Kristin Grube accompanies athletes in the field of mental coaching. She is an enthusiastic polo player and can always be found in Argentina during the winter months.

For the polo player life is always about continuous development. Perfecting the swing, training and playing better horses, increasing a handicap, getting new sponsors on board, winning tournaments -are all top level priorities. However another key performance factor long appreciated by sports such as golf or tennis comes in the form of Mental Training. When most people think of this it conjures up images of blue chip company executives and not of athletes, but Mental Training can do much more and almost every sport discipline and every athlete can benefit from it. Since the mid-1980’s Mental Training has been on the rise and has proved itself relevant both in the corporate and sports sectors becoming increasingly popular as it gains traction.

Here are just a few reported polo – related problem issues:

• I‘m the world champion in training, but I often can‘t access that fabulous performance in the game! Why is that?

• My nerves fail just in front of the posts and in the last few meters I miss goals that I thought were safely in the bag – What can I do to have my full polo skills (that I KNOW I possess) ready and available when it counts?

• My performance portfolio ranges from God of Polo to Complete Beginner not able to hit a single ball straight. How can I keep my performance at a consistently high level?

• I sometimes lose my nerve in the heat of the moment. What can I do to take better control of my emotions?

• My concentration fluctuates wildly, coming and going throughout the game. How can I concentrate better?

• Just the thought of hitting a penalty shootout makes my hands sweaty! How can I harness my nervousness?

© private

Every polo player probably has experience of these issues more or less first-hand.

Frustratingly, further physical training to improve the swing or riding technique does not necessarily lead to improvement. But why not? The answer is simple: because the player is most probably not lacking technical or physical skills, but mental ones!

With the help of Mental Coaching, these and other questions can be answered. The Mental Coach helps athletes to make better use of their physical and mental potential.

During the sessions personal goals are set, stress factors analyzed and hindering thought patterns identified and rephrased into more positive ones. The Mental Coach can help to build confidence, reduce nervousness and strengthen concentration. The different techniques are designed to show the player new ways to stay in the optimal performance area, The Zone, more often and for longer.

In this issue of Polo+10 we take a brief look at Pre Game Preparation. In order to further develop our skills, goal setting is key. But actually why? Well, without some kind of target we cannot judge where we are at present in relation to where we aspire to be. Whether we come out of a tournament successfully depends to a large extent on what exactly we wanted to achieve.

We need goals so as not to leave success and advancement to chance. Goals need to be defined, pursued, subjected to a reality check from time to time, and the status quo needs to be analyzed.

In general, we distinguish 5 categories: short-term, medium- and long-term, very far-reaching goals and dream goals.

Have you clearly defined these goals for yourself? Have you internalized them and perhaps written them down in a kind of diary? If not, now is a good time to start. Write down everything you plan to do and break it down into those 5 areas. Be sure to make your goals as specific as possible.

A game plan is also an essential part of preparing for any game or training session. Do you work that out for yourself and for the team before each game? It might sound trivial, but every training chukker, and every stick & ball session should have an intentional goal – not just the ones at either end of the field. What exactly do you want to practice, which shot, which strategy or move, where exactly on the pitch do you want that ball currently in front of your stick to land?

If you regularly find yourself just hitting balls all over the field then your goals are not well formulated. If you just want to walk away as a competition winner then your goals are simply not well formulated. Or indeed, if its the other way round and you just don‘t want to lose – then you’ve also not really received the memo!

Top tip is to write down what you intend to do and how you’re going to do it – so at the end of the game or training session you can check on yourself and take to task if necessary!

Best of Luck!

…how to improve your horse’s health in everyday life!

Many horse riders only think about how to improve their horse´s health when it is already suffering from injuries and diseases. Julia Greb explains that horse owners would be much better advised to act proactively and contribute something to the health of their horse every day. Julia speaks from her own experience as a physiotherapist and osteopath for horses. She knows the aspects that owners have to consider in order to have a healthy horse by their side for many years. In this article the horse expert reveals six tips horse owners should follow every day in order to keep their animal in good shape for as long as
possible.

Tip 1: Cleaning as a massage

What many horse owners do not know is cleaning the horse is not just about removing superficial dirt. It also has important animal health benefits. With a rubber curl you can achieve a massage effect by doing circular movements and thus improve the blood circulation in the horse’s muscles.

Tip 2: Mental training

Horses enjoy games and intellectual challenges as much as humans do. The mental work not only improves the horse’s attention, but also its physical perception, as Julia Greb knows from her years of work with the animals. Pylons and poles are a great way to change things up and improve a horse’s coordination.

Tip 3: Pay attention to the diet

When it comes to nutrition, not all horses are the same. A horse that is ridden little or irregularly has a different energy requirement than a high-performance horse. Accordingly, you should adapt the basic and additional feed to the training and figure of your horse, says Julia. Otherwise, a long-term “malnutrition” of the animal can lead to serious health problems.

Tip 4: Keep moving

Regardless of whether you own a younger or an older horse – movement keeps them mobile and mentally fit. Regular exercise should therefore take place at any age. Even if the horse’s first steps may be difficult at an old age, a walk is good and important for health and does not harm the animal.

Tip 5: Daily figure check

As Julia Greb knows, obesity and the associated consequences are becoming more and more common. Obesity can also result in various metabolic diseases. If you have an easy-to-feed horse, it makes sense to ration the feed into several small portions. At the same time you should make sure that the animal gets enough exercise.

Tip 6: Fresh air and grazing times

Fresh air in the pasture is not only good for a horse’s physical health, but also has a positive effect on the animal’s psyche. Therefore it’s not just your horse’s lungs and the immune system that will thank you in the long run.

About Julia Greb:

Julia Greb helps horse owners to improve their horse’s health and has made it her business to provide clients with intensive one-on-one coachings. Thanks to more than ten years of experience as an animal physiotherapist and osteopath, she knows horses’ particularities perfectly and can foresee which steps have to be followed in order for them to become healthier.

As in other ball games there are a variety of penalties for fouls in polo. It is important to understand these so as to better follow a game. POLO+10 explain the different foul-situations according to the official rules of the German Polo Association.

It is important to bear in mind the following: ROW – Right-of-Way and LOB – Line of the Ball are not identical or interchangeable. A player on the line of the ball always has the right-of-way.

The following are forbidden and constitute a foul:

1.  Playing at an angle that could be a danger to the pony and player.

2. Playing at a higher speed than the opponent is riding.

3. Riding into the opponent’s horse from behind the saddle. Opponents may only play as high as the pony’s shoulders.

4. Riding criss-cross in the way of a galloping player in an attempt to force him to reduce speed.

5. Sideways parrying, pulling the opponent’s horse, or other similar acts that put the pony at risk of tumbling.

6. Infringement of the right-of-way.

7. Galloping head-on towards an opponent so as to intimidate him or force him into parrying or missing the ball even without fouling or crossing the line of the ball.

8. Creating the so called “sandwich” whereby two teammates force a player of the opponent’s team into the middle.

9. Intentionally riding into the opponents backhand or forward hit.

10. Riding outside the sidelines or goal demarcation lines. Riding in a manner that could harm the referee.

Penalties and free hits are taken at a distance of 30, 40, and 60 yards.

The past months offered various highlights – among others in Zurich, Berlin or China – and even more unforgettable moments of happiness.

It‘s a philosophy of life that has inspired me a lot. Asked in an interview with POLO+10 about his view of things in life, Sébastien Le Page, President of Polo Park Zurich, quotes from a book by Nietzsche: „Master, what shall I do to be happy? The master answers: just be happy!“ In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, we unfortunately too often forget to recognize happiness in the moment and to consciously enjoy it. That‘s why I plan to do just that much more in the future!

The past few months have offered various moments of happiness for polo fans and players: Special highlights included the Elasten Ladies Cup at PoloPark Berlin and the 22nd Zurich International Ladies Cup, where the women once again put on spectacular competitions. Polo is also finally making a comeback in China after the enforced break – and if the plans of hotel CEO Sanjiv Ramdanee are anything to go by, guests on the dream island of Mauritius will be able to watch polo show matches in the future.

So let‘s all look forward to the coming season in 2022, which will unfortunately have a few planning uncertainties due to the pandemic, but will nevertheless hold various new moments of happiness in store for all of us.

Short, condensed, intense – this sums up the 2020 polo season! Nevertheless, we were offered numerous polo highlights.

It was a challenging 2020 polo season, with the omen often pointing to storm. It is all the more astonishing that, in the end, the review is consistently positive. Not only the team from Polo Park Zurich responded to the challenges of the pandemic with a perfect mix of flexibility, resilience and creativity, but in fact, the entire world of polo sports adapted with these attributes to unpredictable and frequently changing regulations that impacted  travel and event organization of the 2020 polo season.

One of the highlights was the Swiss Medium Goal Championship in Zurich, in which visitors were pampered with high-class games and South American flair. And with the German Low Goal Championship 2020 in Berlin, the first great tournament of the German Polo season was able to take place despite the pandemic restrictions.

Fortunately, the signs are now pointing towards optimism for the next season. There was even a tournament premiere to celebrate in June 2021: With twelve teams from eight countries, the first edition of the Polo Rider Cup in Chantilly, France, turned out to be a success and received a lot of media attention.

The anticipation remains and we hope for ride and play through a less stormy season.
