Argentina Polo Open: the roof of the world

The Argentine Open, the last round of the Triple Crown, is the annual Holy Grail of polo, a kind of Aachen for the sport, in which the forty best players in the world take part, all but two of whom come from Argentina. In Palermo (the venue for this tournament in the heart of Buenos Aires), the legends of this sport have been written and made since 1893. The last and arguably greatest of all time is Adolfo Cambiaso, who at the age of 49 wants to win his 19th title (and 16th with his team La Dolfina) in 32 participations.

The final, which this year will be held on 7 December, will take place in front of almost 18,000 spectators. Apart from the sport, Palermo is THE annual meeting place for the polo world. Dozens of satellite tournaments are held around the city, particularly in Pilar, about 50 km from the capital, where there are no fewer than 500 polo fields. These tournaments are mainly held for the ‘bosses’, the rich enthusiasts from all continents on whom the sport‘s economy relies. Here they hire professional players for the next season, buy horses and equipment. Polo is an important economic factor for the country: more than three quarters of the saddlery produced worldwide comes from Argentina, which is famous for its leather, and 3,000-4,000 polo ponies are exported worldwide every year. Not to be forgotten is the clone business, which is booming after it has developed thanks to polo ponies, especially with the clones of the famous Cuartetera, which the atypical Argentine President Javier Milei, who obviously knows a lot about this sport, considers the best mare of all time… like her rider Adolfo Cambiaso. The two men met at the Casa Rosada last week, incidentally, and discussed the plan to make polo a national sport.

This year, Cambiaso will not defend the title won by his La Natividad nephews last year, but he is, of course, on his way to his twenty-seventh final since his debut at the age of 17. After thirteen years of ‘clásicos’ against Ellerstina, the clash with La Natividad seems to have become the inevitable final in the Open since 2021. But this year, two teams were on a roll, with La Hache (Hilario Ulloa) winning their first title by beating Ellerstina Yellow Rose (Gonzalo Pieres without his brothers but with the dreaded Sapo Caset) in the final of the Open de Tortugas, the second round of the Triple Crown. To qualify, Ellerstina Yellow Rose had beaten La Natividad, among others, who had just won the first round of the Triple Crown, the Hurlingham Open, against La Dolfina with just one goal. This means that nothing has been decided yet between these four teams and they will not face each other until the quarter-finals or, more likely, the semi-finals at the weekend of 29 November.

Family stories

In Argentina, polo is a family affair (and arguably also genetic). There was the incredible saga of the Heguy family: the fathers won the Argentine championship 20 times between 1958 and 1981, and their sons followed suit 10 times between 1991 and 2004. The probable final line-up includes a father and son, Adolfo and Poroto Cambiaso (just as phenomenal as his father), handicap 10 at the age of 19 and 17, their cousins Barto and Jeta Castagnola, also handicap 10 at the same age, and the name Pieres in three different teams. Together, the Pieres brothers had defied La Dolfina between 2008 and 2012, where Facu, Gonzalito and Nico triumphed with their brother-in-law Mariano Aguerre. Then they played with their cousin Polito… But the team didn‘t really work… well, they‘d lost in the final. They were all handicap 10, but the team fell apart and Facu now plays with the defending champion La Natividad, Polito for La Hache, while Gonzalito is rebuilding a new Ellerstina. As for Nico, with the help of Delpharm‘s French general manager, Sébastien Aguettant, with whom he won last year‘s Open de France in Chantilly, he has built a team with the young talents of tomorrow, Lorenzo Chavanne (16) and Beltrán Laulhé (17), who were also seen winning in Chantilly. The La Zeta-Kazak team had to go through the qualifiers: mission accomplished, now it‘s a matter of staying in ‘Ligue 1’!

This start to the tournament has also allowed young talents to flourish or to be confirmed, such as Rufino Bensadon, also a regular on French courts, who has excelled in team 2 of La Dolfina (victory over Ellerstina in Tortugas and over La Ensenada in Palermo), Facundo Llosa, the husband of Hazel Jackson and a real discovery at La Aguada, or Tomas Panelo, who is often decisive for La Hache.

In short, an Abierto more exciting than ever, and we can‘t wait to be there… that will be next week!

These champions in France

Of the sixteen potential semi-finalists, eleven players have already played in France, in Chantilly and/or Deauville, which says a lot about the quality of the polo played at the Barnes Open de France or the Coupe d‘Or.

A fifth team can be considered as outsiders in Palermo: La Ensenada, who put up a great fight against La Natividad in the semi-finals last year, beating La Dolfina in Tortugas, albeit without Adolfo Cambiaso. Juan M. Zubía and Jeró del Carril also won in Chantilly.

POLO+10 meets the Fagliano family

Hurlingham, a few kilometers away from frantic Buenos Aires, has an air of mystique. A traditional town of English immigrants, this place was visited by royalty, celebrities and top polo players because of a very special place: a workshop. This workshop is none other but the home of the best polo boots in the world. The Fagliano family, who has been running the shop since is beginnings, opened their doors for POLO+10.
Once you go past the Fagliano doors, the smell of leather impregnating the air, the machinery, the endless shelves containing boot molds of all sizes, surely make you acknowledge you are in a very special place, that has a story that deserves to be told. Eduardo and Hector Fagliano, are the 4th generation of boot makers, and with their father Rodolfo, and Eduardo’s son, Germán, they run the shop as their great grandparents used to.

The Faglianos have made and keep on making all their boots entirely by hand, with the processes and machinery they inherited, and without the aid of the latest technologies. Nowadays, in the age of mass production, the Fagliano boots have countless reasons that make them so outstanding. This undeniable appeal has brought to their door members of the English Royal Family, The Sultan of Brunei (who, by the way, was so impressed by the product, that ordered 120 pairs of boots at once), and even the actor Tommy Lee Jones, amongst the best polo players such as Adolfo Cambiaso.

This work philosophy called Julius Bär’s attention: the private bank understands both the sense uniqueness that comes, among others, through the respect for tradition. Fagliano’s essence and long-run heritage, together with the special dedication to each client in a most personal way, is perfectly related to the way that they run personal assets management in the prestigious bank. Thus, this resulted on an alliance, in which Eduardo Fagliano himself participated of the Julius Bär add campaign and they were chosen to be sponsored by the bank, joined together by one commitment: excellence.

Even Jaeger-LeCoultre, the luxury watch manufacturer, in 2011 celebrated the anniversary of their product Reverso (released in 1931) by a special edition with a handmade strap made by this craftmen family. Fagliano’s name is getting more recognized through their excellence day by day and their acceptance is growing steadily worldwide.

The Founder of POLO+10, Thomas Wirth, was able to speak with Eduardo Fagliano, who kindly answered some of our questions:

What do you think that is the key factor that makes Fagliano boots so special? Do you believe it is the quality, the expertise that has endured for more than 100 years, the materials you use….or maybe your (very) singular customers?
Fagliano started with the arrival from Italy of my great grandparents, and, here, in Hurlingham, Buenos Aires, we have been working since 1892, so its more than 120 years of experience. I believe the key factor is the material selection. We always are very thorough in selecting the best quality to make every pair, according to what our clients expect and, of course, by accomplishing to make the whole process by hand, that also ensures the best quality.

What do you and your family feel when a special client crosses your doors? You are famous to have handcrafted boots for royalty, celebrities, top polo players… There must be some nervousness still when you get their visit!
It is such a great experience every time we get a special visit, and we are really touched by it, and it is a reminder of the recognition that we have accomplished through all these years. Nevertheless, we believe that all clients should be treated like kings, and we bear that in mind always.

Which is the most singular pair of boots you had to make by request?
Well, we sure had a lot… some of them include embroidering in leather club logos, monograms, initials, but there’s always a new challenge coming up!

You are three generations working at the same time, in the same workshop, a family setting a honest example of tradition and passion about what they do. Which do you think were they key factors in your upbringing that made you feel the exact same passion your ancestors did?
We’ve been visiting the workshop ever since we were small kids, as our father did (he was born right here), and through watching our family work, we could experience how passionately they worked, thinking about how rewarding it was to do something that would be received by the client with deep affection. We started learning since early age, the very first steps, cutting the leather, or pinning nails everywhere, small tasks that gave us the possibility to learn the job, though you can never finish the learning process, there is always something new to discover. Our mentors always were open to our new ideas, because we always had the same goal: do our best, and keep on excelling the final product.

We know that you studied some engineering too. Did you ever think of starting a separate project or you just felt that more knowledge would complement your craft?
I have studied Mechanical Engineering in the Universidad Tecnológica Nacional for four years, but I have not finished it. Nonetheless, I was able to expand my knowledge in that years, that absolutely complemented my work here at the shop.

For the future, which are your expectations for the business?
Our will for the future is to continue with our quality standards, without rushing but also without stopping the progress. We sure hope our future generations, if they want, and God willing, keep the work with the same passion and dedication that we transmit to them.

And last question, how do you feel about Polo becoming more and more popular these days, do you feel it will lose its “élite sport” essence?
There is a special attraction to polo, and it was always that way. Nowadays, it is easier to start practicing it since amateur levels, the Polo fever has spread widely and it is easier to contact people that are involved in the sport and get you into it. I personally believe that the “elite sport” concept refers more specifically to put always first the principles of purity, quality and excellence in every aspect of polo. From our place in the polo world, we support that principles and hope that people keep working to keep that essence.

“Keep the essence”, “purity” and “excellence”, three adjectives that Eduardo Fagliano used for describing polo, unintentionally described the work that he and his family have been doing for so long. The Faglianos certainly know what polo is about, and live up to every aspect of it, in every pair of boots they make with such care and passion.

Casa Fagliano is specialized in shoe manufacturing, specifically adapted to horse riding or country activities. The result is an “almost everlasting” product. The best leather, the best thread, also the best soles and the use of certain tools for manufacturing, together with the most detailed production process, gives as a result an superior product that stands by itself.

History of the Fagliano family
In 1892, Pedro and Giacomina Fagliano, Italian inmigrants, started their workshop in Hurlingham Buenos Aires. With much effort and work, their perfect craftsmanship grew famous, which spread throughout the world. Their sons, Antonio, Santiago, Pedro and José continued to run the shop. In 1924, Eduardo Alighieri arrived from Sicily, contributed with his knowledge and experience. Pedro’s son, Rodolfo, was born in 1929 and together with his two sons, Eduardo and Héctor, is nowadays running the business. They have specialized in shoe manufacturing, following the european traditions and an entirely handmade production, and also a special care of quality and detail. More than 120 years of steady experience and excellence, that cannot be overlook by any polo lover.

AlUla, a hidden treasure unveiled… and one hell of a win for Cambiaso.

Since 2019, Saudi Arabia has been issuing more tourist visas and has started to develop tourism which makes that area and its hidden ‘treasures’ more accessible to the world. Among these is an extraordinary and still quite unknown site: AlUla, in the north-west of the country, which combines natural splendors – the magic of a spectacular desert with rocks artistically sculpted by the winds – and archaeological riches which are reminiscent of those of Petra in Jordan. A site we were able to discover during the Richard Mille Desert Polo tournament and thanks to the French Agency for the Development of AlUla (Afalula).

AlUla is a site the size of Belgium. At its heart is a spectacular oasis as well as architectural treasures retracing the 7,000 years of history that the King and the Crown Prince have decided to reveal to the whole world, a rather revolutionary approach.

Incredible, little-known heritage

Afalula and its Saudi partner collaborate closely to develop this beautiful region in various sectors, including tourism, archaeology, urbanisation and sustainable architecture, agricultural development, water and energy management, the environment, infrastructure, culture, sport, botany, and training. Afalula, chaired by former foreign minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, coordinates the skills and expertise, (mainly French) at the service of this development and on behalf of the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU). Today, AlUla has a population of 50,000, which will eventually rise to 150,000, which is neither surprising nor disproportionate. Buildings rise out of the ground at incredible speed. The priority objective is however to preserve these historical and natural treasures: the Nabatean tombs (first century BC), in the same vein as this civilization has established itself on the much better-known site of Petra in Jordan 400 kilometers away, the Dadan and Lihyan kingdoms (first millennium BC) as well as the prehistoric remains.

The horse will have a large place in the project, as it does in the Arab civilization. Antoine Sinniger, director of the Afalula equestrian project, manages this activity on the French side with the Royal Commission for AlUla. Two equestrian villages will be built on the site: one, a culture center around a Horse Museum primarily dedicated to the Arabian horse, and another, a sports center that can host major show jumping, endurance and polo events. Competitions in respective disciplines already exist on the site and the best polo player of all time, the legendary Argentine Adolfo Cambiaso, is an ambassador of AlUla and has been coming to play with his Dolfina Team in demonstration on the desert sand since the beginning of the project as part of one of the major operations to promote the site.

For tourists, even before the site fully develops, even in a reasonable way, visiting AlUla currently remains a privileged escapade, far from the crowds of Petra. The hotel accommodation is already top-of-the-range and well-integrated into nature. And let’s not forget Maraya, the incredible cultural center, a palace of glass and mirrors set in the middle of the desert, reflecting its sandy and rocky backdrop. It hosts several events and concerts, including one by the Paris Opera, which we were able to attend.

Polo in AlUla: the Cambiaso Garden

In Palermo, La Dolfina’s shirts are emblazoned with the “Saudi AlUla” logo – quite a significant sponsor. Invited since 2020 to orchestrate the Richard Mille Desert Polo tournament, Adolfo Cambiaso has firmly established himself in AlUla’s equestrian project. He has become Saudi Arabia’s Mr Polo. In 2020, at the very first edition, he came with his La Dolfina players (Stirling, Nero and McDonough) to play a first arena tournament on local horses. This year, after selling around forty horses from his La Dolfina stud, which were used in the tournament, he brought an ‘extended family’: the 2023 La Dolfina team with his son Poroto, Pablo McDonough, the ambassador for the main tournament sponsor Richard Mille, and a few professional friends such as Alejandro Novillo Astrada and Polo Ralph Lauren muse Nacho Figueras, and the La Dolfina girls: Mia, his daughter, Lia Salvo and Nina Clarkin – all world-class female players. And let’s not forget the patrons such as Melissa Ganzi, David Paradise, Lila Pearson, and Nicky Sen. In short, the organization was 100% La Dolfina, with the addition of a few local players, mainly royal highnesses of the region.

Of course, in the end it was Cambiaso who won under the colors of Team Saudia, along with Nigerian Sayuu Dantana and American Melissa Ganzi. Incidentally, the team won the final by a score of 9-4 against the Richard Mille team led by its former team-mate from La Dolfina and now opponent at La Natividad, Pablo McDonough. It was the perfect scenario, with the two 10-handicap teams going head-to-head, Cambiaso undoubtedly a little more motivated and, above all, very well assisted in attack by the excellent Sayuu Dantana.

But the most important victory for Cambiaso was the cooperation contract he signed at the end of the tournament with The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU). The respective press release states, “The agreement lays the technical foundation for the annual tournament’s success as well as the introduction of new events in the future”.

And further, “La Dolfina will assist RCU in the creation of a new Polo Academy in AlUla, as well as planning and executing training programs for the community, visitors, and Saudis eager to learn the sport under the watchful eye of some of the best coaches and players in the world. La Dolfina will also provide horses to take part in polo tournaments in AlUla”. A good outlet for La Dolfina breeding…

“Among the sport’s most successful teams, La Dolfina counts Adolfo Cambiaso among its star-studded line up of players. Cambiaso and his La Dolfina teammates along with technical staff will lend their extensive knowledge and experience to the expansion of polo in AlUla.

Sure to grab the attention of the global polo and sporting community, as well as KSA-based players and local equestrian fans, the new partnership marks the transformative and ambitious next stage in the growth of the sport, and desert polo in particular.

As AlUla aims to solidify its role as the leading winter destination for equestrian tournaments, the new strategic collaboration with La Dolfina will super-charge the introduction of robust technical developments, attracting players, teams, enthusiasts, and more to AlUla and its rapidly evolving landscape of facilities and purpose-built infrastructure such as the equestrian Al Fursan Village.

Members of the La Dolfina staff will provide high-level advisory, technical and professional assistance to AlUla’s polo community while also encouraging participation in the sport, increasing capabilities, and helping to establish new economic opportunities.

The new agreement comes with numerous benefits for equestrian and heritage sports in AlUla (and for Cambiaso, editor’s note!) supporting the promotion of deep-rooted cultural traditions around horses in KSA; expanding tourism into new markets with a sophisticated and dedicated audience of global fans; generating new avenues of economic development for the community; and engaging local people to foster a sense of pride and positive participation in AlUla’s regeneration”.

In short, a gigantic project which, in addition to the construction of a 400-stall stable on the site, will see the creation of two grass polo fields… quite a challenge in the desert. But one thing’s for sure: this agreement is another great victory for Adolfo Cambiaso, not only the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) on the polo field, but also in the polo business! Let’s face it, polo at AlUla is Cambiaso’s backyard.

Polo great Adolfo Cambiaso makes U.S. Snow Polo debut at this week‘s St. Regis World Snow Polo Championship

ASPEN, Colo., December 12, 2023—For the first time in the 11-year history of the St. Regis World Snow Polo Championship, the world‘s greatest polo player will compete.

Adolfo Cambiaso will join fellow 10-goaler Juan Martin Nero among a star-studded field for the Dec. 14-17 event.

Cambiaso will be making his U.S. snow polo debut in the only snow polo tournament held in North America. He has competed on snow in Argentina

Cambiaso and Nero are coming off the final of the 130th Argentine Open at Palermo where their La Dolfina Saudi team lost to La Natividad, 13-10, in the final.

Cambiaso, born in Canuelas, Argentina, is ranked at 10 goals in Argentina, United Kingdom and United States at age 48. He has been ranked 10 since 1994. Since then he has won prestigious tournaments all over the world.

Cambiaso has won 18 Argentine Opens, 14 Hurlingham Opens, nine Tortugas Opens, nine U.S. Opens and eight British Opens. In 2000 he founded La Dolfina, which turned into a legendary team.

Nero, regarded as the best back in the sport, was born in Trenque Lauquen, Argentina. He made his Argentine Open debut in 2004 and since then has built an impressive resume. He is rated 10 goals in Argentina and the U.S.

Nero has won 12 Argentine Opens, 10 Hurlingham Opens, nine Tortugas Opens, two U.S. Opens and two British Opens as well as the Gold Cup Deauville in France, the Gold Cup in Sotogrande, Spain, Snow Polo World Cup in St. Moritz, Switzerland and Queen’s Cup in the UK.

Cambiaso will join Marc Ganzi and Jason Crowder on the 17-goal Aspen Valley team. Nero will play on defending champion Blade & Bow, an 18-goal team, with Scott Wood and Pablo Spinacci.

The snow polo event is one of the world‘s top snow polo tournaments and final stop on the World Polo Tour.

For the eleventh consecutive year, Aspen Valley Polo Club owners Melissa and Marc Ganzi will host the world-class event which has joined St. Moritz as one of the world‘s top snow polo tournaments and one of Aspen‘s major international sporting events and social event.

The festivities begin Thursday with the draw party and traditional champagne sabering at the St. Regis.

Preliminary qualifying round robin games are Friday at Aspen Valley Polo Club‘s state-of-the-art indoor arena beginning at 1:30 p.m .

Action moves to Rio Grande Park on Saturday where the High Alpine Cup at 1:15 p.m., inaugural Potamkin Charity Chukker at 2:30 p.m. and Celebrity Polo Match at 3:15 p.m. will be held. On Sunday the championship final is 1 p.m. and Aspen Cup at 3 p.m. followed by the awards ceremony.

VIP tickets can still be purchased for the event. Ticket information can be found at aspenvalleypoloclub.com. The games are free for spectators standing around the arena sidelines. The event is a fundraiser for the Aspen Valley Hospital Foundation. Donations are welcome.

The new POLO+10 WORLD is published

In the past polo season, some dreams of passionate players came true – among others in Zurich, Berlin, Cortina or Aspen, while others were shattered.

During the final editorial touches for the current issue of POLO+10, which you are holding in your hands right now, one quote in particular stuck in my mind. It’s from the Italian ex-banker, artist and visionary Gian Franco Brignone, who died in January and whose work we commemorate from page 78 onwards: “I have given my life for my dreams and my dreams have given me life.”

Isn‘t it a wonderful thing to have dreams in life? To hold on to previously unfulfilled dreams and goals even as we grow older – and to try to make them come true with passion and dedication? And even if we still don‘t succeed: At the end of life, we regret above all what we have NOT done; what we have NOT tried …

In this context, I find the tips from mental coach trainer Kristin Grube very inspiring: She advises us from page 44 onwards, for example, that we should internalise our goals and write them down in a kind of diary. Claire Tomlinson has definitely fulfilled many of her big dreams and goals: from page 70 we remember the icon of international polo and the first woman in the world to achieve a handicap of +5.

I hope you enjoy looking back at wonderful highlights of the past season – such as the Patrons Cup 2021 from Polo Park Zurich or the Italia Polo Challenge in Cortina – and I wish you with all my heart that you will succeed in making one of your still unfulfilled dreams come true in the coming season.

Extreme Polo League (XPL) starts in September

An eventually world wide polo league is due to start in Argentina on September 21, before the start of the High Goal Season with the final at the Palermo Stadium on October 5. (By Eric Weil, Buenos Aires)

It is the Extreme Polo League (XPL) which will be administered by EBI Media Holdings Ltd founded by an Argentine, former low handicap player, Juan Zavalia. The tournament will not interfere with other major tournaments and aspires to have 10 or more stages around the world for teams of minimum 28 goal per team and minimum four handicap players.

Franchises have so far been bought by La Dolfina Polo Ranch (with Adolfo Cambiaso and his son ‘Poroto’), Ellerstina (possibly with two teams), Las Monjitas, La Aguada, La Ensenada, La Albertina and Alegria for the first two years, while USPA (US Polo Association) with an entirely US team and HPA (Hurlingham Polo Association) with a British team are also close to join.

As in Formula One motor racing, teams will earn points at each stage and at the end of the year receive money according to their position. In the first year, Zavalia says 740,000 dollars will be distributed with the money coming from sales of franchises, TV, marketing, attend-ances, etc. Some rule changes will be made to presumably make the game more dynamic and interesting to watch. Goals scored from a minimum of 80 yards will be worth double. Players can have a maximum of 12 horses per stage and teams can change players during the match.

Former NBA basketball player Pepe Sanchez is Zavalia’s partner and in charge of the financing. For next year, the sum to divide among the teams is expected to be 1,180,000 dollars. Zavalia worked for 20 years in an investment bank and was part of the Genii Capital Group when it owned the Lotus team when it was racing in Formula One from 2008 to 2014. “Something like the XPL could not have been done before when the media was only interested in the attendance at matches before writing about the sport. But now they have the backing of OTTs (Netflix).”

Colorado captures Triple Crown in World Polo League

In a wet, wild finish Colorado held off Audi for a thrilling 9-8 victory to capture the World Polo League’s Triple Crown of Polo Sunday at rain-soaked Grand Champions Polo Club.

After two rain delays in the two hour, 20-minute season finale, Colorado joins Valiente, Grand Champions and SD Farms among the inaugural 26-goal league’s tournament champions. Colorado (Rob Jornayvaz, 2, Juan Martin Zubia, 7, Jero Del Carril, 7, Adolfo Cambiaso, 10) finished the eight-team tournament undefeated at 5-0 and won $90,000 in prize money. Audi (Marc Ganzi, 2, Nic Roldan, 8, Pablo MacDonough, 10, Kris Kampsen, 6) dropped to 4-1. Both teams were making their second tournament final appearance.

Cambiaso, a field general for his three young teammates including 19-year-old Zubia, was the game and tournament Most Valuable Player. His horse, Gaita, was Grand Champions Best Playing Pony. Ganzi was awarded the Catena Play of the Day. “This was a great way to end the season,” Cambiaso said. “It’s always nice to win. I think we deserved to win.”

The start of the game was delayed 40 minutes and again with 3:51 left in the game because of heavy rain. “It was a super tough game,” Jornayvaz said. “We weren’t sure at the beginning if we were even going to be able to play. It was a battle from the beginning. It’s always awesome to have Adolfo on your team because he is always good in those clutch moments.”

With Colorado leading 9-3 at the start of the fifth chukker, Audi caught on fire, found its system and controlled the momentum in the rain. Audi rallied to score five unanswered goals in the fifth and sixth chukkers but came up short. “We thought it was all over,” said World Polo League guest commentator Pelon Stirling after Audi’s remarkable comeback.

“You want drama, you got it,” added play-by-play announcer Gus Whitelaw. “To ask for better polo than this would be greedy. The crowd is sticking around for this one, rain and all.” Heavy rain forced another delay at 3:51. Juan Olivera of Grand Champions, Robertito Zedda of Valiente and WCT Commissioner Dale Smicklas walked the entire field to make sure it was still playable and safe. The field held up well thanks to the tireless work of the Grand Champions field crew throughout the season.

Rodiseo, played by MacDonough, was named American Polo Horse Association Best Playing Pony of the game. Pizza, also played by MacDonough, was the American Polo Horse Association Best Playing Pony of the tournament.

Colorado players names will now be inscribed on the trophy and added to an impressive list of teams that feature several top players including Sebastian Merlos, Mike Azzaro, Tommy Biddle, Adam Snow, Nic Roldan, Matias Magrini, Jeff Hall, Mariano Gonzalez, Michel Dorignac and Kris Kampsen.

Co-founded by Grand Champions owners Melissa and Marc Ganzi and Valiente Polo Farm owner Bob Jornayvaz, the successful World Polo League is the only 26-goal polo in the world outside of Argentina. The WPL is preserving the highest level of polo and its rich, hallowed tradition in the U.S.
