Barrière  Deauville Polo Cup

The two most prestigious French polo teams faced each other this afternoon in the final of the Marta & Lucien Barrière Gold Cup: the team from La Baule, Brittany Polo Club and the local team, Talandracas, already six times winner of this Coupe d’Or. With two teams like these, each one having an impressive “resume”, one could only expect an exceptional final. The 2000 or so spectators were not disappointed. If, in the end, it was Brittany Polo Club who lifted the Gold Cup for the first time, further writing their history, it was above all polo that emerged as the big winner of this mythical tournament.

One could only expect a great game because beyond Deauville, these two teams are successful outside France, being the only two French teams of this century to have won the two most prestigious titles in Europe: the Queen‘s Cup at Windsor, in the royal club of Guards and the Gold Cup (British Open) at Cowdray.

Talandracas‘ iconic captain, Edouard Carmignac was presented with the Queen‘s Cup by Prince Harry in 2011. That year he played with two Argentine Open winners, Milo Fernandez Araujo and Lucas Monteverde. In 2014, he was again in the final with Polito Pieres, Juan Martin Nero and Santiago Stirling, but lost to Zacara.

After winning the Gold Cup for the first time in 2009 with Facundo and Gonzalito Pieres, Jean-François Decaux lifted the coveted British trophy again last year with a team consisting of no less than Adolfo and Poroto Cambiaso and Diego Cavanagh.

For this Gold Cup Marta & Lucien Barrière, the two finalist captains had, as usual, recruited great players: Benjamin Urquiza and Diego Cavanagh for Brittany Polo Club and Rufino Bensadon and Juan-Martin Zubia for Talandracas, who play at the highest level in Argentina, in particular in the Abierto, a world elite tournament. Winning in Deauville was therefore a matter of prestige for these great professionals, which explains their commitment on the field this afternoon in Deauville.

The game lived up to its promise and never, until the end of the third chukker, was the gap greater than 1 goal. The scoreboard showed a perfect tie (6-6) when the teams returned to the field after the half time. It was then that Brittany took off to take a 3-goal advantage. But it was not over yet thanks to the genius of Rufino Bensadon, who brought back the game on his own. His opponent Benjamin Urquiza scored again (10-9). However, that wasn‘t the end of the story as Rufino Bensadon had the equaliser at the end of a 60-yard penalty with just seconds to go… yet the ball went just wide of the posts leaving Brittany victorious.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game and that the score would be close,“ said champagne-covered Diego Cavanagh. We went into the last chukker with a three-goal lead, which is always good at this stage of a game. But then Rufino Bensadon put on a real show, he was unstoppable when he went off dribbling the ball and scored three goals that made us having doubts. He‘s an incredible player, full of talent, very quick, almost impossible to ride-off. He was on fire in that last chukker, he put Talandracas back in the game yet fortunately it ended well for us.”

In these very close games, it is often the horses that make the difference and it was indeed a mare ridden by Diego in the last chukker that was crowned best Argentine pony of the final: „DS Soprano is a mare of Benjamin Urquiza, that he gave me in the last chukker in exchange for one of mine. The mare is very easy to handle, very explosive“.  A winning exchange! Tomorrow, Diego, Soprano, their teammates and their opponents will leave for Chantilly to prepare for the Engel & Völkers French Open, a tournament of the same level, but with sixteen teams and after this performance in Deauville, Brittany Polo Club is now one of the favourites: „First of all, we‘ll celebrate this victory this evening as we should, savouring the fact of having won this tournament and we‘ll wait until tomorrow to start thinking about the French Open.“ Following this Diego, like most of the protagonists of these tournaments, will fly to Argentina to prepare for the biggest event of the season: the Triple Crown.

The doors of the Deauville International Polo Club closed on this beautiful game which is perfectly in line with the legend of the Marta & Lucien Barrière Gold Cup. A particularly successful season both from a sporting point of view and in terms of attendance. Deauville is a place where people learn to love polo.

We had to wait until the very last minutes of this „semi-final“ between Barrière and Brittany Polo Club to know the finalists of the 2022 Marta and Lucien Barrière Gold Cup. It will be a battle between the two biggest French teams, the only ones to have won, in this 21st century, the British Gold Cup (Brittany Polo Club) and the Queen‘s Cup (Talandracas), the two most prestigious titles outside Argentina

The two big powerful teams of Sunday‘s final were nevertheless greatly challenged by a smaller team, the winner of the Silver Cup: Barrière, whose captain Isabelle Larenaudie was making her first appearance at this level. The team she formed with the Zavaleta family came very close to being a spoilsport today. If they had won, all three teams would have had to go battle it out in a shoot-out: the famous penalty shots where nerves often play the main role. Brittany Polo Club’s men didn‘t want to go through that. The team in black was held up from start to finish by the Zavelatas, who were all very inspired and never let go of their opponents! Most of the time, the gap between the two teams was only one goal. Sometimes two. At the end of the game, Ramiro Zavaleta put the two teams back on the same level with a magnificent and intelligent goal and it took a great Diego Cavanagh to snatch the victory with a few seconds left on the clock scoring his only goal of the game! The Zavaleta‘s disappointment was sad to witness at the prize-giving ceremony, but this fine team still leaves Deauville with the Silver Cup and high hopes for the upcoming French Open.

See you on Sunday at 5.30 p.m. to know the outcome of this beautiful edition of the Gold Cup… and on Saturday at the same time for the Bronze Cup whose finalists will be known tomorrow.

The first two winners of the Barrière Deauville Polo Cup 2022 are known: the Luxembourg team Augustinus Bader for the Ladies Cup and Barrière for the venerable Silver Cup. On the women‘s part, this final was a remake of the tournament‘s opening game: same opponents, same exact verdict: 8 to 4 ½

Led by Lia Salvo, Augustinus Bader, the team already held all the information to overcome GCA Group, whose game is very physical yet the Luxembourg team decided to play it differently. Thanks to their strong horse string, they were able to play a game of small passes and escape from the pack thanks to the speed and handling ability of their ponies. This was the second title for Lia Salvo, already a winner in Deauville in 2018, as was her father in the Gold Cup in 1986! Lia Salvo was of course nominated most valuable player of the final and the tournament. But a game is never won alone and one of Lia’s strengths is to use the best qualities of her teammates. A plan that revealed the talent of the young Paloma Lauro (15 years), very efficient in the attack.

The other final of the day, the Silver Cup, offered the public some great battles, spectacular and fast actions, an open play, a great show, in short, great polo. Martin Aguerre, who substituted for Juan-Gris Zavaleta, who just had a child, quickly found his bearings with the Zavalata brothers and after being noticeably dominated at the beginning of the game, Barriere took the score board from the second chukker to finish the fourth with a comfortable lead: 8 to 4 ½. That‘s when Mungo, in the fifth, began a stunning remontada… yet they ended up missing victory by just half a goal. It was a great start for Isabelle Larenaudie who played this level for the first time! She even scored a goal which turned out to be important for the final score: 8 to 7 ½.

After these first two beautiful finals, it‘s time for the Marta and Lucien Barrière Gold Cup on Monday 15th August (17H00) with a first game for the Diane Barrière Desseigne Trophy which promises to be a remake of the 2021 final, between the title holder, Dragones and Mungo.

Deauville, land of polo! Since the middle of the last century, it has been an immutable tradition to cross the track of the Deauville – La Touques racecourse to attend high-level polo games during August. An event that combines both glamour and sport: the Deauville Int. Polo Cup will welcome some of the world‘s best players from August 6 to 28 for the Barrière Deauville Polo Cup 2022.

This year’s Barrière Deauville Polo Cup offers four tournaments, including the 71st edition of the mythical Gold Cup, one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world, the most disputed French competition that has seen all the outstanding players of this sport participate in. Legendary players who have played or won the mythical Argentine Open (el Abierto de Palermo), the ultimate tournament that every player dreams of winning and that takes place in a specially dedicated stadium in the heart of Buenos Aires in front of an audience of 18,000 spectators. A victory in the Gold Cup in Deauville is also an important reference in the record of these great champions (from August 15 to 28).

This year, these champions are called Diego Cavanagh (Brittany Polo), a handicap 9 who was seen last year in the great team of La Dolfina alongside Adolfo Cambiaso ; Rufino Bensadon (h7), who has grown up since his first international steps in Deauville and who competed in the Abierto in the colors of Chapaleufu II and who will play this year in Deauville in the grey and pink jersey of Talandracas alongside Juan-Martin Zubia (h8), who was in Palermo with La Ensenada. The new French team Tedelou relies on the Zavaleta family, brothers Simon and Ramiro and their cousin Juan-Gris (h8) who, in Palermo last December, also played for Chapaleufu II. Los Dragones, the title holders, will once again rely on Jota Chavanne (h5) as well as new team member Rodrigo Andrade (h8), who played the Abierto 2021 for La Dolfina Brava with Poroto Cambiaso. As for Mungo, Patrick Eisensteter renews his confidence in Pierre-Henri Ngoumou, the French handicap 6, and in the Argentine Tete Storni (h5), who won the title of Argentine Pato Champion (the original version of horse-ball) also in Palermo!

In addition to the much sought-after Gold Cup, the Barrière Deauville Polo Cup is organizing three other tournaments during the month of August: the Silver Cup (from 6 to 14 August), the Ladies Cup (from 10 to 13 August) and the Bronze Cup, which plays at a lower level, but is also highly coveted (from 15 to 27 August)! In short, a full program offering one to three daily games.

Ramiro Zavaleta (left) under the Barrière colours, will return this year to defend the jersey of a new French team, Tedelou, alongside his brother, Simon and his cousin, the h7 Juan-Gris, as well as the captain Isabelle Larenaudie. The Deauville International Polo Club loves the public and is a space open to all. Thus, access to the games is entirely free during the week. Only the finals and the weekend games are subject to a fee. Spectators are welcomed in a friendly village where it is possible to linger after the games, have a drink or do a little shopping in the stalls and even meet the players who are always accessible and eager to share their passion for their sport.

And to attract its public, polo knows how to get out of its confines and into the streets with the traditional parades through town on the eve of the finals, beach polo sessions at low tide or adorable demonstration games of kids-polo, where children on their ponies show their skills just before the finals.

Hence great sport but also an immersion into a welcoming milieu: when you stay in Deauville or in its marvelous surroundings of the Pays d‘Auge, a day at polo is a must and above all, a great moment of joy!

Polo is an institution in Deauville. It has been played in the centre of the racecourse since 1880 and since 1950 it has been the venue for one of the most prevalent tournaments in the world: the famous Coupe d‘Or, which starts this year on 14 August and ends on 29 August. Taking part in such a competition, the highest international level played in France, requires the teams to be very well prepared. This is why they will compete in „friendly games“ from 8 August when the Deauville International Polo Club will open its doors to the public.

Yet there will be already some competition from 12 August when three women‘s teams will compete in the Ladies Polo Cup, with the final to be played on 14 August. Women‘s polo is expanding rapidly throughout the world and Deauville is no exception to this phenomenon. And on the field, the women are as fierce as the men!

From 14 August onwards, all eyes will turn towards the men‘s polo. There will be one question on everyone’s mind: who will win the 71st edition of the legendary Coupe d’Or  (Gold Cup) that nearly every great player in the history of polo has won since 1950? This year, six very competitive teams will throw their hat into the ring.

Amongst the participants, there are no less than five players of Argentine Open level or Copa Camara winners, including a certain Camilo ‚Jeta‘ Castagnola (8), a gifted member of the young Argentine generation, who is the Talandracas’ headliner alongside Tomas Beresford (7), winner of the last French Open and of the 2021 Queen‘s Cup. The two French 6-goalers, Pierre-Henri N‘Goumou and Brieuc Rigaux will face each other, already promising some spectacular actions. The French Pommeray HM Polo team also looks very strong with the return of “little” Rufino Bensadon, who has grown since he last was in Deauville in 2018 and is now handicap 7, alongside Juan-Gris Zavaleta (7), both winners of the Copa Camara. Martin Aguerre (7), also a Copa Camara winner (2018) and a player in the Argentine Triple Crown, will be looking to lead Barrière to a second win in this tournament they claimed in 2014.

With such an array of great players, it is impossible to predict which team will succeed the Spanish team Marques de Riscal, holders of this Gold Cup title after a superb final last year against the Barrière team. Deauville’s most loyal team, Édouard Carmignac‘s Talandracas, will be looking for a seventh victory in this Gold Cup, which would constitute an absolute record.

Beyond this top-level sport, the program of this year’s Barrière Deauville Polo Cup offers other events: more polo, of course, with the Bronze Cup, some games of which will be played on the field of the Dozulé racecourse; beach polo, on Monday 9th August at 4.30 pm; the parade of the teams in the streets of Deauville on 28th August. In the mornings, before 9am, one can watch the polo horses being trained on the beach, an always very beautiful and photogenic moment. Last but not least, it is always a good idea to linger – before or after the games – in the polo village to shop at the Maison Décalé store or to taste the famous Mojitos from the Brok Café (in moderation of course) and maybe toast with the players!

The famous Barrière Deauville Polo Cup, and in particular its legendary Gold Cup, is a must-see on the international circuit. The Deauville International Polo Club and its legendary grounds in the heart of the Deauville-La Touques racecourse, where polo was already played at the end of the 19th century, are definitely part of the polo world heritage. Like every year, four tournaments will be played there from August 7 to 29.

In Argentina, the land of polo, Deauville is as much talked about as Palm Beach, Windsor, Cowdray and Sotogrande, major tournaments outside of Argentina every player wants to add to their name. We remember the words of Facundo Pieres, winner of the Argentinian Open, who, winning for the first time in Deauville in 2009 with André Fabre‘s team (In The Wings), basically said: “at least that‘s done!” Most of the world’s greatest players have added this win to their record, starting with Adolfo Cambiaso, arguably the best player of all time. He was 19 then and is 46 now and still remains the world No. 1.

This year, in the Gold Cup, there will be at least five players of handicap 7 or more, who will play in Deauville before flying off to the great Argentine season via Chantilly:

Martin Aguerre Jr (Arg, Barrière), winner of the Copa Camara, Tommy Beresford(Chi, Talandracas) finalist of the Copa Camara, Juan-Gris Zavaleta (Arg, Le Pommeray), a regular of the Argentine Open alongside Rufino Bensadon (Arg, 17 years old), again a winner of the Copa Camara and recent winner of the Prince of Wales Trophy in England where he was awarded MVP of the final. The public of Deauville knows him well as they have seen him win the Gold Cup in 2018. Last, but not least, one of the three young phenomena of Argentine polo, Camilo Castagnola(Talandracas), also 17 years old and already handicap 8 (9 even in Argentina), semi-finalist of the Argentine Open last year. He alone can put on a great show!

The other three teams in this Golden Cup have rather bet on balance by entering players with more homogeneous handicaps (4, 5 and 6). Among them are the two best French handicaps 6: Pierre Henri N’Goumou (Mungo) and Brieuc Rigaux(Britanny Polo). Los Dragones, led by French new talent Sam Sztarkman, will have three Argentinian players with handicap 5. Six beautiful teams that will be seen again in September in the French Open.

Most of these teams will have previously „warmed up“ in the Silver Cup, a title (almost) no less prestigious, which will kick off on August 7, thus opening the Deauville 2021 season (final on August 15). On the 11th, it will be the women’s turn to play with the Ladies Cup.

The Bronze Cup will start on August 16, at the same time as the Gold Cup. Eight teams are engaged in this tournament highlighting French players.

Despite the prestige of these competitions, the ambition of the Deauville International Polo Club is to be resolutely open and it does everything in its power to welcome as many people as possible. This is why access to the games, in Deauville, but also in Dozulé where the picturesque and charming field will reopen this year, is completely free during the week. Tickets are only needed for the finals and the weekend games.

The public is welcomed in a friendly village where it is possible to linger after the games, have a drink or do some shopping, such as in the MAISON DÉCALÉ store for example, and even meet the always affable players.

Side events are also part of the program, such as the traditional parades in town on the eve of the finals, beach-polo sessions at low tide or kids-polo exhibition games at the opening of the finals.

There is not a more festive and more „simple“ place to discover and tame the oldest team sport than in Deauville in August and therefore it is not to be missed!

Le Deauville International Polo Club, the place to be in August !

The Deauville International Polo Club and his tournaments organized in August make part of the worldwide polo heritage. For The Telegraph, the Barrière Deauville Polo Cup is the second-ranked of the “twelve stylish events that should be on every socialite’s bucket list” after the Jazz Festival of Montreux! This event is back in August with three main tournaments, including the prestigious Gold Cup much coveted by European team captains and great Argentine professionals.

Ladies first… A rich program that starts with the Ladies Polo Cup on August 7. A growing female tournament with a rising level of play (1 4-goal handicaps are attributed to expert female players). A very international tournament, as four countries were represented in 2018 and the defending champion, No. 1 very charismatic Argentine player Lia Salvo will be there to defend his trophy with her French team-mates of the Brok café team.

The final match is held on Saturday, August 1 0, kick-off day of the 70th edition of the legendary Gold Cup (14/16 goals). It’s one of the most important international tournaments featuring the sport’s finest players: the Cambiaso, Pieres, Gracida, Heguy, Ulloa, Caset and Bensadon – father and son – families, defending champions that enchanted the public last year in Deauville. The final match is held on August 25 this year.

The best French professionals are awaited for this prestigious tournament, and even more of them for the Bronze Cup (6-8 goals, on August 1 4-23). During this tournament, the public often attends epic challenges as there’s nothing more important in the career of a French polo players than winning a title in Deauville.

Polo matches in Deauville are unique experiences lived in a special atmosphere. Here, the public and the players meet after the prize- awarding ceremony in a large cosy and friendly area where they can have a drink and talk about the most thrilling moments of the match! Enjoy a pleasant atmosphere and don’t forget to take selfies! Sometimes, polo leaves the Deauville – La Touques racecourse and heads to the beach of Deauville, where Beach Polo demonstrations are held at low tide. It’s the opportunity for holidaymakers to discover how this noble sport can become accessible to them, as they can finally approach these strong horses with a gold personality! In the morning, horses are seen in groups led by petiseros (Argentine horse trainers) that ensure the physical preparation of horses on the seaside.

Polo can also be played at a young age in France: several polo clubs and equestrian centres now include a Polo Pony Club. A major national championship for children is held in Lamotte-Beuvron in June. The Deauville International Polo Club organizes a few Kids Polo exhibition matches in which children ride Shetland ponies: they are adorable! On the day before and in the morning of final matches (August 10 and 24), traditional team parades are welcomed in the streets of Deauville. In a few words, the oldest team sport is celebrated in an emblematic place. It’s an unmissable stylish event, as reported by The Telegraph!

Thomas Wirth, CEO POLO+10: “Deauville is one of the most outstanding polo destinations in Europe and the POLO+10 team will of course try to attend the polo highlights at the Deauville International Polo Club in August.”

The Barrière  Deauville Polo Cup has its first two winners: the Ladies Polo Cup and the Silver Cup. Two gripping finals: superb horse-riding, magnificent horses and a beautiful sports show. And this festival of polo is far from over since as from tomorrow the Gold and the Bronze Cups will start playing

Ladies Polo Cup
During this “ladies final”, all eyes were on the young 30 year-old professional player, Lía Salvo, handicap 9 and no.1 world lady player in the latest World Polo Tour ranking. Salvo is not an unknown name in Deauville because in 1974, the father and coach of Lía, Hector Salvo, won the mythical Gold Cup with the Cabaneros alongside the h10 player Hector Merlos. But a polo match is not won by just one player and if Lía was able to lift the ladies’ trophy last Saturday, it is thanks to the team that she built around her over the matches, motivating and raising the level of her amateur teammates: Margaux Perruchot and Marguerite Percheron, very present on the field as well as the young Adèle Renauldon, decisive in defense which did not prevent her from opening the score. There were some moments of nervousness when, at 4-2 in the fourth chukka, the opposing players of the Charlo team obtained a penalty but the French no.1 player, Caroline Anier failed to transform it. The relief was even more palpable when Marguerite Percheron scored a fifth goal for Brok Café.
This victory is also that of an Argentinian horse breeding farm run by Jorge Musso, in General Levalle, in the province of Cordoba: eight of the sixteen horses of the winning team came from there and were all trained by Dario, the son of Jorge Musso, handicap 6, former winner of the Gold Cup and who will play as from this week in the Bronze Cup. Three of the four players were riding horses from this horse breeding farm. But the “blanket” for the best horse was awarded that day to a thoroughbred, a racehorse retrained in another discipline. A process encouraged and organized by the Association “Beyond the racetracks” whose president, Elizabeth Doumen, handed the blanket to Catharos, a 10-year-old chestnut by Limnos that Adèle Renauldon had bought from a….. horse-ball player. A double successful retraining.

Silver Cup
The spectators will take away from the 2018 Silver Cup final, this Sunday afternoon, the incredible performance of the young Argentinian player Rufino Bensadon, who will be 17 at the end of the year and who scored in particular an extraordinary golazo, at a crazy speed, right out in the front and with everyone else behind him On the pitch, he enjoyed the irreplaceable father-son complicity with Pancho, h8 today, but a former h9 and semi-finalist in the Argentinian Open: “Rufino will move up to 5 in September and I will move down to 7, we’ll soon meet” jokes the father who is doing everything possible so that his son reaches the 10 handicap that his talent deserves. However, playing against them were heavy hitters including the “Argentinian Open” duo: Fran Elizalde – Tito Guinazu, a combined handicap of 15 between them.
The difference in the final score was narrow, 7-6, but it was clearly the “young” Rufino who allowed his captain, André Fabre, to win the trophy for the fifth time, a record for the Silver Cup.
There is no rider without a great horse, but also, no great horse without a great rider! And so it is (almost obviously) an Argentine mare, the impressive gray Lucifeta, ridden by Rufino Bensadon, who won the blanket for the best horse in the final.
Progression In The Wings: 2/1 – 4/3 – 5/4 – 6/5 – 7/6

Gold Cup
André Fabre and In The Wings have an opportunity to win the French Triple Crown, a trilogy that ends with the Chantilly Open de France on September 16 next. Before that, his team will have to win the Gold Cup which starts on Wednesday. That is by no means a foregone conclusion.
An even more competitive event with six teams playing: Talandracas, but also the team led by the president of the Deauville Polo Club, Jean-Edouard Mazery, Barrière (with Tito Guinazu and the spectacular Tete Storni). The Deauville public will naturally focus on the 100% French team led by Nicolas Desjouis, Outsiders, with the brothers Clément and Mathieu Delfosse alongside Patrick Paillol.
The Bronze Cup, with a lower level, will be played at the same time. It also  promises to be a great competition with five teams playing, mixing great Argentinian pros such as Dario Musso or Diego Braun with the best French players like the handicap 5 Patrick Paillol or the young player in the French team who will participate in the next European Championship in September, in Italy, Louis Jarrige.

Polo every day: one or two matches from tomorrow until the finals on August 25 (Bronze Cup) and August 26 (Gold Cup), with free entry on weekdays, € 10 on weekends and €20 for each of the finals
