Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club

The highly anticipated 2018 Sentebale ISPS Handa Polo Cup at the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club on July 26 featured an exhilarating match between the teams Sentebale St. Regis and Royal Salute. Team Sentebale St. Regis with HRH, The Duke of Sussex, Nacho Figueras, Ashley Van Metre Bush and Miguel Mendoza clinched victory with a 5,5 to 4 score against Royal Salute with Riley Ganzi, Chet Lott, the English pro and team captain Malcolm Borwick and Saad Audeh. POLO+10 was delighted to attend this great event personally.

The annual invitation-only fundraising event, which started with a luncheon followed by the polo match, raised money for Sentebale, the charity founded by The Duke of Sussex and Prince Seeiso, which supports vulnerable children and young people affected by HIV in Lesotho and Botswana in southern Africa.

St. Regis, partners of Sentebale for nine years, has long been associated with the world of polo, beginning at the turn of the last century when St. Regis’ founding family, the Astor’s, were a prominent fixture at the matches on Manhattan’s Governors Island.  That association continues today, expanding around the world alongside the brand’s growth, and the past few years have seen St. Regis hosting spirited polo matches in Aspen, the United Kingdom, India, Thailand, Singapore, Dubai and South America, among other global destinations.

The Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA) and the United States Polo Association (USPA) are pleased to announce the challenge of the historical Westchester Cup on Saturday, July 28, 2018, at the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club in Windsor, Berkshire, England. The Westchester Cup was first played in 1886 and has been played 17 times throughout its history, only four of which have taken place since World War II. The cup, created by Tiffany & Co., is currently held by England, who defeated the USA team of Marc Ganzi, Nic Roldan, Polito Pieres and Mike Azzaro in 2013.

This year the USPA will field a team consisting of Julio Arellano (8), Jeff Hall (7), Nic Roldan (8), and Costi Caset (5). Carlucho Arellano (5) will serve as the alternate and coach. The USA currently holds the record for the most tournament wins (10-7), but has not hoisted the cup high since 1992, when Rob Walton, Owen Rinehart, Adam Snow and John Gobin captured the win in a thrilling double overtime victory. Team USA will be hosted at the Cowdray Estate in Midhurst West Sussex where pregame practices will also be held. An invitation has been extended to the HPA to play the Westchester Cup on U.S. soil in 2019.

“I am delighted that the USA team has issued a challenge and that the Flannels England team will be competing for this great cup in 2018,” said HPA Chairman, Stephan Hutchinson. “A huge amount of our pride and history is caught up in the Westchester legend and we want it to become the Ryder Cup of polo. I look forward to an exciting new chapter of this great story at our new venue.”

“To compete for the Westchester Cup is very meaningful to the players,” said USPA Executive Director of Services Carlucho Arellano. “Whenever you travel overseas to represent your country, the importance of victory grows exponentially. The challenge trophy, which the winners retain, has a great history of healthy but fierce competition. It has been in England since 1997, so this will be a significant match for the USA team”

“We are delighted that this fantastic trophy will be competed for here at the new hub of English polo on our first International Day,” said Jamie Morrison, Chairman, Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club. “It is going to be a very exciting and truly international day with the Flannels England team versus the USA team. Additionally, the Flannels England Ladies team will be playing for the Diamond Jubilee trophy. We are thrilled to host these two world-class matches.”

About the Westchester Cup

The cup itself was created by Tiffany & Co. for the first match between the United States and Great Britain which was played in 1886. The cup was then contested as a best of three tournament in 1902, 1909, 1911, 1913 and 1914 when the first World War interrupted the game and caused the death of many of the best players. Revived in 1921, it was played for in 1924, 1927, 1930, 1936 and 1939, all of which were won by the USA. After the Second World War, the Cup was not played again until 1992 when it was reintroduced as a one-off match. Played in England in 1992 and 1997, in the USA in 2009, and in England again in 2013, the record is 10-7 favouring the USA.

SAPA Docklands Polo with Alec Banner-Eve, Ed Banner-Eve and Harold Hodges (Most Valubable Player) are the winners of the breathtaking and thrilling final of the 23rd Arena Gold Cup at the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club with 18:15. In a very fast and even game SAPA Docklands Polo faced a strong Regal Warriors Team with Raph Singh, Grant Collett and the outstanding 9-goaler Max Charlton. Everybody was already expecting a fifth chukka as the teams came out at a 15:15 score only ten seconds before the final bell. A 2-points goal and another 1-point goal helped SAPA Docklands Polo in the literally last moment to emerge victorious. Commentator Jan-Erik Franck: „The level of polo as it was expected was really high. We had eight very strong teams here at the Arena Gold Cup 2018. In the final we saw competitive polo, Charlton put on the heat. On the end of the fourth chukka SAPA Docklands turned it all again and literally nicked it in the final moment.“

The Ladies Arena British Polo, which was played before, was won by Team Glitterati Polo with Kirsty Craig (Most Valubable Player), Rosie Ross and Kirstie Otamendi. They took and defended the led against Tally Ho Farm with Charlotte Christodoulou, Nell Jacob and Heloise Wilson-Smith with a final score of 16:12.

In the Arena Silver Cup the audience saw a competitive Team Tchogan (winner of the Arena Gold Cup in 2007, 2009 and 2011) featuring Heiko Voelker, Eden Ormerod and 7-Goaler Sebastian Dawnay. From the very beginning they left no doubt who controlled the Silver Cup final and defeated Team Sifani with Hilali Noordeen, Richard Blake-Thomas and Ryan Pemble by 20:12.
