The new edition of POLO+10 is here, and we couldnt be prouder. The captivating blend of tournaments, intriguing polo personalities, and lifestyle beckons you to once again immerse yourself in the fascinating world of polo.

Welcome to another fascinating issue of POLO+10 WORLD, in which we once again explore the world of polo in all its diversity and cultural richness.

At the centre of this issue is our in-depth conversation with Wolfgang Weiss, the founder of the Polo & Country Club Gut Seeburg. Weiss discusses his beginnings in polo in 1987 in Berlin-Frohnau, his passionate collection of polo documents and memorabilia covering over 100 years of German polo history, and the challenges and achievements he has experienced along the way. His story is not only a personal chronicle, but also reflects the development of polo in Germany.

Another highlight of this issue is the interview with the patron of the Standing Rock Polo Team, Philipp Mueller, who reveals his philosophy behind the success of the young and dynamic team. The balance of sporting discipline, dedication to quality, and familial team spirit makes Standing Rock a vibrant and most inspirational team on the international polo fields. The plans for the coming season and the efforts to promote fair play and community involvement are setting new standards in the sport of polo.

As always, Polo Park Zurich is an integral part of our coverage, whose continued support and commitment to the sport of polo are indispensable, not forgetting the global polo events that take us from the snowy fields of Aspen to the vibrant tournaments in Argentina.

We hope that this issue of POLO+10 WORLD will inspire you and give you deep insights into the world of polo, which is far more than a game — it is a way of life that connects people around the world.

Thomas Wirth, Founder and Publisher of POLO+10, extends a warm welcome to all readers.

Ready for a movie: A time-out like in a blockbuster Untouched sandy beach, tropical flora and 3,500 Aldabra giant tortoises: A beach day at Anse Parc on Fregate Island Private resembles a cinematic scene

Picturesque nature, dense tropical forests and large reptiles that play the main role: What sounds like the description of the blockbuster “Jurassic Park” is reality on the private Seychelles island Fregate Island Private. Whoever lands here by helicopter not only enters an exotic-tropical natural paradise, but also feels transported back to a time in which humans were far from existing. With a size of two square kilometers and only 17 private villas, guests on Fregate Island Private reside in absolute seclusion, while 3,500 leisurely Aldabra giant tortoises call the island their home – and anyone who finds their way through the dense jungle resembling Jurassic Park to the beach Anse Parc feels transported to a film backdrop here at the latest. Further information is available at www.fregate.com.

With a total of seven dream beaches and a diverse range of endemic flora and fauna, guests on Fregate immerse themselves in an absolute natural paradise – even a visit to the beach is like an exciting adventure! Thanks to its geological location, the island has powder-white sandy beaches in front of spectacular granite rocks, while blockbuster fans get their money’s worth in a special bay – the western coast of Fregate is like a cinematic backdrop that could have sprung from a Jurassic Park strip. But to get to the remote stretch of beach, you first go on a discovery tour: either on your own or on a guided tour with the island’s conservation team off the beaten track – one leads along the Tortoise Trail.

On the approximately one-hour hiking trail there are not only endemic bird species to be discovered, because the trail leads past a turtle graveyard and through dense jungle, where in the middle of the tropical green is a 300-year-old pirate ruin. The trail continues through dense, untouched forests of palm trees and endemic Takamaka trees. Whoever hears a loud hissing sound here will most likely encounter one of the many turtles retreating into their shell a few steps later – this is not a defense mechanism, however, the hissing sound is produced when the neck is pulled into the shell. Every single path of the island’s eleven kilometers of hiking trails is due to the gentle giants, who have found their way through the wild botany to the sea and thus developed their own routes. At the end of the path you can already see the glittering sea, which meets black rocks here at Anse Parc and underscores the natural beach spectacle. Sun-seekers are then spoilt for choice: let their gaze wander across the ocean to the neighboring Seychelles Islands or listen to the Aldabra giant tortoises and watch them roam the film set.

Greetings and a very warm welcome to my “speakers corner” in the next edition of the new POLO+10 World.

I’d like to start by saying that 2020 has without doubt been one of the most memorable years of our lives for all of us. A year which has forced everyone to reflect on how we got here and very much think about what the future holds. I hope that you and your families are safe and well in these very uncertain times and that we can all get back to living happy and exciting lives very soon 🤙🏼.

As far as “reflection” goes, for me 2020 marks a 10 year anniversary which has brought back some very happy memories. The amazing people I’ve met over the years, the friendships that were made, the wonderful places I’ve been fortunate enough to see and get to know. Polo has taken me to over 16 countries many of which I had never visited before and introduced me to new cultures and different ways of thinking.

I’ve also been very fortunate to have worked and been involved in polo in so many different ways. When I came to the the UK back in 1998 and worked for Champagne Pommey, surly you remember the team John William Manconi, Piki Alberti, Juan Bollini and Henry Brett wining the British Open Gold Cup In 1999. It was a perfect day, especially as the Tournament main sponsor was Veuve Cliquot.

Later then working for one the pioneers of English Polo, Brian Morrison and his Captain Michael Amoore at the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club. I owe everything to the infamous Steve Thompson who got me in the saddle and taught me how to ride. Thanks Steve, you did a great job.

It was The Captain Michael Amoore who once said to me during a riding lesson “try not to look like a constipated b*****d when you ride a horse” I will always remember that, thanks Michael.

After several years working as a coach, umpire and player it was then on to setting up MIG Polo which was launched back in 2004 and is still going strong today. Having provided the worlds largest mobile screens at all of the UK’s major polo tournaments and on Finals day of the British Open – The Gold Cup.

It was Daniel Waechter who on a sunny Sunday afternoon at Guards Polo Club approached me and asked if I would like to come out to Klosters and commentate a snow polo tournament. I kindly accepted his offer and this challenge to venture into an area of Polo I had previously never considered or thought about. The name “The Voice of Polo” was then given to me by POLO+10.

During the last 10 years I have met and worked with some incredible people in this sport. The common dominator always being the passion for the game. It has been such a pleasure being part of so many great teams again and again and contributing, where I could, in developing any of the tournaments I attended.

It really has been an exciting and thrilling decade and there are so many people I’d like to thank for supporting me and believing in me over the years. It would be too many to mention here (also in case I forgot someone) but I’m sure you know who you are…..

Thank you once again for the last amazing 10 years and being your voice of Polo.

I’m more than ready for the next 10 years.

Danielle recently graduated from Harvard with a degree in Germanic Languages & Literatures. While studying at Harvard she began playing polo in her sophomore year and eventually represented the women’s varsity & mixed team in matches across the East Coast and abroad in China, Mongolia and Italy. #3 Vero Beach, FL native Tiffany Busch will be playing position number three requiring her to organize plays for her team. She will need to remain central to the team’s offence and defence, while remaining poised to establish set plays and look for passing opportunities to her team mates. Tiffany is a veteran of the game and was introduced to polo through her father, Peter Busch of Anheuser-Busch fame. She’s since grown to become an icon in women’s polo today. Tiffany rose to the top of the women’s rankings with fierce determination and natural talent. Supported by an ever growing string of horses, she brings her unique style and competitive spirit to the field in every game she plays. She also played in the 2017 Women’s Argentine Open and won the 2019 Women’s Texas Open for Team PoloGear.

#4 Middleburg, VA native, Clarissa Echezarreta will be playing position number four as our defensive back. This position requires anticipating how best to defend our goal with her well developed riding skills to ride off her opponents and hit strong back handers to her teammates. Clarissa has won numerous tournaments incl. the multiple Women’s Championship Tournaments and played in both the Women’s U.S. Open and the Women’s Argentine Open. In women’s polo Clarissa is one of the most respected position number four players in the world.

Preparation, Mentoring & Warm-up tournaments:

Team PGCC’s path to Houston has been one of dedication to support women’s polo and is spearheaded by Dawn Jones together with PoloGear’s very own Gary Fellers and Jeanette Sassoon. The prize they have their eyes on is the USPA Texas Women’s Open title. Strategically PGCC participated in two warm up tournaments, allowing preparations of some of the team’s horses, two of which were recently flown over from Argentina, whilst giving other promising players a chance to compete at the sharp end of the sport.

On August 28th a PGCC team competed in the Santa Ynez Sunny Hale Women’s Invitational lower flight 8-12 goal consolation finals. Zoe Cookson from Northampton, UK; Dawn Jones; 17-year old Taylor Olcott from San Luis Obispo, CA and Jenny Alter from Miami, FL defeated the very competitive JC Polo team to win 5-3. Many thanks to Megan and Memo Gracida and the entire La Herradura organization for hosting such a well planned women’s tournament in memory of the much beloved and respected Sunny Hale. Between September 4th – 6th a PGCC team participated in the prestigious 2nd Annual Women’s Pacific Coast Open at the Santa Barbara Polo Club, CA. The final day was an excellent day for USA women’s polo! Its success continues to develop and keeps drawing attention to women in polo.

For this tournament Team PGCC selected the following players: Santa Barbara native, Public Policy and Economics student Cory Williams, who together with team member Kendall Plank were title holders of the Cup in 2019; Licensed Texas attorney and horse welfare advocate Pamela Flanagan, who was 2019 Women’s U.S. Open Champion and recipient of the tournament’s Amateur MVP; Dawn Jones and the quartet was completed by Kendall Plank, who holds a degree in Leadership with minors in Business and Communications and is currently working for LC Design Studio to develop her business skills. Together with her mother, Susan Plank she founded and established Dec My Room, a non profit charity dedicated to enhancing the lives of pediatric cancer patients during their treatment and healing whilst hospitalized.

Despite giving their best efforts in the consolation finals, they were not able to convert for a win. All the players relished the chance to play at the women’s 20 goal level. The PoloGear Coffee Company banner served as an excellent learning experience to improve booth individually and as a team. As is typical with women’s polo all attended an exciting final in a show of support to their friends participating. Then two birthdays were celebrated for team Timing’s number 4, Sofia Lorenzo and our team mate, Kendall Plank.

The French Championships traditionally close the French grass season. Fifteen days after a memorable French Open, the Domaine de Chantilly Polo Club hosted this time the final of this Championship “6-8 goals” where the Parisian team of Sainte-Mesme kept its title and after a very close match (9 at 8½).

Usually, these finals are played at the Polo de Paris, on the traditional “lawn” of Bagatelle, which hosted polo at the 1924 Paris Olympic Games. But the rain having been generous these last few days, the polofield already very much solicited during the qualifying phase was… tired. And it is quite natural that the Polo de Chantilly received the semi-finals yesterday and this final on Sunday afternoon. The eight polofields of this flagship French polo club allow to alternate the matches which can take place on grounds that are perfect for horses. Fourteen teams were entered in this competition, six in the Paris zone and eight in the Chantilly zone, a sign of the good health of French polo.

For these finals, the main field “Honneur 1” had been preserved throughout the week. Despite the presence of Argentinean professionals (maximum two per team) allowed in this competition, there were seven Frenchmen in the final of this Championship and it was a 100% French team that won. Sainte-Mesme had father and son, Birger and Robert Strom, the young French professional trained in Chantilly, Louis Jarrige and the excellent young arena player, Victor Louarn. Opposite, only one Argentinian, Nacho Kennedy, a brilliant attacker at the French Open, and three Frenchmen, Jérôme Hue, Charlotte Garaud, the only woman in this final and her brother Florent wore the colors of Omédia Paris/Black Mamba. A difficult match that ended with the smallest gap (9 at 8½). The French 5-goaler, Robert Strom, who converted a decisive 60 yards penalty at the end of the game, was expecting such a challenge: “It’s true that this final was difficult, there were very good teams in the Chantilly zone and we knew that the one that would make it to the final would be tough. In addition, they started with a goal and a half lead that we had to overcome. Opposite, Nacho Kennedy made a big match like the huge season he just made in France. I must say that I was very well accompanied because I have the chance to play with these two young Frenchmen, Louis (Jarrige, 23 years-old) and Victor (Louarn, 19 years-old). The latter is a bit of a revelation. We discovered him this winter in the arena with my brother-in-law, Clemente (Zavaleta, Argentine h7, Ndr). We knew that at handicap 0, it was a good ‘pickaxe’ and at each match of this French championship, he played better and better. As for Louis Jarrige, he’s still our favorite French player. We have been following him for some time, he came with us to Sotogrande. For me, it is French talent that has the greatest future”.

It is also the nice side of this beautiful team of Sainte-Mesme, which we see on all the big fields of the world (it will be in Argentina this winter to play the Copa Camara) but which gives young French players the opportunity to express themselves and to progress.

Sainte-Mesme: Robert Strom (h5, 4 goals), , Birger Strom (h0), Louis Jarrige (h3, 2 goals), Victor Louarn (h0, 3 goals)

Omédia Paris/Black Mamba: Charlotte Garaud (h0), Jérôme Hue (h-1), Nacho Kennedy (h4, 7 goals), Florent Garaud (h 3)

Progression Sainte-Mesme: (0/1½) – 3/2½ – 6-5½ – 7/6½ and 9/8½

Top scorer of the final: Nacho Kennedy who scored all 7 goals of his team Omédia Paris-Black Mamba.
