Rio Grande Park

ASPEN, Colorado, December 17, 2023: Casablanca won its first St. Regis World Snow Polo Championship 2023 at Rio Grande Park.

In front of a soldout crowd. Casablanca (Grant Ganzi, 3, Hilario Figueras, 5, Nic Roldan, 9) held off Aspen Valley (Jason Crowder, 6, Marc Ganzi, 1, Adolfo Cambiaso, 10) for a hardfought 8-6 victory.

Nine-goaler Nic Roldan scored a game-high five goals including his first two-pointer in the three-day tournament and was named Most Valuable Player. It was Roldan‘s fifth St. Regis tournament victory in eleven years.

„Any win is a good win and this was a good win,“ Roldan said. „This is one of our favorite events of the year. Grant and Hilario played amazing and are two really competitive players. Kudos to them for stepping up and giving their all.“

Argentine 10-goaler Adolfo Cambiaso, the sport‘s greatest all-time player, made his U.S. debut on snow. Unlike his 10-goal performance including three two-pointers, in Friday‘s indoor arena qualifier, Casablanca held him scoreless and shut down Aspen Valley‘s offensive attack that had scored 23 goals in four chukkers.

„Adolfo is the greatest of all time by far,“ Roldan said. „He keeps impressing us and blowing our minds with what he‘s doing. We didn‘t really think about playing against him. It was a very tough game and very competitive. It could have gone either way.“

It was Ganzi‘s fourth St. Regis title. Last year the Casablanca Ambassador teamed with Hilario Figueras and Tommy Biddle for Blade & Bow‘s first tournament victory.

„I think this was a bigger win,“ Ganzi said. „Having Adolfo‘s debut and making the final and being able to beat him is huge. Having a fun team to play with against a very good team, this was definitely a bigger win.

„It was a fun final,“ Ganzi said. „Shutting out Cambiaso was rare. I don‘t think he knew what to expect playing on snow. It was very different for him. If we could keep the ball away from Adolfo we knew that would benefit us greatly.

„A hundred percent having him here was huge and added to the tournament,“ Ganzi said. „Obviously, he is the best player ever. His accomplishments speak for themself. We were fortunate to get him to come this year and add another amazing player to a great list of 10-goalers. It seemed like he enjoyed it and adapted very quickly.“

In a hotly-contested game, Casablanca jumped out to a 2-0 lead behind goals by Roldan and Figueras. Roldan‘s two-pointer and another Figueras goal gave them a 5-2 advantage after two chukkers.

„Two-pointers are always tough,“ Roldan said. „I think there‘s a little bit of luck involved. You just have to try to hit it as softly as possible and hope that it just stays on line and it did.“

Aspen Valley clawed its way back in the third chukker for a 3-0 shutout to tie the game at 5-5. Going into the fourth and final chukker, the lead changed hands twice  before Casablanca went ahead on Roldan‘s 15-yard penalty conversion to break a 6-6 tie with two minutes left. Figueras added an insurance goal for an 8-6 final.

„We got off to a quick start and then they started to work their way back in,“ Roldan said. „In the end the idea was to be patient and not give away any fouls. It worked out well.“

In addition to Roldan‘s five goals, Figueras had three. Crowder led Aspen Valley with three goals, Ganzi had one and they were awarded two penalty-ones.

Added Ganzi, „We wanted to defend them well and play pretty simple. We wanted to do the same things we did the other day defensively. Most of our tactics were defensive. In the end, playing pretty open polo and working a little harder for each other I think made the difference. We played a hard, smart game.“

Casablanca, the tournament‘s apparel sponsor, produces the world’s leading equipment for polo players with the highest safety ratings and supplies supreme quality clothing.

„It‘s great for Casablanca,“ Ganzi said. „I am happy for the brand and happy to get their name on the trophy. It‘s cool to be able to lead the team and do it. I think they should be happy.“

There were three Best Playing Pony blankets awarded. The BPP for the final was Nadia, a chestnut mare played and bred by Cambiaso and owned by Santa Rita Polo Farm. The tournament BPP was Nobu, played by Roldan, bred and owned by Santa Rita Polo Farm. The American Polo Horse Association BPP was Highlands, played by Hilario Figueras, also bred and owned by Santa Rita Polo Farm.

In the Aspen Cup, St. Regis (Santos Bollini, 2, Juan Bollini, 6, Nacho Figueras, 6) defeated NetJets (Ricky Cooper, 3, Pete Webb, 6, Sugar Erskine, 7), 11-6, for third place. Figueras, St. Regis Connoisseur and team captain, scored a game-high 10 goals and was named MVP.

On Saturday, Edmiston (Teo Calle, 1, Pancho Bensadon, 8, Alejandro Novillo Astrada, 7), rallied for a 5-4 victory over Blade & Bow (Scott Wood, 2, Juan Martin Nero, 10, Pablo Spinacci, 6) to win the High Alpine Cup and finished fifth. Argentine Alejandro Novillo Astrada was MVP. He scored the only two-pointer of the game.

The inaugural Potamkin Charity Chukker was held in honor of beloved Aspen resident Robert Potamkin, the father of Melissa Ganzi, who passed away recently. Each goal scored in the chukker earned a donation to charity.

Potamkin Black (Grant Ganzi, Alejandro Novillo Astrada, Juan Bollini), earned $9,000 for the Calloway Young Cancer Center, winning 9-7 over Potamkin Yellow (Michael Calle, Sugar Erskine, Pancho Bensadon), earning $7,000 for the Aspen Valley Hospital Foundation. Astrada led with a game-high five goals, Ganzi had three goals and Bollini added one.

In the Celebrity Polo Match, Sterling (Vinny Sangaline, Michael Sangaline, Aurora Figueras) defeated Lugano (Federico Farina, Sterling Jones, Michael Calle), 5-2. Vinny Sangaline and Figueras each had two goals for Sterling.

One of the world‘s top snow polo tournaments and only snow polo tournament held in North America, was the final stop of the World Polo Tour. It‘s also one of Aspen‘s major international sporting events, attracting fans from all over the world.

For the eleventh consecutive year, Aspen Valley Polo Club owners Melissa and Marc Ganzi hosted the world-class event in a holiday setting against a backdrop of snow-covered mountains, kicking off the holiday social season in Aspen.

„Every year it seems to get better and better,“ Roldan praised. „Melissa and her team have done an incredible job of putting this event together. We‘re all hugely appreciative and very grateful to be able to experience this. It‘s an awesome experience and great way to end the year. The win is just a bonus.“

In last year‘s thrilling finish, Blade & Bow won its first St. Regis World Snow Polo Championship. Blade & Bow (Grant Ganzi, 3, Hilario Figueras, 6, Tommy Biddle, 9) rallied from a four-goal deficit to defeat St. Regis (Melissa Ganzi, 0, Nacho Figueras, 6, Alejandro Novillo Astrada, 7), 9-8.

With the majestic 12,965-foot summit of Mount Sopris as a backdrop, Aspen Valley Polo Club has become the world‘s destination spot for summer and snow polo.

ASPEN, CO, December 22, 2020— World Polo League bested Royal Salute in overtime to win the World Snow Polo Championship title by a score of 11-10

In what was perhaps the most exciting final in the history of the Aspen World Snow Polo Championship, World Polo League (Riley Ganzi, Hilario Figueras, and Alejandro Novillo Astrada) edged out Royal Salute (Sarah Siegel Magness, Jason Crowder and Jesse Bray) in an overtime shoot-out.

Chukker One got off to a blazing start with Jason Crowder scoring for Royal Salute out of the throw-in. With 3:35 to go, Hilario Figueras passed the ball to Alejandro Novillo Astrada to put the first goal on the board for WPL. Jason Crowder fouled Figueras in front ot the goal, resulting in a penalty one automatic goal for WPL, putting the score at 2-1 for WPL. As compensation for the foul, he scored on a pass from Jesse Bray, evening things up to end the chukker 2-2.

Chukker Two was off to another fast start, with two goals in the first 40 seconds, an impressive neck shot from Sarah Siegel Magness and a goal from Riley Ganzi, to tie the score at 3-3. With 1:49 left to play in the first half, Royal Salute found the goal to bring the score up to 3-4, while a penalty one by WPL took the score to 3-5. At the 30 second buzzer, Figueras scored, followed by a successful penalty two shot by Ganzi. With one second remaining and the score at 5-5, Crowder snuck in a final goal to end the half at 5-6 for Royal Salute.

Chukker three started with an unsuccessful penalty shot for WPL’s Ganzi, and with 3:11 to go in the chukker Crowder found the goal again, bringing the score to 5-7. WPL got lucky with another penalty one automatic goal. At 2:27, Hilario Figueras tied the match up at 7-7. He followed that goal up with a breakaway run, with Ganzi finishing to put WPL ahead by 8-7. With the clock ticking down, Jesse Bray made good use of the wall and scored to end the chukker at 8-all.

Chukker Three got off to a slower start, with both teams going back and forth. At 2:10, Jesse Bray edged the ball in from the right to bring the score to 9-8. With a minute of play remaining, Alejandro Novillo Astrada scored, tying the match up at 9 all. The chukker ended at 9 all, taking the match into overtime with a shoot out. Riley Ganzi took the first shot for WPL, taking the score to 10-9. Next up, Sarah Siegel Magness kept her cool under pressure, tying it up again at 10-10. Figueras took WPL to 11-10. Jesse Bray’s shot went just wide, as did WPL’s Novillo Astrada’s. Royal Salute’s Crowder missed his shot, and WPL won by 11-10.

The day’s second match for the runner-up title, the Aspen Cupt, pitted Casablanca (Grant Ganzi, Juancito Bollini, and Toro Ruiz) against St Regis (Tom Barrack, Sugar Erskine, and Nacho FIgueras).

Toro Ruiz scored the first goal for Casablanca, and Juancito Bollini found the posts 30 seconds later to put another goal on the board. With 2:29 to go, Ruiz found the pass from Juancito Bollini and tapped the ball in. At 1:20, Grant Ganzi successfully evaded Tom Barrack to score, putting Casablanca up 4-0. With 58 seconds remaining, Figueras scored to end the chukker at 4-1. In Chukker Two, Figueras took a successful long shot to goal bringing the score to 4-2. The remaining four and a half minutes of play went back and forth, with neither team managing to score again.

Chukker Three began with Ruiz successfully converting on a pass from Ganzi, bringing the score to 5-2. At the four-minute mark, Figueras scored for St. Regis, with Sugar Erskine following up 30 second later, bringing St. Regis in striking distance at 5-4. With 33 seconds left to play, Ruiz scored again to end the chukker 6-4. In the final chukker, Toro Ruiz made a spectacular steal from Nacho Figueras and brought the score up to 7-4. President & CEO Deborah Breen was on hand to personally accept a $15,000 check for the AVHP and a $15,000 donation from Marc and Melissa Ganzi for the Calaway Young Cancer Center.

On Saturday, the Aspen World Snow Polo Championship kicked off with the High Alpine Cup. White Claw (Vinny Sangaline, Pablo Spinacci, and Horacio Heguy) took to the snow in Rio Grande Park to challenge Richard Mille (Alex Potamkin, Juan Bollini, and Nic Roldan).

Chukker One began with a bold run at goal by Vinny Sangaline, but Nic Roldan thwarted his attempt to score. The teams battled back and forth for over three minutes before Pablo Spinacci scored the first goal of the match at 2:16. Just before the whistle, Nic Roldan took the ball along the wall to end the chukker tied at 1-1. In the second chukker, play was back and forth until Sangaline brought the score up to 2-1 with 22 seconds left to play.

Richard Mille found their rhythm in the second half of the match. At 2:22, Alex Potamkin found the sweet spot after a scuffle in from of the goal, tying the game at 2-2.  A minute later Roldan scored to put his team ahead 3-2. In the final chukker, Bollini scored despite being fouled by an attempt to steal the ball from behind. Nic Roldan made an impressive trip downfield keeping the ball in the air, but his final shot went just left of the goal. Spinacci got out in front to bring the score up to 3-4, but at 2:48 Roldan made a long shot to goal. Alex Potamkin scored the final goal of the match, with Richard Mille winning by 6-3.

Following the Alpine Cup, ChukkerTV announced Dale Schwetz presided over an auction to benefit the Aspen Vally Hospital Foundation. Gucci generously donated the auction items.

Next up, the Celebrity Chukker featured ChukkerTV (Gussie Busch, Juan Bollini, and Jacob Busch) against Aspen Valley Polo Club (Sterling Jones, Miss Saye Yabandeh, and Horacio Heguy).

Aspen Valley’s Sterling Jones scored the first goal, walking the ball in along the wall. Saye Yanbandeh made an impressive steal, snagging the ball from Juan Bollini, but lost control. Jacob Busch picked up the ball to score, tying things up at 1-1. With 1:41 to go, Saye found the goal, bringing the socre to 2-1. Fans will get the opportunity to meet some of the world‘s best polo players and enjoy music mixed especially for the W Aspen Hotel. General admission tickets are $200. VIP tickets are $1,000 and include perks such as Beverly Hills Caviar, bottomless champagne and other exclusive benefits. Also for sale are tickets to join British 6-goal player Malcolm Borwick for a one-hour polo lesson on polo horses on Dec. 20th at 9 a.m. at Rio Grande Park. The experience is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and limited to 10 people at $750 per ticket. To purchase tickets or browse the online auction items, go to bidpal.net/snowpolo.

Borwick is the Royal Salute World Polo Ambassador. Recently, Pernod Ricard announced a „standout new addition“ Royal Salute Snow Polo Edition, available for a limited time throughout December. „The Snow Polo Edition is a standout new addition with an extensive depth of flavour and fresh new look,“ said Royal Salute Master Blender Sandy Hyslop, who developed the limited-edition blend. „Being at the helm of the blending team behind Royal Salute, I‘m always looking for new inspiration, and snow polo has proven to be one of the richest sources yet for creativity and innovation. To capture the apposition of the intensity of the game against the graceful elegance of the backdrop associated with snow polo, it felt like the perfect opportunity to craft the very first blended grain whisky in our portfolio and I couldn‘t be prouder of the result.“ Added Borwick, „Snow polo is a spectator sport like no other with each match delivering an undeniably thrilling atmosphere, set in the breath-taking scenery of immaculate snow-peaked mountains. Royal Salute understands polo and the lifestyle it represents both on and off the field so well, it‘s an honour to be able to help open up the world of polo through the Royal Salute Polo Collection and the global partnerships it has formed over the last ten years.“

All proceeds from the party and auction benefit the Aspen Valley Hospital Foundation.
