The premiere of the beach polo event at Berlin’s Grünau lido was a complete success in every respect.

A beach polo event in the middle of Berlin? It’s never been done before in this form. Accordingly, polo fans flocked to the Grünau lido from 29 April to 1 May, where the IceGuerilla Polo Challenge Berlin 2022 created a sparkling, glamorous atmosphere and at the same time heralded the new tournament season in Germany.

Matthias Ludwig, CEO Polo Riviera Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG with Werner Daehn – Das Boot

Rousing beach polo, a top organization and the best spring weather. “It was a perfect start and a more than successful world premiere,” as the tournament host, former German national player and 22-time German champion Alexander Schwarz, praised.

Matthias Ludwig & Mariella Ahrens (actor)

Organizer Matthias Ludwig, CEO of Polo Riviera Germany, was beaming at the end of the three great days: “I am very happy and satisfied with the tournament and also overwhelmed by the all-round positive feedback from players, guests, sponsors like our main sponsor IceGuerilla – but also from community representatives and tourism chiefs.

Bülent Sharif, Simone Thomalla (both actors) & Matthias Ludwig

Tourism chiefs like Mathis Richter, Managing Director of the Berlin Treptow-Köpenick Tourism Association, who was also full of praise: “I am grateful that the IceGuerilla Polo Challenge has found its venue in the fine sand of the Grünau lido. I thank the organizer, Strandbad Grünau and all supporters for making this unique event possible.”

DJ Tomekk

The guests – including Berliners and visitors to the city who were getting a taste of the incomparable polo tournament air for the first time – were happy that Polo Riviera Deutschland GmbH had brought such a beautiful event to the city of Berlin. An event that was charmingly hosted not only by Alexander Schwarz but also by the well-known actress Mariella Ahrens.

And from a sporting point of view? On the final day, the team from BERLINMED/Wirtschaft + Markt beat DWB Holding GmbH in the Ladies Cup – and in the Gentlemen’s Cup, the Berformance.Group beat the team from IceGuerilla/Polar Twist/Bentley Service Krauthahn Berlin.

Spreeküche Catering took care of the physical well-being of the guests and a special highlight beyond the playing field was the session by world-famous DJ Tomekk, who heated things up with his beats as part of the IceGuerilla Players Night.

In the end, happy players, guests, organizers and sponsors remain, as well as the anticipation of a repeat of this all-round successful tournament in 2023.

With about a week to go before the start of the tournament, the five teams participating in the European Zone play-offs of the World Polo Championship at the Polo Club du Domaine de Chantilly have just communicated their line-ups to the Federation of International Polo: the men in blue now know their opponents and will be able to prepare accordingly

Now it is known for instance that the Ruiz Guiñazu family is represented in two teams: Switzerland and Spain. The latter team, led by the excellent Spanish professional Pelayo Berazadi, seems to be the most impressive on paper: „Spain will certainly be our toughest opponent,“ confirms Frenchman Robert Strom. The team is made up of players who all have a lot of experience at the top level. Les Bleus will know very quickly what to expect from La Roja, as the latter will be their first opponent on 30 April at 5pm.

Italy is also a strong candidate for qualification (remember that only two of the five teams will be selected for the final phase of this World Cup). La Squadra Azzura has called on two players who are well known in France: Tete Fanelli and Martin Joaquin, who won last year‘s Coupe d‘Or de Deauville alongside the French team‘s striker Sam Sztarkman. A final where he was named MVP (most valuable player). „Along with Spain, Italy will certainly be the most difficult team to play against, without underestimating of course the quality of Germany and Switzerland“, Robert Strom also underlines.

The last time Switzerland participated in the FIP Polo World Championship was in 1995 in St. Moritz. Twenty-seven years later, the Swiss Federation is delighted to be able to present once more a competitive team at the World Championship qualifiers.

As in all team sports, Germany also has a strong team. It will be led by the German No. 1 Patrick Maleitzke, who has a good experience of the top level having played in last year’s Gold Cup and Queen‘s Cup in England with no other than Clément Delfosse, the pillar of the French team. Needless to say, the two men know each other well!

Five days of competition, ten games at the end of which it will be known, on Sunday 8 May, which two teams will go to Palm Beach for the final phase of this World Championship from 26 October to 6 November 2022.

„The World Polo Championship and its qualifiers are increasingly competitive and reflect the values of our sport. We need to strengthen both the top level and amateur polo in order to provide a solid foundation for our sport. And it is with this spirit that we are delighted to contribute to its development by hosting such events,“ said Jean-Edouard Mazery, President of the Federation of French Polo

This year with the number of clubs, the quality of the players involved, and the countries represented, it is unbelievable how the tournament has grown in only one year. I think that the POLO RIDER CUP will be one of the most important tournaments in the polo season.”

Benoît Perrier, CEO & Co-founder of GAME POLO, comments: “With 14 teams participating this year, it has been a very exciting draw. We will witness amazing qualification games during the first part of the tournament. I wish the best of luck to all the teams and participants. Gonzalo Quesada, the Argentinian former rugby player, professional coach of Stade Français Paris and a passionate polo player, continues as the POLO RIDER CUP Ambassador for the second year.

Gonzalo Quesada was pleasantly surprised with the high level of the teams, players and ponies that came to the tournament and the amazing quality of the pitches in all the games of the POLO RIDER CUP’s first edition.

He believes there are two main reasons for the success of the POLO RIDER CUP. First, the originality of being a club competition – this might sound standard for other sports, but it’s unique in polo. And second, the professionalism of the whole organization, with great attention paid to detail, that made the experience extraordinary for the spectators, players, and teams.

While talking with many players who took part in the first edition, Gonzalo Quesada realized how keen they were to win the tournament, putting in a lot of preparation and effort.

For Quesada, there are two similarities between rugby and polo. One is the commitment to your team and your role in the pitch, with each player being essential for the team and dependent on the others. And the other, that they are both contact sports, with a lot of adrenaline, it is all about winning the line and fighting for the position.

Quesada sees polo as having an exciting future, with a lot of people passionate about the sport, especially in France. He believes the POLO RIDER CUP is a great tool to increase the popularity of polo worldwide, with teams from all around the world competing in this unique 10-day international event.

Gonzalo Quesada, Ambassador of the POLO RIDER CUP, comments: “I’m thrilled and honored to continue as the POLO RIDER CUP ambassador for the second year, and fully committed this international competition. This year the tournament is bound to be even better than the first edition!’’

Benoît Perrier, CEO & Co-Founder of GAME POLO, comments: ‘’We are very happy to be able to count again on Gonzalo as the Ambassador for the POLO RIDER CUP. He has shown his passion for polo and done great work for the promotion of the POLO RIDER CUP. Gonzalo represents our sport and the gentleman spirit perfectly. He brings us the culture of rugby and a strong sense of family, two values that FIP founder Marcos Uranga also defended and brought to Polo. We feel it’s important to continue to share these values.’’

IceGuerilla Polo Challenge BERLIN 2022 presented by Krombacher, 29.04.-01.05.2022,
Strandbad Grünau (Friday to Sunday from 12 noon, 8 international teams)

Welcome to the IceGuerilla Polo Challenge Berlin 2022

“Treptow-Köpenick is the most popular tourist region in Berlin when it comes to active recreation in nature combined with the world metropolis. In no other district does the city offer so many opportunities for conscious relaxation. Water is always a unifying element here. As early as 1936, the Grünau Regatta Course was the venue for the Summer Olympic Games for canoeists and rowers and thus became world-famous. To this day, this stretch of water is not only an Eldorado for sports enthusiasts, but also a popular destination for families thanks to the beach baths. In 2022, another first for Berlin will take place in this very region. I am grateful that the IceGuerilla Polo Challenge has found its venue in the fine sand of the Grünau lido. I would like to thank the organizers, Strandbad Grünau and all the supporters for making this unique BeachPolo event possible. I wish all players and their horses a successful tournament and all visitors and guests exciting days and lots of fun in the greenest and most waterrich district of our city.”

Mathis Richter
Managing Director Tourismusverein Berlin Treptow-Köpenick e.V.

Matthias Ludwig, CEO Polo Riviera Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG

Among many others, the Strandbad Grünau and the Tourismusverein Berlin Treptow-Köpenick e.V. with Mathis Richter as partner are to be mentioned here. Only with their help can we successfully set up this event so that it can show its attractiveness for visitors and its economic appeal in the region and beyond.”

The polo season in Germany is starting again and the current corona situation means that beautiful and exciting polo sport can be shown again. The PoloPark Berlin (one of the oldest, most traditional and most central polo facilities on the outskirts of Berlin) in Dallgow Döberitz OT Seeburg opens its doors again. At the season opening tournament from April 29th to May 1st, 2022, six international polo teams with over 100 polo horses from 6 nations (Germany, Argentina, Brazil, USA, Persia and Luxemburg) have registered for this official tournament of the German Polo Ass. e.V. There are three polo games every day from 12:00 p.m. All games are expertly moderated by “Jan Zavazal” and with music by DJ Sebastian(BastikSoul)there is a nice program for visitors and guests. Among other things, we have the polo national and squad trainer Thomas Winter and the captain of the polo national team Christopher Kirsch, as well as top Argentinian and German professionals on site.

On 90,000 square meters there are also enough outdoor areas and parking spaces for visitors and guests. It is a fascination to experience this “royal sport” or “sport of kings” live in the capital Berlin. The visit is free. A restaurant is also on site. The participating polo players will also be committed to the Ukraine. Further information and table reservations at: www.baltic-polo-events.de
