WELLINGTON, Fla., March 14, 2022 — Audi continues to dominate the World Polo League‘s fourth season.

Audi (Marc Ganzi, 2, Jeta Castagnola, 9, Barto Castagnola, 9, Paco de Narvaez, 6) broke open a close game in the fifth chukker to defeat Seminole Casino Coconut Creek (Melissa Ganzi, 0, Gonzalito Pieres, 10, Juan Martin Zubia, 8, Alejandro Novillo Astrada, 8), 13-9, Sunday at windswept Grand Champions Polo Club.

Audi finished the two-week, nine-team tournament undefeated with a 4-0 record. Seminole Casino Coconut Creek, the wildcard entry, finished 2-2.

Paco de Narvaez.

„It feels really good to win another tournament,“ Ganzi said. „The team is functioning really well. Everyone played a long list of horses today so now it‘s about preserving the horses and making sure we can get to the next one and one more after that.“

Paco de Narvaez, playing one of his best games of the season, particularly in the second half, was named Most Valuable Player.

Nelita, played by Barto Castagnola, was selected the World Polo League Best Playing Pony.

Gonzalito Pieres and Barto Castagnola.

Open Lujuria, played by Gonzalito Pieres, was selected Associon Argentina Criadores de Caballo de polo.

Catwoman, played by Jeta Castagnola and owned by Santa Rita Polo Farm, was the American Polo Horse Association Best Playing Pony.

Seminole Casino Coconut Creek jumped out to a 2-1 lead behind goals by Zubia and Pieres, the first of his five penalty conversions. Audi had a 2-1 second chukker with a Ganzi penalty conversion  and goal by Jeta Castagnola to tie 3-3 after the second chukker.

Juan Martin Zubia and Jeta Castagnola.

Audi, dominating the bowl-ins, took a 7-5 halftime lead outscoring Seminole Casino Coconut Creek, 4-2. Pieres cut Audi‘s lead to one, 7-6, with another penalty conversion but it was the closest Seminole Casino Coconut Creek would get.

Audi, winning 80 percent of the bowl-ins throughout the game, was a well-oiled machine in the fifth chukker with a 4-1 chukker and 11-7 lead headed into the final chukker.

DeNarvaez, working hard on defense setting up the Castagnola brothers, scored to open the sixth chukker for a 12-7 advantage. Seminole Casino Coconut Creek was unable to mount more than two offensive attacks for goals.

Guests enjoyed a delicious cake from Beth Townsend at Cake Effects Bakery.

„They had a couple of chances to go up by one or two and they missed a couple penalties,“ Ganzi said. „I think we‘ve always demonstrated that we can capitalize on other teams‘ mistakes. The boys jumped on a couple loose plays and we got two quick goals off two plays where they should have scored goals.

„If you think about it in a game that‘s pretty tight that‘s a four-goal swing really fast and I think that was the big difference. Both teams played really hard. It was a really close game. In the fifth chukker had they gotten those two penalty fours it‘s tied going into the sixth and it‘s anyone‘s game. Instead, we go the other way and we score a goal and get that two, three-goal cushion and it was tough for them to recover.“

„The Borin Brothers“ treated guests to live music during halftime.

Audi got balanced scoring from its lineup. Jeta Castagnola scored a team-high five goals. Barto Castagnola and Ganzi each had three goals and de Narvaez added two second-half goals.

Pieres scored a game-high six goals for Seminole Casino Coconut Creek. Novilla Astrada had two goals and Zubia added one.

Last year Ganzi, Jeta Castagnola and de Narvaez were members of the winning Richard Mille team in the Founders Cup.

Alejandro Novillo Astrada, Jeta Castagnola, and Barto Castagnola.

Audi and Seminole Casino Coconut Creek advanced into the championship with one-goal wins in the semifinals.

Audi defeated defending champion Richard Mille (Santos Bollini, 2, Paquito de Narvaez, 2, Pablo MacDonough, 10, Juan Martin Nero, 10), 10-9 in overtime.

Audi begins its quest for a third WPL title this week when it opens play Wednesday against Richard Mille. Seminole Casino Coconut Creek‘s first game is Thursday against Brookshire.

The race is on between Juan Bollini of Seminole Casino Coconut Creek and Peke Neutzet of La Indiana.

While La Indiana came within one goal four times in the last two chukkers, Seminole Casino Coconut Creek never trailed. Jeff Hall looked to score the tying goal with 11 seconds left in the game, but was called for a turning foul by umpire Gaston Dorignac. Crowder and Phillips combined for seven goals with Crowder scoring a team-high four goals. Hall scored a game-high five goals. „It‘s great to be back,“ Crowder said.

Later in the afternoon in a competitive three-team round robin, World Polo League, led by big-hitting Tommy Biddle, looked to be the team to beat. World Polo League pulled away for a 4-1 lead early in the second chukker. Biddle connected on a 150-yard goal in the opening chukker and 80-yard goal early in the second chukker.“I‘m really excited about being back at Grand Champions,“ Biddle said. „It‘s been a couple years since I‘ve played here and I‘m really looking forward to it with all these good players.“

Roldan scored the game-winner with 33 seconds left. Goldstein and Roldan each had two goals. Erskine had a game-high three goals.

Grant Ganzi scores for Newport.

In the third and deciding game, World Polo League, after sitting out three chukkers, lost its momentum in a defensive battle. After a 1-1 opening chukker, Ganzi‘s penalty conversion gave NetJets a 2-1 lead. Spinacci and Biddle took turns scoring goals before Mandelbaum blocked a hardhit Biddle goal attempt and raced downfield to score with 20 seconds left for a 4-2 lead. NetJets continued its dominance in the final chukker pulling away for a 6-2 lead after Mandelbaum stole the ball and scored his fourth goal of the game.

The Fall Classic is the first of four medium tournaments. Four high goal tournaments are also scheduled for the fall. The highlight of the fall season is the Nov. 27 doubleheader with the Carlos Gracida Memorial Legends of Polo and International Cup. Sponsorship packages are available.

Tommy Biddle of World Polo League moves in to defend.

„The fall season gives American players who don‘t have a chance to go to Argentina an opportunity to improve their polo and keep them playing year-round,“ Bollini said. „It‘s a chance for players to see how good their green horses are and which ones make the cut.“

Grand Champions Polo Club kickstarted Pride month, which runs through the end of June, by hosting a spectacular dinner and polo match to promote the values of equality and diversity and celebrate the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community (LGBTQ).

Josh Cohen, Marc Ganzi, Sidra Smith, Violet Camacho, Dani Campbell, and Omar Hernandez.

The Pride events began Friday evening with a dinner staged at Santa Rita Polo Farm. Following delicacies including a crispy skin duck breast, yellowfin tuna tart and Colorado lamb chops, each paired with a carefully curated wine selection, guests enjoyed a panel discussion titled „Inclusion and Healing“ moderated by ESPN West Palm broadcaster and personality Josh Cohen.

Horacio Heguy steals the play from Petra Sobotova

Seminole Casino Coconut Creek got off to a good start by consistently winning throw-ins, but it took almost four minutes of play before Melissa Ganzi put their first goal on the board. With just over a minute left on the clock, Petra Sobotova took the ball from the nearside to the right and put it through to maintain Orea’s three-goal margin and end the chukker 4- 1. Seminole Casino Coconut Creek kept Orea away from the goal in the second period, while Ganzi scored her team’s first goal with a neat under-the-neck shot. Alejandro Novillo Astrada contributed back-to-back goals to even things up and the period ended 4-4. Seminole Casino Coconut Creek‘s strategy of keeping Ganzi in front to score paid off again in the third chukker as she took the ball through to put another goal on the board, but a Penalty 2 conversion from Petra Sobotova ended the half at 5-all.

Seminole Casino Coconut Creek picked up the pace in the fourth chukker, with Ganzi offering up a pair of goals to put her team in the lead for the first time during the match. Pablo Pulido was the first to score from the field, with Juancito Bollini following up. Pulido knocked the ball through the posts one more time to end the first chukker with Sebucan in the lead by 4-0. Newport fared no better in the second chukker, while Marc Ganzi took Sebucan up to five. Finally, in the third chukker, Newport’s Grant Ganzi scored the first goal of the day for his team. However, two more goals by Pulido and Bollini ended the half with Sebucan leading by six goals at 7-1.

There must have been a rousing speech in the Newport tent at halftime because the team in white came back energized. Gene Goldstein put the first goal of the second half on the board, with a follow-up from Grant Ganzi. Turning the tables on Sebucan, Newport rallied with a strong defense to prevent them from scoring. Each team managed only one goal in the pentultimate chukker, but Newport came back on fire in the final with Goldstein, Pieres and Grant Ganzi scoring consecutive goals to pull Newport within two at 7-9. A final effort from Marc Ganzi saw Sebucan win the match 10-7.

The jerseys worn by the players in the Celebrity Cup were to be signed and auctioned raising $23,000 divided among the three charities.
