Polo News

(this article was published on 30 April 2013)

Hurlingham, a few kilometers away from frantic Buenos Aires, has an air of mystique. A traditional town of English immigrants, this place was visited by royalty, celebrities and top polo players because of a very special place: a workshop. This workshop is none other but the home of the best polo boots in the world. The Fagliano family, who has been running the shop since is beginnings, opened their doors for POLO+10.
Once you go past the Fagliano doors, the smell of leather impregnating the air, the machinery, the endless shelves containing boot molds of all sizes, surely make you acknowledge you are in a very special place, that has a story that deserves to be told. Eduardo and Hector Fagliano, are the 4th generation of boot makers, and with their father Rodolfo, and Eduardo’s son, Germán, they run the shop as their great grandparents used to.

The Faglianos have made and keep on making all their boots entirely by hand, with the processes and machinery they inherited, and without the aid of the latest technologies. Nowadays, in the age of mass production, the Fagliano boots have countless reasons that make them so outstanding. This undeniable appeal has brought to their door members of the English Royal Family, The Sultan of Brunei (who, by the way, was so impressed by the product, that ordered 120 pairs of boots at once), and even the actor Tommy Lee Jones, amongst the best polo players such as Adolfo Cambiaso.

This work philosophy called Julius Bär’s attention: the private bank understands both the sense uniqueness that comes, among others, through the respect for tradition. Fagliano’s essence and long-run heritage, together with the special dedication to each client in a most personal way, is perfectly related to the way that they run personal assets management in the prestigious bank. Thus, this resulted on an alliance, in which Eduardo Fagliano himself participated of the Julius Bär add campaign and they were chosen to be sponsored by the bank, joined together by one commitment: excellence.

Even Jaeger-LeCoultre, the luxury watch manufacturer, in 2011 celebrated the anniversary of their product Reverso (released in 1931) by a special edition with a handmade strap made by this craftmen family. Fagliano’s name is getting more recognized through their excellence day by day and their acceptance is growing steadily worldwide.

The Founder of POLO+10, Thomas Wirth, was able to speak with Eduardo Fagliano, who kindly answered some of our questions:

What do you think that is the key factor that makes Fagliano boots so special? Do you believe it is the quality, the expertise that has endured for more than 100 years, the materials you use….or maybe your (very) singular customers?
Fagliano started with the arrival from Italy of my great grandparents, and, here, in Hurlingham, Buenos Aires, we have been working since 1892, so its more than 120 years of experience. I believe the key factor is the material selection. We always are very thorough in selecting the best quality to make every pair, according to what our clients expect and, of course, by accomplishing to make the whole process by hand, that also ensures the best quality.

What do you and your family feel when a special client crosses your doors? You are famous to have handcrafted boots for royalty, celebrities, top polo players… There must be some nervousness still when you get their visit!
It is such a great experience every time we get a special visit, and we are really touched by it, and it is a reminder of the recognition that we have accomplished through all these years. Nevertheless, we believe that all clients should be treated like kings, and we bear that in mind always.

Which is the most singular pair of boots you had to make by request?
Well, we sure had a lot… some of them include embroidering in leather club logos, monograms, initials, but there’s always a new challenge coming up!

You are three generations working at the same time, in the same workshop, a family setting a honest example of tradition and passion about what they do. Which do you think were they key factors in your upbringing that made you feel the exact same passion your ancestors did?
We’ve been visiting the workshop ever since we were small kids, as our father did (he was born right here), and through watching our family work, we could experience how passionately they worked, thinking about how rewarding it was to do something that would be received by the client with deep affection. We started learning since early age, the very first steps, cutting the leather, or pinning nails everywhere, small tasks that gave us the possibility to learn the job, though you can never finish the learning process, there is always something new to discover. Our mentors always were open to our new ideas, because we always had the same goal: do our best, and keep on excelling the final product.

We know that you studied some engineering too. Did you ever think of starting a separate project or you just felt that more knowledge would complement your craft?
I have studied Mechanical Engineering in the Universidad Tecnológica Nacional for four years, but I have not finished it. Nonetheless, I was able to expand my knowledge in that years, that absolutely complemented my work here at the shop.

For the future, which are your expectations for the business?
Our will for the future is to continue with our quality standards, without rushing but also without stopping the progress. We sure hope our future generations, if they want, and God willing, keep the work with the same passion and dedication that we transmit to them.

And last question, how do you feel about Polo becoming more and more popular these days, do you feel it will lose its “élite sport” essence?
There is a special attraction to polo, and it was always that way. Nowadays, it is easier to start practicing it since amateur levels, the Polo fever has spread widely and it is easier to contact people that are involved in the sport and get you into it. I personally believe that the “elite sport” concept refers more specifically to put always first the principles of purity, quality and excellence in every aspect of polo. From our place in the polo world, we support that principles and hope that people keep working to keep that essence.

“Keep the essence”, “purity” and “excellence”, three adjectives that Eduardo Fagliano used for describing polo, unintentionally described the work that he and his family have been doing for so long. The Faglianos certainly know what polo is about, and live up to every aspect of it, in every pair of boots they make with such care and passion.

About Fagliano
Casa Fagliano is specialized in shoe manufacturing, specifically adapted to horse riding or country activities. The result is an “almost everlasting” product. The best leather, the best thread, also the best soles and the use of certain tools for manufacturing, together with the most detailed production process, gives as a result an superior product that stands by itself.

History of the Fagliano family
In 1892, Pedro and Giacomina Fagliano, Italian inmigrants, started their workshop in Hurlingham Buenos Aires. With much effort and work, their perfect craftsmanship grew famous, which spread throughout the world. Their sons, Antonio, Santiago, Pedro and José continued to run the shop. In 1924, Eduardo Alighieri arrived from Sicily, contributed with his knowledge and experience. Pedro’s son, Rodolfo, was born in 1929 and together with his two sons, Eduardo and Héctor, is nowadays running the business. They have specialized in shoe manufacturing, following the european traditions and an entirely handmade production, and also a special care of quality and detail. More than 120 years of steady experience and excellence, that cannot be overlook by any polo lover.

Six nations, including three newcomers to Chantilly, ten teams, twenty-five games, including those of the subsidiary cup won by Italy, ten days of tournament action ending in a beautiful final won by the French team from Occitanie. This is the outcome of the second Polo Nations Cup, now firmly established in the European calendar of prestigious competitions. This is the kind of tournament a captain wants to add to their list of achievements. On Sunday, that lucky captain was a Frenchwoman, Isabelle Larenaudie.

Over the past five years, Isabelle Larenaudie has built this fine Occitan team, known as Tédélou in other tournaments, around two Argentinian brothers who grew up playing polo at the Polo Club du Domaine de Chantilly. Simon and Ramiro Zavaleta are French at heart and speak the language fluently. This brotherhood is the strength of this team, which is completed by the talented Breton Jules Legoubin. From the outset, the French team took control of the match, leaving little room for the star of the Pakistan team, handicap 7 Tito Ruiz Guiñazo: „We had a plan for Tito,“ reveals Simon Zavaleta, „to neutralise him at all costs. Nobody was going to mark him in particular, but as soon as someone was near him, he had to be taken out at all costs.” The plan worked well, especially for Simon, who scored 7 of his team‘s 8 goals, including a sublime golaso in the second chukker, and was rightly named MVP of the final: „On an individual level, it is a great reward, but this is above all a team performance. There were five of us who won this title, including Nicolas Corti Maderna, who replaced me in the semi-final when I was ill, and who qualified us for this final“. Unbeaten throughout the tournament, the team always led until Pakistan came back to 7-6 in the final chukker: „But Ramiro scored a magnificent goal at that point to give us a two-point lead and definitively some breathing space. I think it was a great game for the fans. Now we‘re not going to stop there: we want to win the Trophée du Coquetier d‘Or next week, then the Coupe d‘Or in Deauville in August, and the Open de France here in Chantilly in September. Everything!” An insatiable young Argentinian.

This summer: an „Olympic“ France against United States, followed by a promising Open de France

The Polo Nations Cup 2024 marked the end of the first half of the season, with the prospect of a summer full of high-level events at the Polo Club du Domaine de Chantilly just around the corner. The nations will once again be in the spotlight on 7 August with the Paris Games Polo Challenge 2024, a test match between the national teams of France and the United States which, right in the middle of the Olympic Games, will commemorate the great era when polo was part of the Olympic programme. In 1924 in particular, the Olympic tournament kicked off with a game opposing France and the USA… largely dominated by the Americans. A rematch 100 years on!

Then, in September, it‘s time for the flagship tournament of the French season, the 24th Open de France (4-22 September), for which twelve teams have already entered nine of the world‘s top forty players, including the title holder with Kazak, Nicola Pieres, a former winner of the Argentine Open. On 17 September, the women will be taking part in the French Women‘s Open, which will also feature top players such as the winners of the Argentine Women‘s Open, England‘s Hazel Jackson and Argentina‘s Lia Salvo. The aftermath of the Olympic Games will be just as sporting and just as enjoyable to savour for three weeks on the magnificent grounds of the Apremont Farm.

The final in numbers :

Occitanie – France (12): Isabelle LARENAUDIE 0, Jules LEGOUBIN 3, Simon ZAVALETA 5 (7 goals, including 2 penalties), Ramiro ZAVALETA 4 (1 goal).

Lahore – Pakistan (12) : Haider NASEEM 0, Elena VENOT 2 (1 goal), Hilario RUIZ GUINAZU 3 (1 goal), Tito RUIZ GUINAZU 7 (4 goals, dont 2 pénalités).

Progression France  : 2-1 / 3-1 / 5-2 / 7-4 / 8-6.

MVP by Majoa Paris  (Most Valuable Player) : Simon Zavaleta (France)

MVP Amateur by Majoa Paris : Haider Naseem (Pakistan)

Launched in 2023 at the Polo Club du Domaine de Chantilly under the auspices of the French Polo Federation (FFP), the Polo Nations Cup has immediately established itself as the most important early season event on the French international calendar and welcomed three new countries this year: Pakistan, the ancestral home of polo; Belgium, which is making a comeback on the world polo scene; and Italy, one of Europe‘s leading nations.

Ten teams from three continents and six nations: the Polo Nations Cup has taken off. Among the values of the Polo Club du Domaine de Chantilly, founded in 1995 by Patrick Guerrand-Hermès, that of friendship between peoples, to which it is attached, is given full expression by this innovative competition.

Over ten days, teams from the United States, Pakistan, Germany, Italy, Belgium and France will compete for this prestigious trophy. The teams will also include some of Argentina‘s top professionals, with famous names such as Tito Ruiz Guiñazu, a regular at the Argentine Open, Simon and Ramiro Zavaleta and Valentin Novillo Astrada, who come from great Argentine families and dynasties that have written the history of the sport.

Playing for South-East France, the PACA team, title holders and 100% French, is made up of three young players, Dorian Bulteau, Louis Jarrige and Julien Reynes, thanks to the loyal commitment of their captain, Jean-Claude Legrand. Other young French professionals will also be taking part, including the talented Elouan Badarello (aged 19), playing for the Americans from Illinois, and Jules Legoubin (Occitanie), who is making great strides this year. And let‘s not forget Elena Venot, a professional female player who holds a key role in mixed teams such as Pakistan, a country she played in last year and a team she is part of in this Polo Nations Cup. Some of these young talents will represent France in the commemorative match of the 1924 Paris Olympic Games against the United States next August.

Kick-off on 13 June with :

France (Rhône-Alpes) – Pakistan, followed by Italy – Germany (Hamburg).

The Hublot Polo Gold Cup Gstaad is a special time in the international polo calendar, an enchanted interlude on the world circuit. A unique world of intense competition and glamour in the heart of the magnificent Swiss Alps. At an altitude of 1,100 meters, in the unusual setting of the Gstaad/Saanen airport, this unique event promises four extraordinary days dedicated to the world‘s oldest team sport.

Much more than a tournament, the Hublot Polo Gold Cup Gstaad is a unique sporting event and a celebration of equestrian excellence and luxury. The number of teams wanting to take part in the tournament increases every year, making it a daunting task for the organizers to select those who will be lucky enough to set foot on this very special field.

This year, the Hublot Polo Gold Cup Gstaad will welcome a new team: first of all, a new partner, the prestigious investment bank J. SAFRA SARASIN, whose French captain Françoise Okala will be playing in Gstaad for the first time together with the Argentine Fanelli brothers as well as Horacio Fernández Llorente.

The GSTAAD PALACE will be represented this year by two Swiss brothers, Fabio and Luca Meier, who have often shone in Gstaad: will this be the year? Chances are good as they team up with Argentine brothers Adrian and Raul Laplacette. The latter, who has already won the Hublot Polo Gold Cup twice, knows this particular terrain like the back of his hand.

But the battle will be fierce. Swiss captains Philipp Müller and Cedric Schweri have opted for an all-British squad for their KIELDER AGRO GROUP team, including the formidable Max Charlton, a very fast and responsive player with his English horses. Charlton is an all-round player who shone on the snow in Saint-Moritz and has a handicap of 10 in arena polo! But he is just as impressive on grass: last year he won the traditional Westchester Cup in Wellington (USA), a high-goal match between Great Britain and the United States.

The team of title sponsor HUBLOT and German captain Jürgen Schröder, who was a finalist last year, will also be supported by a sibling pair – there will be four in total at this tournament – brothers Pedro and Manuel Fernández Llorente. The final will be broadcast on Pololine TV and there will be free access for the public, with children‘s play areas and catering.

A VIP experience

The Hublot Polo Gold Cup is not only a top-class sporting event, but also an exceptional experience on the sidelines with a VIP village (open to the public), exhibitors offering exclusive luxury products, the latest models from Aston Martin, as well as the latest model from Dassault Aviation, which will be exhibiting its brand new Falcon 6X at the airport, Albinati Aeronautics, Barnes… and of course Hublot, which will be presenting its new collections.

Celebrate the sport, its conviviality and its festive atmosphere in VIP style, with elegant lunches and refined cuisine prepared by the chefs of the Gstaad Palace, as well as a sumptuous gala dinner with entertainment from the band Dora on Stage.

All you have to do is book your place for this unforgettable experience at www.pologstaad.ch, because the Hublot Polo Gold Cup Gstaad is much more than just a tournament – it is an event not to be missed for lovers of refinement and thrills.

After a successful first edition in which the French PACA region beat South Korea, the Polo Club du Domaine de Chantilly announces a second Polo Nations Cup that will be even more competitive and international, with ten teams representing six nations.

In the world of equestrian sport, especially for the Olympic disciplines (show jumping, dressage and eventing), the Nations Cup is the flagship team event of a season and a federation. The Nations Cup is the only team class in the individual disciplines, alongside the team European and World Championships and of course the Olympic Games.

This high-profile concept had never existed in polo before, even though it is a team sport par excellence! The prospect of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris inspired the French Polo Federation (FFP) and the Polo Club du Domaine de Chantilly to create the Polo Nations Cup in 2023, a 12-goal tournament that opposes teams representing a nation, region or state.

Polo has always been part of the Olympic family and the FIP is a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). It has been an official discipline of the Olympic Games five times. First played at the 1900 Summer Games in Paris, it was dropped from the programme after the 1936 Summer Games in Berlin. An Anglo-American mixed team won the first gold medal in 1900, followed by Great Britain twice (1908 and 1920) and then Argentina (1924 and 1936).

Perhaps the Polo Nations Cup will allow us to gradually return to the glory days of polo at the Olympic Games, but above all it will attract the general public to the sidelines and continue the development of polo in France!

The 2024 edition of the Polo Nations Cup will take place from 13 to 23 June and will be contested by ten teams: Belgium, Pakistan, Italy, the German regions of Hamburg and Lower Saxony, the American states of Illinois and California and the French regions of PACA, Auvergne Rhône Alpes, Île-de-France and Occitanie. The basic rule is that the captain of each team must be a native of the nation or region under which they have registered. Some teams recruit mainly Argentinian reinforcements. For example, Tito Ruiz Guiñazu, one of the best players in the world, was a finalist wearing the Korean colours last year. This year, the „mercenary“ was recruited by Haider Nassem‘s Pakistan team. In the first edition, victory went to an all-French team, PACA, who will be back to defend their title this year. Another 100 per cent national team, the Hanseatic city of Hamburg, includes Heinrich Dumrath as well as the two Craseman brothers and their father Daniel.

The Polo Nations Cup is the highlight of the first half of the season in continental Europe. The French international season promises to be particularly rich this year with the Paris Games Polo Challenge 2024, a match between France and the USA in homage to the opening match of the 1924 Olympic tournament in Paris (on 7 August, see save-the-date below), and the eagerly awaited Open de France in September, the most competitive European tournament with twelve teams already entered. All this on the largest polo ground in France, if not in Europe (9 grass fields and the headquarters of the French Polo Federation), where access to all games is free.

La Republica Polo Club kicks off a new 3-day gig called Prague Urban Polo at a new address within the Czech Capital City on the 31. May.

Prague had multiple locations where polo was a thing, though La Republica Polo Club is trying to make it big at a new address called Cholupice, just 30 minutes south of Old Town Square. The club is accessible to anyone who loves horses and polo. Players from everywhere are welcome to come and play, stable horses, play low goal polo, and then go wild in the city center.

The tournament is called Prague Urban Polo and is being held for 3 days on 31.5. The aim is to attract a bigger audience by offering free entrance. The event description also makes this very clear: „We are a polo club, where everyone is welcome. And we would like you to be a part of it. You can wear a fancy hat or come in jeans, as long as you have a smile on your face“.

Just as Polo in Argentina, players and guests can enjoy street food including empanadas, burgers, beer, and wine accompanied by local DJs.

The field, not the biggest one, 190m long and 113m wide, will though be a field that can bring polo closer to the audience. Making it easier as well for the players, as teams will be 3 on each side. The event will be umpired by polo professional Maciek Olbrych from Poland and moderated by international polo speaker Jan Zavázal, who is mostly active as “The Polo Speaker” in Central Europe, though is home at La Republica Polo Club.
