25 February 2023:  In the opening match of the IFZA Gold Cup 2023 quarter finals, both Ghantoot Polo and Bangash Dodson & Horrell Polo teams displayed a defensive play, with one lead for Bangash Dodson & Horrell Polo.

Tomas F. Llorente Jr. for the Bangash Dodson & Horrell Polo team scored the first goal of the game, and by the third chukker he closed it with a 1-goal lead for the team, bringing the score 5 goals to 4. Ghantoot Polo accelerated their performance by scoring three goals, resulting in a tied score of 7 goals each by the end of the penultimate chukker. Marcos Araya from Ghantoot Polo and Federico Von Potobsky from Bangash Dodson & Horrell Polo each scored a goal, ending the 5th chukker with 8 goals to all. For the second time in the tournament we witnessed a golden goal, and this time it was Haider Bangash, the Patron of the Bangash team, who clinched the winning goal. The team‘s impressive victory secured their place in the Semifinals.

The much-anticipated match between Dubai Wolves by CAFU and AM Polo team began with a promising start, as Teodora Lacau scored the opening goal. The Wolves maintained their lead until the second chukker, and in the third, the team‘s Patron, Habtoor Al Habtoor, scored a goal to extend their lead. However, Benjamin Urquiza and Benjamin Strada from AM Polo responded with a goal each, resulting in a tied score of 5 goals by the end of the third. During the penultimate chukker, AM Polo‘s Cesar Crespo and Benjamin Urquiza scored two consecutive goals, turning the tables in their team‘s favor. In the final stretch, Habtoor Al Habtoor of Dubai Wolves by CAFU managed to score, bringing the score to double digits, but ultimately it was Cesar Crespo who sealed the victory for AM Polo with a final score of 11-10.

22 February 2023: The 6th and final day of the IFZA Gold Cup 2023 Qualifiers featured 2 matches: Ghantoot Polo against Clinova Noa Capital Polo, and UAE Polo against Dubai Wolves by CAFU.

Marcos Araya of Ghantoot Polo kicked off the afternoon match against Clinova Noa Capital Polo with a 30-yard penalty goal. The game continued to be one-sided in favor of UAE Polo, with the second chukker ending at 5-2. The pace of the match picked up in the third chukker, with Marcos and Pablo Llorente Jr. scoring three goals each to bring the scoreboard to 9-3 in favor of Ghantoot Polo. In the penultimate chukker, Ghantoot Polo extended their lead with two goals by Segundo Amadori and one each by Pablo and Marcos, taking their score to double digits with 13-5. The Patrons of both the teams, Raja Karim from Clinova and Nasser Al Shamsi of Ghantoot Polo scored a goal, with Tommy Iriarte carving a last minute goal for the Clinova. However, despite their efforts, it was Ghantoot Polo who emerged as the clear winner with a final score of 15-9.

The fight to qualify for the quarterfinals was between Dubai Wolves by CAFU and UAE Polo. Martin Podesta opened the match with a brilliantly executed shot, but not long after, Carlos Ulloa equalized the score, resulting in a tied score of 1–1 at the end of the first chukker. The first half of the match was a closely contested affair as both teams were evenly matched, resulting in tied scores of 3–3 in the second chukker and 5–5 by the end of the third. A brilliant passage of play was displayed by both the teams by the second half, but it was white shirted players of the UAE Polo team who managed to gain the advantage, as Lucas Monteverde Jr. and Tommy Beresford led their team with a 2-goal lead in the penultimate chukker. In the final stretch of the game, Jacinto Crotto and Teodora Lacau each scored a goal in the last few minutes, but it was not enough as Beresford and Monteverde of the UAE Polo team sealed their victory over the Wolves with a final score of 9 goals to 7.

Emirates Open Polo Cup International 18th Edition – returns with Half Million AED Prize Money.

The 18thEmirates Open Polo Championship International, one of the most highly anticipated events on the UAE Polo calendar, will held at the Ghantoot Racing & Polo Club (GRPC) from December 10thto 21st. Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Falah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Founder and Chairman of the Ghantoot Racing & Polo Club, the prestigious tournament carries a rich purse of half a million AED in prize money.

This year’s renewal of the Emirates Open Polo Championship, a 14-handicap category event, will feature five teams – UAE Polo Team, Abu Dhabi Polo Team, Ghantoot Polo Team, Desert Palm Polo Team and Al Habtoor Polo Team.

Sheikh Falah, a keen polo enthusiast and doyen of the game himself, has given the Ghanoot Polo Team, a Royal seal of approval, and nominated Yousef Bin Dasmal as its skipper. “I believe that the 2018 Emirates Open Polo Championship will live up to all expectations and be just as exciting, if not more, than the previous tournaments,” said Sheikh Falah. “I wish all the teams the best of success and I’m sure we will witness some competitive and entertaining polo matches at Ghantoot. “I genuinely thank all our esteemed partners and sponsors, the club management, volunteers and fans for their continuous support of the Ghantoot Racing & Polo Club, for without you we would not be able to host such prestigious events as the Emirates Open,” Sheikh Falah said.

Ahmed Al Nuaimi, Managing Director of the Ghantoot Racing & Polo Club, added: “We are delighted to host the first major tournament of the season at Ghantoot. The Emirates Open is also a special event as it brings out the best in the players. “We look forward to watching some exciting and entertaining mates over the next two weeks here at Ghantoot,” he said. “The Emirates Open is a tournament with a rich history and has ceaselessly delivered the highest quality of polo and I’m sure that we can look forward to some very competitive matches. The standard of the sport is growing year by year in the UAE and this is very encouraging for club’s like ours to host a sport that is growing not just in terms of the players, but also the quality of polo horses.
