Twenty years after their first and only victory until today, Talandracas wins the 22nd edition of the Engel & Völkers French Open in a magnificent way. A final as great as this magical tournament that offered throughout eighteen days one fabulous game after the other, especially since the quarter finals where no misstep was allowed. This Open ends with the triumph of a mythical team, Talandracas, of a fabulous mare, Peregrino La Banda „Bandita“ and of a rising star, Juan-Martin Zubia. It is almost sad to see this extraordinary tournament come to an end

Before getting into the details of this final, it is important to applaud the work of the club, and in particular its director and polo manager, Philippe Perrier. It is thanks to them that the Open de France Engel & Völkers has now found its place as one of the three biggest tournaments in Europe. Proof of this is the number of teams engaged (16) and the amount of the top 40 players (11) within these formations. All of which were unanimous in their appreciation of the welcome, the quality of the organisation and the grounds.

In front of a record 2,000 spectators, the final taking place on „Honneur 1“ offered a great game that Talandracas immediately took control of without really worrying about Los Dragones, who seemed to be a bit stunned by what was at stake. The Chantilly team never had the opportunity to put pressure on the Deauville team, which immediately broke away and had a seven-goal lead at the end of the last chukker. The key to this domination was the incredible understanding between the two young Argentinian players from Talandracas, Rufino Bensadon (handicap 4) and Juan Martin Zubia (handicap 6). With notably an incredible neck shot from more than 80 yards on the right side of the goal, he was unmistakably named most valuable player: „Contrary to appearances, it wasn‘t an easy victory,“ Zubia stressed. They were a little slow at the beginning, but afterwards it was a hard fight. They were a complicated team that had won all their games in the qualifying phase, which was not the case for us, and we were prepared for a tough final. Our strength was that our team has grown stronger since Deauville as did my understanding with Rufino with each game. In the end, we understood each other perfectly. But Huguito (Hugues Carmignac) and Edouard have also raised their game since the beginning of August and helped us a lot in this victory.“ The young Argentinean, who is part of the exceptional rising generation of his country, discovered this Open de France Engel & Völkers for the first time: „It is a great tournament, very competitive. Every game was won by one or two goals… even if it wasn‘t the case today, I don‘t know what happened, but it‘s really a very high-level tournament.”

If Zubia was logically crowned MVP, Hugues Carmignac was named best amateur player of this final: „… out of three amateur players, not so bad“, he commented ironically although he was very happy to have won this title with his father, author of a decisive back allowing Bensadon to score a goal: „It is a very emotional moment. This game should have been more complicated than that because we had four very good players on the other side, I don‘t know what happened with them, but from the beginning of the game, our team worked very well. When we arrived in Deauville at the beginning of August, we didn‘t know each other that well and by playing together, the team built itself up and arrived particularly well prepared for this final.”

Talandracas‘ addition to the French Open‘s list of winners is a very nice addition to the history of this increasingly prestigious tournament. Talandracas is indeed the French team with the greatest record: six Gold Cups in Deauville, a Queen‘s Cup and now a second Open de France

FRENCH WOMEN'S OPEN: QUEEN HAZEL

England‘s Hazel Jackson and Rebecca Walters did not miss their moment by leading their team Rouge Absolu Paris to victory in the 12th French Women‘s Open against France’s team DS Automobile 3F. However, the doyenne of world polo, Caroline Anier, gave it her all and fought like hell to hold off the English. Her all-French team had the potential to do well against the British but Hazel Jackson was everywhere, winning 80% of the duels and sending Rebecca Walters, named MVP of this final, to the goal.

The last final of the day, the Castel Trophy, concluded this beautiful day with a victory for the Audaz team in a game just as tight and exciting as those offered to us by this memorable Open de France 2022

With the French Open Engel & Völkers barely over, the team at Chantilly Polo Club is already looking ahead to the 2023 season. A 23rd French Open, of course, which will certainly be of the same importance as this 22nd edition of this internationally well-established tournament. This success does not however prevent innovation and, in the Olympic spirit of Paris 2024, the French Polo Federation (FFP) and the Chantilly Polo Club have proposed to the International Polo Federation (FIP) the creation of a Polo Nations Cup. Of which we will see next June so stay tuned, a press release with the details of this new competition will be sent to you soon!

Top European and international polo in Chantilly

The Engel & Völkers French Open, under the umbrella of the French Polo Federation, brings together fourteen top-level teams over three weeks. Seventeen intense days where the Polo Club du Domaine de Chantilly becomes the largest European meeting of this discipline with more than a thousand polo horses on site. A technical and eventful feat also made possible thanks to the support of clubs and sports organizations based in the Île-de-France region.

For the past three years, the Engel & Völkers French Open has taken on a new sporting dimension, becoming the most competitive polo competition in September in Europe. This year, a record number of fourteen teams will take part in the Open. Teams from Germany, Great Britain, Argentina, Switzerland, and France, who, to ensure their competitiveness, have hired top Argentinean pros, the kind of players that are seen at the end of the year in the most important tournament in the world: the Argentine Open.

This exceptional line-up bodes well for some stunning games, as is often the case in September in Chantilly. Games open to the public during the week with, in parallel, other tournaments such as the Castel Trophy (6-8 goals) or the French Women‘s Open (13 to 18 September) which, once again, attracts some of the best female players in the world. Three weeks not to be missed under any circumstances, to discover polo in a relaxed way during the week or the great event that is the day of the finals, on Sunday 18 September, with its village, food-trucks, stands and animations, which will be open from 16 September.

Last year, French team La Magdeleine triumphed in Chantilly with one of the top players of the Argentine Open, Tito Ruiz Guiñazu.

Seven Argentine Open players in Chantilly!
To defend this title, he will be joined in Chantilly by other players from the Argentine Open: Diego Cavanagh, a member of the La Dolfina team in 2021 alongside Adolfo Cambiaso, will be in Chantilly with Brittany Polo; Bautista Bayugar, 26, considered in Argentina as one of the aces of tomorrow where he has evolved within the Alegria Fish Creek team, in Chantilly he will play for Los Dragones; Juan Gris Zavaleta who played in Palermo for Chapaleufù will defend the French colours of Tedelou with his cousins Ramiro and Simon, a family team put together by Isabelle Larenaudie; Guillermo Terrera, member of La Dolfina II, will reinforce the French team Rexaline, winner of the Bourbon Trophy last May; Jero Del Carril shines in Argentina with La Ensenada, and remains faithful to Kazak in France, finalist of the 2021 French Open. In short, seven of the forty players of the 2021 Argentine Open will be in Chantilly in September!

Amanara, the team of Dutchwoman Nicky Sen, returns to Chantilly with the impressive Santiago Chavane, a brilliant player who played alongside the Heguy brothers in the mythical Indios Chapaleufù I team. In Chantilly, he will throw his son Lorenzo, 14 years old, a child prodigy, into the big games. They will be joined by their brother and uncle, Jota Chavane, with Los Dragones.

La Magdeleine will return to defend the title with Tito Ruiz Guiñazu, who shone in Palermo with Alegria Fish Creek and who will play in Chantilly alongside Facundo Llorente, who was crowned MVP of the French final. Two months later, Llorente won the coveted Copa Cámara de Diputados in Buenos Aires, the antechamber to the Argentine Open. In Chantilly, he will be up against his teammates from La Irenitafrom that great adventure: Min Podesta in the team of French captain Bruno Bensousan, La Berta, based in England, and Agustin Garcia Grossi, who will be seen in Chantilly as a pillar of the new team La Fija Sandbox, whose French captain, Arthur Madrid, comes from Argentina.

Another former winner of this Copa Cámara, Martin Aguerre Jr. remains faithful to his Swiss team Marquard Media and to his emblematic captain of the Polo Club de Chantilly, Tomas Rinderknecht.

The Berlin Polo Club seems to have taken root in the Polo de Chantilly because after the Rider Cup, we will find the German club in the Open de France Engel & Völkers with Manuel Elizalde, who also played the Copa Cámara, as a pillar. The other German team, Team Schockemöhle, has renewed its confidence in French pro Clément Delfosse, who is always very explosive on the field and who will play alongside Argentine Valentin Novillo Astrada, a member of a famous polo family, and the German No. 1, Patrick Maleitzke.

Finally, the French n°1, Pierre Henri Ngoumou, will still be the leader of the Deauville team, Mungo, with the spectacular Tete Storni, Argentinean Pato Champion (the ancestor of horse-ball), but just as formidable on a polo field.

Chantilly celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Ladies‘ Open

Eleven players at Argentinean Open level or winners of the Copa Camara, the best French players, ten teams, nine nations represented, a maharaja who is a high level sportsman because of his 2 goal handicap and more than thirty matches: the 2021 edition of the Open de France Engel & Völkers promises to be exciting once again. The Women’s Open will celebrate its tenth anniversary with six brilliant teams

With ten teams of 16 goals*, the Open de France Engel & Völkers is undoubtedly the most competitive of the international tournaments played in France and this in the largest club with its eight fields, the quality of which is unanimously appreciated by the best players in the world. This is one of the reasons why the ten team captains have once again entered eleven of these best players, big names who usually liven up the alta temporada, the Argentinean high season:

Camilo Castagnola (8 goal handicap*, Argentine Open), Tomas Beresford (7, Copa Camara 2020 finalist), Martin Aguerre (7, Argentine Open player and 2018 Copa Camara winner), Clemente and Juan-Gris Zavaleta (7, Argentine Open players and Copa Camara winners), Alejandro Muzzio, Bautista Bayugar and Tito Ruiz Guiñazu (8, 8 and 7, Argentine Open and Copa Camara), Facundo Llorente(7, Copa Camara), Jero Del Carril (7, Copa Camara) and finally, the return to Chantilly of Rufino Bensadon who last played in Apremont at the age of 16 as a 4 goaler and who returns this year at age 19 as a 7-goaler and, among other things, a Copa Camara winner (2019).

This year, the Open de France Engel & Völkers is more international than ever with nine nations represented in the ten teams: United Kingdom, Argentina, Chile, Spain, United States, France, Russia, Switzerland and India with the Maharadja of Jaipur, Prince Pacho Padmanabh Singh who will play in the Sainte-Mesme team.

France’s polo elite will be well represented, with players from the national team spread across four lineups: Pierre Henri N‘Goumou (6, Mungo), Robert Strom (5, Sainte-Mesme), Patrick Paillol (5, Kazak) and Brieuc Rigaux (6, Brittany Polo).

Women’s Open: tenth anniversary and Argentinean stars

From 14 September, the women‘s top level will be on show to compete in the tenth anniversary edition. Six well-balanced teams will battle for the 2021 title. They are built either around a strong pillar or with four players of equal level. Among the pillars, a loyal Chantilly player and title holder of the Argentine Open, Lia Salvo, handicap 9, who will cleverly lead the Maison Décalé team. Playing against La Dolfina in the 2020 final of the Abierto Feminino, Lia had faced Fatima Balzano (6); she will meet her again in Chantilly with the German team Cosmo Polo Los Floreales. Also handicap 6, British player Izzie Mc Gregor will lead the French-American team DS Automobiles DS Store Saint-Maximin. As in the Engel & Völkers Open, many nations will be represented in this Women‘s Open, five to be exact: Argentina, England, Germany, Switzerland and France with eleven players from the Polo Club de Chantilly. Among them, the three Venot sisters, holders of the title that they will defend this year under the Swiss colors of Polo Park Zürich alongside the President of the Swiss Polo Federation, Morgane van Overbroek. A team to follow and to beat! The oldest of the Venot sisters, Elena, has joined the circle of the best players in the world; handicap 6 as well, she will play the next Argentinean Open for La Ensenada.

After last year’s flamboyant twentieth anniversary edition and with this year’s tenth anniversary of the Women’s Open, the 2021 edition promises to be just as intense to experience. Whether in the peaceful atmosphere of the weekday matches, often at dusk, or in the feverishness of the weekend games and in particular the final on 19 September, where a village of stalls, food-trucks and entertainment welcomes visitors. Not forgetting the polo Fridays, where the last game of the day can be watched from the Orangerie, with a glass of champagne or Malbec in hand, while waiting for the asado (Argentinean barbecue) and the equestrian event with a few surprises on the program, such as the Compagnie équestre des Grandes Écuries de Chantilly or Mario Lurashi. Three weeks of sports and festivities.

*A team of 16 goals is made of four players whose goal handicaps add up to 16. The goal handicap corresponds to the level of the polo player (it varies between -2 and +10). The handicap evolves according to the player‘s performance in games and the progress made during the year. The highest handicap in France is 6 and in Europe 7 (England). The handicap 10 is currently held by 9 Argentinians and one Uruguayan.

The European polo highlight event! Setting the momentum of the twentieth anniversary edition

The 2020 French Open will forever remain a noteworthy classic with great teams, great organizations and exceptional Argentine players who went on to shine during the Argentine high season. The momentum seems to be continuing! So far, ten teams have already signed up for the 2021 edition of the most prestigious competition in France, the third step of the French Triple Crown.

The magic moments on the Chantilly Polo Club grounds last September, with these high-level matches, which brought together some of the best players on the international circuit, are still remembered.

Some of these great players will be back this September, starting with the young prodigy Jeta Castagnola, who has remained loyal to Edouard Carmignac’s French team Talandracas, along with Chilean-Irish Tommy Beresford, winner of the 2020 French Open and finalist in the Copa Camara last December.

So far, eight players of the Argentine “alta temporada” have already confirmed their presence.

While the entries are not yet final, the ENGEL & VÖLKERS 2021 French Open will already feature at least seven players from the great Argentinean season. Thus, in addition to Jeta Castagnola and Tommy Beresford, the public of the Open will discover Jero Del Caril (in the French team Kazak) and will see Martin Aguerre Jr (Marquard Media, SUI), Clemente Zavaleta (Sainte-Mesme, FRA), Rufino Bensadon and Juan-Gris Zavaleta (Le Pommeraye, FRA) Tito Ruiz Guiñazu and Facundo Llorente (La Magdeleine, FRA). Great players and fighters, who will light up the games! And the list is not yet finalized!

Respectable French presence

Fifteen French players appear on the list, including seven captains, the two French handicap 6: Brieuc Rigaux (Britanny Polo) and Pierre-Henri Ngoumou (Mungo), the handicap 5: Patrick Paillol (Kazak) and Clément Delfosse (for the German team Schockemöhle who will, like La Magdeleine, return from the English Gold Cup). The professional Caroline Anier, (Le Pommeraye) best French women player of all time who was handicap 4 (mixed) a few years ago. Another French team, with the young French hopeful Sam Sztarkmann, Majoa Polo Team, will tip the odds having teamed up up three Argentinean handicap 5.

French Lifestyle

The French Open is a beautiful and enchanting interlude in the largest club in France. Eight playing fields in a natural setting, beautiful images of the sport’s fighting spirit full in emotion in a very leisurely atmosphere during the week, often at sunset. The Tacos Bar, the polo food-truck, is always there on the edge of the field to quench thirsts and appease small appetites. On weekends, the matches are commented, which makes them more understandable for the public.

Fridays are particularly festive with the famous convivial “aperitifs” in the “Orangerie” along the fields of honor with entertainment after the day’s match. On the day of the finals, there will be a prestigious village with stores and entertainment, an “Orangerie” that turns into an upscale restaurant, a champagne bar and perfect chic picnic areas that run the whole length of the field. The French Open is a unique opportunity to discover a country sport in a friendly setting, out of the ordinary!

This year, they will bring the partnership to the next level with the Polo Club of the Domaine de Chantilly, by becoming the Title Sponsor of the French Open, which will be held from September 3 rd to 19 th in Apremont.

The French Open is the apotheosis of the French polo season. Created at the beginning of this century, this tournament has now become a must-have title for the great French and Argentinian professionals. For three weeks, the best French and European players, as well as emblematic polo figures in Argentina, will be competing on the grounds of the Chantilly Polo Club.

POLO CLUB DÜSSELDORF will take part in the 2021 POLO RIDER CUP

Polo Club Düsseldorf (GER) will take part in the 2021 POLO RIDER CUP, alongside the Chantilly Polo Club (FRA), Hamburger Polo Club (GER), Dos Lunas Polo Club (SPA), Moscow Polo Club (RUS) and Evviva Polo St. Moritz (SUI). This is the second German Club to join the POLO RIDER CUP, which will be held from 10 to 20 June 2021 at the Polo Club of Chantilly, north of Paris.

The Polo Club Düsseldorf team will comprise the following players:

Season 2021: around fifty tournaments over seven months of non-stop Polo!

The Polo Club du Domaine de Chantilly 2021 season will be made up of five highlights:

The official opening of the Club is scheduled the 3rd and 4th April, with the Rallye d‘Aumale followed by four weeks of tournaments.

In May and June, the 10/12 goals season will start up again with the Spring Triple Crown and the Polo Rider Cup which will offer us four tournaments, an eight-week international and competitive event with along side 6/8 or 4/6 medium goals tournaments as well as 0/4 or 0/2 low goals tournaments.

The summer season in July is marked by tournaments accessible to all, summer camps for children and international exchanges.

The first three weeks of September are the European top-level gathering with the French Opens accompanied by two other very competitive medium and low goals tournaments.

Finally, the five-week back-season ends with the French Championships and the Autumn tournaments.

A total of fifty tournaments organised over a period of seven months on the nine Club fields await you with all the Ferme d‘Apremont team!

A great French Open!

The match on Tuesday evening which opposed the two brothers Jeta and Barto Castognola in Chantilly, through their teams of Talandracas and Les Lions Panarea, will remain forever engraved in memories. „The most beautiful match in the history of the club“, „The most exciting game ever played in France for decades“, „Incredible speed, dream horses“. The public, rather numerous for a Tuesday, left this match of anthology with stars in their eyes.

29 goals in 5 chukkers, extraterrestrial actions motivated by the healthy competition between the two Castagnola brothers who were playing against each other for the first time. 8 goals from Barto, 10 from Jeta who could have extended the party if he has scored that 30-yard penalty at 30“ from the end… when he had strung on like pearls all the 60-yard penalties and other corners he wanted! „This game deserved an overtime,“ lamented Talandracas‘ manager Santiago Gastambide. A great show. Polo has crossed a new milestone in Chantilly.

It was the first time that the two brothers, aged 16 and 18, perfectly trained by their father, Lolo Castagnola, former handicap 10 and back of La Dolfina, were face to face. A discovery: „I didn‘t know Jeta played so well, I had a hard time countering him“, confided the man of the match, Barto Castagnola to his manager. Sweet! The two brothers, who tomorrow will be a legend in this sport, are bitten to the bone. When they‘re not playing, they go to every possible match currently taking place at Chantilly Polo Club*, even the low-goal games, in case there‘s a horse to be found, they take every opportunity to try out horses or play practices with borrowed horses. No time for PlayStation!

If this match was the highlight of this Open, but also of the club‘s life, the other matches did not disappoint, on the contrary. With 11 players of the level of the Argentine Open, we had something to enjoy since the kick-off last Friday, when Marquard Media took its revenge for the Deauville Gold Cup final by inflicting a bitter 13 – 8 on the Spaniards of Marqués de Riscal (who then signed a victory on Sunday against Sainte-Mesme).

Another team also makes a big impression: that of the Dutch Nicky Sen, with notably the former handicap 9 and semi-finalist of the Argentinean Open (with Pilara), Santiago Chavanne. Amanara clearly won her two matches against Le Pommeray(11-8) and Sainte-Mesme (9-4), who lost so her second match of the tournament.

See you now on Friday for three more matches: Talandracas who will face this Dutch team Amanara (15H00); at 13H00, neither Majoa Paris nor Sainte Mesme will have the right to make a mistake; and at 16H30, it will be hot for Marquard Media, undefeated for the moment, who will meet… Les Lions Panarea: Another great day in perspective. Abandon your offices and come to Chantilly!

Chantilly Polo Club gets ready for the new season

7 April: The long-awaited grass polo season at the Polo Club du Domaine de Chantilly begins in April with a seductive first date: The Aumale Rally and the Aumale Rally Cup. It is a gathering of old cars, whose final rallying point is the Polo Club of Chantilly. This Rally for the benefit of the Institut Curie, fighting against pediatric cancer, had gathered 120 collection cars for its first edition in 2015, there will be more than 200 this year! The day ends with the first final of the season with a field of honor surrounded by these magnificent cars. The encounter of two passions. Like all events of the Polo Club, access to this day is entirely free for the public.

Save the date: Three tournaments from May 11 to June 30, 2019, 50 days of matches and the return to Chantilly of the great Argentinian, French and European professionals.

For the 2019 season, the Chantilly Polo Club and its partners endowed the Charity Cup with 12,000 Euro for the final (8,000 Euro to the winner and 4,000 Euro to the finalist).

7 – 22 September: Open de France – The summit of the French season !
6 days after Sotogrande and Deauville in August, the best polo in France returns to Chantilly for the Open de France from September 7 to 22, followed by federal competitions of the FFP. Many prices, parties and a big show! French Open 14/16 Goals, Castel Trophy 6/8 Goals, Captain Trophy 0/4 Goals.
17 – 22 September: Women’s French Open 12/16 Goals
