we want to become the best bordeaux blend winery in south africa!

When and how did you first discover your passion for winegrowing, cattle breeding and gastronomy?
As the son of a hotelier, I was practically born with this passion. However, my father wanted to make a middle school student out of me rather than a chef. In the end, however, the cook prevailed and the first important step for my career was taken.

As the main shareholder of the top South African winery De Toren, what are the biggest challenges for you at the moment?
The period under the impact of the Covid pandemic was of course difficult for all of us. There were various obstacles, such as export bans. However, we used this phase creatively, developed new products and completed the restructuring of the winery, and also developed a new marketing strategy. Thanks to these actions, we were able to take off again powerfully in a top position, increase our sales channels – and are now selling more wine than ever before.

What are your medium- to long-term goals in this business field?
We want to become the best Bordeaux blend winery in South Africa without any ifs or buts. To actually achieve this goal, we have acquired additional land on which we are now in the process of planting new vines. We also want to launch two additional products and push our rosé wine even further.

What makes De Toren unique and special for you?
It is mainly the soil that determines the particular quality of a wine. We have more than 20 different soil types on our estate – and depending on the grape variety, one type is better than the other. But if you find the ideal soil, you get top quality grapes and this is then reflected in the wine. Another big plus is of course the elevated location with the cooling sea breeze.

In the fall De Toren brings a pure Malbec, Made in South Africa, in limited bottling on the market. What can wine connoisseurs look forward to?
I brought my passion for Malbec with me from Argentina, of course, and I quickly came to the conclusion that it should be possible to develop a top product with the help of the African climate. After some trial and error, I think we have really managed to bring a pinch of Argentina to Africa.

You‘ve also been a passionate polo player for years and travel the world for your sport, you‘re a father of three, and you‘d also like to set up a professional polo horse breeding program in the near future. How do you manage to combine these different worlds? Just by looking at your schedule?
Fortunately, it‘s much easier nowadays, because you can do a lot of things virtually. The issue of children, such as coordination with school, is a completely different challenge. But with the vacations it actually goes quite well, then I usually pick them up in Switzerland and then they just come to wherever we are. What‘s very important to me is that when I spend time with my children, I‘m also always fully there for them; place great value on the quality and the very conscious use of that time. In my eyes, that‘s worth more than when parents are around a lot but don‘t really care and instead just work through a mandatory program.

What highlights are still on the agenda for you in the current polo season?
Besides the German Polo Masters on Sylt, which are always a highlight for me, I‘m also particularly looking forward to the Gold Cup in Gstaad and the Season Closing in Villa a Sesta in Italy.

Is there a tournament that is particularly close to your heart?
My favorite is Gstaad, because it‘s always special when you can play in front of your home crowd. The mountains and the food – it all always gives me that wonderful feeling of home.

The Engel & Völkers French Open, under the umbrella of the French Polo Federation, brings together fourteen top-level teams over three weeks. Seventeen intense days where the Polo Club du Domaine de Chantilly becomes the largest European meeting of this discipline with more than a thousand polo horses on site. A technical and eventful feat also made possible thanks to the support of clubs and sports organizations based in the Île-de-France region.

For the past three years, the Engel & Völkers French Open has taken on a new sporting dimension, becoming the most competitive polo competition in September in Europe. This year, a record number of fourteen teams will take part in the Open. Teams from Germany, Great Britain, Argentina, Switzerland, and France, who, to ensure their competitiveness, have hired top Argentinean pros, the kind of players that are seen at the end of the year in the most important tournament in the world: the Argentine Open.

This exceptional line-up bodes well for some stunning games, as is often the case in September in Chantilly. Games open to the public during the week with, in parallel, other tournaments such as the Castel Trophy (6-8 goals) or the French Women‘s Open (13 to 18 September) which, once again, attracts some of the best female players in the world. Three weeks not to be missed under any circumstances, to discover polo in a relaxed way during the week or the great event that is the day of the finals, on Sunday 18 September, with its village, food-trucks, stands and animations, which will be open from 16 September.

More about the participants:

Last year, French team La Magdeleine triumphed in Chantilly with one of the top players of the Argentine Open, Tito Ruiz Guiñazu.

Seven Argentine Open players in Chantilly!
To defend this title, he will be joined in Chantilly by other players from the Argentine Open: Diego Cavanagh, a member of the La Dolfina team in 2021 alongside Adolfo Cambiaso, will be in Chantilly with Brittany Polo; Bautista Bayugar, 26, considered in Argentina as one of the aces of tomorrow where he has evolved within the Alegria Fish Creek team, in Chantilly he will play for Los Dragones; Juan Gris Zavaleta who played in Palermo for Chapaleufù will defend the French colours of Tedelou with his cousins Ramiro and Simon, a family team put together by Isabelle Larenaudie; Guillermo Terrera, member of La Dolfina II, will reinforce the French team Rexaline, winner of the Bourbon Trophy last May; Jero Del Carril shines in Argentina with La Ensenada, and remains faithful to Kazak in France, finalist of the 2021 French Open. In short, seven of the forty players of the 2021 Argentine Open will be in Chantilly in September!

Amanara, the team of Dutchwoman Nicky Sen, returns to Chantilly with the impressive Santiago Chavane, a brilliant player who played alongside the Heguy brothers in the mythical Indios Chapaleufù I team. In Chantilly, he will throw his son Lorenzo, 14 years old, a child prodigy, into the big games. They will be joined by their brother and uncle, Jota Chavane, with Los Dragones.

The Copa Cámara podium in Chantilly!
La Magdeleine will return to defend the title with Tito Ruiz Guiñazu, who shone in Palermo with Alegria Fish Creek and who will play in Chantilly alongside Facundo Llorente, who was crowned MVP of the French final. Two months later, Llorente won the coveted Copa Cámara de  Diputados in Buenos Aires, the antechamber to the Argentine Open. In Chantilly, he will be up against his teammates from La Irenitafrom that great adventure: Min Podesta in the team of French captain Bruno Bensousan, La Berta, based in England, and Agustin Garcia Grossi, who will be seen in Chantilly as a pillar of the new team La Fija Sandbox, whose French captain, Arthur Madrid, comes from Argentina.

Another former winner of this Copa Cámara, Martin Aguerre Jr. remains faithful to his Swiss team Marquard Media and to his emblematic captain of the Polo Club de Chantilly, Tomas Rinderknecht.

The Berlin Polo Club seems to have taken root in the Polo de Chantilly because after the Rider Cup, we will find the German club in the Open de France Engel & Völkers with Manuel Elizalde, who also played the Copa Cámara, as a pillar. The other German team, Team Schockemöhle, has renewed its confidence in French pro Clément Delfosse, who is always very explosive on the field and who will play alongside Argentine Valentin Novillo Astrada, a member of a famous polo family, and the German No. 1, Patrick Maleitzke.

Finally, the French n°1, Pierre Henri Ngoumou, will still be the leader of the Deauville team, Mungo, with the spectacular Tete Storni, Argentinean Pato Champion (the ancestor of horse-ball), but just as formidable on a polo field.

Facundo F. Llorente (right in white), best player in the final of the Engel & Völkers Open de France 2221, whose mare La Irenita Loli was crowned best horse in the same final, won the coveted Copa Cámara de Diputados in Buenos Aires three months later. After last year’s successful premiere, the Ladies Cup Berlin 2022 went one better with a great atmosphere and glamour. In the end, players, guests and the organizer were happy all round.

„Beautiful weather, beautiful women, beautiful horses, beautiful cars – and above all rousing polo. It couldn’t have gone better!“ After three sparkling days at PoloPark Berlin, organizer Thomas Strunck drew an all-round positive balance for the Ladies Cup 2022. Top players from eight nations such as Canada, the USA and Switzerland came to the second edition of the women’s tournament to thrill the audience with top polo. For the Argentine Milagros „Milli“ Sanchez, who with a women’s handicap of 7 is one of the world’s best young players, it was her first visit to Germany. She did not disappoint in terms of play – even if in the end she and the rest of the Polo Sylt team “only” managed third place.

The Berlin crowd was also in a class of its own, providing glamorous eye-catchers time and again: for example, the ladies from the Red Club Germany, a networking club for women founded by lawyer Michaela Mumm-von Oldenburg, who lived up to the club’s name with their dazzling outfits. And when various members of the RREC (“The international Club for Rolls Royce & Bentley Enthusiasts Germany”) drove up with their noble cars before the start of the second day of play on Saturday, hardly anyone would have been surprised if the Queen had also stopped by for a short visit…

Among the more than 1000 enthusiastic guests were celebrities such as actress Maren Gilzer, who outed herself as a polo fan: „I’ve been enjoying the atmosphere time and again for many years and am now discovering more and more women’s polo.“ Media expert Jo Groebel, whose wife Grit Weiss, who was also present, used to organize polo tournaments herself, summed up the atmosphere at PoloPark Berlin as follows: „It’s a perfect mix of casual relaxedness, a pinch of glamour and a good dose of Berlin snottiness. Wonderful!“

In addition to the new Miss Germany Tatjana Genrich and It-Girl Cathy Lugner, fashion star and eccentric icon Harald Glööckler didn’t miss the chance to drop by on finals day and enjoy the flair – although for him top-class polo was rather secondary: „I love horses! For me, they are the greatest and noblest animals in the world.“ And the weather? It played along perfectly: It was mostly sunny and neither too cool nor too hot and made a statement on the final day with bright sunshine. Visitors were treated to an exciting mix of classic burgers, salad bowls and Sylt oysters – served by Germany’s only oyster sommelier, Peter Richter.

In the end, in a hotly contested final, which like all matches was expertly commented by „The Voice Of Polo“ Jan-Erik Franck and Jan Zavazal, the team Ingo Pyko Immobilien won out of six teams with 7.5 : 6 against Ostseebad Dahme. What remains are satisfied players, guests and organizers – as well as the good feeling that the Ladies Cup is well on its way to playing out its full potential and could thus also establish itself as a fixed polo highlight of the season.

The elevated store design concept is set over 2000 sq. ft., complete with aspirational imagery, the brand’s signature stripe detailing, tech-driven touchless pay, and LED screens for streaming photoshoots and some of the world’s most exciting polo games.

Girls Galore at Polo Park Zürich

Polo Park Zürich was topping itself this year and is fast becoming the hub for female polo in Europe.

33 female players arrived at the field in Seuzach for a 2-day tournament, with 7 teams: a Challenge League with some very young players direct from the Kids Polo in Polo Park Zürich, Leonie Escher and Anna Scherr, and a Medium League, giving the higher goal players a stiff competition and a chance to show off their skill and speed.

Saturday gave us two games for the Challenge League with teams jockeying for their position. In the Medium League it was a round robin with the results being carried over to the Sunday.

The heat is on.

The Sunday had Polo Park Zürich showing itself from its glamorous side – sponsors setting up their stands around a huge hospitality tent, with Fruitmix.ch providing a suitably  Mediterranean lunch, fitting to the surroundings and the temperature which was creeping up above the 30° mark. Guests could stroll around the pop-up stands providing products as wide-ranging as Manuka honey from New Zealand  Swissmanukaenthusiasts, to a touch of Argentina by Pampa Origine, cigars from ZigarrenKurier or Italian fashion by KA/NOA  .The first two games were for the Challenge League Trophy and here Team Polo Park Zürich defeated Team Hato and took third place. The fight for first place between Team Jolies Filles and Team Black Hound was close, but  the final minutes of the last chukker saw Black Hound slice in the deciding goal for a 4-3 win with their team of a strong Kira Wetzel, a hardworking Janique Spillmann, Antonia Sturzeis and Kathrin Gralla who shared with Katharina Donhauser.

And it gets hotter

This was proving to be the hottest day of the summer but, while the clinking of glasses was soothing, spectators were turning their attention back to the field as the Medium League was about to begin. Team Archies with Aline Haerry, Vivi Sauter, Uli Gabrin and Polina Nazarova, had shown attacking intent from the start, entering each game with the kind of focused ferocity associated with that determination to take home the trophy. The big question was, could they get the job done? Team Clinique La Prairie , Beata Dudler, Katja Grauwiler, Morgan Van Overbroek and Rosanna Turk, were ready to take on the challenge. It was a fast and physical game with some solid ride-offs and Rosanna Turk’s sprints to goal running smack into the defensive pairing of Polina Nazarova and Uli Gabrin. Aline Haerry was not just a link player but a finisher – the goal-getter for Team Archies. Vivi Sauter’s hammer shots down the sideline were real crowd pleasers. With the win against Clinique La Prairie, Team Archies were on their way to victory. But there were more games to come, with Team Clinique La Prairie up against Team Jouët, Sammy Joe Strub, Leah Kawamoto, Lorena Renggli and Anja Gutbrod. Despite the international group of lively supporters for Lorena Renggli firing her team on and a brave defence put up by Leah Kawamoto, Morgan Van Overbroek kept her composure and combined with Rosanna Turk to get the better of this game.

It was now up to Team Perrier-Jouët to put a spanner in the works as they took on the formidable Team Archies. They certainly pulled out all the stops and had a good go at it, but Team Archies’s game just seemed to get better and they could push Team Perrier-Jouët into third place.

And so we had a winner. Team Archies. Vivi Sauter’s pony, Cumbia, won BPP and for the Medium League Polina Nazarova was MVP. Lea Köchli won MVP for the Challenge League. But at Polo Park Zürich everyone get prizes. The players were weighed down with gifts from sponsors and vouchers for restaurants and hotels.

After-Polo

It was a splendid afternoon and the polo field was the perfect place to be. DJZoe was pumping out the music, the field-side bars were still open and umbrellas and sun-hats gave us the shade needed. The after-polo party was on!

Interview with Milagros Sanchez

“I want to achieve the maximum success for myself!”

She is only 21 years old and already one of the greatest young polo talents ever. Now Milagros Sanchez (handicap 1 and ladies’ handicap 7) from San Luis, Argentina, is celebrating her sporting German premiere this year at the Ladies Cup in Berlin.

You will play in the Ladies Cup for the first time. How did it come about?
Last year, Fati Balzano, a very good friend of mine, played in Berlin. Through her, I got in touch with the Ladies Cup organizer Thomas, who then gave me a lot of support in my plans to be there this time as well.

You have already played in polo tournaments in England and Italy. Have you ever been to Germany?
No, this is the first time for me to visit Germany – and I’m already very excited about all the impressions that await me!

Apart from Berlin, what other stops are on your agenda in Europe?
After my time in the capital, I will travel to England. After that, I’ll be heading back to my home country of Argentina.

And what are your plans for the second half of 2022?
In September, the new polo season starts in Argentina, which I always look forward to extremely throughout the year. And this time there are particularly many great dates, such as the Argentine Open. My schedule is definitely very well filled.

You are currently one of the greatest young talents in women’s polo and, at the age of just 21 and as the first woman, you took part in the Argentine Indoor Championship with Handicap and played against men there. Was the time in Mendoza the greatest moment of your career so far?
Definitely! Mendoza had a great impact. But there were many other moments that were very important for me personally and for my career. I have been able to represent my country in sport more than once and have also played in the USA. I won the first women’s Masters tournament and played in the Open three times. It’s fantastic what I’ve already been able to experience.

How did you discover your passion for polo?
I already felt an extremely great enthusiasm for horses when I was a little girl. A few years later I got involved in the sport of polo, and my family was not entirely innocent of that. And today polo is one of my greatest passions.

What sporting goals would you like to achieve in the coming years?
I am a very ambitious young woman and have therefore set myself high goals in polo: I want to get the maximum sporting success for myself in every tournament I play in the future.

In your eyes, what should happen so that women’s polo gets even more attention worldwide?
In general, we are already on a pretty good path: We women have conquered our terrain and we know very well how to use it for ourselves. Now it’s important that we continue to put on great tournaments around the world. And all professional women players should be appreciated much more for their dedication and passion.

Once again, the Swiss Medium Goal Championships at the Polo Park Zürich provided a tingling mix of great excitement, drama and a great atmosphere. In addition, there was a very special premiere to celebrate this year.

For years, the trophy of the “Swiss Medium Goal Polo Championships” has been considered the most coveted of the season – and this time, a total of six teams fought for victory. Five came directly from the organizing club, while the sixth team was made up of players from three different cantons and an Argentine professional.

On the first day, the level of excitement remained consistently high, as all matches came down to the wire: Polo Park Zürich won against Polo Club Zug only in overtime. There was even a dash of drama in the second match: Sébastien Le Page, playing for Los Lobos, injured himself at the end of the second chukker after scoring a goal and was therefore replaced by Stefan Roth. Then Los Lobos finished the match against Gräff Capital with a very close 9:8 victory. Séb was replaced for the rest of the weekend by Patricio Gaynor Benoit, a Swiss-Argentine player just 13 years old, due to his injury. The first match on Saturday was lost by Polo Club Zug against Gräff Capital. Kusnacht Practice, the “lucky loser” from the previous day, lost to Polo Park Zürich and in the last match of the day Los Lobos defeated Equilibrium.

Sunday, under vibrant sunshine, all teams were eager to win. While the first game was discontinued after 2 chukkas due to an accident, the second game was very disputed and Equilibrium won by only one goal against Gräff Capital.

The final between the defending champions and Los Lobos promised to be a particularly contested and correspondingly close match at the start. But after the first chukker, Los Lobos took a clear lead and finally secured the title of the 2022 Swiss Medium Goal Polo Championships with victory. For Patricio Gaynor Benoit in particular, it was a very special tournament. At just 13 years old, he is the youngest player ever to win this championship. The talent obviously runs in the family: Patricio triumphed three years after his father was able to hold the trophy in his hands.
