Queen’s Cup Pink Polo 2020 concludes with memorable elegance as outstanding female riders win The Queen Mother’s royal cup

For the 12th consecutive year, the highly anticipated all-female charity polo tournament Queen’s Cup Pink Polo 2020 once again concluded on a high note. Organized by Dr. Harald Link, president of B.Grimm and Thailand Equestrian Federation, and Nunthinee Tanner, vice president of Thailand Equestrian Federation in association with U.S. Polo Assn., the Queen’s Cup Pink Polo 2020 was a tournament to win The Queen Mother’s royal cup and raise fund for The Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer Foundation on Saturday 22 February 2020 between 12pm to 6pm at Thai Polo & Equestrian Club Pattaya.

Nunthinee Tanner, vice president of Thailand Equestrian Federation, head of the organizing team, said that, “breast cancer is the number one cause of death of Thai women, and the casualty keeps increasing. A lot of breast cancer patients struggle with this illness without help or support, while many lack funding for treatment and spend their lives without home or caretakers. The charity Queen’s Cup Pink Polo that has been held for the past 12 consecutive years plays a crucial role in providing support for breast cancer patients through The Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer Foundation. We truly hope that with this all-female polo tournament, polo will be recognized and known more widely to the public and that women can come together to play sport and support a good cause.”

Contenders for this year’s tournament included four international teams, namely Marengo, La Familia, Ethiopian Airlines and the home team Thai Polo. The last two teams entered the semi final at 4.45pm to compete for The Queen Mother’s royal cup.

Besides the thrill on the polo pitch, Queen’s Cup Pink Polo 2020 also included a string of Saturday fun such as performance by RPCA Black Pipe Band and Yorkshire terrier parade by Yorkshire Terrier Club Thailand, led by Khun Namhom, HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya’s dog.

As sport spirits were high, so was the fashion of the distinguished celebrity guests who were all dressed in pink accented with the signature accessory of the polo tournament – hats of different shapes and styles. At the opening ceremony, Nunthinee Tanner, Thailand’s first lady polo player and head of the tournament organizing team, gracefully led riders into the pitch, followed by a parade of Thailand’s top celebrities. After the second chukka, the tradition of Stomping Divots commenced to smoothen the grassy pitch and erase the horses’ footprint. The stomping was also delightfully joined by female spectators of all ages. This year, luxury supercar McLaren led the riders into the pitch of Queen’s Cup Pink Polo 2020 for the final round.

The event culminated to the award presentation of Best Dress Award and Best Hat Award for guests with stunning outfit and hat respectively. Winner of Best Dress Award Men was Chalin Hattakijkowit, while Peerapatra Chaovalit won the Best Dress Award Women. As for the Best Hat Award, the winner was Narisa Kubota. Last but not least was the award ceremony for the winning team of Queen’s Cup Pink Polo 2020, which was La Familia that beat Marengo at 7-5. The event concluded with magnificent firework show that capped off the yearly polo showdown with memorable fun and extravagance.

12 years on and the Queen’s Cup Pink Polo never loses its style, fun and grandeur. Most importantly, it’s the unique event where the guests get the chance to enjoy professional polo in warm, inviting atmosphere and at the same time raise fund for a good cause every year.

Founded in December 2009, the Polo Club Ascona invites to spectacular polo tournaments in the picturesque surroundings of Lake Maggiore since 2010. As the only polo club in southern Switzerland, the Polo Club Ascona celebrates its 10th anniversary this year! At the tenth edition of the international polo tournament, six teams with more than 70 horses will compete on the grounds of the old Ascona airfield.

Adrenalin-packed polomatches, perfect for the audience to watch from the higher stands into the arena, as well as excellent catering and entertainment have been announced by the organizers. And the international polo community is looking forward to come to beautiful Lago Maggiore from July 12 to 14.

Matteo Beffa, Tournament Director: “The Polo Club Ascona celebrates its first big round birthday – 10 years Ascona Polo Cup! After last year’s modification of the game mode, six international teams will compete again this year. After the Players Party on Friday evening on the idyllic islands of Brissago and the gala dinner on Saturday evening, the Aftershow Party in the Polo VIP Area will be added, where we will celebrate the anniversary. We especially thank the community of Ascona and the tourism organization Lago Maggiore for their annual support and also the loyal team partners and sponsors for the cooperation, who have supported us all the years actively, both on and off the field”.

“It seems to have been yesterday when the adventure of the Polo Club Ascona began”, says Luca Pissoglio, Mayor of Ascona. “The Polo Cup has become an important event for Ascona because its quality and glamour make it a perfect match for a part of the local population. But also and especially the tourists and those who love Ascona because it is different and special, very much like it”.

Nobility for Ability Charity Cup at the Polo Club Domaine de Chantilly: Between a sublime Indian fashion show and a spectacular ‘‘haute école’’ show by Mario Luraschi, the Polo de Chantilly gave a great moment of sport with the final of the Nobility for Ability Charity Cup, a match between two German teams with a victory of Los Nocheros (the Noctambulists).

‘‘Coming to Chantilly is always a challenge for the German teams,’’ said Sebastian Schneberger, the captain of the victorious team. “Here, the fields are bigger and the game is faster than in Germany and, ironically, two German teams were in the final; we know each other well and we were able to take control of the game from the start … fortunately because it was starting to get tight at the end of the match.’’

If, indeed, it is the 7-goaler of Las Hermanitas, Martin Aguerre, who scored the first goal, the Nocheros then dug a significant gap on the first two periods thanks to a goal from his captain and three penalties Valentin Novillo Astrada (6/1). Las Hermanitas would then try to reduce this gap to return to 8/6 by the end of the fourth period. But the fifth chukker resumed on an easy penalty on the spot, 3 meters from the goals, that Valentin Novillo Astrada did not hesitate to transform for Los Nocheros. Louis Jarrige, one of the young hopes of the French polo entered for this Cup by Los Nocheros, then stopped a penalty at an important moment and the last goal of the German Naomi Schröder at the very end of the match could not change this match (9 / 7). ‘‘This is our first big win here in Chantilly”, said a delighted Sebastian Schneberger. “The level of this tournament has been incredibly high and it is all the more beautiful. And that’s for sure: we’ll be back next year at Chantilly for this series of spring tournaments.’’

This day was not only under the sign of India (the team of Chantilly won the match against Jaipur), but also under the sign of the thoroughbred, which, thanks to polo, can have a “second life” after the racetrack. And the best thoroughbred of the day was named Charrua (a 9 years-old grey mare by Calito and Uruguaya), ridden by Valentin Novillo Astrada.

But Charrua has never known racetracks since she was directly oriented towards polo. She was born in Cordoba in a stud farm named La Francia. A predestined name since it is in France that this mare has been dedicated yesterday! The high-level polo continues next week in Chantilly with the PGH Cup … and the woman will be again in the spotlight with a tournament dedicated to the only to them – and there are more and more of them: the Ladies Polo Cup.
