International Polo Club Palm Beach

Wellington, FL – January 17, 2021 – The 2021 Joe Barry Memorial concluded at the International Polo Club Palm Beach on Sunday with Santa Clara emerging victorious over Beverly Polo on the Home of U.S. Polo Assn – Field 1. In a memorable final for Santa Clara, the two father-son duos of Escobar’s and Magrini’s remained undefeated, capturing the 10-7 victory and the Joe Barry Memorial title.

Santa Clara continued their exceptional performance in Sunday’s final, displaying a balanced team effort on both offense and defense to defeat Beverly Polo for the second time in the tournament. Aiming to overcome their 11-10 overtime loss to Santa Clara a week earlier, Beverly Polo struggled from the field, converting just two of their 15 attempts. Tolito Ocampo managed to keep Beverly Polo in the match, shooting a perfect 3 for 3 from the penalty line, but Santa Clara proved to be the better team on the day, shooting 43% on 16 shots. Keko Magrini led all players with four goals, including crucial back-to-back goals in the sixth chukker, securing the tournament victory for Santa Clara in their 2021 debut.

In the early stages of the game, Santa Clara quickly erased their one-goal deficit on handicap, holding Beverly Polo scoreless in the first chukker while receiving one goal each from Keko Magrini and Luis Escobar. An early fall from Lucas Diaz Alberdi forced him from the game due to injury, replaced by Peke Gonzalez as Beverly Polo searched for an offensive spark. Goals were difficult to come by in a defensive second chukker with a Penalty 4 conversion for Tolito Ocampo proving to be the only goal in the chukker, tying the score at 2-2. Lucas and Luis Escobar helped Santa Clara retake the lead in the first few minutes of the third chukker scoring two consecutive goals, but Beverly Polo’s Peke Gonzalez made an impact with his first goal, along with one field goal from Hilario Figueras to end the first half with the teams deadlocked at 4-4

The hard-fought physical game carried into the second half with just one shot between the two teams in the fourth chukker. Receiving two penalty opportunities, Santa Clara’s Lucas Escobar converted both, giving Santa Clara their first control of the game at 6-4. The duo of Keko Magrini and Lucas Escobar was a consistent factor for Santa Clara throughout the tournament, driving their attack forward, and it carried into the final two chukkers. A second yellow card awarded to Ocampo left Beverly Polo a man short for two minutes as Santa Clara extended their lead to three on goals from Keko Magrini and Luis Escobar in the fifth chukker, leaving Beverly Polo facing a difficult task with one chukker remaining. Despite scoring two goals from the penalty line in the sixth chukker, Beverly Polo’s inability to convert from the field, scoring zero field goals in the second half allowed Santa Clara to secure the victory. Keko Magrini managed to score two back-to-back goals in the final minutes, completing the impressive performance in Santa Clara’s 10-7 victory.

Wellington, FL – January 13, 2021 – In a crucial game for both teams, Santa Clara pulled off an emphatic victory Wednesday at the International Polo Club Palm Beach, defeating Palm Beach Equine 14-11 and remaining undefeated in the Joe Barry Memorial. The efficient attacking skills of Santa Clara’s Lucas Escobar and Matias Magrini, who scored nine and two goals, respectively, helped secure the impressive victory on the Isla Carroll West field and the team’s spot in Sunday’s final.

Coming off a thrilling 11-10 overtime victory against Beverly Polo on Sunday, Santa Clara, led by standout player Lucas Escobar, maintained their composure on the field, taking control of the game in a dominant fourth chukker that saw five goals off the mallet of Lucas Escobar. Despite the strong start from Palm Beach Equine, Santa Clara produced nearly twice as many shots at goal while also shooting an accurate 67 percent to outplay their opponents in the second half. Holding Palm Beach Equine to just two field goals over the final four chukkers, Santa Clara’s defense held off the late charge from Palm Beach Equine to capture the victory.

Keko Magrini converted an early goal for Santa Clara to open the scoring in the first chukker, but they were unable to take advantage of their one-goal handicap after Palm Beach Equine’s Costi Caset and Gringo Colombres scored one goal each to end the first chukker at 2-2. Palm Beach Equine dominated the second chukker, delivering four goals, three of which were from Caset, who provided accurate shooting from the penalty line. Santa Clara’s Lucas Escobar answered back, but the momentum remained with Palm Beach Equine as they held the 6-3 lead. Santa Clara bounced back at the end of the half thanks to a balanced attack that resulted in one field goal apiece from Lucas Escobar, Luis Escobar, and Matias Magrini. Cutting the deficit to one, Santa Clara trailed 7-6 with three chukkers remaining between them and a spot in the final.

Determined to claim the lead, Santa Clara entered the second half with a strong and coordinated team play, tearing apart Palm Beach Equine’s solid defense behind the play of Lucas Escobar. Scoring all five of Santa Clara’s goals in the fourth chukker, three coming from the penalty line, Lucas Escobar quickly gave Santa Clara the 11-7 lead in a chukker to remember. Continuing to apply pressure in the fifth chukker, Santa Clara found themselves in foul trouble, committing six fouls that ultimately led to two penalty goals for Palm Beach Equine. Conceding three goals, one each to Costi Caset, Robbie Bilbao, and Gringo Colombres, Santa Clara’s lead was cut to one, setting up an exciting finish. With rain coming down, leaving tough playing conditions, it was Lucas Escobar that capped off an exceptional performance with his eighth and ninth goals to secure the 14-11 victory for Santa Clara and book their place in the final, where they will face Beverly Polo in a rematch on the Home of the U.S. Polo Assn – Field 1 at IPC.

Wellington, FL – January 10, 2021 – For the second consecutive game in the 2021 Joe Barry Memorial, Beverly Polo found themselves in overtime, this time against Santa Clara, who was making their 2021 debut at the International Polo Club Palm Beach. After tying the game in the final seconds, Santa Clara’s Keko Magrini scored the overtime winning goal just one minute and 45 seconds into overtime, securing the 11-10 victory on the Home of the U.S. Polo Assn – Field 1.

A Santa Clara team featuring father-son duos of Magrini’s and Escobar’s excelled in their first game of the season, led by the young kids, Keko Magrini and Lucas Escobar, who finished with four and five goals, respectively. Shooting an efficient 67 percent from the field, Santa Clara overcame a slow start to challenge a Beverly Polo team that relied on the penalty shooting of Tolito Ocampo and four field goals from Lucas Diaz Alberdi. Late foul trouble for both teams sent the game to the penalty line, but after late penalty conversions for both teams, it was an exciting run by Santa Clara to goal that was completed for the thrilling 11-10 victory.

Conceding one goal on handicap, Santa Clara quickly erased the deficit, marching downfield from a knock-in to tie the game at 1-1 on a goal from Lucas Escobar. Beverly Polo controlled play throughout the rest of the opening chukker by producing four shots at goal but converted just one along with one goal from the penalty line to hold the 3-1 advantage. The continued pressure of Beverly Polo extended their lead further, led by the efforts of two field goals from Alberdi in his best game of the season so far. A penalty 4 conversion for Keko Magrini ignited some momentum for Santa Clara as they pulled within one on Luis Escobar’s first goal of the game. Ocampo edged Beverly Polo back ahead by two to end the first half with his team holding the 6-4 lead.

Missing just one shot in the first half, Santa Clara carried their accurate shooting into the second half while generating more opportunities at goal, helping them bring the game even. Luis and Lucas Escobar combined for three goals in the fourth chukker, turning a two-goal deficit into a tied 7-7 score with two chukkers remaining. The game moved to the penalty line over the final two chukkers as the hard-fought game resulted in six penalty attempts between the two teams in the final stages. Relying on their two young players, Santa Clara remained even with Beverly Polo on conversions from Lucas Escobar and Keko Magrini, while Beverly Polo’s Ocampo scored from the field and the penalty line, leaving the game deadlocked at 9-9. As the clock ticked down, Ocampo converted a crucial penalty 4, leaving Beverly Polo just minutes from their second victory, but with seconds left Santa Clara was sent to the penalty line with an opportunity to send the game into overtime. The initial penalty attempt from Lucas Escobar went wide but was tipped in front of goal. Jumping on the loose ball, Keko Magrini sent the game into overtime on the thrilling final play.

Withstanding an early Beverly Polo attack, Santa Clara hit a long pass downfield to start an open run to goal. Fighting a bouncing ball, Santa Clara left the ball in front of goal and it was Keko Magrini who came through in the clutch for the second time, sending a shot through the goal and securing the 11-10 overtime victory for Santa Clara. For his four-goal performance, Ocampo was awarded Most Valuable Player while Matias Magrini’s Don Ercole Elite captured Best Playing Pony.

Wellington, FL – January 6, 2021 – Facing each other just days after competing for the Bobby Barry Cup, Palm Beach Equine and Beverly Polo kicked off play in the 2021 Joe Barry Memorial with a thrilling overtime match on the Isla Carroll East field at the International Polo Club Palm Beach. Tolito Ocampo played the hero, converting the difficult nearside neck shot to secure the 12-11 victory for Beverly Polo.

Withstanding a run of six goals from Palm Beach Equine in the middle of the game, Beverly Polo received a strong contribution from Hilario Figueras, who finished with five goals, four of which came from the penalty line, in the thrilling victory. Palm Beach Equine had their opportunities to take the victory, shooting an efficient 69 percent on 13 shots, but were kept on the defensive in the final stages of the game due to the relentless pressure of Beverly Polo. Playing exceptionally in the #1 position, a crucial goal from Bill Ballhaus helped force overtime, where Beverly Polo quickly forced Palm Beach Equine into a foul that ultimately led to the game-winning goal from Ocampo.

Quickly extending their two-goal lead on handicap, Beverly Polo raced out of the gate receiving a field goal from Ocampo and penalty 2 conversion from Figueras to hold a 4-0 advantage. Following up his MVP performance from Sunday, Gringo Colombres brought Palm Beach Equine back into the game, scoring two goals while also receiving a foul that resulted in a Costi Caset penalty conversion. Finding their stride, Palm Beach Equine began to pressure Beverly Polo, but foul trouble, including two blocking infractions, allowed Beverly Polo to push their lead to three at 7-4. The momentum of the game changed at the end of the first half due to missed opportunities from Beverly Polo and perfect 3-for-3 shooting from Palm Beach Equine, receiving one goal each from Caset, Colombres, and Robbie Bilbao, to tie the score at 7-7 entering halftime.

The duo of Caset and Colombres continued to be effective for the Palm Beach Equine attack, combining for two goals in the fourth chukker for their first lead of the game. Completing a run of six unanswered goals, Palm Beach Equine had their sights set on their second consecutive victory to open the season. Figueras ended the run, receiving a penalty 1 for Beverly Polo, but they remained trailing by one with two chukkers remaining. Making a significant impact, Ballhaus completed a long run for his first goal of the game and quickly followed that up with an important goal in the sixth chukker, giving Beverly Polo the 11-10 lead with time running out. Caset responded with his fourth goal to tie the score and with a chance to win the game, sent a penalty 3 attempt wide, pushing the game into overtime.

Receiving an early foul, Beverly Polo held possession in the attacking half and on a determined run to goal, it was Ocampo that jumped on the loose ball, sending a tough nearside neck shot just inside the post to secure the exciting 12-11 victory for Beverly Polo. Play resumes on Sunday at 3 p.m. on the Home of the U.S. Polo Assn – Field 1, with Beverly Polo facing Santa Clara.

Wellington, FL – January 3, 2021 – The opening day of the 2021 season arrived at the International Polo Club Palm Beach (IPC), beginning with the Bobby Barry Cup final between Palm Beach Equine and Beverly Equestrian on the Home of the U.S. Polo Assn – Field 1. Played under a different environment without the usual packed grandstand, Palm Beach Equine emerged victorious, defeating Beverly Equestrian 13-11 and capturing the Bobby Barry Cup title.

Conceding two goals on handicap to Beverly Equestrian, Palm Beach Equine received an impressive performance from Gringo Colombres, leading all players with six goals as part of an efficient attack alongside Robi Bilbao and Costi Caset. Scott Swerdlin was effective in the back position for the Palm Beach Equine defense that prevented any significant runs from their opponent. The momentum of the game changed at the beginning of the second half as Palm Beach Equine scored six of the first eight goals to build a large enough lead and withstand a late push from Beverly Equestrian to complete the two-goal victory.

Building on their two-goal advantage, 16-goal Beverly Equestrian extended their lead to three at the end of the first chukker after two goals from Tolito Ocampo, pressuring Palm Beach Equine in the early stages of the match. A tightly marked defensive game was seen for the remainder of the first half with little space given to each team, resulting in a few fouls that favored Palm Beach Equine. Unable to capitalize on the extra possessions from three Beverly Equestrian fouls in the second chukker, Palm Beach Equine stayed three behind on the scoreboard after Hilario Figueras and Bilbao traded goals for their respective teams. Finding their pace in the final chukker of the half, Palm Beach Equine kept Beverly Equestrian in their own half, converting a Penalty 2 as well as receiving a Penalty 1 to reduce the deficit to one and trail 6-5 at halftime.

Breaking through in the opening moments of the second half, Palm Beach Equine took their first lead of the game on Colombres’ third goal, which ignited a dominant fourth and fifth chukker. After being held scoreless in the first half, Costi Caset made an immediate impact, scoring two goals for Palm Beach Equine, extending their lead to 9-7. A back and forth fifth chukker saw Beverly Equestrian battle to reclaim the lead on goals from Figueras and Lucas Diaz Alberdi, but Palm Beach Equine’s offense continued to produce thanks to the efforts of Colombres. Adding two goals to his total, Colombres left Palm Beach Equine holding a four-goal advantage with just one chukker between them and the victory. Another Colombres goal pushed the lead to four, leaving Beverly Equestrian with a difficult task with time running out. Despite conceding field goals to Ocampo and Figueras, Palm Beach Equine completed the strong opening day performance, capturing the exciting 13-11 victory.

Leading scorer Gringo Colombres was awarded Most Valuable Player while his pony Dolfina Niniera received Best Playing Pony Honors. Palm Beach Equine and Beverly Equestrian will meet again on Wednesday at IPC to begin play in the Joe Barry Memorial.

An action-packed start to the third round of the 2020 USPA Gold Cup® featured three games, with upsets occurring in each game including Dutta Corp handing Las Monjitas their first loss of the season with an impressive 20-11 victory. Santa Clara defeated C.V. Whitney Cup finalist La Indiana 10-7, while Equuleus narrowly edged Coca-Cola 8-7 for their first victory of the tournament at the International Polo Club Palm Beach.

The opening game featured a stunning performance from Dutta Corp, who produced the highest goal total of the season thus far with 20 goals against previously undefeated Las Monjitas. Dutta Corp was efficient from both the field and the penalty line, where they shot 86% and 80% respectively, in what provided to be a foul-ridden game with 29 fouls. Limiting Las Monjitas’ opportunities from the field, Dutta Corp completed the dominant 20-11 victory.

Eight fouls in the opening two chukkers from Las Monjitas resulted in five penalty goals for the duo of Facundo and Mariano Obregon as Dutta Corp raced out to a large lead. Conceding possessions, Las Monjitas was kept off the scoreboard, while Dutta Corp produced six goals, receiving at least one goal from each player for a quick 6-0 lead. After a penalty 2 conversion from Francisco Elizalde, Dutta Corp went on another goal run, scoring four unanswered goals, three from Mariano Obregon to finish the second chukker with a 10-1 lead. Playing at a lightning quick pace, Dutta Corp overwhelmed Las Monjitas across the entire field and took advantage of each opportunity to lead by 10 goals at halftime.

Entering the game as the lone undefeated team, Las Monjitas was stunned by Dutta Corp’s relentless attack that continued to extend their lead further. The umpire’s whistle slowed play in the second half as scoring turned to the penalty line, with Facundo Obregon adding two more penalty goals. Finishing the fourth chukker and still yet to score from the field, a frustrated Las Monjitas side were left facing an insurmountable 16-4 deficit with two chukkers remaining. Sitting back defensively over the final two chukkers, Dutta Corp finally conceded their first field goal to Bautista Panelo, who replaced an injured Mackenzie Weisz, but Dutta Corp cruised to the convincing 20-11 victory, improving to 3-0 in the tournament.

The second game of the day featured 2-0 La Indiana against 1-1 Santa Clara, but it was Santa Clara who controlled play throughout the match. Five goals each from Ignatius Du Plessis and Polito Pieres led their respective teams, but it was an organized defense from Santa Clara, holding La Indiana to 3 for 10 shooting from the field that proved to be the difference in the victory. Luis Escobar opened the scoring for Santa Clara, but a penalty 3 conversion from Pieres, along with a field goal from Jeff Hall gave La Indiana the early 2-1 lead. In one of the most decisive chukkers of the match, Santa Clara produced four goals in quick succession, led by two from Du Plessis and an impressive goal from Henry Porter to race into a 5-2 advantage on the scoreboard. Fouls from Santa Clara slowed their momentum to finish the half, but they maintained their three-goal lead heading into halftime.

Focused on making their comeback, La Indiana fought to create chances at goal, but Santa Clara’s strong defense made their shot attempts difficult. Converting just one of their first six shot attempts, La Indiana saw their deficit grow to four with Du Plessis pacing the Santa Clara attack. The duo of Pieres and Hall combined for three goals as La Indiana found their footing in the fifth chukker, pulling within two goals as excitement rose around the field in a potential comeback. A clutch penalty 4 conversion from Du Plessis to begin the final chukker gave Santa Clara a commanding three-goal lead, which they didn’t give up, capturing the 10-7 victory, matching La Indiana’s 2-1 record atop Bracket I.

The final game of the day on the U.S. Polo Assn. Field 1 displayed a defensive battle between Coca-Cola and Equuleus that came down to the final second on a penalty conversion from Mariano Gonzalez. Despite inaccurate shooting from the field and the penalty line, Equuleus outshot Coca-Cola 17-10, with the extra attempts leading them to the narrow victory. A back and forth start to the game resulted in the two teams trading goals, deadlocked at 2-2 after the first chukker. The duo of Inaki and Magoo Laprida combined for a three-goal run that gave Equuleus control of the game, but before the end of the half, Coca-Cola responded with back-to-back goals from Nico Pieres and Julian de Lusarreta.

Defense highlighted the second half of the feature game, leaving the teams within one goal of each other over the final three chukkers. Steve Krueger’s second goal of the game tied the score at 5-5, but scoring was hard to come by for the remainder of the game, with five of the final six goals coming from the penalty line. Penalty goals from Gonzalez and Pieres sent the outcome into the final chukker as spectators were treated to a close finish. Drawing a foul in the final seconds, Equuleus had a penalty 2 attempt for the victory as time was expiring and Gonzalez converted the chance, sending Equuleus to the thrilling 8-7 victory. Magoo Laprida captured MVP honors, while his mare „Nike“ was named the Best Playing Pony.

The “gauntlet” comes from the phrase “throw down the gauntlet”, which is a physical action to issue a formal challenge. For the first time ever in the sport of polo, the GAUNTLET OF POLO trophy was played at the International Polo Club.

The GAUNTLET OF POLO presented by the United States Polo Association is the sport’s newest and most challenging tournament series in the US with an unprecedented $1Million prize purse, and pits the world’s top polo teams in a fierce competition to be crowned GAUNTLET Champion. The GAUNTLET OF POLO consists of three major tournaments. It officially began with the C.V. Whitney Cup in February, continued with the USPA Gold Cup at the end of March and finished on April 21 with the US Open Polo Championship at the International Polo Club Palm Beach (IPC) on the U.S. Polo Assn. stadium field in Wellington, Florida.

Pilot polo team with Facundo and Gonzalito Pieres, Curtis Pilot and Matias Gonzalez secured its place in history as the inaugural winner of the GAUNTLET OF POLO title 2019 with a score of 12-7 over Las Monjitas by winning the U.S. Open Polo Championship, the third leg of the GAUNTLET series. The GAUNTLET was created to increase team participation and attendance, enhance fan experience through interactive events, build public awareness for polo, establish a hero campaign to feature some of the best players in the world, and drive event viewership on CBS Sports. “The GAUNTLET will challenge the world’s top players and horses to strive for the most prestigious tro-phies in the United States and provide a new platform for athletes, teams, sponsors and polo fans,” said Robert Puetz, CEO of the USPA.”

Over the three GAUNTLET months, Pilot played against the high-est level of skilled athletes and ponies and managed to clinch wins in all three GAUNTLET events “It’s amazing to win, it’s like a fairy tale for all of us, the whole team. I started playing polo when I was 49 years old. It’s been an amazing three months and I have to give a shout-out to Mia Bray, a young up-and-coming female polo player, who covered three chukker for me,” said Curtis Pilot, team owner.

“It’s amazing to win, it’s like a fairy tale for all of us, the whole team. I started playing polo when I was 49 years old. It’s been an amazing three months and I have to give a shout-out to Mia Bray, a young up-and-coming female polo player, who covered the first three games so I could handle some personal issues,” said Curtis Pilot, team owner.

Pilot received the “Winner Take All” prize money of $1M along with the GAUNTLET OF POLO™ trophy. The hand-crafted, three-foot trophy features three horses representing each GAUNTLET event guarding a tower glorified with the GAUNTLET logo and an inlaid onyx polo horse head to recognize the sport’s equine partner. This trophy will remind future generations of polo competitors, fans, media and sponsors of the strategy, skill and commitment it takes to have your team name inscribed on the trophy and be crowned the GAUNTLET Champion.

“The GAUNTLET challenged the world’s top polo players and ponies to strive to achieve a new goal. We’re thrilled that Pilot earned the first-ever GAUNTLET OF POLO™ Champion title,” said David Cummings, President and CEO, Global Polo Entertainment. “We created the GAUNTLET OF POLO™ as a sports property that will grow in value through player participation, spectator attendance, viewership and sponsorship involvement. In addition, we delivered a positive economic impact to Palm Beach County by hosting thousands of fans, players and horses from around the world over a three-month period and by showcasing the competition to millions of fans on air and online.”
