Independence Cup

CARBONDALE, Colo., July 3, 2022—-The season-opening Independence Cup lived up to expectations Sunday at McClure River Ranch.

After three competitive round robin games, Los Amigos (Paul Foster, Marc Ganzi, Gonzalito Pieres, Tomacho Pieres) won the coveted trophy for the first time in team history.

Los Amigos defeated Casablanca (Alejandra Foster, Grant Ganzi, Torito Ruiz, Nic Roldan), 6-2, to clinch the victory on goal differential in the third and final round robin game.

In earlier games, Los Amigos rallied to tie NetJets (Melissa Ganzi, Nacho Figueras, Alejandro Novillo Astrada, Juan Bollini), 5-5, in the opening three chukkers. NetJets defeated Casablanca, 6-3, in the second game.

Marc Ganzi, who scored four goals in three chukkers including two full field runs and two in the final chukker, was named Most Valuable Player.

„The match that was really interesting was the first one for us,“ Foster said. „We were down three goals (5-2) and we ended up coming back and we tied it. That was the one that was really tough. If we hadn‘t done that we wouldn‘t have been able to win.“

In the third and decisive game, Los Amigos jumped out to a 2-0 lead with back-to-back goals from Foster in the opening chukker and never trailed. With great passing team work from Gonzalito and Tomacho Pieres, Foster and Ganzi took turns scoring in the second and third chukkers for 2-1 leads in each chukker.

Foster, who has been tuning up in practice games during the spring in El Paso, Tex., has played with all three of his teammates in past summer tournaments.

„I think we all felt pretty good,“ Foster said. „We played a little bit this spring trying to get ready so I think we are probably a little more ready than we usually are. It was fun. My wife was on the other side so I couldn‘t celebrate too much. We always have good-natured fun with each other out there.

„I have played with both Gonzalito and Tomacho before and they are both amazing,“ Foster said. „They played well as expected. The one that I think really excelled today was Marc. I think it‘s the best I have ever seen him play. I was actually hitting shots which is a little unusual for me. The four of us were just able to put it together today.“

In the opening game, NetJets led 3-1 after the first chukker and 5-2 with 1:18 left in the second chukker. Los Amigos rallied and outscored NetJets, 4-2, scoring three consecutive goals in the final two chukkers to finish in a 5-5 tie.

In the second game, NetJets dominated Casablanca, 6-3, behind three goals by Melissa Ganzi. With 3:28 left in the second chukker, Astrada connected with Ganzi on a 140-yard pass for Ganzi‘s second goal of the chukker. Two minutes later, Ganzi passed to Bollini who scored from 90 yards out to take a 4-1 lead.

Figueras escaped serious injury in the third chukker when he slipped off his horse while reaching out of his saddle to hook Grant Ganzi.

With the majestic 12,965-foot summit of Mount Sopris as a backdrop under a bright summer sky, polo returned to the valley for its ninth season with the first of a record thirteen tournaments.

„It looks like it‘s going to be a great summer,“ Foster said. „We have a full compliment of pros and players. It‘s nice to get started with a win at the beginning of July.“

Other summer tournaments are this week‘s ChukkerTV Cup, Craig Sakin Memorial, Basalt Handicap, Emma Challenge Cup, High Alpine Cup, Mount Sopris Cup, Rocky Mountain Open, Carbondale Classic, Triple Crown of Polo-Aspen, Silver Queen Invitational, Maroon Bells Cup and Ute Challenge.

Carbondale, CO, July 5, 2021— La Karina defeated Casablanca and McClure River Ranch in round robin play to take the Independence Cup title. Santa Rita beat Rancho Los Amigos by 11-9 in the Just for the Love of It Cup.

In the Independence Cup round robin, McClure River Ranch (Lauren Sherry, Alex Gooding, Nacho Figueras, and Nacho Novillo Astrada) took on La Karina (Sugar Erskine, Brian Boyd, Marc Ganzi, and Nic Roldan). La Karina dominated the first chukker, with Nic Roldan scoring the first goal with a neat near side shot. With 3:34 on the clock, Ganzi found the posts and Sugar Erskine followed up two minutes later with a goal of his own. With the clock running down and La Karina up 3-0, Nacho Figueras took command of the ball and made a bold run to goal to end the period 3-1.

Scoring went back and forth in the second chukker. Figueras scored two goals for his team while Ganzi and Roldan each put the ball through for La Karina to end the period 5-3. Roldan and Ganzi kept up the pressure in the final chukker, with each scoring again before Figueras could fight back with a goal. A final successful shot from Brian Boyd ended the first match 8-4 in favor of La Karina, giving the team in green a +4 for the first match and McClure River Ranch a -4.

McClure River Ranch stayed on the field for the second match against Casablanca (Govinda Quish, Grant Ganzi, Toro Ruiz, and Pablo Spinacci). Govinda Quish struck first, scoring a goal for Casablanca, with Ganzi and Spinacci following up to take the score to 3-0. Lauren Sherry got out in front to find the uprights for McClure River Ranch and the chukker ended with Casablanca up 3-1. The second period saw more back- and-forth play, with each team doing a good job on defense. Alex Gooding found the goal, with Toro Ruiz following up to end the chukker 4-2.

In the final period McClure River Ranch couldn’t get on the board while Ganzi converted a Penalty 2. Casablanca took the match by a score of 5-2, giving them +3 in the round robin. The loss took McClure River Ranch to -7.

In the final leg of the round robin, La Karina returned to the field to take on Casablanca in what promised to be an exciting game. La Karina dominated the first chukker, with consecutive goals from Marc Ganzi and Boyd before Grant Ganzi came back with an answer. Pablo Spinacci scored the first goal of the second period for Casablanca, but Marc Ganzi came back with a goal to keep La Karina in the lead 3-2. The final chukker saw a battle of attrition with both teams playing hard but unable to score. A foul allowed Toro Ruiz to convert a Penalty 4, ending the match in a 3-3 tie. Each team scored a 0 for the round robin. La Karina, with a total score of +4 overall, was victorious for the day. Nic Roldan took MVP honors.

Alejandra Foster drew first blood for Santa Rita, but goals from Vinny Sangaline and Paul Foster put Rancho Los Amigos ahead 2-1 at the end of the first chukker. The lead was not to last as Santa Rita came out with guns blazing in the second period and the ladies dominating the goal. Alejandra Foster put the first ball through the posts, then Melissa Ganzi contributed a pair of back-to-back goals to put Santa Rita in the lead. Foster got out in front for another successful shot, taking the score up to 5-2. At the last moment, just before the 30-second horn, Horacio Heguy passed the ball to Paul Foster in front of the goal, and he tapped it in to end the period with a goal for Rancho Los Amigos. Alejandra Foster repeated what was becoming a habit, scoring the first goal in Chukker 3. Husband Paul retaliated by finding the uprights, putting Rancho Los Amigos within two goals at 6-4. Right before the horn, Ganzi scored to end the half with Santa Rita in the lead 7-4.

Horacio Heguy leads the play.

Ganzi took over from Alejandra Foster to score the first goal of the fourth chukker, sinking a challenging angled shot from the right. At the halfway point in the period, Tomas Pieres scored his first goal of the match. Play went back and forth for the next three minutes, and the chukker ended 8-5. Ganzi started the pentultimate chukker with another set of back-to-back goals, and play continued with both teams playing a strong defense. Neither was able to score until Pieres passed the ball to Foster, who tapped it in as the horn sounded.

With the score standing at 10-6 in favor of Santa Rita, Rancho Los Amigos went into the final chukker facing an uphill battle. However, they put up an impressive fight. Pieres scored the first goal of the period, then Ganzi retaliated by putting the ball through around half-chukker. Vinny Sangaline made a run downfield to score, and while the game was clearly lost, Horacio Heguy made a bold effort and found the goal at the horn. Santa Rita defeated Rancho Los Amigos by 11-9. Aspen Valley Polo Club kicked off the summer season with three hard-fought matches as part of the Independence Cup.

Despite the lack of spectators due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there was no shortage of excitement at McClure River Ranch on Sunday with three matches, the Red, White and Blue, played as part of the Independence Cup.

The first match of the day, the Blue, saw Seminole Casino (Melissa Ganzi, 0, Alejandra Foster, 0, Alejandro Novillo Astrada, 8, and Juan Bollini, 5) best Los Amigos (Paul Foster, 0, Vinny Sangaline, 0, Horacio Heguy, 6, and Juan Martin Nero, 10) with a score of 13 to 10.

The ladies made a spectacular showing, with Alejandra Foster scoring the first goal of the match and ending the play with a total of seven goals. Melissa Ganzi and daughter Riley, splitting chukkers, scored two and four goals respectively. Vinny Sangaline scored nine of Los Amigos’ ten goals.

On Field One, the White match pitted Richard Mille (Marc Ganzi, 2, Grant Ganzi, 3, Pablo MacDonough, 10, Juancito Bollini, 4) against Michael Bickford’s La Indiana (Michael Bickford, 2, Stewart Armstrong, 3, Polito Pieres, 10, and Nacho Badiola 5), with Richard Mille winning 11 to 8.

Richard Mille’s Juancito Bollini was hot out of the gate, scoring his first of five goals early in the first chukker. He repeated that play later, scoring just moments into the fourth period. The team also benefited from great teamwork by Marc and Grant Ganzi, and four goals from superstar Pablo MacDonough.

In the final Red match, Spindrift (Gussie Busch, 2, John Bickford, 1, Nic Roldan, 8, and Tincho Merlos, 8) bested Brian Boyd’s La Karina (Brian Boyd, 0.5, Alex Gooding, 2, Pablo Spinacci, 6, Nacho Novillo Astrada, 8) by 8 to 5. Team sponsor Brian Boyd suffered a minor accident in the second chukker and as a precaution, he was taken to Aspen Valley Hospital. Boyd is okay and will return to play soon. Harrison Azzaro, 1.5, took over the number one position. Azzaro showed his mettle in the fourth chukker, scoring a goal with an impressive 120-yard shot.

Sofia, owned and ridden by Pablo MacDonough in the fifth chukker of the White match, was awarded Best Playing Pony.

While admission is traditionally open and free to the public, the COVID-19 pandemic has forced the club to close to spectators for the foreseeable future. Aspen Valley Polo Club has taken this step out of an abundance of caution.

Players and staff have been tested in 3 rounds at sister club Grand Champions Polo in Florida since March and will continue to be tested throughout the 2020 summer season.

Aspen Valley Polo Club has also implemented testing for the Carbondale Fire Department, which stations an ambulance field side during all tournaments.

We are closely following the guidelines established by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The CDC strongly recommends that individuals protect themselves and their communities by minimizing the time spent with others in large groups, and by avoiding close contact with other individuals, especially those who are sick.

The CDC also recommends that you:

• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after being in a public place, blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If you cannot wash your hands, use hand sanitizer.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

• Stay home if you are unwell, except to seek medical assistance.

* Always wear a face mask in public areas.

Although Aspen Valley will be closed to spectators, ChukkerTV will livestream the entire 2020 polo series so fans can still enjoy the best polo of the US summer season. ChukkerTV was the first to introduce state-of-the-art live streaming technology and instant replay in January 2014 at Grand Champions Polo Club in Wellington, Florida.
