Polo Sylt

Glorious sunshine on the final Sunday and huge numbers of spectators – that’s the great result of this year’s Berenberg German Polo Masters on Sylt. Team König Sylt, the local sponsor, came out on top ahead of Transgourmet and Berenberg.

König Sylt has been a team sponsor of the Berenberg German Polo Masters for ten years and has helped to shape the traditional sporting event over the last decade. This anniversary could not have been crowned more beautifully than with yesterday’s victory. Team König Sylt last stood at the top of the podium in 2018.

Transgourmet Cook had been able to maintain a tie until the third chucker, but the outstanding Argentinian 6-goaler Raul Laplacette made it increasingly difficult for his opponents to keep up with him thanks to perfect team play with his compatriot Agustin Kronhaus, Jan-Hendrik Többe and Johannes Wimmer. Nevertheless, Team Transgourmet Cook with Kutlay Yaprak and Lukas Sdrenka from Polo Club Düsseldorf as well as “The Machine” Cristobal Durrieu and Jorgita Reta put in a strong performance.

Klaus Naeve: “High-calibre matches”

In the match for third place, Team Berenberg with the successful Argentinian-German quartet of Udo Klein-Boelting, Dr Jürgen Schröder, Andres “Lala” Laplacette and Pedro Llorente managed to pull out a narrow victory over Aston Martin Hamburg Nord-Ostsee Automobile to take home the bronze medal. Klaus Naeve, Head of Wealth and Asset Management at title sponsor Berenberg: “We are delighted with this third place and would like to congratulate the players. What a great backdrop and atmosphere here on the final day on Sylt. We have experienced five days of strong equestrian sport, high-calibre matches and loud support for the polo teams! The Berenberg German Polo Masters on Sylt are always a special highlight for us and we are already looking forward to seeing you again next year.”

Frederick Többe and Henri Grimme, two of the most talented young players in German polo, were in the saddle for the Aston Martin Hamburg Nord-Ostsee Automobile team, who were able to rely on the experience of Sven Schneider and Matias Maiquez.

In the match for fifth place, Vanessa Schockemöhle, Sebastian Schneberger, Patrick Maleitzke and Juan Correa from Team burckhardt’s glide were beaten 9:11.5 by Team Polo Sylt. Sophie and Moritz Schmidt, two of the best young players in Germany, together with former champion Christopher Kirsch and Argentinian Gines Bargallo Jr. had delivered an exciting intergenerational match.

The long-standing charity partner of Polo Club Sylt and the Berenberg German Polo Masters, Dunkelziffer e.V., also showed its colours again this year and was able to make a contribution to the purely donation-based work of the club by selling high-quality wristbands designed by Polo Sylt.

Accompanied by huge cheers from the audience, the young Frederick Többe from Hamburg received the “Most Valuable Player” award this year. The “Best Playing Pony” was the mare “Poka” from Kutlay Yaprak.

Organiser Kiki Schneider: “We welcomed several thousand visitors over five sunny days with the best of weather. Between applause and cheering, super exciting and fair games, but also strolling through the exhibitors’ pagoda village, children playing, smiling guests and simply relaxed summer moments, everything was there. Thanks to our partners and the best audience you could wish for.”

An international tournament in a class of its own: teams from five nations, accompanied by “the Voice of Polo” Jan Erik Franck, and a varied supporting program await the guests.

Preparations for the 4th International Ladies Cup at PoloPark Berlin are in full swing, and the tournament promises to be an outstanding event in the polo sport calendar. With six teams from five nations, visitors can expect an international competition, enhanced by the commentary of Jan Erik Franck, known as “the Voice of Polo”. In addition to exciting matches, there will be a varied supporting program, including a hat contest – a highlight that underlines the tradition and elegance of polo. The support of renowned sponsors such as Wolfgang Weiss’ fashion brand “blanche,” Polo Sylt, and Ingo Pyko Immobilien will help to enhance the tournament experience.

A new feature this year is the option of reserving a table, giving guests an exclusive tournament experience. The offer is complemented by first-class catering and musical entertainment from polo DJ Sebastian, who will ensure the perfect atmosphere. The forthcoming publication of the official women’s handicaps by the German Polo Association (DPV) is also an important step towards promoting and recognizing women’s polo. The upcoming tournament in PoloPark Berlin is characterized by a top-class field of participants, a varied program, and the support of renowned sponsors. It promises to be an unforgettable event for all polo enthusiasts and guests, once again putting the fascination of the sport center stage.

In an exhilarating season finale, Team Polo Sylt emerged victorious against Team COSMOPOLO / PoloPark Berlin, securing first place in Germany‘s last grass polo tournament of the year. This event, held from October 13th to 15th, 2023 at PoloPark Berlin, attracted four international polo teams who, with around 70 polo horses, battled for the win.

Autumn showcased its finest colors and provided optimal conditions for thrilling chukkas over the course of three days. With expert commentary by „the Polospeaker“ Jan Zavazal and musical ambiance set by Polo DJ Sebastian, referee Marco Zubrod ensured the adherence to the rules on the field.

Unfortunately, Team POLO+10 had to settle for 4th place after suffering two losses by a narrow margin of half a goal and playing one game to a draw.

Thomas Bauer and his crew took care of the culinary needs of the players and guests, who enjoyed the exciting matches and the special atmosphere of the tournament.

With this event, Baltic Polo Events concludes a remarkable season with a total of ten polo events involving around 200 polo players and approximately 700 polo horses. This action-packed year culminated in a unique blend of sport and culture as the season-ending tournament was combined with an Oktoberfest celebration.

Now, Baltic Polo Events is heading into a well-deserved winter break. However, the anticipation for the 2024 polo season is already mounting.

The event, held from July 14th to July 16th, 2023, spanned three days of top-notch “Ladies Only” sports. It witnessed the participation of six international women’s polo teams from seven countries, along with more than 100 accompanying polo horses. This Ladies Polo Cup stands as a unique event in Germany.

Over these three days, the 1,200 guests in attendance were treated to thrilling chukkas and a diverse range of supporting programs.

The gastronomic aspect was deftly handled by Thomas Bauer and his team from “Feuerplatten BBQ”. Renowned chef Simon Lang showcased his culinary expertise on the final day of the event.

The PoloPark Berlin also saw its first-ever “Hat Contest”. The attendees were encouraged to don their most beautiful or unusual hats, leading to a dazzling display of headgear.

Many women graced the event with their extraordinary hats. Sunday afternoon saw Manuela Vobach, a Berlin entrepreneur specializing in individual fashion consulting, express her admiration for the spectacle. The jury included Patricia Blanco, Pauline Stolze, Britt Kanya, Didi Veron, Simon Lang, Günther Krabbenhöft, and Frank Altmann, all of whom were impressed by the array of creative hat designs.

The Ladies Cup was presented by “The Voice of Polo”, Jan Erik Frank. Meanwhile, Polo DJ Sebastian ensured a lively atmosphere by providing the music.

Johanna Volkmann was honored with the title of MVP (Most Valuable Player). The accolade for the “Best Playing Pony” was bestowed upon a horse from Sophie Schmidt’s stable, which was among the 100 polo horses participating in the event.

It was three days filled with intense polo action as six German teams, supported by over 100 polo horses, journeyed to PoloPark Berlin to participate in the official German Championship. The German Polo Association graciously acted as the patron of the championship.

Despite a significant rain shower featuring hail and 15 liters of precipitation per square meter, the weather remained largely favorable. As a result, the games were only delayed by two hours on Saturday. Over the weekend, 700 guests enjoyed thrilling chukkas and a variety of entertainment, including a Spanish-themed evening on Friday and an Argentinian ASADO dinner on Saturday.

Jan Zavazal from Prague, known as “The Polo Speaker,” expertly moderated all matches. The German Polo Association appointed Thomas Winter from Hamburg and Dominik Velasquez from Switzerland as the official referees, and they presided over all games.

The exhilarating final on Sunday concluded with Team Löwenbrücke Braunschweig triumphing over Team Brand Galaxy Group with a score of 9.5 to 5. The German Low Goal Polo Champions were hence decided. The champions were an all-female team from Berlin, comprising players Clarissa Marggraf, Maike Hölty, Svenja Hölty, and Marie Haupt.

Thomas Winter, on behalf of Oliver Winter, the President of the German Polo Association, presented the medals and the championship trophy. The details of other match results will follow.

After last year’s successful premiere, the Ladies Cup Berlin 2022 went one better with a great atmosphere and glamour. In the end, players, guests and the organizer were happy all round.

„Beautiful weather, beautiful women, beautiful horses, beautiful cars – and above all rousing polo. It couldn’t have gone better!“ After three sparkling days at PoloPark Berlin, organizer Thomas Strunck drew an all-round positive balance for the Ladies Cup 2022. Top players from eight nations such as Canada, the USA and Switzerland came to the second edition of the women’s tournament to thrill the audience with top polo. For the Argentine Milagros „Milli“ Sanchez, who with a women’s handicap of 7 is one of the world’s best young players, it was her first visit to Germany. She did not disappoint in terms of play – even if in the end she and the rest of the Polo Sylt team “only” managed third place.

The Berlin crowd was also in a class of its own, providing glamorous eye-catchers time and again: for example, the ladies from the Red Club Germany, a networking club for women founded by lawyer Michaela Mumm-von Oldenburg, who lived up to the club’s name with their dazzling outfits. And when various members of the RREC (“The international Club for Rolls Royce & Bentley Enthusiasts Germany”) drove up with their noble cars before the start of the second day of play on Saturday, hardly anyone would have been surprised if the Queen had also stopped by for a short visit…

Among the more than 1000 enthusiastic guests were celebrities such as actress Maren Gilzer, who outed herself as a polo fan: „I’ve been enjoying the atmosphere time and again for many years and am now discovering more and more women’s polo.“ Media expert Jo Groebel, whose wife Grit Weiss, who was also present, used to organize polo tournaments herself, summed up the atmosphere at PoloPark Berlin as follows: „It’s a perfect mix of casual relaxedness, a pinch of glamour and a good dose of Berlin snottiness. Wonderful!“

In addition to the new Miss Germany Tatjana Genrich and It-Girl Cathy Lugner, fashion star and eccentric icon Harald Glööckler didn’t miss the chance to drop by on finals day and enjoy the flair – although for him top-class polo was rather secondary: „I love horses! For me, they are the greatest and noblest animals in the world.“ And the weather? It played along perfectly: It was mostly sunny and neither too cool nor too hot and made a statement on the final day with bright sunshine. Visitors were treated to an exciting mix of classic burgers, salad bowls and Sylt oysters – served by Germany’s only oyster sommelier, Peter Richter.

In the end, in a hotly contested final, which like all matches was expertly commented by „The Voice Of Polo“ Jan-Erik Franck and Jan Zavazal, the team Ingo Pyko Immobilien won out of six teams with 7.5 : 6 against Ostseebad Dahme. What remains are satisfied players, guests and organizers – as well as the good feeling that the Ladies Cup is well on its way to playing out its full potential and could thus also establish itself as a fixed polo highlight of the season.
