UAE ll Polo Team 13 – 9 Schockemohle & Vikings 14 – 13 Park Place

The UAE Polo Team ll secured their first win of the 2021 edition of the Cartier Queens Cup, defeating Schockemohle 13-9. The teams were all square (2-2) after the first chukka but the UAE team gradually pulled away. Hugo Taylor did a great job in defence for UAE and his hard work was reflected in the 13-6 scoreline at the end of the fourth chukka. Team-mate Alfredo Capella had dominated the scoring in the first half of this match, firing through six goals. Lucas Monteverde Junior took over in the fourth, adding three further goals to the three he had already scored in this game. With Jaime Huidobro joining in with a goal in the third this was very much a  team effort from UAE ll.  So it was a little surprising that they took their foot of the gas and did not score again in this match. Meanwhile Schockemohle carried on battling, with Jack Richardson and Patrick Maleitzke adding to their team’s tally in the final two chukkas, although it was not enough to alter the final outcome. Some great team-work from UAE Polo ll early on had reaped benefits for this team.

Siri Evjemo-Nysveen’s Vikings team’s win this afternoon is a fantastic example of playing until the very last minute of every game. This team were trailing Park Place from the second chukka until the sixth but never gave up hope. High-goal fortunes can always change in a moment but trailing 13-10 when the opposition includes Facundo Pieres and Juan Britos is definitely a big ask. Clearly Juan Martin Zubia had not read the form book as he was on fire today, scoring the majority of the Vikings’ goals, including all the goals scored in the final chukka.  John Watson again deputised for Siri who is still battling an injury, swapping places at half-time, but the change in personnel did not alter the Vikings’ resolve. They believed in themselves and in their ponies and today it paid off.

Guards Polo Club is delighted to announce that a new 22-goal tournament – The Prince of Wales’s Championship Cup – will be played for the first time this season. HRH The Prince of Wales has offered his personal support for this high-goal competition as well as suggesting the name.

The Club’s Chairman Brian Stein said: “We are honoured to have the support of His Royal Highness with regard to this tournament. He played much of his polo, including the high-goal at Guards Polo Club, winning The Queen’s Cup in 1986 and it is wonderful that we can honour His Royal Highness in such an appropriate fashion.”

It will be the first time in the Club’s 66-year history that Guards Polo Club has hosted two Hurlingham Polo Association-approved, 22-goal tournaments concurrently. Brian Stein confirmed that the Club’s grounds development plan had been the key to enable the Club to launch this tournament. “The successful introduction of the redeveloped Princes’ Ground in 2020 signalled to the global polo community that Guards Polo Club was investing heavily in its grounds, focusing on creating the very best possible playing surfaces,” explained the Chairman.

The new tournament’s August dates also ensure that the world’s top players can comfortably compete in the UK’s other major high-goal competitions. Team entries will close on 1 July and the Club hopes that the August fixtures will enable non-playing members, their guests and additional spectators to watch these fast-paced matches if the covid regulations are relaxed as expected. The Club will publish more information about ticketing and hospitality after 17 May.

Dillon Bacon’s team, which had produced some wonderful team polo over three weeks in late summer, once again brought their impressive style of polo to the Queen’s Ground at Guards Polo Club to win this coveted cup. They beat Andrey Borodin’s Park Place 9-8 in a sudden-death, seventh chukka.

Dillon, who was later named the Cartier Most Valuable Player, was thrilled with this win, describing it as a “dream come true”. Talking to Ebe Sievwright of Polocam TV after the game he said: ”I have dreamed of winning The Queen’s Cup ever since I came [to Guards Polo Club] with my father as a young kid. You see this level of polo – the players, the horses, the field – and  you dream of being on that field and winning – so it really is a dream come true.”

Park Place, who received a goal on handicap, were in their third successive Cartier Queen’s Cup Final but struggled to find their form in the first half of this match. Les Lions/Great Oaks had clearly done their homework and were successful in preventing Facundo Pieres in particular from making his trademark, fast runs to goal. The winners were 8-5 ahead going into the final chukka, not least thanks to Barto Castagnola making the most of any space and younger brother Jeta firing through penalties with ease.

All credit to Park Place though, who never gave up hope. They had the horsepower and the experience and so when Will Harper fired through an equalizer 8-8 in the final moments of the sixth chukka, extra time was inevitable, and Park Place were very much back in contention. Both sides then had chances in this extra, seventh chukka before Jeta blasted though the winner for Les Lions/Great Oaks.

It was a shame that such a wonderful final had to be played behind closed doors due to the coronavirus pandemic that was sweeping the world in 2020. Although the Club did ensure that every moment of every match – some 30 games –  was filmed by Polocam TV so that members and polo lovers around the world could still watch 22-goal polo at its absolute best.

The absence of spectators also meant the absence of Cartier’s always impressive hospitality.  Laurent Feniou, Managing Director of Cartier UK, title sponsor of this tournament since 2012, could not attend as he was self-isolating at home due to an overseas trip but did send a message to all the finalists. “It has been incredible to see such powerful games played by some of the very best polo players in the world, during this year’s Cartier Queen’s Cup Polo, despite the unprecedented turn of events this year. I am truly inspired by the resilience and talent of these wonderful players capturing the true essence and spirit of the sport.”

Although Cartier did make sure that all the players headed home with some impressive prizes, including Cartier Tank watches to the winners. One prize was the coveted Cartier Best Playing Pony prize, which this year went to the stallion Chalo Angelo. This magnificent horse was bred by Lolo Castagnola, who won the Queen’s Cup himself in 2003 when playing with the Dubai polo team and played by both of his sons in this final – Barto in the second and fifth chukkas and Jeta during that all-important extra time.

Despite the difficulties the pandemic has caused to the global polo community, 10 top teams had entered this year’s Cartier Queen’s Cup tournament and earlier in the day Brian Stein, Chairman of Guards Polo Club, presented Alessandro Bazzoni of the Monterosso Polo Team with the Cartier Trophy.

This was the first time in the history of the competition that a Cartier Queen’s Cup match has been played between a husband and a wife. Alessandro was competing in this tournament for the fourth time while his wife Siri was making her Cartier Queen’s Cup debut with her MT Vikings squad. This was another close game, played over six chukkas, with Monterosso just stealing a 6-5 win in the final chukka. Alessandro was rewarded with the Cartier Most Valuable Player prize as well as heading home with the Cartier Trophy.

Charity final raises more than £6,000 for Smart Works Reading and Guards Polo Club announce new tournament sponsor from 2021

Siri Bazzoni’s MT Vikings confirmed their dominance in ladies’ polo by securing the Guards Ladies Charity Polo Final for the Lord Patrick Beresford Trophy, 4½ – 4,  on Bank Holiday Monday at Guards Polo Club. This was their third ladies title this year, after victories at the Royal Berkshire and Cowdray Park.

Another big winner on this day was Smart Works Reading, the official charity of the Guards Ladies’ Polo Tournament. As the polo had to be played behind closed doors Smart Works Reading was unable to host its popular fundraising day at Smith’s Lawn. So they teamed up with Guards Polo Club to host an online auction and raffle that was live throughout this year’s tournament. Thanks to some frantic bidding and generous donations the day raised more than £6,000 for Smart Works Reading.

In the final itself, Siri’s team (rec ½ goal on handicap) narrowly defeated Varvara Borodina’s Park Place by that very margin, 41/2 – 4, in a nip-and-tuck game on The Queen’s Ground. Park Place were 2 – ½ up at half-time, with Lia Salvo making the most of any space that she was given. However some great team-work from Kayley Smith and Hazel Jackson-Gaona put MT Vikings back into this game in the third, while Milly Hine worked hard to ensure that Park Place retained their lead.

With the score reading 3 – 2½ to Park Place at the start of the fourth chukka there was still all to play for. Hazel converted a penalty to put MT Vikings into the lead and team-mate Emma Boers, who had a really strong game and was later named the Most Valuable Player, followed up with a fabulous goal to give MT Vikings some air on the scoreboard for the first time. Lia converted a penalty in the final moments of this match for Park Place but with the clock ticking down there were not enough minutes remaining to force this game into extra time.

Siri received the trophy from Sarah Burns MBE, Chairman of Smart Works Reading. Every player also received some gorgeous prizes, generously donated by Clé de Peau Beauté. It was announced during the presentations that Clé de Peau Beauté will be the new sponsor of the ladies’ 18-goal tournament at Guards Polo Club from 2021 and offered prizes this year to highlight this exciting new partnership. Clé de Peau Beauté is Japan’s number one luxury skincare and beauty brand whose philosophy is to unlock the power of a woman’s radiance by innovative skincare technology and harnessing makeup from around the world. Clé de Peau Beauté is the perfect partner for Guards Polo Club’s ladies’ polo and is available exclusively in Harrods.

Earlier in the day Mindi Byrne’s Tex8n Ladies claimed the subsidiary final, which was played at Coworth Park. They beat Celina Lawrence’s Tarantula 5-4.  However, win or lose, every player in this match also headed home with fabulous Clé de Peau Beauté gifts.

MT Vikings: Siri Bazzoni (2); Kayley Smith (2); Emma Boers (5); Hazel Jackson-Gaona (9). Park Place: Varvara Borodina (1); Catalina Lavinia (3); Milly Hine (6); Lia Salvo (8).

Tex8n Ladies: Mindi Byrne (2); Beanie Bradley (3); Emma Wood (6); Tamara Fox (7). Tarantula: Holly Gadsby (1); Alice Servaes (5); Heloise Wilson Smith (6); Rosie Ross (6).

Les Lions/Great Oaks this afternoon received one of the sport’s most important trophies, the Cartier Queen’s Cup. They beat Park Place on The Queen’s Ground at Guards Polo Club in extra time. This tournament is considered one of the most prestigious and renowned events of the British sporting calendar and this year was celebrating its 60th anniversary. HM The Queen personally gifted the Cup to Guards Polo Club in 1960.

Although today’s final was a little unusual as it was played behind closed doors due to the coronavirus pandemic, Cartier proudly continues to sponsor this high-goal tournament. The Maison has been the honoured sponsor for the past eight years and a supporter of polo worldwide for more than 30 years. In addition, Laurent Feniou, Managing Director of Cartier UK, could not attend as he was self-isolating at home due to a recent overseas trip but sent a message to all the teams taking part today.

Ten world-class teams had entered this year’s tournament and have been playing over the past three weeks in a bid to reach today’s final. This afternoon, in a thrilling and competitive match Dillon Bacon’s Les Lions / Great Oaks defeated Andrey Borodin’s Park Place, adding their name to an illustrious cohort of teams for the first time. Les Lions were ahead in this game at half-time (4-3) but Park Place rallied in the second half to force the game into extra time. The 17-year-old Jeta Castagnola then fired through the winner for Les Lions / Great Oaks.

Dillon Bacon received the prestigious silver cup from Mr Brian Stein, the Chairman of Guards Polo Club.  Dillon was also named the Cartier Most Valuable Player, while the stallion Challo Angelo, played by both Barto and Jeta Castagnola in this match,  received the Cartier Best Playing Pony prize, a Cartier rug. Every member of the winning team received a Cartier Tank watch.

Earlier in the day Mr Stein presented Alessandro Bazzoni of the Monterosso Polo Team with the Cartier Trophy, which had been played for this morning. This was the first time in the history of the tournament that a Cartier Queen’s Cup match has been played between a husband and a wife. Alessandro Bazzoni was competing in this tournament for the fourth time while his wife Siri was making her Cartier Queen’s Cup debut with her MT Vikings team. This was a close game played over six chukkas with Monterosso just stealing a 6-5 win in the final chukka. Alessandro was rewarded with the Cartier Most Valuable Player prize in this Cartier Trophy match.

Lions/Great Oaks: Camilo (Jeta) Castagnola (7); Dillon Bacon (2); Bartolome Castagnola Jnr (8); Santiago Laborde (6). Park Place: Andrey Borodin (0); Will Harper (3); Gonzalo Pieres (9); Facundo Pieres (10). Park Place received 1 goal on handicap.

Monterosso Polo Team: Alessandro Bazzoni (1); Guillermo Terrera (7); Ignacio Toccalino (8); Jeronimo del Carril (6). MT Vikings: Siri Evjemo-Nysveen (0); James Beim (7); Sebastian Merlos (8); Juan Martin Zubia (7).

MT Vikings 9 – 8 Polo Stud Schockemohle
Segavas 11 – 10 Park Place Vaara

Two close games today confirmed who would be playing Monterosso and Next Generation in Thursday’s subsidiary semi-finals. The first match today saw Siri Evjemo-Nysveen not only return to her MT Vikings team but score too. Their opponents this morning were a higher-handicapped Polo Stud Schockemohle team. Looking for their first win in this tournament the German-based team were playing the  four-goaler Charlie Hanbury in place of their patron Ekard Joules. This new strategy appeared to be paying off for them in the early stages of the match. They were 2-1 up after the first chukka and were 4-2 up in the second. Failing to score at all in the third was the turning point in this game though.  MT Vikings may have only added one further goal to their tally at half-time but the dynamics in this match had slightly shifted. MT Vikings levelled the scores to 5-5 in the fourth and not only pulled away in the fifth but managed to maintain that all-important one-goal advantage on the final whistle. This team performance has earned MT Vikings a date with Next Generation on Thursday at midday.

Segavas have secured a subsidiary semi-final game on Thursday against Monterosso after beating Park Place Vaara at Coworth Park this afternoon. In addition to winning this match, this team also won the Gerard Leigh Trophy, presented in memory of a former Chairman of Guards Polo Club, Col William Gerard Leigh. He was Chairman of the Club from 1955 until 1981. The match had looked as if this was going to be Park Place Vaara’s game. They arrived at Coworth Park fresh from a surprising win over Les Lions/Great Oaks last Wednesday and everyone wondered if they had now found their spark. It seemed they had in the first few minutes – leading 4-1 in the early stages of the second chukka. Their game then stalled, while Segavas piled on the goals, taking the lead 6-5 at half-time. Park Place Vaara had not given up quite yet, remaining only a goal behind the leaders for the rest of the match. It was great to see such competitive play from both teams. Segavas will now play Monterosso in the second subsidiary semi final  on Thursday. These two teams have already met in this year’s tournament, Monterosso coming out best last Tuesday. Segavas will be hoping to turn the tables on Alessandro Bazzoni’s team and win a place in Sunday’s subsidiary final, where the winning team heads home with the Cartier Trophy.

The Polo Classic: From 19 May to 14 June 2020 the legendary Queen’s Cup at Guards Polo Club will celebrate its 60th anniversary. Of course, huge festivities are coming up next year. But the 2019 edition was also a breathtaking polo event.

Scone Polo added their name to the Cartier Queen’s Cup at the first time of asking! David Paradice’s team delivered a strong performance on The Queen’s Ground at Guards Polo Club in the second half of this final – playing their crowd-pleasing four-man polo – to win the match and the trophy 9-5. The popular Australian patron not only received the coveted cup from HM The Queen and Laurent Feniou, Managing Director of Cartier UK, but a huge cheer from the crowd too.

Their opponents, Andrey Borodin’s Park Place, were runners-up for the second successive year and, on paper, were favourites to lift the trophy. The game started in Park Place’s favour – they were 2-0 up after the first chukka and although Scone Polo got themselves on even terms in the second (3-3) Park Place seemed to be in the driving seat.

Scone Polo’s story through this year’s competition has been incredible and this final was no exception. Many people had written off this new team after they lost their first two games. Things changed in the third league match of the tournament – they suddenly found a winning way of playing and have not looked back since. Some great teamwork had put this team in the final and it won them the Cup too. Park Place struggled to counteract Scone Polo’s increasing confidence – failing to score at all in the fifth – and all of sudden, with just seven minutes left to play, this was Scone Polo’s game.

Winning player, Englishman James Harper, who had a brilliant game at back for Scone Polo, was named the Cartier Most Valuable Player. He also received the Cartier Best Playing Pony Rug for Twitter – a Jim Gilmore-owned, seven-year-old chestnut mare.

HM The Queen also presented the subsidiary final prize, the Cartier Trophy to Hugues Carmignac, patron of Talandracas, one of 12 teams that had entered this year’s Cartier Queen’s Cup competition. They beat Jean-Francois Decaux’s La Bamba de Areco 11-8 in an earlier match on this day. There was little air between these two teams at half time – 7-6 to Talandracas. Things only changed when La Bamba’s David Stirling retired after the third chukka – he had been injured in the second and although he continued to play until half-time it was clear he was in some pain.

Pablo Pieres subbed for him but a change of personnel always upsets a team’s dynamics and La Bamba failed to score in the next two chukkas. Talandracas, meanwhile, put four more goals on the board. La Bamba got back into the game in the sixth but it was too late and Talandracas won the sub final by three goals. The winning team’s Alejandro Muzzio was later named The Most Valuable Player, receiving his prize from HM The Queen.

Jeremy Pemberton’s Conosco added their name to the Hildon Archie David Cup for the first time on Sunday after a tough test against Charlie Wooldridge’s Twelve Oaks on The Queen’s Ground at Guards Polo Club.

It was The Polo Magazine’s Most Valuable Player Will Emerson, who delivered this victory in the final moments of the match. He produced a huge shot to goal – the commentator referred to it as the best goal of the competition – to ensure Conosco won this four-chukka final 4-3. Will Emerson also received the Best Playing Pony prize from Simon Prosser, Sales and Marketing Director for Hildon, for Lotus, a gelding whom Will had played in the second chukka.

With 28 teams having entered the UK’s leading 8-goal tournament, which has been sponsored by Hildon for the past three years, this final was always going to be close. The first half, played in gloriously hot sunshine, was a wonderful display of flowing polo, with the umpires’ whistles rarely heard. Will Harper did a great job in defence for Conosco and they were 2-0 up at half-time, even though they had failed to convert several great runs down the field into goals. The umpires were kept busier in the second half as tension on the field began to show, but some strong play from Twelve Oaks’ Ed Banner Eve brought Charlie’s team back into contention in the final two chukkas, with the patron himself levelling the score with only a minute left on the clock. However Will’s great goal then settled this game once and for all in favour on Conosco.

Earlier in the day Stefan Sund’s Previse won the subsidiary Caterham Cup. They defeated Matt Green-Armytage’s Saracen’s team 7-5 in another strong game, played on The Duke’s Ground. In a hallmark of this particular tournament, Guards teams that are knocked out at the league stages have a chance to compete for more silverware, the Claude Pert Trophy. This was the first game of the day and was won by Tally Ho Farm. They beat Tchogan/Matrix 5-4 in another close game.

The UAE Polo team added their name to the OUT-SOURCING! Inc. Royal Windsor Cup for the first time at Guards Polo Club. The team patron, HH Sheikha Maitha bint Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, who has been out injured for all of the UK season so far, joined her team to receive the coveted cup from HM The Queen and Haruhiko Doi and David Matsumoto of the sponsors OUT-SOURCING! Inc. Thirteen-year-old Lucas Monteverde Junior was instrumental in the UAE team’s success today, delivering some impressive polo that ensures he will be winning plenty more silverware at this Club in the future. Much to the crowd’s delight, Lucas was rewarded with the Most Valuable Player prize.  UAE’s opponents in this final were Alan Fall’s Mad Dogs, who had knocked out the sponsors’ own OS Challengers team in the semi-finals. Mad Dogs were also looking to add their names to this trophy for the first time and kept themselves in contention until the final chukka, when UAE Polo pulled away to win this five-chukka match 10-7. Mad Dogs’ James Harper, who had received the Best Playing Pony prize in last week’s Cartier Queen’s Cup final, did the double here, stepping forward with his grooms to collect the prizes for the gelding Skiff.

Twenty-one teams had entered this tournament, the UK’s leading 15-goal contest, and so the sub final, for the Mountbatten Cup was equally hard fought. Andras Tombor’s Bardon retained the Cup, defeating Tunde Karim’s Shoreline 8-5 in this morning match. Alexandra Mountbatten was joined by film and TV star Gillian Anderson and the sponsor’s Kazuhiko Suzuki to present the prizes.

This day traditionally concludes with a wonderful carriage driving display by the British Driving Society, with HM The Queen once again presenting all the championship rosettes on The Queen’s Ground. However this year, in recognition of the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the start of polo in the UK, an additional match was scheduled. This featured a visiting Poloafrica team, highlighting the work of this South African charity which uses polo as a tool to help disadvantaged adults and children have better lives. Playing for the Churchill Cup on Guards Polo Club’s number one ground, the visiting team battled for all four chukkas but lost 4-3 to a Spillers Polo150 team, featuring military polo players. Former World Boxing Champion Chris Eubank presented the prizes, including a Most Valuable Player prize to Spillers Polo150’s 2nd Lt Oliver Powell.
