Personalities & Clubs

Hans Albrecht Freiherr von Maltzahn, Honorary President of the German Polo Association (DPV) and Ambassador of the Federation of International Polo (FIP), died on October 12, 2020 at the age of 85.

With Hans Albrecht von Maltzahn, Polo loses one of its great personalities, a sportsman and a true gentleman who has shaped the sport and influenced many of his teammates with his commitment and passion. Hans Albrecht von Maltzahn was born on November 1st, 1934 in Pinnow, a small village between Berlin and the Baltic Sea, where he developed his passion and understanding horses from an early age.

At the end of World War II, the family von Maltzahn was forced to leave the family estate in Mecklenburg. Later in the mid-1950s his professional career took him to Guatemala where Hans Albrecht von Maltzahn discovered Polo. He was in his early twenties and as he was very talented Polo quickly became his passion and the sport would become an essential part of his life.

During the years in Central America, Hans Albrecht von Maltzahn developed into an exceptional player. He made many long lasting friendships and contacts in the world of Polo in that time. And his natural talent for bringing people together should shape his future career in Polo.

After his return to Germany Hans Albrecht von Maltzahn helped to develop the modern Polo in Germany

After returning to Germany in 1960, von Maltzahn joined the Hamburg Polo Club. Polo was a developing sport in his home country then and many of the modern structures had not yet been developed. The British military that was still present in West Germany in those years had a great influence on the German Polo Clubs and together many matches were played and social events were held. It was in those days that von Maltzahn understood that the German Polo needed to be modernized to keep up with the competition.

Convinced that with better horses Polo would become more competitive Hans Albrecht von Maltzahn decided to buy his first horses from Argentina. This was revolutionary at the time but soon other players followed him and started importing young Polo Ponies.

During the following years von Maltzahn became an outstanding player of his time and eventually was given the first 4 goal handicap in Germany. He and his team successfully participated in several big tournaments. They not only played all over Germany but in Windsor as well as Paris, Barcelona and Sotogrande, Teheran and Buenos Aires of course.

Through these international events von Maltzahn again came in contact with many different people in Polo and he always kept an eye on the latest developments. He represented the German Polo community and made many friends along the way.

In addition to playing Polo Hans Albrecht von Maltzahn also became involved in the general organization of German Polo. His now global network of like-minded Polo enthusiasts and his reputation as an outstanding player allowed him to exchange his ideas and to push innovations.

From founding member to President of the German Polo Association DPV

In the early 1970s a group of German Polo players followed the idea of founding a German Polo Asociation, and von Maltzahn was one of them. The intention behind this was to further develop Polo to a professional level, expand the sport and promote it. Equestrian sports had always been popular in Germany and the upcoming 1972 Olympic Games in Munich were a perfect opportunity to present German Polo to a wider audience.

The first preliminary registration of a German Polo Association was made in 1971 and after the death of Robert Miles Reincke, who had been the chairman and a friend from the Hamburg Polo Club, von Maltzahn followed in this position.

In those early days of the DPV the team along Hans Albrecht von Maltzahn began developing new ideas and a concept that still today gives Polo in Germany its basic structure. Annually held national championships were established. Until today these tournaments are a great incentive for international teams to visit Germany and play there. The association also early on claimed to define the official Polo rules for all Polo played in Germany by adopting the Hurlingham rule book and established formal rules for the pony welfare.

With the formal formation of the German Polo Association in 1977 Hans Albrecht von Maltzahn was elected first president by the members and three years later he was confirmed for a second term running until 1983. Under his presidency more structures were created shaping modern Polo in Germany, newly emerging Polo clubs were supported and contacts were established to further link the DPV with the world of Polo.

Since his professional life outside Polo offered him new opportunities von Maltzahn gradually withdrew from actively playing Polo in the early 1980s. He focused on his voluntary work for the Polo Association and continued to play a key role in shaping German Polo during these years. In 1983 he chose to resign from his position on the board of the DPV and ended his engagement altogether. However, these very successful 30 years in Polo should be only the first chapter.

The return to the Gut Pinnow estate and a new start

With the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany in 1990, Hans Albrecht von Maltzahn and his family were presented with the historic opportunity to return to his families’ estate „Gut Pinnow“ located between Berlin and the Baltic Sea. This new episode in his personal life began in the mid-1990s, when the family took the chance and returned. Together with his wife Cornelia von Maltzahn he devoted himself to rebuilding the family estate into a modern agricultural enterprise.

In 1998, at the age of 64 and some 18 years after he had stopped playing, his two nephews managed to persuade him to a return to Polo. They both needed an additional player for a small tournament and what was intended to be a one-off quickly turned into von Maltzahns second career in Polo. All it took now was a new helmet, given to him by his wife Cornelia, and a new set of Polo ponies. He found them in Argentina, just like the first time when he started in Hamburg in 1960.

The family estate soon became a popular place for friends and Polo enthusiasts. A Polo field was built next to the manor and regular tournaments made the newly founded Mecklenburg Polo Club Pinnow widely known in Germany.

In 2002 Hans Albrecht von Maltzahn was re-elected President of the German Polo Association, 30 years after the DPV was founded under his administration. Again he successfully worked for the development of the sport and the German Polo community, managed the DPV and tied Germany closer to the international Polo cummunity. As a representative of the German Polo Association he regularly participated in international FIP meetings. There he was highly regarded for his commitment and services to the sport.

In 2005, von Maltzahn was appointed Ambassador by the Federation of International Polo for his passionate work for Polo and his sporting career. This great honor underlines the significant contribution he has made to the international Polo community.

In the following years he returned to playing international tournaments, he took part in the Ambassador Cup events and introduced young German Polo talents to the international stage. Moritz Gaedeke was among those talents, a player who later became a member of the German National Polo Team and today is successfully playing and organizing the biggest Polo tournament in Germany.

As President of the DPV Hans Albrecht von Maltzahn had successfully contributed to the reopening of the historic Maifeld Polo ground in Berlin from 2010. And he also supported the German application to hosting to the 2016 FIP European Polo Championships on the Maifeld.

His life after Polo and on the Gut Pinnow estate

In 2013, at the age of 79, Hans Albrecht von Maltzahn retired from the board of the German Polo Association. He had been President of the DPV for another eleven years during which the association had grown continuously. Polo was played in over 30 German Clubs, the promotion of dedicated Youth programs was showing to be very successful, horsemanship and animal welfare had become integral elements of the sport. During the years of his presidency and due to the growing number of supporters by his side, Polo in Germany had developed into a well-known and popular sport with record numbers of active players and regular guests from many different countries.

In recognition of his outstanding achievements for the sport, the German Polo Association appointed Hans Albrecht von Maltzahn honorary president. With this the DPV paid tribute to the more than five decades of passionate commitment to Polo both as a very successful player and as President.

After leaving office in 2013 von Maltzahn dedicated his life to his family and his now very successfully established Gut Pinnow estate. As a guest at various tournaments, especially on the Berlin Maifeld, he was a highly respected and much welcomed guest. His experiences and his advice were very much appreciated and he still was very much interested in the latest news and developments around Polo.

Hans Albrecht Freiherr von Maltzahn died on October 12, 2020 at the age of 85 in his estate in Pinnow.

Polo has lost a great sportsman, a role model and a friend. The board of the German Polo Association and all members, his companions and friends whom he inspired, encouraged and supported bid farewell to a true gentleman and an oustanding sportsman.

Wellington, FL, October 23, 2020 — Grand Champions Polo Club has named Steve Lane as its new chief umpire for the 2021 season.

Grand Champions Polo Club announced today that Steve Lane has accepted the position of chief umpire, beginning with the 2021 Florida season. Since 2012, Lane has served as an umpire instructor.

Lane has an impressive track record as an umpire, and was part of a historic 1992, invitation-only umpire training clinic in Indio, CA. In 1993, he was chosen to be one of the country’s first professional umpires. Holding a 2-goal handicap as a player, Lane was one of the first low goal players to umpire high goal polo and hold the AA rating.

Over the course of his career, Steve has umpired some of the world’s most prestigious tournaments, including each of the six high goal tournaments held at the International Polo Club in Wellington, many tournaments on the west coast, the Federation of International Polo (FIP) World Championship in Mexico City, and the Zone A FIP playoffs in Rome and the UK. He’s also held a number of umpire training and rules clinics during his careerfor umpires and playersof all levels. Lane had the ability to explain the rules making them easy for novice umpires and players to understand.

In 2020, Steve began working with ChukkerTV as a field side commentator, and the World Polo League as an instant replay official (IRO). When the COVID-19 pandemic cut the high goal season short, he partnered with Melissa Ganzi to bring her “Skills of the Game” series to life. Envisioned as a way to keep polo alive amidst the quarantine, the “Skills” series pitted teams of three professionals against each other to demonstrate their skills in hitting long shots and penalties, as well as shots on targets.

Participating players included Tincho Merlos, Nacho Novillo Astrada, Alejandro Novillo Astrada, Nic Roldan, Sugar Etskine, Horacio Heguy, Barto Castagnola, and Camilo Castagnola as well as Marc, Melissa, and Grant Ganzi. Ganzi and Lane plan to expand the “Skills of the Game” series as it continues through the 2021 winter season in Florida.

Says Ganzi, “We really enjoyed working with Steve as an IRO and as an integral part of the ‘Skills of the Game’ series. We’re delighted that he’s decided to join us at Grand Champions, and I’m sure that with his experience as an umpire instructor he’ll be invaluable in elevating our level of play.”

“It was an honor to work with the World Polo League last year, and I couldn’t be happier to be joining Grand Champions. Marc and Melissa make an incredible contribution to the world of polo and I look forward to being part of that,” said Lane.

Greetings and a very warm welcome to my “speakers corner” in the next edition of the new POLO+10 World.

I’d like to start by saying that 2020 has without doubt been one of the most memorable years of our lives for all of us. A year which has forced everyone to reflect on how we got here and very much think about what the future holds. I hope that you and your families are safe and well in these very uncertain times and that we can all get back to living happy and exciting lives very soon 🤙🏼.

As far as “reflection” goes, for me 2020 marks a 10 year anniversary which has brought back some very happy memories. The amazing people I’ve met over the years, the friendships that were made, the wonderful places I’ve been fortunate enough to see and get to know. Polo has taken me to over 16 countries many of which I had never visited before and introduced me to new cultures and different ways of thinking.

I’ve also been very fortunate to have worked and been involved in polo in so many different ways. When I came to the the UK back in 1998 and worked for Champagne Pommey, surly you remember the team John William Manconi, Piki Alberti, Juan Bollini and Henry Brett wining the British Open Gold Cup In 1999. It was a perfect day, especially as the Tournament main sponsor was Veuve Cliquot.

Later then working for one the pioneers of English Polo, Brian Morrison and his Captain Michael Amoore at the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club. I owe everything to the infamous Steve Thompson who got me in the saddle and taught me how to ride. Thanks Steve, you did a great job.

It was The Captain Michael Amoore who once said to me during a riding lesson “try not to look like a constipated b*****d when you ride a horse” I will always remember that, thanks Michael.

After several years working as a coach, umpire and player it was then on to setting up MIG Polo which was launched back in 2004 and is still going strong today. Having provided the worlds largest mobile screens at all of the UK’s major polo tournaments and on Finals day of the British Open – The Gold Cup.

It was Daniel Waechter who on a sunny Sunday afternoon at Guards Polo Club approached me and asked if I would like to come out to Klosters and commentate a snow polo tournament. I kindly accepted his offer and this challenge to venture into an area of Polo I had previously never considered or thought about. The name “The Voice of Polo” was then given to me by POLO+10.

During the last 10 years I have met and worked with some incredible people in this sport. The common dominator always being the passion for the game. It has been such a pleasure being part of so many great teams again and again and contributing, where I could, in developing any of the tournaments I attended.

It really has been an exciting and thrilling decade and there are so many people I’d like to thank for supporting me and believing in me over the years. It would be too many to mention here (also in case I forgot someone) but I’m sure you know who you are…..

Thank you once again for the last amazing 10 years and being your voice of Polo.

I’m more than ready for the next 10 years.

Pepe Riglos at the Academy in Spain explaining how to prepare horses for chukkers. Pepe is a former 7 goal player and a highly recognized expert in training polo horses (also humans! 😉). He is our top advisor at the Academies Polo Horse Training Centre.

CLICK ON THE VIDEO to watch it!

Here what he recommends when it comes to improving horses:

“Always pay attention on the temperament of the horse, as there is a lot of pressure inside the field. Outside the field everything should be really calm. We should not put horses in the field if they are not calm, they are not ready to stand the pressure.

As we work the horses patience is everything. Having a nervous horse (many horses from the racing track are very nervous at the beginning) work it step by step, very slowly to get it calm.

A whip is good to have (so the horse knows that you have one), but we should use it very carefully, as it can have a harmful effect on the horses progress in becoming a relaxed and good polo horse. So let’s have patience, your horse should like the work and become a bit better every day!”

Any question you have concerning educating your horse send a message!

Polo Park Zürich is happy to share his polo program for Summer 2020. This season was delayed due to COVID19 in Europe and the closure of Buenos Aires airport. Since a few days, grooms, horses and all players are back and the club is now functioning at full speed. As most of majors events in Switzerland have been postponed or cancelled, PPZ may become this season the biggest polo hub in the center of Europe. And there will be much more than polo in the club, also available for private and companies events, starting art exhibition with some pictures from Irina Kazaridi, and organizing events such as wine tastings, test-drives, etc. “A very exciting season is awaiting us in the club !”

Germany’s oldest private bank teams up with Berlin-based fintech company to offer private equity solutions
• The private equity asset class was highly successful in 2019 and currently offers favourable entry valuations

430-year-old private bank Berenberg and digital private assets investment platform Moonfare, founded in 2016, start a partnership to provide Berenberg customers with digital access to top-tier private equity funds.

Private equity experienced significant growth in 2019, with global assets under management standing in excess of 4 trillion US dollars. The asset class consists of a variety of strategies, such as buy-out, venture capital and growth, and has in previous years consistently out-performed other asset classes. It currently boasts particularly favourable entry valuations, and can also be used to diversify portfolios. Very high minimum levels of investment and restricted access previously meant that investments in private equity were only an option for institutional investors and ultra-high-net-worth families.

“We are delighted to offer our customers outstanding access to this asset class through our cooperation with Moonfare,” says Klaus Naeve, Head of Wealth Management Germany at Berenberg. “The selection of private equity offers, combined with low minimum levels of investment for this asset class and a completely digital process, is unique in the European market,” says Mr Naeve.

Berlin-based fintech company Moonfare allows qualified individuals to invest directly in selected private equity funds starting from a minimum investment of 200,000 euros. Investors will receive access via a digital platform, that allows quick, uncomplicated investments whilst complying with regulatory requirements. Moonfare’s Investment Committee, which consists of experts from the private equity industry, selects top-tier funds through an in-depth due diligence. From this selection of funds, Berenberg then chooses the funds it deems to be the most promising and offers these to its customers.

Berenberg Wealth Management offers each individual customer a personalised service. Berenberg’s advisors draw on an extensive network of specialists to offer customised solutions to their customers, which are always backed by Berenberg’s first-class know-how. With 120 equity analysts, the bank is one of the largest analyst institutes in Europe. Its fund managers received multiple awards, and its competence centres develop specific solutions for entrepreneurs, foundations and family offices.

Thanks to the partnership with Moonfare, Berenberg’s advisors are now able to add top-tier private equity funds to their portfolio recommendations when they match the customer’s investment goals and strategy. Berenberg’s clients benefit from access to high return investments and have the opportunity to further diversify their portfolios to include another asset class. Both the advisors and their clients have direct access to the digital Berenberg/Moonfare platform, where they can review and subscribe for investment opportunities. The platform is optimised for efficient processes, transparent data access and comprehensive reporting. This new development positions the Berenberg/Moonfare platform as the leading private market offering in German private banking.

“Historically, access to private equity funds was exclusive for institutional investors committing more than 10 million euros per fund. By allocating 25% or more to alternative investments, this exclusive group boosted their portfolio returns over decades. We are delighted that our partnership benefits investors by combining Berenberg’s wealth management expertise and tailored advice with Moonfare’s technology and unmatched access to the best private investment opportunities,” says Dr. Steffen Pauls, founder and CEO of Moonfare.

Headquartered in Hamburg and led by managing partners, Berenberg maintains a strong presence in the financial centres of Frankfurt, London and New York.

About Moonfare
Moonfare was founded in 2016 and is now active in several European countries and in Asia. The fintech company offers high-net-worth private investors, banks and asset managers access to top tier private equity funds at lower minimum amounts and lower fees than previously available. The Comporta Polo Club – positioning Portugal as an international Polo Hub. The Portuguese word Alegría means happiness. With Canadian top player Fred Mannix (hdc +8) and his world-class Alegria Polo Team, the Comporta Polo Club now has a top-class advocate in the international sport of polo.

While the world stands still under the spell of the Corona Virus, preparations for the construction and opening of the Comporta Polo Club in Portugal are running full steam ahead. The architects, engineers, surveyors and creative minds have adapted to the situation flexibly, with an eye to the future and as such, are working full tilt on the next steps from their home offices. The building applications have been submitted and the authorities have given their assurance that they will deal with them quickly in light of the virus crisis, which makes their rapid processing and approval look highly likely. The wheel continues to turn and when the world starts up again, Comporta will be ready and have completed all the necessary preparations.

What the builders and Comporta visionaries Stefan Gast and Ricardo Bellino have achieved in the meantime is unique in the world of polo. They have brought star polo architect Alejandro Battro and Andrés Stirling, also renowned for his expertise in building polo fields, to the table to work together for the first time in Comporta. Alejandro Battro, who has built 800 polo fields in 35 countries over the past 40 years, is the No. 1 in the world. Stirling, who comes from Uruguay, has been at home in Sotogrande, Spain, for many years and has built and managed the last five fields for the Santa Maria Polo Club. Both will be pooling their enormous know-how in Comporta. Battro will design and plan, Sterling will project and supervise the construction on site. With a common goal in mind, both will now ensure that world-class polo fields are built in Comporta.

However, that´s not all in the line up of big names that have been campaigning in favour of the new Polo Club in Comporta since its inception. Polo titan Fred Mannix is already exuding his enthusiasm on site and is now fully committed to the project. Mannix is not only one of the best polo players in the world but also regularly participates in the Triple Crown and the Palermo Open with his world-famous Alegria Polo Team. Hence, he brings world-class polo, a huge name and is a valuable partner for the new polo Eldorado in Portugal.

Meanwhile, the purposeful minds behind the project feel that the current crisis has further driven home their commitment to incorporate sustainability, environmental protection, appreciation and a holistic approach into the new Comporta site. Obviously, a high degree of resilience and effective stress management play a huge role in ensuring an optimistic outlook for the future. The construction and grass-sowing of the polo fields is still entirely on schedule for May as programmed. There are also plans presently to set up a project known as “Comporta Valley”. The scheme compromises a digital forum for a young, international discussion group to develop forward-looking designs and key elements for a new generation concept.

Project Manager, Stefan Gast and his partner, Ricardo Bellino, are certain that “We will gain a lot of positive insights from this crisis, which in the long term will permeate our philosophy, right through to the soul, atmosphere and the international standing of the Comporta Polo Club.”

Alejandro Battro

“Comporta is a very attractive proposition due to its excellent geography, climate and proximity to picturesque beaches just minutes from the project site. The developers of Comporta Polo Club exude enthusiasm and we see this as an essential pre-requisite for achieving such an ambitious goal, namely to build a first-class polo centre. At Battropolofields we love a challenge, which is why we find this project in Comporta particularly interesting. The sandy soil has its advantages, yet it is also a challenge and requires special preparation. We will use construction techniques that are very different from what is common practice. We are deeply committed and believe this will be a wonderful location for polo.”

Fred Mannix

“It´s great to know that everyone is on form and not taking their eye off the ball! I feel honoured to be part of bringing a world class polo facility into Portugal. The team that Stefan and Ricardo have assembled has extensive experience in completing a project of this nature. When confirmation came through that Alejandro Battro, the premier polo field expert, was on board I knew we were starting on the right foot. After visiting the location some weeks ago, I saw that Comporta Polo Club is well situated in its location; only 90 kilometres from Lisbon and a short drive to the beach. The polo grounds will be world class and if you want to have a destination club for the summer season, fields will be critical. We will all be working very hard in the coming months to get the Comporta Polo Club positioned as a premier destination for polo and visitors.”

Andrés Stirling

“I believe that the success of the Comporta Polo Club project rests on three fundamental pillars: the team, the location and the courage of the players. Stefan Maria Gast and Ricardo Bellino have embarked on this project with enormous enthusiasm, a vast knowledge of human nature and a sixth sense for hiring the best experts in each individual field, as well as great conviction and a sense of quality. Due to its natural beauty and its vast size, the Comporta region is a place that is difficult to rival in Europe. I am not exaggerating when I say that Comporta can become the horse and polo capital of Europe. There is a great deal of underground water here. The motorway connection to Lisbon, the proximity to its international airport, the marina in Setubal and Comporta´s paradisiacal beaches all weigh heavily in the Comporta Polo Club´s favour. Here you have wonderful, hospitable, authentic, hard-working people on tap as well as first-class gastronomy. In terms of the final pillar, courage. In every project there must be courage, opportunity, adventure, meticulous planning and a large footprint – all of this is can be perceived here, in abundance.”

Ricardo Bellino

“The most important tournament series in the worldwide sport of polo is the Triple Crown in Argentina. Known in Spanish as the ‘Triple Corona’.  Ironically, at the moment we´re dealing with the 4th Corona Challenge.  Yet, that doesn´t prevent us from working hard on our project every day, making progress and approaching the project with the right, positive attitude. Mindset is the key to the plot here and I´m currently writing a book on the subject called ‘Mind 8’. The book deals with the fact that our current way of thinking will no longer work for a successful future or outcome. We need to adopt a new way of ‘thinking’ in which we strongly believe in unconditional success and a new horizon after the storm. All these thoughts, which I present in my book, are also highlighted in our project and the development of the Comporta Polo Club. We are embarking on a new era – and preparing ourselves and thought patterns to embrace it.”

Stefan M. Gast

“For us the development and construction of the Comporta Polo Club has a deeper meaning and purpose in terms of wholeness, sustainability and the answers we can find and provide to the pressing questions of the future. So, in this regard, the global corona virus is having a positive impact on our project as it´s leading us to pause, reflect and re-adjust right now. Next month we will be setting up an international digital workshop with young people from a wide range of qualifications and industries, in which we will ask questions about the future and seek very concrete answers that will then be incorporated into our project. Running over three to four weeks, the workshop will focus on philosophical questions such as the relationship between nature, man and animals as well as on very practical areas such organisation, design of the stables, networking and digital presence. Following the themes of Ricardo Bellino´s book, the workshop will be called ‘Mind 8 Valley’ and we are already looking forward to presenting the results to you very soon. Until then, we can count on maximum support from the various official institutions and chambers in the Alcacér do Sal region, especially the tourism departments of Alentejo and Portugal, of which we can be very proud.”
