Next Tuesday 13th February marks the start of the 47th NZ Polo Open tournament in Clevedon with 30 teams competing throughout the week in various grades. In the high-goal, six teams will contest in very competitive polo to secure a place in the renowned NZ Polo Open final, to be held at Auckland Polo Club on Sunday 18th.

Polo is one of the world’s oldest sports originating over 2000 years ago in Persia as a training game for cavalry before becoming a national Persian sport played by nobility. Eventually spreading to India where the modern-day game was established by British soldiers, who can be credited with advancing polo worldwide at the height of the British empire. Military officers imported the game to Britain in the 1860s and soon made its way to New Zealand. Auckland Polo Club was established in 1887, the country’s largest polo club and host to the sporting and social event of the summer, NZ Polo Open.

Founded in 1977, NZ Polo Open is cemented on the global polo circuit, attracting overseas polo professionals to play with the best of New Zealand’s polo talent.

“We have a great line-up of teams this year and the international professionals have arrived from global polo hubs, Argentina, England, Australia and South Africa,” says Lucy Ainsley, Executive Director of NZ Polo Open. “It will be by far the best and most exciting polo played this year.”

Amongst the players taking to the field, Captain of the English Polo team, James Harper will play in the Brinks team while his son Will Harper will compete in the Rodd & Gunn team.

Paco O’Dwyer in the Ecogas team returns from Argentina for his sixth NZ Polo Open and Australian Lachie Gilmore, son of polo legend Glen Gilmore will play for Kim Clifford Distillery.

Jack Spilsbury from Harrismith, South Africa who recently turned 17 is the youngest player ever to compete in NZ Polo Open. Spilsbury grew up playing with his family and plans to make it as an international polo professional.

“I am really looking forward to the Open. I’m playing some nice NZ horses and am feeling good about our team,” says Jack Spilsbury, who will play in the Cambridge Grains KHS team with Clevedon local James Worker, one of the country’s most experienced players Craig Wilson, and accomplished polo sportsman, Thomas Hunt.

Clevedon brothers Edward Elworthy-Jones and Henry Jones will compete against each other while the formidable duo of Kit Brooks and NZ’s best polo player John-Paul Clarkin, of Tiger Polo team will be defending their NZ Polo Open title.

“NZ Polo Open has never looked this good,” says Ainsley. “With plenty of action on and off the field, we can’t wait for everyone to join us next Sunday.”

Since 2019, Saudi Arabia has been issuing more tourist visas and has started to develop tourism which makes that area and its hidden ‘treasures’ more accessible to the world. Among these is an extraordinary and still quite unknown site: AlUla, in the north-west of the country, which combines natural splendors – the magic of a spectacular desert with rocks artistically sculpted by the winds – and archaeological riches which are reminiscent of those of Petra in Jordan. A site we were able to discover during the Richard Mille Desert Polo tournament and thanks to the French Agency for the Development of AlUla (Afalula).

AlUla is a site the size of Belgium. At its heart is a spectacular oasis as well as architectural treasures retracing the 7,000 years of history that the King and the Crown Prince have decided to reveal to the whole world, a rather revolutionary approach.

Incredible, little-known heritage

Afalula and its Saudi partner collaborate closely to develop this beautiful region in various sectors, including tourism, archaeology, urbanisation and sustainable architecture, agricultural development, water and energy management, the environment, infrastructure, culture, sport, botany, and training. Afalula, chaired by former foreign minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, coordinates the skills and expertise, (mainly French) at the service of this development and on behalf of the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU). Today, AlUla has a population of 50,000, which will eventually rise to 150,000, which is neither surprising nor disproportionate. Buildings rise out of the ground at incredible speed. The priority objective is however to preserve these historical and natural treasures: the Nabatean tombs (first century BC), in the same vein as this civilization has established itself on the much better-known site of Petra in Jordan 400 kilometers away, the Dadan and Lihyan kingdoms (first millennium BC) as well as the prehistoric remains.

The horse will have a large place in the project, as it does in the Arab civilization. Antoine Sinniger, director of the Afalula equestrian project, manages this activity on the French side with the Royal Commission for AlUla. Two equestrian villages will be built on the site: one, a culture center around a Horse Museum primarily dedicated to the Arabian horse, and another, a sports center that can host major show jumping, endurance and polo events. Competitions in respective disciplines already exist on the site and the best polo player of all time, the legendary Argentine Adolfo Cambiaso, is an ambassador of AlUla and has been coming to play with his Dolfina Team in demonstration on the desert sand since the beginning of the project as part of one of the major operations to promote the site.

For tourists, even before the site fully develops, even in a reasonable way, visiting AlUla currently remains a privileged escapade, far from the crowds of Petra. The hotel accommodation is already top-of-the-range and well-integrated into nature. And let’s not forget Maraya, the incredible cultural center, a palace of glass and mirrors set in the middle of the desert, reflecting its sandy and rocky backdrop. It hosts several events and concerts, including one by the Paris Opera, which we were able to attend.

Polo in AlUla: the Cambiaso Garden

In Palermo, La Dolfina’s shirts are emblazoned with the “Saudi AlUla” logo – quite a significant sponsor. Invited since 2020 to orchestrate the Richard Mille Desert Polo tournament, Adolfo Cambiaso has firmly established himself in AlUla’s equestrian project. He has become Saudi Arabia’s Mr Polo. In 2020, at the very first edition, he came with his La Dolfina players (Stirling, Nero and McDonough) to play a first arena tournament on local horses. This year, after selling around forty horses from his La Dolfina stud, which were used in the tournament, he brought an ‘extended family’: the 2023 La Dolfina team with his son Poroto, Pablo McDonough, the ambassador for the main tournament sponsor Richard Mille, and a few professional friends such as Alejandro Novillo Astrada and Polo Ralph Lauren muse Nacho Figueras, and the La Dolfina girls: Mia, his daughter, Lia Salvo and Nina Clarkin – all world-class female players. And let’s not forget the patrons such as Melissa Ganzi, David Paradise, Lila Pearson, and Nicky Sen. In short, the organization was 100% La Dolfina, with the addition of a few local players, mainly royal highnesses of the region.

Of course, in the end it was Cambiaso who won under the colors of Team Saudia, along with Nigerian Sayuu Dantana and American Melissa Ganzi. Incidentally, the team won the final by a score of 9-4 against the Richard Mille team led by its former team-mate from La Dolfina and now opponent at La Natividad, Pablo McDonough. It was the perfect scenario, with the two 10-handicap teams going head-to-head, Cambiaso undoubtedly a little more motivated and, above all, very well assisted in attack by the excellent Sayuu Dantana.

But the most important victory for Cambiaso was the cooperation contract he signed at the end of the tournament with The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU). The respective press release states, “The agreement lays the technical foundation for the annual tournament’s success as well as the introduction of new events in the future”.

And further, “La Dolfina will assist RCU in the creation of a new Polo Academy in AlUla, as well as planning and executing training programs for the community, visitors, and Saudis eager to learn the sport under the watchful eye of some of the best coaches and players in the world. La Dolfina will also provide horses to take part in polo tournaments in AlUla”.  A good outlet for La Dolfina breeding…

“Among the sport’s most successful teams, La Dolfina counts Adolfo Cambiaso among its star-studded line up of players. Cambiaso and his La Dolfina teammates along with technical staff will lend their extensive knowledge and experience to the expansion of polo in AlUla.

Sure to grab the attention of the global polo and sporting community, as well as KSA-based players and local equestrian fans, the new partnership marks the transformative and ambitious next stage in the growth of the sport, and desert polo in particular.

As AlUla aims to solidify its role as the leading winter destination for equestrian tournaments, the new strategic collaboration with La Dolfina will super-charge the introduction of robust technical developments, attracting players, teams, enthusiasts, and more to AlUla and its rapidly evolving landscape of facilities and purpose-built infrastructure such as the equestrian Al Fursan Village.

Members of the La Dolfina staff will provide high-level advisory, technical and professional assistance to AlUla’s polo community while also encouraging participation in the sport, increasing capabilities, and helping to establish new economic opportunities.

The new agreement comes with numerous benefits for equestrian and heritage sports in AlUla (and for Cambiaso, editor’s note!) supporting the promotion of deep-rooted cultural traditions around horses in KSA; expanding tourism into new markets with a sophisticated and dedicated audience of global fans; generating new avenues of economic development for the community; and engaging local people to foster a sense of pride and positive participation in AlUla’s regeneration”.

In short, a gigantic project which, in addition to the construction of a 400-stall stable on the site, will see the creation of two grass polo fields… quite a challenge in the desert. But one thing’s for sure: this agreement is another great victory for Adolfo Cambiaso, not only the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) on the polo field, but also in the polo business! Let’s face it, polo at AlUla is Cambiaso’s backyard.

The United States Polo Association (USPA) and the National Polo Center (NPC) are pleased to announce the nine teams that will compete in the 2024 Gauntlet of Polo. The prestigious Gauntlet of Polo returns for the sixth consecutive year, drawing the world’s greatest polo talent to vie for the three most sought-after American titles: the C.V. Whitney Cup, USPA Gold Cup and U.S. Open Polo Championship. Similar to last year, teams can also enter any of the three tournaments individually. One team will take advantage of this opportunity, competing exclusively in the USPA Gold Cup and U.S. Open Polo Championship. While teams can enter individual tournaments within the series, they cannot win the entire Gauntlet of Polo if they choose to do so.

This year’s competition features many returning players and teams, including defending U.S. Open champions, Park Place. Five-time C.V. Whitney Cup winners Valiente will also be making a triumphant return. 2023 USPA Gold Cup winners Scone will return to compete under their new team name, La Dolfina. Pilot will attempt to soar back to the top of the podium for the first time since 2022, and remains the only team to capture the Gauntlet in the inaugural season in 2019.

Former USPA Chairman Chip Campbell returns to the competition under a new team name, Clearwater. Campbell has not competed in the Gauntlet since 2021 when he played for Cessna. Gillian Johnston, the only woman set to compete in the series, is hoping to achieve Gauntlet success having won the U.S. Open Polo Championship in 2002. La Fe and The Dutta Corp boast a unique advantage, with both teams competing with identical 2023 rosters.

Additionally, four 10-goalers (Hilario Ulloa, Facundo Pieres, Poroto Cambiaso, Adolfo Cambiaso) will compete, representing the highest level of the sport. Facundo Pieres is fresh off his win in the 2023 Argentine Open with La Natividad, where he competed against the father/son Cambiaso duo who represented La Dolfina Saudi. Poroto Cambiaso will compete in his fourth Gauntlet of Polo season; just as in 2023, Poroto will play for La Dolfina while his legendary father, Adolfo Cambiaso, will compete for Valiente.

Text by United States Polo Association

The perfect scenario: 10-10, when the two teams entered the cancha for the final chukker after a botched seventh period for La Natividad in the words of its captain, Pablo McDonough. The suspense was just right to round off a magnificent match in which both quartets put on a great show of fast, fluid polo. A huge Cambiaso once again, but this year he will not be adding another chapter to his legend. No 16th title for La Dolfina and no 19th Abierto for Cambiaso. Will he add to his tally next year?

After a soporific women’s final, the final of the 130th Argentine Open seemed short, such was the quality of play. With little or no down time, few fouls (only 4 penalties converted), each of the eight protagonists really brought out the best in their polo: a “partidazo” as the Argentinians say. Two teams that were clearly better than one another, and in the end it all came down to the final period, even though La Natividad had led most of the time. But the chemistry between two experienced players aged 37 and 41, Facundo Pieres (who had played Cambiaso 13 times in the final) and Pablo McDonough (who had won against and with La Dolfina) and the two prodigies aged 22 and 20, Barto and Jeta Castagnola, worked. Pablo (MVP) organized the game and most of the goals were the result of teamwork, with everyone scoring. For once, it wasn’t Jeta Castognola who scored all La Natividad’s goals: just 4, but that didn’t stop him from finishing top scorer in the tournament with 38 goals, as he had done at Hurlingham and Tortugas (94 goals in all). Poroto Cambiaso, on the other hand, provided the bulk of the scoring with 7 of La Dolfina’s 10 goals, including an 80-yard golazo at 9-10.

The future?

There are no clues as to what will happen next for La Dolfina, or the make-up of La Natividad 2024. What will Cambiaso decide at the age of 48? Will he stick with it? Will he ‘free’ Poroto to join his cousins? And who would pay the price for La Natividad? Pablo McDonough, the main architect of Sunday’s victory in Palermo? There are rumors, but these are just rumors, that Cambiaso would reunite the great Dolfina of nine victories with Pelon Stirling, Juan Martin Nero and Pablo Mac Donough to end his career on a high. With 18 wins from 27 finals, the GOAT is still chasing the records set by Juan-Carlos Harriott (20) and Horacio Antonio Heguy (19). The next few weeks are going to be exciting.

Women’s Abierto: two chukkers and then the beautiful game leaves!

While some of the qualifying matches in the Women’s Open showed good play and a clear progression in women’s polo, the final was not the showcase. After two periods full of promise, notably with golazos from Hazel Jackson (El Overo Z7), the rest resembled French arthouse cinema. Fouls aplenty (17 penalties converted, including 10 for Cande Fernandez out of La Dolfina’s 12 goals – that’s a lot) and few exciting moves. What we will remember most about this final is the victory of a 100% non-Argentine team with three English players and one American, Hope Arellano, who made a big impression throughout the tournament. Will the universalisation of polo involve women? Let’s hope not: among the ten teams in the Men’s Open, there were only two foreigners out of the forty players, Uruguay’s Pelon Stirling (La Dolfina) and South Africa’s Nachi Du Plessis (Ellerstina)!

THE AWARDS

Gonzalo Heguy Trophy and Tipa y Caña Prize for the best player in the final(MVP): Pablo Mac Donough.

Lady Susan Townley Cup, best horse in the final(BPP): Clone Cuartetera B06, played by Adolfo Cambiaso.

Finalist teams and progress:

The final of the 130th Argentine Open, to be played on Saturday (weather permitting) in Palermo’s emblematic ‘cathedral’, will be the third edition of what could have become the new ‘clásico’ between La Dolfina and La Natividad, but with the change of generation, nothing is less certain. In any case, this will be the third meeting between the two cousin teams, and so far, each has won a match (La Natividad in 2021 and La Dolfina last year).

If there’s one man who will be happy once again and won’t lose on Saturday, it’s Adolfo Cambiaso, the first of the name, who will see his son and one of his grandsons, Adolfo ‘hijo’ and Adolfo ‘nieto’, aka Poroto, face off against two other grandsons, Barto and Jeta Castagnola, the sons of Camila, Cambiaso’s sister and wife of Lolo Castagnola.

For the ‘great’ Adolfo, at the age of 48, this will undoubtedly be his last. In any case, there are whispers that he may well announce this at the end of the match that could consecrate him for the eighteenth time in his career since he was 19. A final in which he will give his all, just as he did in the semi-final against Hilario Ulloa’s La Hache… in which he mischievously sought out his opponent’s fouls. Sixteen penalties were converted during the match, which also saw five yellow cards handed out. That’s a lot. But the main thing was there: twentieth final for La Dolfina.

With Poroto (only 18 since Sunday and already in his second final), the Cambiasos have been practicing penalty kicks particularly this week. This gives you an idea of the kind of game La Dolfina intend to play in this final.

La Natividad’s victory over a flamboyant La Ensenada side in the other semi-final was clearly more impressive. Fluid play, great actions from both sides, golazos, notably two from Juan Martin Zubia, eight penalties converted and only two yellow cards.

The day was also marked by a feeling of sadness towards the Pieres. Sure, they won all their games, but not together. Nico and Gonzalito had fought hard before this semi-final on Field #2 to ensure that Ellerstina would remain in the Open 2024. Mission accomplished, but it was a shame to see this team on cancha 2 for its final match of the 2023 Open to ensure its survival, when it had been a finalist thirteen times against La Dolfina (with three wins). Facu, but with La Natividad, won the right to face Cambiaso in the Abierto final for the fourteenth time in his career, but without their brothers. At the end of the match, only his petisero was there to give him a hug, while the Castagnola family rejoiced.

There will be more family hugs on Saturday evening, but it is hard to say whether they will be from the green Castagnola side or the blue Cambiaso side. And no doubt, if Aldofo announces his retirement as is widely expected, the cousins will probably be wearing the same jersey in 2024. So which team will be able to stand up to them in the years to come? That will be the big question after Abierto 2023. In the meantime, there’s a great final to enjoy next Saturday.

The semi-finals

La Dolfina Saudi: Adolfo Cambiaso 10 (6 goals, including 2 penalties and 1 corner), Pelon Stirling 10 (1), Poroto Cambiaso 10 (7 penalties) and Juan M. Nero 10 (2). Total score: 40.

La Hache La Roca: Polito Pieres 9 (8, 4 penalties), Hilario Ulloa 9 (1), Sapo Caset 9 (1 Penal 1) and Fran Elizalde 9 (2, including 1 penalty and 1 Penal 1). Total: 36.

Yellow cards: Juan M. Nero (Chukker 1), Adolfo Cambiaso and Polito Pieres (Chukker 5), Poroto Cambiaso (Chukker 7) and Polito Pieres (after match)

La Dolfina Saudi: 1-2, 2-2, 5-3, 7-4, 9-8, 11-9, 12-11 and 16-12.

La Natividad: Facundo Pieres 9 (3 goals), Jeta Castagnola 10 (9, including 2 penalties and 1 Penal 1), Pablo Mac Donough 10 (2) and Barto Castagnola (h) 10 (3). Total score: 39.

La Ensenada Brubank: Juan Britos 9 (3, including 1 penalty), Alfredo Bigatti 9, Juan M. Zubía 9 (3) and Jeró del Carril 8 (8, including 5 penalties). Total: 35.

Yellow cards: Juan M. Zubia (Chukker 5) and Barto Castagnola (h) (Chukker 6).

La Natividad: 3-0, 5-3, 6-4, 8-7, 11-9, 14-10, 16-13 and 17-14.

Match for the “survival”:

Ellerstina Yellow Rose: Bautista Bayugar 8 (4 goals including 2 penalties), Gonzalito Pieres 9 (4, including 2 penalties), Nicolás Pieres 9 (4) and Nachi du Plessis 9 (1). Total score: 35.

La Irenita Clinova: Facundo Fernández Llorente 8 (6), Tomás Fernández Llorente 8, Matías Torres Zavaleta 8 (1) and Isidro Strada 8. Total score: 32.

Ellerstina Yellow Rose: 3-1, 5-2, 6-2, 7-2, 8-4, 10-5, 11-5 and 13-7.

NB: La Esquina and La Irenita Clinova are not automatically qualified for the 2024 Open and will have to play the qualifiers again, while El Overo Z27 (Lukin Monteverde 7, Victorino, Ruiz Jorba 7, Cruz Heguy 7 and Teodoro Lacau 7), 8th in the rankings, will have to play a play-off match against the winners of the Copa Camara, a team from La Irenita, to qualify.

Andras Tombor lineup defeated El Milagro and won the flagship tournament of the Novillo Astrada’s family club

Bardon earned a 13-7 win over El Milagro and claimed the Julio Novillo Astrada Cup, following the championship match, that took place at La Aguada Polo Club, in Open Door, Argentina, on Tuesday November 21m, on a cold and rainy afternoon. The Julio Novillo Astrada is the opening tournament of the 2023 Spring Season, at La Aguada Polo Club, presented by Río Uruguay Seguros.

El Milagro’s Lukin Monteverde opened the scores in the first chukka; but Bardon replied quickly through Jeta Castagnola and Rufino Lauhlé, who secured the 2-1 advantage for Bardon at the end of the first chukka. From then onwards, the match belonged to Bardon, who remained in the lead throughout the six chukkas of play; by halftime, Bardon was 7-3 ahead of El Milagro. In the second half, Andras Tombor’s lineup dominated their opponents, who struggled to remain in the game, but their efforts didn’t pay off.

By the start of the sixth chukka, the deal was said and done, with Bardon 12-5 up. At the end of the day, and after a very well played contest, Bardon produced one last goal to secure the 13-7 victory that led them to win the XIX Edition of the Julio Novillo Astrada Cup.

Meanwhile, the Subsidiary Trophy went to Forbes Plunkett, who defeated Santa Clara 14-12.

This Saturday and Sunday, the semi-finals of the season’s most prestigious polo tournament, the Argentine Open, will take place. For the first time in a while, a quick survey of the Argentine polo scene reveals that no one can make a firm, definitive prediction.

Four teams remain in contention: the defending champions La Dolfina Saudi, featuring Cambiaso father and son; the 2021 edition winners, the reformed La Natividad; the newcomer, Hilario Ulloa’s La Hache La Roca; and the disruptive force, La Ensenada Brubank. This time, neither match is a foregone conclusion, and the same holds true for the final on December 2, which will be played in front of 18,000 spectators. La Dolfina Saudi is likely to face the formidable La Hache, finalists in Hurlingham and Tortugas, and the overall leaders in the Triple Corona. However, the result of the Hurlingham final tips in La Dolfina’s favor.

The other semi-final isn’t a sure bet for La Natividad either. Lolo Castagnola, father of Jeta (the Open’s top scorer so far with 25 goals) and Barto, cautions about the upcoming final: “There’s still a semi-final next Saturday against La Ensenada, and with them, nothing is certain, so I remain cautious.” La Ensenada, known for their upsets in the Triple Corona, haven’t pulled one off this year yet. But in Tortugas, they were defeated by La Natividad (10-14). This season, every team has beaten every other at some point, and the match is expected to be tight among the three heavyweights, who enter the field with 40 goals (La Dolfina), 39 goals (La Natividad), and 36 goals (La Hache).

Also interesting is the battle for survival at the bottom of the rankings. For La Esquina, of the Laprida brothers, relegation seems inevitable. La Irenita Clinova, the Fernandez Llorente brothers, can still save themselves if they manage to beat Ellerstina on Sunday. This year, without Facundo Pieres (now at La Natividad), Ellerstina has been a pale shadow of its former self. It’s sad to witness such a decline for a team that hosted – and sometimes won – so many finals in previous decades, including unforgettable classics against La Dolfina.

La Hache Cria (B team) will control their own destiny against La Esquina, while the young and engaging El Overo Z7 team will have their fate determined passively, as they are exempt from this final round.

The weekend’s games:

Saturday – Field 2 at 14:00

La Hache Cría y Polo: Rufino Bensadón 8, Carlos M. Ulloa 7, Facundo Sola 8, and Joaquín Pittaluga 8. Total: 31.

La Esquina La Mascota: Pascual Sáinz de Vicuña 6, Juan Zubiaurre 6, Magoo Laprida 8, and Iñaki Laprida 8. Total: 28.

Field 1 at 16:30

La Dolfina Saudi: Adolfo Cambiaso 10, Pelon Stirling 10, Poroto Cambiaso 10, and Juan M. Nero 10. Total: 40.

La Hache La Roca: Polito Pieres 9, Hilario Ulloa 9, Sapo Caset 9, and Fran Elizalde 9. Total: 36.

Sunday – Field 2 – 14:00

Ellerstina Yellow Rose: Bautista Bayugar 8, Gonzalito Pieres 9, Nicolás Pieres 9, and Nachi du Plessis 9. Total: 35.

La Irenita Clinova: Facundo Fernández Llorente 8, Tomás Fernández Llorente 8, Matías Torres Zavaleta 8, and Isidro Strada 8. Total: 32.

Field 1 – 16:30

La Natividad: Facundo Pieres 9, Jeta Castagnola 10, Pablo Mac Donough 10, and Barto Castagnola 10. Total: 39.

La Ensenada Brubank: Juan Britos 9, Alfredo Bigatti 9, Juan M. Zubía 9, and Jeró del Carril 8. Total: 35.

Standings ahead of the final two rounds.

The bottom two in the standings will exit the Open 2024, while the

8th-placed team will face a playoff match against the Copa Camara winners.

With only 5 matches left to play in the 130th HSBC Argentine Open Polo, here are the points each team has accumulated for the 2023 Triple Corona Ranking.

The single-elimination, four-team tournament opens Monday with two games at 10 a.m. (Casablanca vs. Audi) and 3 p.m. (Maltese Falcons vs. Grand Champions) on Field 3 with the winners advancing into the championship final on Wednesday at 3 p.m. on Field 2.

Team rosters are:

Maltese Falcons (18): Melissa Ganzi, Alejandro Novillo Astrada, 7, Nic Roldan, 8, Juan Bollini, 3.

Casablanca (20): Grant Ganzi, 3, Jason Crowder, 5, Martin Jauregui, 6, Sugar Erskine, 6.

Grand Champions (20): Pablo Spinacci, 6, Pablo Dorignac, 4, Tomacho Pieres, 6, Juancito Bollini, 4.

The USPA North American Cup is the club‘s first of two 20-goal tournaments of the fall season with a rich tradition in history dating back to 1974. The second high goal tournament is the upcoming USPA National 20 Goal.

The tournament has been a mainstay in American and Canadian polo for decades at the 16- to 20-goal level. The inaugural winner was Tulsa with Hall of Famers John T. Oxley and Billy Linfoot, Corky Linfoot and Jim MacGinley.

During the late 1990s and early 2000s Calgary Polo Club hosted the tournament with Millarville dominating the competition. The tournament has been held at Grand Champions since 2011 and in 2019 made its debut at Aspen Valley Polo Club before returning to Grand Champions in 2020.

Last year Santa Rita knocked off two-time defending champion Casablanca. Santa Rita (Melissa Ganzi, 0, Nic Roldan, 8, Alejandro Novillo Astrada, 7, Juan Bollini, 3) led from start to finish for a 12-9 victory over Casablanca (Tomacho Pieres, 6, Jason Crowder, 5, Grant Ganzi, 3, Juan Sanchez Elia, 5). Roldan scored a game-high five goals and was MVP.

In 2021, Casablanca (Grant Ganzi, 3, Kris Kampsen, 6, Jeff Hall, 6, Tommy Biddle, 5) took a 7-3 halftime lead and went on to defeat Seminole Casino Coconut Creek (Melissa Ganzi, Jason Crowder, Santiago Toccalino, Juan Bollini, sub. Brandon Phillips, sub. Pablo Spinacci), 12-7. Biddle was MVP.

In 2020, Casablanca (Grant Ganzi, Henry Porter, Juancito Bollini, Nic Roldan) defeated Newport (Gene Goldstein, Sugar Erskine, Michel Dorignac, Juan Bollini), 14-9.

In 2019, Aspen-based La Karina (Brian Boyd, Carlitos Gracida, Sebastian Merlos, Kris Kampsen) led from start-to-finish to defeat McClure River Ranch (Hilario Figueras, 3, Pablo Spinacci, 6, Nic Roldan, Stewart Armstrong) with a stunning 15-12 victory to win its‘ 20-goal tournament debut at Aspen Valley Polo Club. It was the first USPA 20-goal tournament ever played in the Rocky Mountains.

In 2018 in a wild finish, Travieso rallied in the second half to win. Trailing by five goals at halftime, Travieso (Tony Calle, Grant Ganzi, Juan Cruz Merlos, Pite Merlos) staged an incredible comeback for a stunning 14-13 overtime victory over Audi (Wes Finlayson, Brandon Phillips, Pablo Spinacci, Marc Ganzi) in one of the most exciting finishes in tournament history.
