CARBONDALE, CO, July 26, 2020 — Tonkawa defeated La Karina by a score of 13-10 to capture the Basalt Handicap title. In the Just For The Fun Of It subsidiary, Aspen Valley Polo Club defeated McClure River Ranch in overtime by 6-5.

Tonkawa (Jeff Hildebrand, Jimmy Seward, Toro Ruiz, and Grant Ganzi) and La Karina (Brian Boyd, Gussie Busch, Nic Roldan, and Marc Ganzi) took to the field in Sunday’s final match of the Basalt Handicap.

Team sponsors Brian Boyd and Jeff Hildebrand go neck and neck down the field.

La Karina dominated play in the first chukker, with Nic Roldan taking possession from the bowl-in. He slammed the ball downfield to Brian Boyd, who sent it on to Marc Ganzi to put the first goal on the board at 5:33. Roldan came out of the next bowl-in with control of the ball again, sending a long shot for Brian Boyd to pick up and put through the posts despite Jeff Hildebrand’s best efforts to ride him off the line. As the clock ticked under four minutes, Tonkawa had yet to take control of the ball for an offensive play, and Gussie Busch took his turn at the goal after working the ball downfield. With just a minute left on the clock, Roldan fired off another long shot to Marc Ganzi, who picked up the pass and carried the ball through the uprights. The chukker ended 4-0 in favor of La Karina.

At the beginning of the second chukker, it was clear that Tonkawa needed to start winning throw-ins. Although Marc Ganzi scored the first goal in the second chukker, taking La Karina up to 5, Tonkawa began to gain some ground. At 2:48, Toro Ruiz scored his team’s first goal on a Penalty 6, and a minute later he put another on the board. With 46 seconds left on the clock, Grant Ganzi made a spectacular shot to cut La Karina’s advantage to 2 goals. The period ended 5-3. Tonkawa put the first goal on the board in Chukker 3, but a goal from Busch and a Penalty 2 conversion by Marc Ganzi saw La Karina hang on to the advantage and end the half leading by 7-4.

La Karina gave away much of their advantage through fouls in the fourth chukker, with Marc Ganzi, Jeff Hildebrand, and Toro Ruiz all scoring on penalties. Marc Ganzi also scored on a penalty, while Gussie Busch put the ball through from the field with 1:28 left on the clock. The players returned to the center for the throw-in and Ruiz jumped on the ball, moving it downfield and slamming a long shot to goal to end the period closing in on La Karina at 9-8. In the fifth period, Ruiz tied the score at 9-9 but a Penalty 3 conversion by Marc Ganzi put La Karina back in the lead. Ruiz scored another goal from the field and the period ended 10-all.

WELLINGTON, FL, March 30, 2021— Parrotheads defeated Beverly Equestrian to capture $50,000 National 12-Goal final.

Beverly Equestrian (Bill Ballhaus, Keko Magrini, Tolito Ocampo, and Hilario Figueras) met Parrotheads (Nachi Viana, Roni Duke, Jason Wates, and Felipe Viana on Sunday morning in the final match of the $50,000 National 12-Goal.

While Parrotheads put the pressure on early and made several unsuccessful shots on goal in the first two and a half minutes, Hilario Figueras got Beverly Equestrian off to a promising start by scoring the first goal of the match at 4:30. However, the promise was short-lived. Nachi Viana went to the penalty line twice in the first chukker, converting a Penalty 2 and a Penalty 3 to end the chukker 2 to 1.

Nachi scored two goals from the field in the second period, while brother Felipe converted a Penalty 3. Despite their best efforts, Beverly couldn’t make it through the Parrotheads defense and put no goals on the board. The period ended with Parrotheads leading 5-1. The third chukker saw just under two minutes of back and forth with Parrotheads pressing hard before Nachi Viana stole the ball and took it through the posts. Felipe followed up with some thieving of his own and put the ball in from the near side. Beverly found themselves down by 7-1. While they weren’t able to score from the field, a pair of Penalty Twos cut Parrotheads’ lead to 4.

The second half began with Parrotheads leading 7-3, and Beverly suffered through another frustrating chukker. Jason Wates scored from the field while Nachi Viana converted a Penalty 2, but Beverly had no luck getting near the uprights. In the fifth chukker a Penalty 2 took Parrot Heads up to 10, with Beverly lagging behind by seven goals. Tolito Ocampo made a successful shot on goal, breathing some life back into Beverly, but Nachi Viana converted a Penalty 2 to end the chukker 10-4.

Nachi began the final chukker with another goal, his eighth for the day, and was answered by Tolito Ocampo. Following a technical foul, Beverly was awarded a goal, and Hilario Figueras convered a Penalty 3 and a Penalty 2. Jason Wates knocked in the final goal just as the thirty second horn sounded, and Parrot Heads defeated Beverly Equestrian by a score of 12-8.

Nachi Viana was named Most Valuable Player, while Roni Duke’s pony Tap Dancer was awarded the prize for Best Playing Pony.

In thrilling fashion, new team sponsor WPL won its first league tournament of the winter polo season Monday at Grand Champions Polo Club. With the score tied 11-11, Juan Bollini scored the winning goal with seven minutes left in overtime to enable WPL (Santos Bollini, 1, Nico Harriott, 1, Gussie Busch, 1, Juan Bollini, 5) to knock off Dutta Corp (Juanse Olivera, 1, Timmy Dutta, 2, Tolito Ocampo, 5, Tim Dutta, 0) for a thrilling 12-11 victory. After two missed scoring opportunities by both teams, Bollini picked up the loose ball on a broken play and scored.

“I saw the ball and I had to take a chance,” Bollini said. “It was the last chance I had to prove myself. I was upset with myself. I was not happy with the way I was playing.” Gussie Busch, 23, was Most Valuable Player after scoring a game-high eight goals, including seven penalty conversions. It was his first tournament victory this season at Grand Champions.

Busch, the son of polo player Billy Busch, 1991 U.S. Open winner with Grant’s Farm Manor teammates Andy Busch, Mike Azzaro and Carlos Gracida, has filled in for starter Melissa Ganzi of Flexjet during the 26-goal season in the World Polo League lineup, and played well. “It’s been fun playing all over since I have been down here,” Busch said. “I enjoy playing for Melissa. One day it’s fast as hell and the other day it’s a little slower and more controlled with the ball. But it’s a lot of fun.” Busch said the team was put together for the winter season 6-, 8- and 12-goal leagues. It was his final league tournament of the winter season. He will continue to serve as Ganzi’s backup, if needed, for the last two weeks of the World Polo League’s Triple Crown of Polo. “We just meshed and been going at it ever since,” Busch said of his WPL teammates. “It’s been fun.”

In a hotly-contested, penalty-marred game that had more chatter than a morning talk show, the lead changed hands 14 times before going into overtime. Both teams led during the game and both teams had opportunities to win in regulation time at the penalty line and from the field. “The game was a little sticky with all the fouls in the beginning,” said Busch, who has been playing competitively since he was 12. “We finally opened it up and thank God in overtime we pulled it out and got the win.”

Bollini, who turns 57 in June, was the oldest player in the championship  final. It was another satisfying milestone, playing above his rating and playing alongside his 19-year-old son Santos. Juan Bollini finished with three goals and Santos Bollini added one. “My teammates were incredible,” Bollini said. “Gussie, Nico and Santos played well. They fought until the end. I think I finally showed up at the end in the last minute. I am very happy and so happy to win a tournament with Santos.

During the winter polo season, Grand Champions, the nation’s largest and most innovative USPA-sanctioned polo club, is hosting 24 tournaments: 6, 8, 12, 20, and 0 to 40 goals, Sunny Hale’s Legacy WCT Finals, women’s weekly league play and 26-goal World Polo League tournaments at Grand Champions, Valiente Polo Farm and Jan Pamela Field.

In one of polo’s biggest upsets, Grand Champions knocked off Valiente, 12-11, in overtime to win the World Polo League Founders Cup Sunday at Valiente Polo Farm. – By Sharon Robb

In front of an overflow crowd, Argentine 10-goaler Juan Martin Nero scored the winning goal in the first two minutes of overtime to upset previously unbeaten Valiente (Bob Jornayvaz, 2, Agustin Nero, 6, Santi Torres, 6, Adolfo Cambiaso, 10).Playing together for the first time in the WPL’s second tournament of the season, Grand Champions finished the eight-team, 26-goal tournament undefeated at 4-0. Nero and teammates Rodrigo Andrade, 9, Grant Ganzi, 3, and Juancito Bollini, 4, earned $60,000 in prize money.

“I don’t know what happened, they say that we won,” joked Nero, named the Tournament Most Valuable Player. Nero also earned the Catena Watch Play of the Day for his game-winner. Andrade was selected Tato’s Game MVP. “I saw Grant was with Adolfito, I was open and went for it. I said to myself ‘I can’t miss this goal.’ I was completely alone. I was lucky to get it. This is huge for us. This is the first tournament we played together and we won. The game was really, good, it was open. We had a lot of fun.”

The stunning victory marked a successful 26-goal final debut of longtime friends and teammates Grant Ganzi, 20, and Juancito Bollini, 22. “I am at a loss for words, I can’t describe it, this is insane,” Ganzi said. “This is a huge upset. The last time Adolfo lost at this level other than last year’s U.S. Open final was a long time ago. It’s tough to beat these guys. Congrats to them, they have been playing unbelievable polo.
