The much-anticipated match between undefeated Dubai Polo Team and Park Place Vaara initiated play on the 10th day of this year’s Cartier Queen’s Cup tournament. It was evident from the first throw-in that this would be an attacking game. Park Place Vaara’s Santos Merlos struck first but was quickly met with a response from Matt Perry. Stepping into the spotlight, two goals rom Juan Britos contributed to an impressive four-goal opening chukka, leaving Park Place Vaara ahead 4-2. Effectively using Joshua Hyde in the number 1 position, Park Place Vaara accelerated forward and Hyde collected two assists, while his team remained a perfect 6 for 6 from the field through two chukkas. Trailing by four, Dubai Polo Team turned to tournament-scoring leader Camilo Castagnola, as a field goal and penalty goal helped Dubai Polo Team inch closer. However they remained down by three at half-time (8-5). The first team to complete all four league games in this competition, Dubai Polo Team faced a tough task in the second half in slowing Park Place Vaara’s high-powered attack. Foul trouble for Park Place Vaara provided an opening for Dubai Polo Team that resulted in three penalty conversions for Castagnola. Dubai suddenly found themselves trailing by just one. Trying to hold on to their shrinking lead, Park Place Vaara relied on the play of 10-goaler Hilario Ulloa, who produced three consecutive goals for his team to maintain a slim lead. Then, after Albwardy had jumped on the loose ball to tie the score at 13-all, Castagnola fought through traffic and scored from distance to give Dubai Polo Team their first lead of the game, 14-13. Inside the final two minutes, Castagnola teed up a safety and sent the ball through the posts to secure a 15-13 win and head to the quarter-finals (4-5 June) with a perfect 4-0 record.

A must-win game for both teams to have any chance at securing a place in the quarter-finals, Clinova and Thai Polo NP met on the famed Queen’s Ground in a late afternoon match. Holding a one-goal advantage on handicap, Thai Polo NP produced one of the best chukkas of the tournament thus far, scoring five goals with perfect shooting from both the field and the penalty line. Ignacio Negri led the way with two goals, while all four Thai Polo NP players added their names to the scoresheet just minutes into the match. Stunned by the opening seven minutes, Clinova turned their focus to the defensive end, holding Thai Polo NP scoreless in the second chukka and allowing them to slowly fight their way back into the game. A lone goal from Alejandro Muzzio provided the only attack of the chukka as two missed Penalty 4 attempts prevented Clinova from pulling any closer. Exchanging goals at the end of the half, Thai Polo NP rode their early success to remain ahead by three (7-4). Clinova overcame a stagnant attack in a crucial fifth chukka thanks to the play of the American Jared Zenni, who accounted for both Clinova goals. Still hanging on to their three-goal lead despite scoring more goals in the first chukka than the rest of the game put together, Thai Polo NP entered the sixth chukka with Clinova piling on the pressure to tie the game. Back-to-back Penalty 3 conversions for Malcolm Borwick brought Clinova to within one. However Cesar Crespo’s second goal of the game held off Clinova’s comeback attempt and secured Thai Polo NP their first win of the tournament, a 10-9 victory.

Challenging for a place at the top of League Three, Park Place and Vikings met on the Castle Ground at Flemish Farm to open play on day nine of the Cartier Queen’s Cup. Asserting early dominance in the match, Park Place raced out to a 4-0 lead, led by three goals from Facundo Pieres and a quick passing attack that resulted in two of their three field goals coming from a pass to goal. Diego Cavanagh provided a response for Vikings, accounting for all three of their goals in the opening half, but Park Place continued to play at a lightning pace, scoring four goals for the second consecutive chukka. Francisco Elizalde provided the second part of the elite duo with Pieres for Park Place as they combined for seven first half goals. Despite a yellow card to Keelan McCarthy, Park Place carried on, holding a significant 9-3 lead at the half-time break. Igniting their attack through defense, Vikings held Park Place scoreless in the fourth chukka, while Juan Martin Zubia converted two penalties and a field goal to instantly cut the deficit in half. Adding another penalty conversion for his fourth unanswered goal, Vikings seemingly held the momentum, but Park Place reorganised and would score six of the next seven goals to separate themselves once again. Pieres finished with a game-high seven goals to ensure Park Place’s 15-9 victory today and sets up a thrilling encounter with Scone Polo on Sunday afternoon.

Looking to join Park Place with a 2-0 record, Scone Polo returned to competition after a week off and faced a tough Murus Sanctus team in search of their first win. Featuring a new line-up with Jose Araya and Beltran Laulhe, Murus Sanctus produced a quick start, receiving one goal each from the new additions to hold a narrow 3-2 lead. Following up teammate Facundo Sola on a run to goal, Laulhe added a second tally in the second chukka to help Murus Sanctus stay one goal ahead. This effort would kickstart a run for Murus Sanctus as Sola’s exceptional play resulted in five goals before half-time. Withstanding the early pressure, Scone Polo rotated effectively to receive contributions from all four players as part of a three-goal third chukka, but Murus Sanctus remained in control, leading 9-6 through three chukkas. Playing his second game in as many days, Poroto Cambiaso singlehandedly brought Scone Polo back into the game. Scoring four goals, two each from the penalty line and the field, Cambiaso pushed forward while they kept Murus Sanctus scoreless to take their first lead since the opening chukka. Exchanging goals in a closely marked fifth chukka left the difference unchanged as Scone Polo tried to hold off the late charge from Murus Sanctus. Coming through in the high-pressure situation, Scone Polo’s Rosendo Torreguitar converted both shot attempts in the sixth chukka, the second of which proved to be the game-winning goal in Scone Polo’13-12 triumph.

With three teams holding a 1-1 record in League Two of the Cartier Queen’s Cup as we started Wednesday’s matches, Monterosso faced a crucial game against Marques de Riscal as they challenge for a place in the quarter-finals. On the opening throw-in, Monterosso’s Ignacio Toccalino took the ball straight to goal, giving his team a 2-0 lead as they had started the match with one goal on handicap. Young Poroto Cambiaso, once again substituting for Pelon Stirling, made an early impact with a first chukka goal as Monterosso controlled the opening minutes to hold a 4-0 lead. Limited to just one field goal on six shots in the first half, the Marques de Riscal attack was stifled by a strong Monterosso defence. Scoring three of Monterosso’s final four goals of the first half, Cambiaso demonstrated why he is on his way to 10-goals, guiding Monterosso to a significant 8-2 lead at halftime. Exiting the break, Marques de Riscal brought their game to another level, scoring five consecutive goals, three from the field and two from the penalty line, to quickly pull within one-goal and instantly change the dynamic of the game. The momentum was now firmly in their favour. Guillermo Caset was instrumental to the run for Marques de Riscal, converting two penalties, while Alejandro Aznar was effective in the number one position, collecting two assists in the second half. However Monterosso’s sixth chukka goal, off the stick of Toccalino, was the only field goal they needed as it secured them a tense 10-8 victory.

Determined to capture their second consecutive victory of the tournament, Twelve Oaks produced a strong start against UAE Polo Team on The Princes’ Ground. Wasting little time, Charlie Wooldridge stepped into the spotlight off a pass from John-Paul Clarkin to open the scoring in a tightly played first chukka, but UAE Polo Team responded with a strong second chukka that gave them the lead. Two goals from Tomas Beresford, one each from the field and the penalty line, contributed to a three-goal run that pushed UAE Polo Team ahead. A game full of momentum, Twelve Oaks turned back to Wooldridge who continued his phenomenal play with two more goals to lead his team’s attack. The ball moving via the pass proved to be a successful strategy for Twelve Oaks as they finished the first half on a high, with one field goal each from Wooldridge, Cristian Laprida and Joaquin Pittaluga, to take a 7-4 lead against the defending Cartier Queen’s Cup champions. A different UAE Polo Team was seen in the fourth chukka as they accelerated forward to score three field goals on seven shots, more than they had throughout the entire first half. The key cog in their attack during this stretch was Barto Castagnola who added his first two goals of the game, plus an assist as the game became tied at 7-all with two chukkas remaining. It was evident that this match was going to come down to the final seconds as Twelve Oaks struck first in the fifth chukka scoring four goals, but again the momentum swung back in favour of the UAE team as HH Sheika Maitha left the ball for Juan Ambroggio to tie the game with two and a half minutes remaining. Under immense pressure, Beresford sent a Penalty 3 through the goal with just seconds remaining – not even enough time for a throw-in – to ensure the UAE Polo Team emerged victorious 13-12.

The second week of the Cartier Queen’s Cup began with Park Place Vaara meeting La Magdeleine in a League One matchup on The Duke’s Ground at Guards Polo Club. A game of contrasting styles, Park Place Vaara excelled from the field, while La Magdeleine found most of their attack from the penalty shooting of Pablo MacDonough. Striking early in the first chukka, MacDonough produced three penalty goals to give his team the 3-1 advantage but Park Place Vaara stormed back to take the lead just one chukka later. Holding La Magdeleine without a shot or penalty attempt in the chukka, Park Place Vaara pushed forward, receiving one goal each from Hilario Ulloa and Juan Britos. However the highlight of the chukka came as time was expiring when Santos Merlos picked up the ball on his own 60-yard line and ran the length of the field, running past MacDonough to finish the play and give Park Place Vaara a 4-3 lead. MacDonough’s fourth penalty conversion brought the game level once again at half-time as La Magdeleine would score all but two of their goals from the penalty line. In the decisive moment of the match, Park Place Vaara scored four goals in the fourth chukka, two off the mallet of Britos to take a significant three-goal lead. Scoring all 12 of their goals from the field, the proficient Park Place Vaara attack guided them to victory as perfect 7 for 7 penalty shooting from MacDonough was not enough to avoid La Magdeleine experiencing a 12-9 defeat.

Striving to be the first team to three wins in the tournament, Rashid Albwardy’s Dubai Polo Team faced Clinova at Billingbear Park, picking up where they left off with a dynamic attack led by nine goals from Camilo Castagnola. Executing an exceptional two-man game with Castagnola and Guillermo Terrera, Dubai Polo Team scored five field goals in the first two chukkas of play. This fast pace was matched by a determined Clinova side though that answered with five goals of their own as each team capitalised on their chances around goal. After Castagnola and Malcolm Borwick exchanged penalty goals to begin the third chukka, Albwardy scored his first of two goals in the game to complete a strong Dubai half with an 8-6 lead. The high-scoring game carried into the second half, but Dubai continued to have the edge as the ball moved at an electric pace. Shooting an impressive 72% from the field, Dubai Polo Team pushed their lead to five after three more goals from Castagnola and Perry’s first goal of the match. Despite some good attacking play of their own, with 10 goals through five chukkas, Clinova faced a difficult task with one chukka remaining. Two goals from Luke Wiles highlighted a final push from Clinova but the deficit was too great to overcome as Dubai Polo Team not only secured their third win but set themselves up for a highly anticipated match on Friday against Park Place Vaara for the top spot in League One.

Twelve Oaks and King Power found themselves locked in a closely contested battle with the score remaining within one goal in all but the final chukka. Trading goals early in the match, King Power’s James Harper struck from the field, while Joaquin Pittaluga and Charlie Wooldridge combined to post two goals for Twelve Oaks. Despite being outshot by their opponents in open play, Twelve Oaks’s 57% shooting accuracy and consecutive goals from Cristian Laprida sent them into the half-time break with a narrow one-goal advantage. Continuing his strong play from the first half, Laprida opened the second half scoring on a good counterattack, with Pittaluga passing the ball forward for the goal. Fighting back into the game with an exceptional passing attack, King Power controlled the fifth chukka with two assisted goals and two penalty conversions to retake the lead and enter the final chukka ahead by one. Trailing by one with two minutes remaining, Charlie Wooldridge made his impact on the match, collecting his second assist of the chukka on a pass to Pittaluga that put Twelve Oaks ahead and they held off King Power in the final moments to claim their first victory 12-10.

The reigning Cartier Queen’s Cup champions UAE Polo Team made their long-awaited debut on The Duke’s Ground at Guards Polo Club without the services of young Lucas Monteverde Jnr, who was replaced by Juan Ambroggio. Poroto Cambiaso was playing once again for Monterosso too. Wasting little time, UAE Polo Team quickly established their early dominance, blanking Monterosso in the first chukka while Tomas Beresford and Bartolome Castagnola Jnr ignited an attack for a 2-0 lead. Awarded one goal on handicap, Monterosso ended their scoring drought when Matias Gonzalez hit the posts on a drive from the field and this kickstarted a run of four unanswered goals to race into the lead. Limited to just one more goal from Tomas Beresford in the remainder of the half, Monterosso was firing on all cylinders and headed into the half-time break with a 7-4. Regrouping during the break, UAE Polo Team’s Tommy Beresford delivered five penalty conversions in a six-goal fourth chukka that quickly turned a three-goal deficit into a three-goal lead. Fixing their foul troubles, Monterosso slowly worked their way back into the game behind the duo of Ignacio Toccalino and Cambiaso, but UAE’s advantage allowed them to withstand this late push from Monterosso and register a successful debut with a 12-10 win. This victory also ensured that the UAE team won the Royal Windsor Horse Show Cup, traditionally played on the first weekend of the Cartier Queen’s Cup tournament.

Looking to keep their early momentum flowing following a win against La Magdeleine, Dubai Polo Team was back in action in the Cartier Queen’s Cup at Coworth Park 1 against Thai Polo NP. Leading his team in scoring, Camilo Castagnola was quick to get Dubai on the scoreboard with two penalty conversions from the 30-yard line. A battle from the penalty line emerged as Thai Polo NP’s Ned Hine answered Castagnola’s success with two conversions of his own, followed by goals from brother Louis and Ignacio Negri. Accounting for five of Dubai’s first half goals, including four from the penalty line, the strong play of Castagnola saw Dubai take a narrow, one-goal lead going into the half-time break. In a match which saw 25 fouls between the two teams, Castagnola and Ned Hine once again traded conversions in the fourth chukka, with a drive from Matt Perry breaking the stalemate to keep Dubai ahead 10-8. In arguably the most defining moment of the match, Castagnola found some space to score three consecutive goals and put Dubai ahead by five. Despite a late push from Ned Hine with three goals in the final chukka, Castagnola finished his day with an astounding 11 goals, moving into second in tournament scoring and ensuring Dubai Polo Team remain undefeated, winning this match 16-12.

Last playing in the Cartier Queen’s Cup in 2018, Clinova returned to the high-goal stage with a 2022 debut on the Prince’s Ground. The team had changed from the published line up, with six-goal, American player Jared Zenni, making his Queen’s Cup debut and young Englishman Luke Wiles (4 goals) teaming up with Alejandro Muzzio and Malcolm Borwick. Their opponents this afternoon were a determined La Magdeleine team led by Pablo MacDonough. Searching for their first win of the tournament, La Magdeleine took an early lead after first chukka foul trouble for Clinova resulted in three penalty conversions for MacDonough. Responding for Clinova, a combined effort from Muzzio and Borwick kept the score tied at 3-all. With only 15 shots combined from the field in the first half of play, the success of both teams from the penalty line defined play, as Borwick’s five first half conversions pushed Clinova ahead by one, leading 8-7 at half-time. After nearly three minutes of goaless play to begin the second half, an exceptional knock-in for La Magdeleine sprung Ollie Cudmore on the breakaway to tie the match. Quickly adding two more to their tally, La Magdeleine surged ahead, but this closely contested match carried into the final chukka. Borwick opened the scoring for Clinova in the final chukka to bring the game level for the seventh time. Extra time now seemed likely. However, La Magdeleine turned to tournament-scoring leader Pablo MacDonough, who completed two crucial penalty conversions to secure a hard-fought 14-11 victory.

Scone Polo, finalists in this competition last year, made their 2022 debut today against Great Oaks LL at Les Lions. Substituting for Monterosso’s David Stirling on Wednesday, Adolfo Cambiaso Jnr (Poroto) was back on the field for Scone Polo. Kicking off their season without an injured Adolfo Cambiaso, a rearranged line-up of Guillermo Terrera, Kian Hall and Rosendo Torreguitar gave Scone Polo the early advantage with one goal on handicap. Responding to their one goal deficit, Great Oaks LL’s Cruz Heguy kick-started their attack with four first half goals, including three penalty conversions to give his team a two-goal lead at half-time. Scone Polo found their stride in the second half, with contributions from Terrera and Hall combining for four goals in the fourth chukka, along with Cambiaso’s third goal of the match to re-take an 8-5 lead. Following a sharp defensive performance from Scone Polo, Heguy took advantage of Scone Polo’s foul troubles to convert two more conversions from the 40-yard line to keep Great Oaks LL in contention. Matching each other stride-for stride with four goals in open play and three successful conversions each, a final drive from Cambiaso and the handicap differential made all the difference, with Scone Polo emerging victorious 10-9.

In the second match of the day, Murus Sanctus and Vikings made their 2022 Cartier Queen’s Cup debuts on the majestic Castle Ground at Flemish Farm. Finding early success from the penalty line, Viking’s Juan Martin Zubia was a perfect 4 for 4 at the penalty line in the first half to overcome a slow start in the field, with Vikings only managing two goals from Zubia and Mark Tomlinson on eight shots from open play. Relying on their early accuracy in the field to overcome their five fouls committed in the first half, Murus Sanctus’s trio of Marcos Araya, Facundo Sola and Alfredo Cappella combined for six goals, including two conversions from Sola as the two teams remained deadlocked, 6-6, at the break. Resuming play with grit and determination, goals from Araya and Cappella gave Murus Sanctus a three-goal advantage going into the later stages of the match. Turning the tables to claw back into the lead, Vikings’ Diego Cavanagh hit his first of the match in open play, as Zubia continued to take advantage of Murus Sanctus’s foul troubles. Sending a Penalty 4 through the goal posts, Zubia tied the game at 11-all with six minutes remaining as the two teams remained in a fierce battle until the final seconds. Inside the final minute, a Murus Sanctus foul sent Zubia to the penalty line where he converted his eighth penalty goal as time expired and a triumphant Vikings team captured a 12-11 win.

Twelve Oaks, fresh from victory in the Royal Berkshire’s Prince of Wales’s Trophy, found themselves up against Monterosso (rec 1 goal on handicap) on the Castle Ground at Flemish Farm on day two of the Cartier Queen’s Cup. A line-up change for Monterosso brought Adolfo Cambiaso Jnr into the line-up in place of Pelon Stirling, resulting in a one-goal on handicap. Quickly adding to their advantage, Monterosso raced out to a 4-0 lead and carried their strong play throughout the first half. Ignacio Toccalino and Cambiaso combined for seven of Monterosso’s eight goals in the first half while the team finished a perfect 6 for 6 from the field and 2 for 2 from the penalty line to extend the lead to five (9-4). A yellow card given to Toccalino and two penalty conversions for Twelve Oaks’ Joaquin Pittaluga in the third chukka helped overcome the slow start as they began to match Monterosso stride-for-stride. A huge pass from Cambiaso sprung Toccalino on a breakaway to open the scoring in the second half, but Twelve Oaks quickly recovered, turning to Pittaluga and Cristian Laprida to try and fight back within reach. Despite 10 combined goals from the duo, Monterosso took advantage of nearly every opportunity in the game, finishing an astounding 83% from the field to complete the 14-11 triumph.

Newcomer to the high-goal stage, Marques de Riscal, led by nine-goaler Sapo Caset, met King Power at Noel Farm in their 2022 debuts. Top Srivaddhanaprabha enters this season with three new teammates in Mackenzie Weisz, Nico Pieres and James Harper, but they quickly demonstrated that King Power is a team to watch in the Cartier Queen’s Cup. Scoring the first five goals of this game, four from Pieres, gave King Power a commanding lead. However, Marques de Riscal showed their resilience and held the potent King Power attack to just one goal over the third and fourth chukkas. Relying on four penalty conversions from Caset, Marques de Riscal fought back to within one, trailing 7-6 at the end of the fourth chukka. Returning to the quick, passing style of play that proved to be successful early in the game, King Power exploded for four goals, including a tally from Srivaddhanaprabha in a decisive fifth chukka. Playing from behind throughout the game, Marques de Riscal made a final push to begin the sixth chukka, pulling back within two after a goal from Facundo Llosa, but the well-balanced King Power team stayed focused to secure a 13-10 victory.

The prestigious Cartier Queens Cup tournament began today with the first 22-goal match on Guards Polo Club’s new Princes’ Ground. The result was a successful Park Place Vaara debut in an impressive match against Thai Polo NP. Coming off a successful season in the USA for Park Place, Hilario Ulloa, Juan Britos, Josh Hyde and new addition to the team, Santos Merlos, drew upon established chemistry to give Park Place Vaara a first half lead (8-6). Combining for all eight of their team’s goals, Ulloa and Britos were relentless towards goal with Ulloa adding two penalty conversions. Trying to recapture the magic from last year, Thai Polo NP responded with the Hine brothers, Ned and Louis, answering with six goals to trail by just two at the end of the high-scoring first half. Always ahead in this game, Park Place Vaara surged out of the half-time break with an 11-1 run that was led by perfect 7 for 7 shooting in the game from Ulloa. Despite eight penalty conversions from Ned Hine, Thai Polo NP were unable to slow the electric Park Place Vaara attack as Ulloa finished with a game-high 11 goals to claim an impressive 20-11 victory.

Moving to The Duke’s Ground for the second match of the opening day, the return of Rashid Albwardy’s Dubai Polo Team to the high-goal stage provided a nail-biting game that came down to the final moments. A competitive opening half featured a back and forth start to the match with the two teams exchanging goals to remain tied through the first two chukkas. Five goals from La Magdeleine’s Pablo MacDonough paced his team’s attack, including three successful penalty conversions, while Dubai Polo Team were unable to convert any of their first four penalty attempts. Regrouping in the third chukka, Camilo Castagnola drove forward to score his second and third goals of the first half to give Dubai a narrow 7-5 lead at half-time. Creating separation in the second half, Castagnola continued his success from the field, adding an additional four goals on just five shots, while an organised defence held La Magdeleine to just two goals from MacDonough over the fourth and fifth chukkas. Holding a three-goal lead and just one chukka away from victory, Dubai faced unrelenting pressure from La Magdeleine, who brought the game back within one thanks to an incredible shot from distance by MacDonough with just one minute of the match remaining. Time was now La Madeleine’s enemy and on the bell Dubai Polo Team were ensured a successful return to Guards Polo Club, winning this match 12-11.

The UAE Polo Team win The Cartier Queen’s Cup 2021

HH Sheikha Maitha bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the daughter of the Ruler of Dubai, and her UAE Polo Team won the Cartier Queen’s Cup 2021. They beat Scone Polo on The Queen’s Ground at Guards Polo Club in six exciting chukkas. Cartier has proudly sponsored this high-goal tournament since 2012 and has been a supporter of polo worldwide for more than 35 years.

Fifteen world-class teams entered this year’s tournament and have been playing over the past three weeks in a bid to reach the final. The Cartier Queen’s Cup final was a thrilling and competitive match. HH Sheikha Maitha and the UAE Polo Team defeated David Paradice’s Scone Polo, adding their name to the trophy for the first time. Scone Polo were favourites to win this final as they feature the World’s Number One player Adolfo Cambiaso and his talented, 15-year-old son Adolfo Cambiaso Junior but some fabulous play from the UAE Polo Team’s Tomy Beresford, Tomas Panelo and Polito Pieres ensured that the UAE team won 10-6.

HH Sheikha Maitha received the prestigious silver cup from Cartier UK Managing Director, Laurent Feniou. Team-mate, 21-year-old Tomas Panelo was named the Cartier Most Valuable Player, while JB Bleach, an 11-year-old chestnut mare, owned by the UAE Polo Team and played this afternoon by Polito Pieres received the Cartier Best Playing Pony prize. This pony was bred by the former England polo team captain James Beim.

Before the main match presentations, Laurent Feniou presented the trophy to the Park Place team. This subsidiary final had been played for earlier in the day. Park Place, without their injured patron Andrey Borodin, defeated Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha’s King Power team 12-9 in a close game that delivered some wonderfully fast-paced polo. King Power’s patron did not go home empty handed though as he was named the Most Valuable Player.

Cartier was delighted to celebrate the Cartier Queen’s Cup final once again in the company of friends of the Maison. Guests enjoyed an intimate lunch and afternoon tea in the Cartier enclosure, followed by this exciting polo match. Amongst notable attendees were Cartier Ambassadors Ramla Ali and Maisie Williams. Ikram Abdi, Grace Carter, Ellie Goulding, Laura Haddock, Michael Halpern, Naomie Harris, Damson Idris, Christopher Kane, Candice Lake, Tinie Tempah, Saffron Vadher, Micheal Ward.
