Opening New Avenues for African Agriculture through Innovative Technologies, Start-Ups, and Regenerative Farming Methods and Economic Models
In the heart of western Kenya’s Siaya County, an inspiring success story is unfolding, one that has the potential to reshape the future of agriculture and its related broken food system throughout Africa. MOTHERLAND, an emerging social enterprise, is harnessing innovative approaches to support small-scale farmers while driving sustainable transformations within agricultural communities.
Confronting the Challenges of African Agriculture
While the African continent boasts abundant resources and fertile land, its agriculture sector wrestles with challenges such as poverty, food scarcity, and dependency on foreign aid. Joseph, a farmer from Siaya County, faces seasonal crop losses of up to 65%, compounded by low market prices and a lack of buyers. These difficulties stem from inadequate infrastructure, limited technology access, and insufficient training opportunities.
MOTHERLAND’s Trailblazing Approach
To address these issues, MOTHERLAND launched a pilot project in Siaya County in January 2023. The company connects African small-scale farmers with local start-ups and focuses on regenerative farming methods and sustainable economic models. In just 7 months, MOTHERLAND achieved remarkable results. Collaborating with Kenyan start-ups, they supported 547 farmers to harvest and sell 250,000 kg of sweet potatoes. This previously
untapped potential has already initiated sustainable change.
Overcoming Challenges and Fostering Community Development
One of MOTHERLAND’s most impressive accomplishments is the significant reduction of crop losses from 65% to a mere 10%. These efforts not only led to economic independence within the community but also increased the profit per kilogram of sweet potatoes from 30 Kenyan Shillings to 50 Kenyan Shillings. Moreover, an innovative community fund was established, managed by the community itself, enabling investments for the greater communal welfare.
Inter-Generational Transformation and Future Prospects
MOTHERLAND refuses to rest on its laurels. The newly launched youth program, “Young Earth Guardians,” encourages the adoption of regenerative farming practices and new technologies among future generations. This initiative bridges tradition and innovation and supports 180 children, with numbers growing daily.
Peering into the Future
MOTHERLAND’s mission is far from complete. The company envisions expanding its successful model beyond Siaya County and aims to minimize post-harvest losses not only in sweet potatoes but also in other value chains such as maize, beans, and avocados. This ambitious goal illustrates that MOTHERLAND seeks to make a difference not only locally but on a broader scale.
A Glimpse into the Future: MOTHERLAND’s Commitment to Regenerative Agriculture
MOTHERLAND’s vision transcends Kenya’s borders. The company strives to extend its successful model across the entire continent, fostering sustainable and regenerative improvements in the livelihoods of farming families throughout Africa. This endeavor underscores that the future of Africa rests on the shoulders of no less than 900 million small-scale farmers. This impressive number highlights the scope of responsibility and potential embedded within these agricultural communities.
Africa boasts the lowest CO2 emissions compared to other continents, presenting a promising foundation. With prudent action and by avoiding the mistakes of developed nations, Africa has the opportunity to become a trailblazer in sustainable economic development. As the youngest continent, Africa can chart innovative pathways that transcend traditional growth models, prioritizing both social and ecological well-being.
MOTHERLAND’s ambitious plans and support from organizations like GIZ and the knodel foundation demonstrate that collaborative efforts can indeed effect change. By championing regenerative agriculture and creating an ecosystem orchestrator, they set an example for the world, proving that it’s possible to harmonize growth and responsibility.
The future of Africa may present challenges and opportunities and with organizations like MOTHERLAND, hope prevails. They pave the way for a sustainable and regenerative future that benefits not only farmers but also entire societies. Their journey’s continuation is bound to bring forth inspiring developments and opportunities for Africa and the entire world.
A Partnership for Sustainable Change
MOTHERLAND’s endeavors wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of GIZ and the Knodel Foundation. Moreover, in collaboration with Good24, MOTHERLAND has created an innovative alliance. Unlike traditional insurance brokers, Good24 operates as a nonprofit and could oversee the management of corporate pension schemes (bAV), among other offerings. The nonprofit Good24 gGmbH gladly supports MOTHERLAND’s Africa Initiative with profits derived from insurance commissions. This novel approach facilitates supporting social projects like MOTHERLAND without incurring additional costs or efforts.
United for a Better Future
MOTHERLAND’s success story showcases that collaborative efforts, innovation, and dedicated supporters can indeed catalyze sustainable change. The vision of a thriving African agriculture sector and a stronger community lies within reach. With each form of support, they inch closer to their dreams and actively shape Africa’s future. Visit Good24’s website or book a digital consultation appointment directly with Good24 to learn more and become a part of this inspiring movement.

Eighteen teams, six nations: A record-breaking 2023 edition!
The 23rd edition of the Open de France de Polo (September 1st to 17th, 2023), born with this century, promises to be gigantic. And yet, since the beginning of its history, and even more so since 2020 when the tournament took a new turn, French polo‘s top event has always offered thrilling moments with world-class teams and players.
The apotheosis was reached in 2020 with the anthology game between two of the three current young wonders of Argentine polo, the Castagnola brothers, Barto and Jeta, in a match between Talandracas (France) and Les Lions (Great Britain) which ended with a score that was both overwhelming and extremely close: 14 to 15! But this year‘s French Open is sure to take on a whole new dimension, particularly with a record of 18 teams already entered. Thus, the French tournament outstrips major English ones such as the Queen‘s Cup and the British Open (Gold Cup) in terms of the number of teams entered.
To host all these teams, the Polo Club du Domaine de Chantilly has teamed up with the La Magdeleine club, which will host three of them and, as well as with Sainte-Mesme, who will host part of the tournament in the south of Paris. Some subsidiary cup matches will also be played at La Moinerie, located in the same geographical area. La Magdeleine, winner in 2021, and Sainte-Mesme, winner in 2009, 2011 and 2018, will of course be taking part in this edition of the Open.
Seven 8-goalers in Chantilly!
Beyond the numbers, it‘s the quality of the players that will also mark this 23rd edition, with some of the world‘s greatest professionals, led by Nico Pieres (h8), winner of the most prestigious and famous Argentine Open, which is played in the heart of Buenos Aires, in Palermo, the „Cathedral of polo“, in front of 18,000 spectators. The Argentine Open is reserved for the world‘s top forty players, fourteen of whom will be in Chantilly in September: a first for France!
In addition to Nico Pieres, the young prodigies Juan Matin Zubia (h8) and Rufino Bensadon (h7) will be in Chantilly for the title holder Talandracas, thus presenting the same formidable line-up as last year. Bautista Bayugar (h8, Los Dragones, FRA), La Dolfina players Guillermo Terrera (h8, Eternal J), Alejandro Muzzio (h8, Clinova, UK) and Diego Cavanagh (h8, Brittany Polo) and Facundo Llorente (h8, La Magdeleine, winner of the Franch Open in 2021 and recent Queen‘s Cup finalist) will also be present. Also of note is the return to Chantilly of Facundo Sola (h7), 12 years after his French Open victory with Murus Sanctus and who was a finalist in the Argentine Open in 2013 and 2018.
Six nations will be represented at the 2023 Open de France: Argentina, England (including the legendary Emlor team), Sweden, Germany, Netherlands and, of course, France with thirteen teams.
Women take centre stage
The Women‘s Open is not to be outdone, with the maximum possible number of eight teams already entered! Teams from Germany, England, Luxembourg and, of course, France will be joined by some of the world‘s greatest female players, including British 10-goalers Nina Clarkin and Hazel Jackson, and Argentine 9-goaler Lia Salvo, who is returning to the competition after the birth of her daughter India in April. Year after year, women‘s polo is progressing at lightning speed, and these matches are just as interesting to follow as those of men‘s polo or rather „mixed“ polo as women can take part in all the tournaments, like Dutchwoman Nicky Sen and Frenchwomen Isabelle Larenaudie and professional Elena Venot, who will be seen in the mixed Open de France.
These three weeks of top-level competition on the magnificent facilities of the Polo Club du Domaine de Chantilly are magical. Moments of encounter between the great Argentine players, who are very accessible, and the young French professionals, inspiring interactions, horses that are more and more extraordinary every year, matches every day, in the calm of the early hours of the week or in the excitement of the weekend, with live commentary and re-commentary in the evening in the Orangerie bar (particularly during the convivial ‚Vendredis du Polo‘ with asado and fiesta), parallel tournaments such as the highly competitive Trophée Castel, where you can also see some great players, and, to cap it all, a flamboyant and festive finals day.
The Open de France: The French polo event not to be missed. Access to the grounds is free, even on the days of the semi-finals and finals.

TEAMS
How do they do it? Each year the Swiss Medium Goal at Polo Park Zürich just gets better and better. This year, for the first time, four female players were taking part and nine nations were represented. And the ponies! Given the strength of top-class polo, the pony lines were occupied by strings of equally top-class ponies, form Eduardo Greghi‘s string from Adolfo Cambiaso, over Thommy Gräff‘s power ponies to Ann-Katrin Brändle‘s little Sonadora, having her first medium goal in Switzerland. Immaculately turned out, a credit to both the grooms and owners.
So six well-mounted teams started the games on the Thursday 15 June. Friday was used as a buffer day, and players were able to meet up socially for an asado at the club house on Friday evening.
Saturday saw the teams fight for their spot in the finals. I love the Saturday games and enjoyed a devastating display of speed and skill which promised energy enthused entertainment for Sunday.
Close, closer, closest
Spectators started strolling in for the first game at 10:30 between Hato with Ann-Kathrin Brändle, Stefan Roth, Christopher Kiesel and Manuel Carranza versus Naoo with Sacha Djafarian, Thomas Wolfensberger, Walter Cortez and Andrew Guthrie. Walter Cortez, a battle-hardened, experienced player was the stand-out performer for Naoo but, despite able assistance from his team, was unable to match the combination of Christopher Kiesel and Manuel Carranza. Both Chris and Manu put on a relentless performance and matched Naoo‘s speed all the way. It was a half goal game with Hato coming in victorious 81/2 to 8. Doesn‘t get much closer than that.
High intensity
Midday was approaching, and in the hospitality tent a summer touch was being provided by Ecuadorian Hats who set up their colorful stand beside the Oona Caviar tasing area and ZigarrenKurier with Leno organizing a stylish cigar lounge field-side.
Chill-out music and champagne was the order of the day until, out on the field, the game for third place literally exploded. Seriously, it makes commentating fun when the game is this fast. Los Lobos/Gräff Capital (Thommy Gräff, Sébastien Le Page, Facundo Kelly, Markus Gräff) were up against Polo Club Zug (Aline Harry, Janik Oertli, Usman Ibrar, Fecundo Guevara). Aline, always a force to be reckoned with, was on her favorite pony, Wanda, in the first chukker getting her game on track and being set up for well-paced runs by Janik. Guevara gave us a vibrant performance full of attacking intent, but was matched by the opposite Nr.3, Kelly, whose adventurous style of play was sensational. This was a hard fought encounter but Los Lobos/Gräff Capital found just that bit more power and precision to come in at third place.
Focused and fearless
1pm, 32°C… the crowd left the tent, left their champagne glasses and grabbed their phones, because here were two teams with everything to play for and ready to provide us with a thrilling final.
Team Polo Park Zürich had two of the four female players in the tournament with Morgan Van Overbroek and Katja Grauwiler at positions 2 and 1 – both well mounted and with the character and composure to compete at top level. Martin Podesta directed play from his position as Nr.3, while Segundo Copello raced through the first chukker like a man possessed, before being tested in the second by that well mounted pair Daniel Aegerter and Eduardo Greghi for Team Equilibrium. Francisco Fucci was a dominant Nr.4 when the pressure was on, and able to deliver impressive defense in style.
But keeping the pot boiling for Equilibrium was the young player Manuel Maria Bereterbide, who was able to do it all and at full speed while making it look easy. He had that creative spark, and turned this game into a classic. A joy to watch. Both teams had the energy and quality to take the honors, but it was Equilibrium that had that edge, that intensity, that ability to keep possession of the ball just a bit longer and get it forward and between the posts more often. Massive cheers from the crowd as the final bell sounded and Equilibrium came
in victorious.
A canter past the spectators and both teams were applauded and congratulated.

We watch with great interest what currently is happening in Portugal: The sunny country in the very west of Europe is right now evolving into the new polo hot spot in Europe. POLO+10 gives an overview of the fascinating developments and the most beautiful properties.
Portugal/Comporta – a new polo community arises
Searching for the perfect polo estate in Comporta?
Portugal is probably the most diverse and beautiful country in Europe and also one of the oldest countries in Europe. POLO+10 knows Portugal and especially the Comporta region inside out and offers you the best estates.
About an hour ́s drive due south from colourful, vibrant Lisbon, a region that so far has escaped the hectic crowds of sun-thirsty beach goers and loud party people is just waking up. Comporta is more commonly associated with “Herdade da Comporta”, the 43-kilometer-long strip of land on the Alentejo coast with its seemingly endless sandy beaches languishing under an azure blue sky and traditional white-washed cottages dotted around the unspoilt countryside. With around 3,000 hours of sunshine per year, Comporta has retained its vast, quiet, untouched beauty, unlike the inter- national jet set destinations on the Côte d ́Azur, Costa del Sol and Ibiza.
The potential of this Atlantic west coast region was first discovered by José Manuel Espírito Santo, descendant of a wealthy Portuguese dynasty, who first laid eyes on it from his yacht. He went ashore and shortly afterwards acquired more land in the region. When the Banco Espírito Santo, one of Portugal ́s largest banks, including its owner José Manuel, went bankrupt a few years ago some of the land was acquired by the state. Since then the region together with the seven villages of Pego, Carvalhal, Brejos, Torre, Possanco, Carrasqueira and Comporta has been gently introduced to the type of premium tourism that favours nature conservation, exclusive hotels and holiday homes. The Comporta region is a place of longing as in “saudade” from the Portuguese which implies the longing for a reunion. Endless beaches, sweeping horizons and the sea. Quietly secluded. This place of socalled longing – the new Hamptons of Portugal – has already attracted a number of prominent millionaires who are fascinated by this unique and still almost “secret” beauty spot.
In this touching and incomparable nature, both wide, flat ground as well as the perfect ground conditions offer 100% best conditions for a unique polo destination. Only a stone’s throw from the extensive beaches of Comporta, a paradise for polo enthusiasts will be created, who will find a sunny polo home and the best conditions for their sport here all year round.
This year a new polo destination is being created in Comporta, which will be relevant as a centre for the international sport of polo throughout Europe, if not the whole world. In addition to the new Polo Club, the location and landscape, geographical features and climate are perfect for the establishment of further private polo estancias, polo fields and stables. The polo horses spend the winter here perfectly and it is possible to play all year round.

Barely an hour’s drive south of Lisbon, a new polo destination will make its mark on the sporting map next year. Here we speak to Stefan Maria Gast about this new European epicentre of sport and find out how he is making a great polo vision come true in Alentejo, Portugal.
What does your dream of a new European polo centre look like and what exactly are you planning in Portugal?
I was fascinated by the huge demand from all over the world for a polo destination with the ideal climate that would enable it to be fully active and functioning all year round as well as being easily accessible to all within the safety that Europe offers. So I started looking for the perfect location that ticked all these boxes and found it here in Alentejo, Portugal. In the autumn of 2020 we will open a new, exclusive Polo Club right here which will become the home and hub of the international polo community.
Historically, Portugal has not played a role in global polo.
Not yet. However, there are many reasons why this hasn´t been a decisive factor in the Polo Club we´re planning. For example, over the last four years Portugal has become much more cosmopolitan, having experienced record levels of immigration. More than 20,000 Brazilians alone, most of them of high net worth, have chosen to live in Portugal. Due to the size of the country and the climate, polo is a sport enjoyed actively all year round in Brazil and repeatedly, whilst in conversations with polo experts there they expressed concerns over security in South America both from a safety and financial perspective. They were often inquiring about a location in Europe that offers the right infrastructure and year-round playing opportunities that are currently available in Argentina and Brazil. We are now reacting to this demand.
Yet two attempts to set up a Polo Club in Portugal have already failed in the past.
Yes, that´s true. Two attempts failed about 12 and 8 years ago for good reason. In both instances developers sought to build, what was primarily an ambitious real estate project with a polo club as a “nice to have” add-on, similar to a golf resort. They were destined to fail because the developers in question didn´t have a true understanding and passion for polo at all. Our approach focuses primarily on polo. We will add apartments and villas but they are not the focal point of the project from the outset.
The club is also to become a winter location and training base for the European and international polo elite.
Yes, we will have a polo club in the Alentejo that is active all year round and provide an ideal location for keeping the horses in the winter. In addition to hosting polo clinics and tournaments at medium and high goal level, beginners and polo players who are new to polo will find the perfect introduction to the sport here.
Polo is in most cases also always a ‘family affair’…
Totally. That´s why our Polo Club will benefit from its unique location, endless beaches and its proximity to Lisbon. This is an area that is currently regarded as an absolute insider tip by investors as it´s a destination that ticks all the boxes for everyone. Including those with children.
The icing on the cake – amongst this dreamlike paradaiscal scenery you are also planning a boarding school.
Yes, we are going to set up and build an international boarding school which will offer a high school degree for university entrance. Naturally the students will be taught internationally in all school subjects and at the same time they will have a connection to the Polo Club. They will grow up alongside polo and be very likely to really get into the sport. This is where the next generation of Portuguese polo players will emerge and in eight to ten years´ time we will have a new elite of players. That’s all part of building a Polo Mecca.
The Alentejo is currently experiencing a meteoric rise. And at the same time it is almost untouched.
This area has an infinite amount of land and vast expanses of nature that are totally unique in Europe. In addition to the main Polo Club, there is also plenty of space for private polo activities. The enchanting region of Alentejo has the largest area of undeveloped land in Europe as a result of its history. We are therefore making good use of a unique window of historic opportunity. And then of course, there´s the weather as the region offers optimal climatic conditions all year round, some of which are even much better than in the well-known polo hotspots in Argentina.
Have there been any critics of the project?
We welcome criticism. We´re not afraid of it. In fact, the more, the better. After all, constructive criticism opens ones eyes to potential opportunities as well as possible mistakes and enables one to assess them realistically. Fortunately we have also learned from the mistakes made from the first attempts to found a Polo Club in Portugal. At the same time, criticism is always a question of competition and differentiation. It is about nothing less than having the foresight to see and seize an historic opportunity. And naturally, great visionaries always incite many questions. In our case, in ten years’ time the critics won´t be saying: “If only you´d had the courage to follow your dream“.
The Polo Clubs in Mallorca and in Sotogrande follow a similar approach, namely to be a year-round polo destination in Europe.
Yes of course, Mallorca and also Sotogrande on the Costa del Sol have become important polo destinations in Europe. But at the beginning of 2019 a law was passed in Mallorca, regarding the regulation of water consumption which will jeopardise any further polo activities on the island in the future as it will be difficult to irrigate the polo pitches regularly. I hope that at some point the law will be rescinded so that polo activities in the Balearic Islands will resume. This is my sincere wish for the polo world in general and also to those who have already done a lot for this sport in Mallorca. However, the new water restrictions place an enormous question mark over Mallorca as a potentially serious polo destination right now. In Sotogrande, the beautiful Polo Club has a long and successful history, but I also feel it has passed its peak and I doubt we will see further visionary action with regards to polo in that area going forward.
When and where exactly will the Polo Club in the Alentejo open its doors?
The exact location will be officially announced in January 2020. However, I can reveal that the club will be located in the area between Alcacer do Sal and Comporta and that we are planning to open it in the Autumn of 2020. We already have received registrations and important requests for polo horses from Central Europe which will be stabled here in Winter 2020 and whose owners will play throughout the whole winter on the fantastic polo pitches here in the beautiful Alentejo. With its chic lounges and gourmet restaurant, the clubhouse will be an elegant, relaxing social hub for the polo fraternity at large.
And are there also plans for accommodation?
That’s correct. In addition to an exclusive hotel complex, we also offer villas and small chalets in the polo area. It will be a total work of art, which will blend in seamlessly with its local natural surroundings, wildlife and people. The first step, will be the construction of the entire Polo infrastructure. With great attention to detail, we will concentrate on creating a small paradise for the most important players in the sport – the horses. This is why we are planning the first SPA for polo horses, amongst other things.
Do you think you are in the right place for such a real estate project?
Yes, with absolute certainty, because there will never be a better time. We are in a region that is on its way to becoming the new ‘Hamptons’. You only have to look up who is planning and has already started projects in and around Comporta over the next few years. It all began with the collapse of the Espirito Santo family empire and its subsequent expropriation by the Portuguese state, which only released the family estates for sale onto the market three years ago. Vanguard Properties, which this year was able to acquire the ‘Herdade da Comporta’ estate and will invest 730 million euros in developing their property portfolio, was the first off the starting block by entering the big real estate game. Right after that comes the Discovery Land Company, which last summer bought the land from Costa Terra and invested 510 million euros in resort and villa investments. There are currently a lot of new real estate and tourism projects along the 43 km long Atlantic coast that will be built in the next 15 years. The ‘Ferrado Comporta’ project in Troy with an exclusive resort known as ‘Rosp Corunna’ with three hotels, villas, apartments and a golf course are just two of many other projects planned in the area.
You have already built the legendary Campo Bahia World Cup quarter for the German national team (the later 2014 World Champion) in Brazil in 2014. The challenges there were much more complex and difficult than they are now in Portugal.
Yes, that is indeed true. We realised Campo Bahia in Brazil in just eight months, despite the fact that we had to work through very detailed coordination processes with DFB and FIFA . Campo Bahia was a sensational success and gave the German national team – the future football world champion – the spirit for victory. I am always particularly interested in realising goals and projects that have a deeper, sustainable and meaningful value. Es wurde „das beste WM Quartier aller Zeiten (It became “the best WM quarter ever”)“ Wolfgang Niersbach. This is particularly the case with the new Polo Club in Portugal.
Who are the investors behind your project?
The entire project is being financed by private capital, investment funds and banks and will be completed in February next year. We are currently still open to private investors who share our vision and understand the incredible potential that is emerging in this region.

Designed for the modern woman with style, the exclusive jewelry of Delfina Delettrez Fendi combines classic pieces with modern design in honor of the newly renovated The St. Regis Rome.
Marriott International‘s St. Regis Hotels & Resorts brand has been working with Delfina Delettrez Fendi, the founder and designer of the Delfina Delettrez brand, since this year. Inspired by the recently completed 40 million renovation of St. Regis Rome, Delettrez presents an exclusive limited collection of three selected gold jewellery pieces: an exquisite open necklace, earrings and a double ring with refined details. The Capsule Collection has been available since mid-June and the pieces cost from 1,050 euros.
Jenni Benzaquen, Vice President Europe for Marriott International‘s luxury brands, said: „Delfina Delettrez has an extraordinary aesthetic sense of how past and present can be linked by combining traditional Italian craftsmanship with her modern, unique style. As part of its collaboration with St. Regis, its Capsule Collection perfectly embodies the recent redesign of St. Regis Rome. Delettrez‘s passion for her native Rome and its everlasting esprit has also been incorporated.“ Delettrez is among Forbes Magazine‘s „30 under 30“ and has been nominated for the „Business of Fashion 500“, a list of people who are changing the international fashion industry. The designer is the fourth generation of the Fendi family and founded her company in 2007. Since the launch of her brand, she has developed a unique aesthetic that combines classic goldsmith techniques with innovative, contemporary materials. The result: modern, futuristic jewellery. A lot of heart and soul goes into every design. The designs are implemented in artistic handwork by masters of their trade.
„Rome is a city where contrasts from the past and the present coexist in a unique and harmonious way,“ explains Delfina Delettrez. „The renovation of St. Regis Rome demonstrates the duality of this city by combining an angular, modern look with historical architecture. To usher in this new era for St. Regis Rome, I wanted to create a classic shape with a new, modern twist. I love the idea that each piece can be worn in two different ways – as an expression of the dual character of the house.“
