Spanish Women’s Polo Championship

The Hook Polo Team is the winner of the IV Spanish Women’s Polo Championship at the Santa María Polo Club. Professionals from eight countries played the biggest women’s tournament of the European season last weekend. POLO+10 was also present with its own team in Sotogrande.

After three days of intense competition, the players of the Hook Polo team have been proclaimed the winners this Sunday of the 4th edition of the Spanish Women’s Polo Championship, the largest event of its kind in Europe. The quartet formed by Clara Cassino, Tiva Gross, Katie McKinney and Natalia Bayarre beat Club Marítimo Hotel in the final, held in the courts of Los Pinos del Santa María Polo Club. This has been the last sporting event before the start of the 47th International Polo Tournament, on July 25th.

In the match for first place played on Sunday morning, Hook Polo’s quartet defeated the Club Marítimo Hotel team, made up of Lia Salvo, Carla Álvarez, Vicky Machiorello and Suzane Rosenkranz, 7.5 goals to 2. In a fast and exciting final, where both teams arrived undefeated, Hook Polo took the lead on the scoreboard from the first half, by 2.5 to 1 goals, an advantage that would increase in the second and third chukker, until the end of the match.

Many people came to cheer on the polo players from the terraces and stands of the Santa Maria Polo Club in a magnificent weekend of summer and holidays for many. Whole families enjoyed a morning of sport, which ended after the awards ceremony with the traditional Argentine barbecue in charge of the restaurant La Quinta. In the fight for third and fourth place, the Nipas team beat POLO+10 /Mata Sevilla&Boca, while the N. Equi Events players were fifth and the Polo Club del Sol sixth.

A total of 24 professional players from eight countries have played this tournament at a level of 12 to 16 goals, in the biggest women’s tournament of the European season. Women’s polo is the fastest growing segment of this sport, thanks to the numerous clubs that, like the Santa María Polo Club, include these competitions in their sports calendars. After the delivery of Joanna Mobley, polo player and founder of Polo Women, and co-organizer of this competition with the Santa Maria Polo Club, thanked all the teams for their participation and “the good level of play demonstrated by all the players”. “This tournament has all the ingredients to show the public what women’s polo is like, and that it is fun over the weekend,” she added. Some of the best players in the world have participated in this competition once again, including Lia Salvo, Clara Cassino, Annabel McNaught Davies and Izzy McGregor. But also Spaniards like Carla Álvarez or Alicia Gariador.

The last sporting event before the 47th International Polo Tournament

And all this as a prelude to the great International Polo Tournament, which in its 47th edition will bring together the best players in the world on the courts of the Santa Maria Polo Club, from July 25 to September 1. The International Tournament has already become an essential summer event in Andalusia, where thousands of people come every year attracted by its leisure offer, with live music, shops and gastronomic offer. The perfect complement to a sports competition unique in Spain and among the best in its category in the world.
