The Balance launches the world‘s first offshore RehabClinic program on Superyachts.

Each one of us has at some time in our lives felt the healing power of the ocean. The vast expanse of the sea has a calming effect on our minds, providing a respite from our hectic lives. The power of water and the sea is profound and humbling, its effects are not merely sensory but scientific, with studies reporting that negative ions produced by the churning ocean waves have a revitalizing and calming impact on depression, addiction and overall mental health.

Such is the healing prowess of the ocean that it has inspired the future of luxury healthcare. The advent of experiential yacht-based treatment programs combining cutting-edge medical technology with the science-backed therapeutic properties of the sea marks a significant shift in the approach to mental health wellness and addiction treatment.

Known as the World’s premier luxury rehab centre and mental health clinic, The Balance has already gained a reputation for excellence. Providing leading rehabilitative and mental health services in dedicated centres in Mallorca, London, and Zurich with affiliations in New York. Now to meet the needs of its strictly confidential clientele, the facility is now ready to launch something new – superyacht-based clinic for the ultimate in privacy and luxury.

Offering top-rated recovery treatment programmes to support a wide range of emotional, physical, and psychological issues, The Balance off-shore rehab programmes include a comprehensive medical check-up – including external health assessments – and the creation of a tailored unlimited treatment plan, which can include one-client only exclusive hospitality. The Balance approach treatments will be configured to tackle the root causes of individual health concerns and will feature a holistic approach to any problems. Including biochemical restoration, 24/7 access to a live-in personal manager, a personal chef and diet plan, and the latest technology-based therapies.

As a luxury rehabilitation centre, The Balance is known for specialising in the treatment of substance abuse and behavioural dependencies, but it also offers far-reaching support for mental health conditions, eating disorders, trauma and complex PTSD, dual diagnosis, and other mental health and psychiatric conditions, including ADHD and OCD. Family and couples therapy is also available, and an entourage can be accommodated.

These unique offshore programs provided by The Balance Luxury RehabClinic, blur the line between luxury travel and healthcare. They transform the traditional concept of rehabilitation, creating a tranquil space aboard a yacht to provide an unparalleled environment for recovery. As Dr. Sarah Boss, Clinical Director at The Balance, explains, “A holistic approach is critical in recovery as it acknowledges the complexity of human beings. We are not just physical bodies; our mental, emotional, and spiritual states play a crucial role in our overall health.”

Embracing the idyllic and serene environment of the sea, these programs provide a comprehensive approach to rehabilitation. While traditional healthcare approaches have yielded results, this innovative blend of luxury, experiential therapy, and scientific research adds a new dimension to the recovery process in both their rehabilitation and medical
retreat programs.

Maria Alekseenko Magan, founder of The Experiential Yachting Forum, a platform advocating the future of human potential onboard superyachts, affirms, “Traditional methodologies for approaching mental and physical health are in the process of evolving.”

This evolution of healthcare, where the ‘water world’ plays an integral part in the treatment process, represents a shift into an era of the Experience Economy. “We are entering a new era where the sea, the floating facilities, and the activities conducted on it can play a much more important role in a holistic approach to healthcare,” Magan continues. Here, the ocean becomes an immersive element of recovery, demonstrating the transformative power of experiential healthcare.

As we look ahead, this fusion of luxury, science, and nature illustrates the evolving face of top-end healthcare. With The Balance leading the way, the future of recovery and rehabilitation could indeed be at sea, capitalizing on the healing power of the ocean and advanced technology. This revolution not only provides transformative experiences to those on the journey to recovery but also creates a paradigm shift in how we perceive and approach healthcare.

“This evolution marks a transformative moment in top-end healthcare, revolutionizing the way we view recovery. Within these innovative experiential yacht-based recovery programs, the importance of a personalized approach cannot be overstated. As every individual has unique needs, past experiences, and challenges, treatment should be tailored accordingly. This emphasis on individuality is a key feature of these programs.” says Abdullah Boulad, founder and CEO of The Balance.

Moreover, these yacht-based programs prioritize privacy and discretion, allowing individuals to focus on their recovery without fear of public scrutiny or stigma. This discreteness, coupled with luxurious accommodations and amenities, ensures that every aspect of the individual’s journey is as comfortable
as possible. Boulad continues.

It is a bright dawn for these experiential yacht-based recovery programs, underscoring the growing recognition of the interplay between physical surroundings and mental health. The merging of luxury, technology, and the therapeutic properties of the sea provides a template for the future of top-end healthcare.

A New Beacon for Polo in Northern Germany

Situated between Bremen and Hamburg, Polo Park Tiam is making a name for itself as Germany’s most exclusive polo club. With first-class facilities and a dedication to fostering the next generation of players, it is revolutionising the sport.

Highlight of the Northern German Polo Scene: Polo Park Tiam

Set amidst an expansive sea of meadows and pastures, a new gem of German polo is emerging between Bremen and Hamburg: Polo Park Tiam. Sarah Schrader’s intensive search up and down the country, concluded near Hamburg, where she found the perfect location for a polo club. The Polo Park Tiam, a 22-hectare polo oasis in the Elbe-Weser triangle, opened its doors in the spring of 2022.

A Polo Paradise near Hamburg

For both polo enthusiasts and professionals, the Polo Park in Neu Bretel provides an extensive infrastructure: a large full-size cancha that can be divided into two playing fields, a two-kilometer-long canter track, a 60×40-metre outdoor riding arena, and an indoor polo arena. “Our strength lies in our manageability,” emphasizes Sarah Schrader. The facility offers 20 stables, half- or full livery services and everything the heart of a polo enthusiast could wish for, such as a solarium and a horse walker. Although the facility could theoretically be expanded to 70 stables, this does not align with Sarah Schrader’s philosophy. Her declared goal is to meet the highest expectations of horses and riders in the areas of training, sport, and breeding.

A unique selling point of Polo Park Tiam is the impressive 60x40metre indoor arena. It is the only establishment of its kind in Europe, as confidently stated by the manager. Regardless of the weather, horses and riders can train in Neu Bretel all year round.

Polo Park Tiam hosts four annual competitions, two of which are held in the light-flooded indoor arena and 2 on the extensive outdoor playing fields. Sarah Schrader invites participants to these tournaments twice a year. Horses are turned out every day and enjoy the generous 20 hectares of pasture and paddocks.

Women-Power in Polo

Besides a successful career in real estate, project development, and interior design in Hamburg, Sarah Schrader’s true passion has always been for the sport of polo. Sarah’s keen eye and sensitivity for aesthetic designs is evident in every corner of Polo Park Tiam, particularly in the stylish and charming Polo Riders’ Lounge. The Persian-born designer named her riding facility “Tiam”, Persian for “my eyesight.” This name underlines her profound connection to the sport and simultaneously alludes to polo’s historical roots, which trace back to the 6th century BC in Iran and the Near East.

At that time, women were already actively involved in polo – a fact that Sarah Schrader, loves to emphasize. At Polo Park Tiam is she is dedicated to promoting and supporting women’s polo, even by using her own magnificent Appaloosa stallion Sopreso.

Sopreso, a breeding stallion showing a distinctive colour pattern across his back and hips, contributes to Sarah’s goal of breeding reliable, safe, and easily manageable polo ponies. Through this, she aims to make the sport of polo more appealing to women, children, and young people.

Despite a handicap of -2, Sarah Schrader shares her passion for polo with others, introducing them to the sport. Within the park’s Polo Academy, international professionals offer courses catering to all skill levels.

Last weekend, France won the first Arena Polo World Championship after a fantastic final against the United States in the home of world polo, Argentina. A historic achievement for French polo! And an important recognition for the Polo Club du Domaine de Chantilly where the six players who worked on this success come from.

A victory and a title all the more emblematic as they were won in Argentina, the land of polo par excellence, at the Carona Polo Club, in Capilla del Señor, in the province of Buenos Aires. Six teams were competing in the finals: France and Austria qualified for the European zone, the United States for North America, Morocco for the rest of the world and, last but not least, Argentina and Uruguay, the two strongest nations in South America. France simply beat all these teams!

In the group stage, Les Bleus (Louis Jarrige, Dorian Bulteau and Edwin Robineau) got the better of Morocco, Austria and Uruguay to qualify for the semi-finals against Austria again. With a reshuffled team with the entry of the more experienced Gaëtan Gosset and Adrien Le Gallo, the French team was jeered and dominated 7-5 at the end of the third chukker before delivering an exceptional final chukker by inflicting a 6-0 to the Austrians for a final score of 11-7 that sent them to the final against the United States.

The American team had shown its ambitions before this world championship and was counting on leaving with the title as their n°1 player, Jared Sheldon, handicap 5, had clearly announced in the columns of ClickPolo magazine. Indeed, victory was well underway for them in this final before the French started fighting back and equalized at the very end of regulation time, 8 – 8… to finally win in overtime on a penalty that Gaëtan Gosset did not hesitate to transform to win this first major title for French polo!

© Guadalupe Aizaga / @lupeaizaga

It was an unforgettable moment for these players, as Adrien Le Gallo confided: „It was already an emotional moment to hear your national anthem before a world final, it gives a real boost before such a game. The semi-final was particularly hard for us because we had to fight from one end to the other. We completely changed our tactics for the last period, a winning choice that allowed us to lead them 6-0 within a few minutes although we were down by 2 goals at the beginning of the last chukker. We didn‘t know the horses we were riding which was an extra pressure in the semi-final. As a result, we were able to make a more intelligent list of horses for the final.”

“A final against the Americans who are particularly efficient in the arena, but we didn‘t give up until the equalizer that allowed us to get this victory in the extra chukker“. Adrien Le Gallo, like his five teammates, comes from the training branch of the Chantilly Polo Club, which is also the federal center for the preparation of the French teams, and he paid tribute to Philippe Perrier, director of the Polo Club and DTN (national technical director) of the French Polo Federation: „He has been so dedicated to the cause of French polo for many years and I think it is a wonderful reward for him that France has finally won a title in an official championship, even if it is only on sand. When you stand on the podium, it‘s a lot of emotions and you think about all that. It‘s a title won with friends and I‘m happy to have been able to finish the work started by Louis Jarrige and Dorian Bulteau, by qualifying for the finals in this way.”

These tactical changes mentioned by Le Gallo, are the choices that the national coach, Matthieu Delfosse, took from a distance by following the games live and sending chukker by chukker his instructions to his assistant, Celestin Hue who was on the field side in Argentina. An intense coaching which bore its fruits to the greatest happiness of the technician: „It is a huge emotion and joy because the six boys were all fabulous. They showed enormous courage during this final where they were led, badly handled with complicated horses. At the beginning of the game, they had the weight of the challenge of such a final on their shoulders. All day long, I kept telling them that they could win, that they would win. They were not the favorites, far from it, but they always believed in it and they went to get this victory at the end of an incredible suspense, in overtime. It‘s fabulous, I‘m very, very happy for the group and it‘s a great title for French polo, which I hope will be followed by others.”

WHAT IS ARENA POLO?

© Guadalupe Aizaga / @lupeaizaga

Arena is to polo what horse-ball is to pato or what beach-volley is to volleyball. It is played on a sand “court” (arena= sand in Spanish) of smaller size with three players per team instead of four for the „big“ polo and a leather ball the size of a small handball. It requires a lot of reactivity, reflexes and skill with the ball.

For amateur players, arena polo is a less expensive way to play polo. It requires fewer horses and the green fees are lower. For professional players like our six world champions, it is a way to continue training and competing during the winter break when the grass fields are closed. It is undoubtedly thanks to a very competitive French circuit, the Arena Polo Tour, which passes through Chantilly, Fontainebleau, Deauville, La Baule and La Motte-Beuvron, that our French players were able to show themselves particularly ready and competitive for this first World Championship. Thanks to this title, France, and probably Chantilly, will be able to host the second edition of this Mundial de Arena Polo in 2027.

In the world of equestrian sports, the Nations Cup is the flagship team event of a season and a federation for the Olympic disciplines (show jumping, dressage and eventing). The Nations Cup is the only team class in of this mainly individual sport with of course the European, World and Olympic Team Championships. Each year, a national federation can organize only one Nations’ Cup per country.

This concept, which is highly publicized, did not yet exist in polo, even though it is a team sport par excellence! The prospect of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games has inspired the French Polo Federation (FFP) and the Chantilly Polo Club: the Polo Nations Cup will be held in June 2023 (from 8 to 18). It will oppose, at a 12-goal level, teams representing a nation and a region or a state selected by their federation with a maximum of two foreign players per team.

In 2024, this Polo Nations Cup will be part of the events held outside the official program organized in the wake of the Paris Olympic Games.

Polo has always been part of the Olympic family and the FIP is a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Polo has been an official discipline of the Olympic Games five times. First played at the 1900 Summer Olympics, it was dropped from the program after the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. It was an Anglo-American team that won the first gold medal in 1900, then Great Britain twice (1908 and 1920) before Argentina took over (1924 and 1936).

The Polo Nations Cup will perhaps allow a gradual return to this beautiful era of polo at the Olympic Games, but above all to attract the public around the fields to continue to develop polo in France!

All the games took place on the club’s nine fields. A relaxed, cavalier spirit continues to flourish in this countryside near Paris. The standard of polo continues to improve, with the world’s greatest players coming here regularly, attracted by the various tournaments. This year, the Grünau lido will once again be the venue for the Beach Polo Masters.

The Grünau lido has once again been transformed into the venue for the Beach Polo Masters, following on from last year’s successful premiere. Despite the current crisis, the event was held with enthusiasm and optimism, although it was an enormous challenge due to the circumstances.

Many companies acted cautiously and were unable to fulfill their commitments, making the support of long-standing partners and sponsors crucial for the success of the tournament. Special thanks were given to the Grünau Lido, the Hennigsen horticultural company, and the roofing company Rostock, as well as to the polo players, some of whom traveled long distances to attend.

They were wished much success in the team games. The fascinating sporting event thrilled everyone involved and showed great potential for future growth.

The BERFORMANCE Beach Polo World Masters Berlin 2023 were hosted by Victoria Herrmann, one of the most likeable and influential personalities of MDR/RBB television, and Alexander Schwarz, a 22-time German champion, European vice-champion, World Cup participant, former German national player, and professional polo player. Referee Octavia Campbell-Davys, who began her polo career in New Zealand in 2003 and has since officiated at numerous tournaments in various countries, ensured that the rules of the game were observed on the polo field.

The pop art painting created by polo player and painter Sarah Schretzmair was auctioned off for €2,600 to the Berformance Group for a charitable cause. Sandy Katzer, a founding member and sponsoring partner from BerlinMed, came up with the idea.

The proceeds will benefit the Eichhof Akademie e.V. equestrian sports association, which was established in April 2023 to promote equestrian sports, animal welfare, nature conservation, and youth welfare. The association is located at the Eichhof Academy near Potsdam and Berlin, where riders and horses are trained and supported based on the classical principles of horsemanship, in addition to species-appropriate husbandry.
