE LA PRAIRIE, which will be led this year by the Frenchman from Zurich, Sébastien Le Page. The „boss“ of Polo Park Zurich has built a very competitive team around the Argentinean handicap* 6, Raul Laplacette, winner of last year‘s Pakistan Open. KIELDER AGRO is a new team and will be led by the Swiss Fabio Meier who has entered a 7-goal player, the Argentine Ezequiel Martinez-Ferrario, who is used to playing the high-goal season in Palm Beach where he won the famous Whitney Cup and who also won the Silver Cup in Dubai.

Dario Musso has spent most of his career in France, where he has won the Silver and Gold Cups in Deauville and the French Open in Chantilly, among others. Together with the Brazilian Joao Novaes – a Gstaad devotee and former winner of the French Open – they will be a strong support for the Swiss Cedric Schweriwearing the colors of the GSTAAD PALACE. This captain, loyal to Gstaad, will be more than motivated to renew the victory he celebrated in 2018.

Finally, the HUBLOT team, led by the American Marco Elser, finalist of the last edition of the Hublot Polo Gold Cup, will be able to count on the Argentinean handicaps 5 Teo von Neufforge and Pedro Fernandez Llorente.

Beyond this absolutely exciting sport – and all the more spectacular in Gstaad because the public can watch the games right from the border of the field – the Hublot Polo Gold Cup Gstaad is a unique experience in Switzerland. It goes beyond the simple sporting competition: an incredible green setting, on an airport surrounded by majestic Alpine peaks, transformed into a polo club for the duration of four days, on a quality ground that has been „worked“ and maintained for many months before the tournament. This polofield allows a rare proximity with the players and the horses, and is surrounded by a VIP village and exhibitors with original luxury products to discover, a resolutely friendly atmosphere, a catering area for the public and a playground for children. Another tradition of this unique tournament is the parade of the teams on Friday, a picturesque event in the streets of Gstaad. A different way of experiencing high-level polo, unique to the Hublot Polo Gold Cup!

* The handicap corresponds to the level of the polo player (it varies between -2 and +10). The handicap evolves according to the player‘s performance in games and the progress made during the year. The highest handicap in Europe is 7 (England). The very rare handicap 10 is currently held by 9 Argentinians and one Uruguayan.
