MVP Nic Roldan of Audi goes for the big hit past Jason Crowder.

„It‘s good to be back on the field,“ Roldan said. „The ankle injury was nothing dramatic but a bit of a nuisance. Today was the first day I felt pretty good. I wouldn‘t say I was 100 percent but I felt good.“

In the evenly-matched fast-paced game, both teams had scoring opportunities to win in regulation.

The lead changed hands 15 times throughout the game with Audi leading by as many as three goals in the third chukker (7-4) and Seminole Casino Coconut Creek leading by two (10-8) in the fifth chukker and two in the sixth chukker (11-9).

Behind Roldan‘s hot mallet, Audi started to reel in Seminole Casino Coconut Creek early in the sixth chukker. Roldan scored at 5:02 to trail by one, 11-10. Two minutes later Roldan scored again to tie the game at 11-11.

Seminole Casino Coconut Creek had the first opportunity to score in the first minute of the game but was unable to capitalize. After Roldan was fouled with 5:15 left he hit a long ball from center field to Phillips who was called off by Erskine who had the clear shot and lofted it over defenders to clinch the game.

„I thought it was really a great game to play,“ Roldan said. „It was open and very few fouls. I thought Seminole Casino had a better day. I think they deserved to win that game today. We got lucky in the end.

„We kept fighting. We just never gave up. They were tough and definitely made us work for that victory. With a little bit of luck and a good set play from midfield it was a good game. It was a fun game to play.“

In addition to Roldan‘s five goals Erskine and Phillips each had three goals and Ganzi added two.

„This has been the best fall season we have ever had,“ Roldan said. „We are playing 16 to 20-goal polo and it‘s very competitive. The weather is amazing and fields are great. We have a bunch of American players here supporting polo. This is really a good stepping stone for what‘s to come in the future.“

WELLINGTON, Fla., November 1, 2021 — On a perfect day for polo, Zahedi Chogan won its first tournament in its fall season debut at Santa Rita Polo Farm.

In an exciting finish, Zahedi Chogan (Sy Zahedi, Jason Crowder, Brandon Phillips, Tommy Biddle) defeated La Indiana (Matthew Gonzalez, Marc Ganzi, Luis Escobar, Jeff Hall), 11-10, on Sunday to capture the Fall Plates final.

The veteran field leader Biddle, playing well on both ends of the field, was named Most Valuable Player. Biddle is among 2022 inductees to the Polo Hall of Fame. A Hall of Fame Induction ceremony is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 18 if conditions allow for social gatherings at the time.

Tommy Biddle of Zahedi Chogan works the ball off sideboards past defender Jeff Hall.

„I think MVP could have gone to anybody on our team today,“ Biddle said. „I‘m happy to be playing here with a bunch of good players. We‘re not difficult to play with, we all play simple polo. I‘m just happy we won.“

In one of the best finals in club history, the well-matched teams battled back and forth. Zahedi Chogan had a two-goal lead (5-3) going into the third chukker. After that, it was anybody‘s game with 6-6, 7-7 and 9-9 ties at the end of the third, fourth and fifth chukkers.

„I knew it was going to be tough because La Indiana played together last week and won,“ Biddle said. „We were a bit unlucky. When we gave up all those fouls it was because we kind of got sloppy defensively. They weren‘t beating us from the field, it was just the foul line. We were just making mistakes and they were capitalizing.“

Zahedi Chogan teammates Jason Crowder and Brandon Phillips work together.

The game‘s outcome came down to the final 4:52 minutes. Phillips gave Zahedi Chogan a 10-9 lead when he won the throw-in and raced downfield to score. Crowder then came up with a big defensive play stopping Escobar‘s goal run. With 3:51 left, Zahedi Chogan fouled giving Ganzi his seventh opportunity to convert an open-goal penalty, tying the game at 10-10.

With 2:41 on the clock, it was Phillips again fighting for possession on the endline. Biddle read the play well and forced a La Indiana blocking penalty. Phillips converted the 30-yard penalty to give his team an 11-10 lead.

In the final two minutes Crowder came up with two key defensive plays to stop scoring threats and Phillips ran out the clock.

Jeff Hall of La Indiana works the ball downfield with Brandon Phillips defending.

„I am ecstatic,“ Sy Zahedi said. „It‘s such a pleasure to play with this caliber of players on both sides. La Indiana is such a phenomenal team. I kept telling my teammates a couple years ago when I started playing outdoor polo I could never dream of being on the same field with these guys. The chemistry and combination for us just worked.“

It was Zahedi Chogan‘s second tournament appearance this fall. They also competed in the Tackeria Invitational where they lost to La Indiana, 9-8, in the semifinal.

„I couldn‘t be more thrilled,“ said Zahedi, a former motocross racer. „This is a dream come true. I just want to play safe polo and contribute to my team.“

Tommy Biddle of Zahedi Chogan receives his MVP plaque from Georgette Escobar.

Zahedi, raised from minus-one to zero goals, has been playing outdoor polo for two years after trying arena polo. He was mentored by Hall of Famer and former 10-goaler Memo Gracida at La Herradura and was a natural.

„The main thing was to learn the game in a safe, controlled environment,“ Zahedi said. „It was trial by fire from four goals to eight goals and jumping to 12 goals very quickly. I had so much fun.“

Said Biddle, „He‘s doing well for a guy who has just gotten into the sport, he‘s doing great.“

Zahedi first played with Crowder at La Quinta in a four-goal tournament and continue to compete together at a higher level. Last month in Santa Barbara, Rancho Polo/Chogan won the Regional President‘s Cup Final with a 14-12 win over Klentner Ranch. Crowder was MVP with 10 goals. It was Crowder who convinced Zahedi to play at Grand Champions.

Newport‘s Gene Goldstein on his way to scoring one of his six goals as umpire Gaston Dorignac looks on.

„I‘m happiest with how much he‘s improved and how well he is playing, „ Crowder said. „I‘m super happy we won. We all had really good chemistry and everybody worked hard for each other. We got Sy down here and he has improved every game by leaps and bounds. He has accelerated his polo to the next level. He‘s got the right attitude and everything that makes a good polo player.“

Added Zahedi, „Everything Jason told me about Grand Champions was true. The fields are amazing, the people are amazing. The caliber of players I am so impressed with.“

The name of the team is the original Persian name for polo. In Iran the game is still referred to as Chogan.

Kris Kampsen of HL Polo breaks loose with the ball.

One of the most amazing moments of the game was Biddle‘s 150-yarder looking to score but bouncing off the goal post instead. „That wasn‘t the plan,“ Biddle said. „The plan was for it to go through.“

Zahedi Chogan got balanced scoring from its lineup. Phillips scored a team-high five goals, Biddle had three, Crowder had two and Zahedi added one.

Grant Ganzi of NetJets goes for the big hit downfield.

Ganzi led La Indiana with a game-high seven goals, all open-goal penalty conversions. Hall had two goals and Escobar had one.

In the semifinals, Zahedi Chogan advanced into the championship with a 9-8 victory over Newport and La Indiana defeated HL Polo, 13-11, in the four-team, single-elimination tournament.

Newport (Gene Goldstein, Juan Bollini, Sugar Erskine, Leo Mandelbaum) won the Fall Plates subsidiary with a 5-3 victory over NetJets (Larry Austin, Santos Bollini, Grant Ganzi, Nic Roldan/Pablo Spinacci) in the third and deciding round robin game.

In the other games, Newport edged HL Polo (Harry Landy, Kris Kampsen, Juancito Bollini, Santi Toccalino), 5-4, and NetJets and HL Polo tied 4-4 in the second game giving Newport a plus-one advantage going into the third and deciding game.

Nic Roldan of NetJets tries to control the ball.

Behind the one-two punch of Goldstein and Mandelbaum, Newport dominated most of the game, 2-0 and 3-1 for a 5-1 advantage going into the third and final chukker. With Newport leading, 4-0, Roldan left the game with an ailing ankle and was replaced by Spinacci. Goldstein led scoring with six goals. Ganzi had five goals.

Fall Plates was the third of five medium goal tournaments. Seminole Casino Coconut Creek won the season-opening Fall Classic and La Indiana won the Tackeria Invitational last weekend. Four high goal tournaments are also scheduled for the fall including the Nov. 3-11 USPA Continental Cup, Nov. 9-14 USPA North American Cup and Nov. 16-21 USPA National 20 Goal.

Tommy Biddle of World Polo League moves in to defend.

Spinacci and Mandelbaum both scored for Barbaroso, while Pulido was responsible for Sebucan’s only goal in the chukker. Barbaroso played a spectacular final chukker, keeping Sebucan off the board while Daniels, Mandelbaum and Spinacci were all able to put the ball through. Unfortunately for Barbaroso, they found their rhythm too late and went down to Sebucan by 10-9.

WELLINGTON, FL, May 22, 2021— Seminole Casino defeated Barbarosa Leather by 11-8 in the first match of the Pedro Morrison Memorial, while Sorrento Polo Team took down Sebucan in the second match of the day by a score of 8-7.

Seminole Casino Coconut Creek (Fran Spinacci, Grant Ganzi, Juancito Bollini, and Alejandro Novillo Astrada) met Barbarosa Leather (Leo Mandelbaum, Justin Daniels, Pablo Spinacci, and Juan Bollini) in the first match of the Pedro Morrison Memorial on Friday morning. Seminole Casino ceded one goal to Barbarosa Leather on handicap.

Justin Daniels knocked in the first goal of the day, but the combination of Alejandro Novillo Astrada and Juancito Bollini looked unstoppable in the second half of the period. Novillo Astrada took control of the ball and passed it to Juancito, who put it through the posts with a near side shot. Sixty seconds later he passed the ball to Juancito again, and Bollini fils took the ball through the posts in two shots. Seconds later Juancito gained control of the ball once more and left it behind for Novillo Astrada, who passed it back for Juancito to complete the hat trick for the chukker with 1:10 left on the clock. The period ended with Seminole Casino Coconut Creek leading 3-2. Barbarosa Leather struck back in the second chukker, working hard to keep Seminole Casino Coconut Creek off the goal. Leo Mandelbaum converted a Penalty 2, while Pablo Spinacci scored a pair of goals that had Bábaroso in the lead 5-3 at the end of the period. The tables turned in the third chukker, with Seminole Casino keeping Barbarosa Leather away from the posts while Novillo Astrada put the ball through. The half ended with Barbarosa Leather leading 5-4.

All eyes on the ball! Leo Mandelbaum is laser focused.

The fourth chukker demonstrated how evenly matched the teams were, with Seminole Casino Coconut Creek scoring first and Barbarosa Leather responding with an answer to maintain their one goal lead each time. Grant Ganzi scored the first equalizer early in the chukker, but Juan Bollini came back with a goal of his own less than a minute later. With 2:10 left on the clock, Juancito Bollini scored with a strong assist from young Fran Spinacci. Leo Mandelbaum found the posts with a spectacular angled shot, but with seven seconds left to play, Alejandro Novillo Astrada tapped the ball in to end the period with a 7-7 tie. Seminole Casino gained the upper hand in the fifth chukker, drawing ahead on a Penalty 3 conversion from Grant Ganzi and Novillo Astrada scoring to solidify the lead. Despite a well-placed shot on goal from Pablo Spinacci, Seminole Casino led 9-8 at the beginning of the final chukker. Barbarosa Leather lost the momentum they had enjoyed earlier, failing to get on the board, and goals from Fran Spinacci and Alejandro Novillo Astrada won the game for Seminole Casino Coconut Creek with a final score of 11-8.

In the second match of the day, Sebucan (Gene Goldstein, Pablo Pulido, Tomacho Pieres, and Sugar Erskine) took the field against Sorrento Polo Team (Federico Parker, Tito Gaudenzi, Marc Ganzi, and Nic Roldan). Secbucan ceded three goals to Sorrento on handicap.

Sebucan seized control of the field early in the first chukker and Gene Goldstein drew first blood with 5:43 on the clock. Nic Roldan fired a powerful shot downfield that was snatched off the doorstep by Sugar Erskine, but he blasted the ball through the posts in a similar shot on the next play at just under four minutes. Neither team was able to find the posts again and the period ended with Sorrento Polo Team leading by 4-1. Pablo Pulido and Marc Ganzi each put the ball through in the second chukker, which ended 5-2 in favor of Sorrento Polo Team. Goldstein put another goal on the board in the third chukker while a strong defense from Sebucan kept Sorrento from scoring. The half ended with Sorrento Polo Team in the lead by 5-3.

The fourth chukker played out much like the third, with Sorrento Polo Team still unable to make it past Sebucan to score. Tomacho Pieres put a goal on the board to narrow Sorrento Polo Team‘s lead to one goal at 5-4. The pentultimate chukker was Sorrento Polo Team‘s finest six-and-a-half minutes, as it was the only chukker in which they outscored Sebucan. It was Marc Ganzi they had to thank, as he converted a Penalty 2 and put the ball through from the field. Sugar Erskine held up the side for Sebucan, and the period ended with Sorrento Polo Team leading by 7-5.

Erskine scored again in the sixth chukker and with two minutes on the clock Sebucan could see the win within their grasp. However, they failed to capitalize on the opportunity. With just five seconds remaining on the clock, a Penalty 6 safety saw Tomacho Pieres tie the score at the buzzer and send the game into overtime. In a sudden death seventh chukker, with 3:05 left on the clock, Nic Roldan capitalized on a broken play and took the ball to goal to win the day for Sorrento with a final score of 8-7.

The Final of the Pedro Morrison Memorial will take place on Sunday May 23 at 11:30 am. The subsidiary game, Just For The Fun Of It Cup will be at 10:00 am, where Sebucan will meet Barbarosa Leather. Both games will be streamed live on ChukkerTV.

The first chukker of the final started with both teams playing at a fast pace and making few fouls, although the only score in the period came on a Penalty 5 from the spot tapped in by Kris Kampsen. With both teams trying hard to score in the second chukker, the whistle sounded more frequently. Santos Merlos converted a Penalty 2 after White Birch fouled in front of the goal, while Kris Kampsen also scored from the penalty line to put White Birch ahead 2-1. Merlos scored on a spot hit to end the period with Woodmere ahead by one goal.

The third chukker was all about Woodmere. Not only did they succeed in keeping White Birch away from the uprights but Merlos scored three goals, one with an impressive shot from 80 yards. Henry Porter made a coast-to-coast run with 46 seconds left on the clock to end the half with Woodmere in the lead by 6-2.

White Birch made a breathtaking comeback in the fourth chukker. Kampsen racked up another three goals, two on penalties, before Merlos found the uprights with 2:47 left on the clock. Kampsen made a final shot on goal to end the chukker in a 7-7 tie.

WELLINGTON, FL, April 14, 2021— Smithfield Farms defeated Rafool Polo by 8-7 yesterday to capture the title in the Madelon Bourdieu Memorial 6 Goal.

Smithfield Farms (Craig Callen, Bauti Crotto, Julio Ezcurra, and John Klopp) met Rafool Polo (Raymond Rafool, Nico Harriot, Henry Porter, and Gussie Busch) yesterday in the final match of the Madelon Bourdieu Memorial 6-Goal Final.

Barely 30 seconds into the match a crossing foul sent Julio Ezcurra to the penalty line, but in a bit of bad luck the shot went wide. That first whistle set the tone for the chukker, with Henry Porter scoring two goals on penalties for Rafool and Ezcurra scoring one from the line. Gussie Busch put the ball through from the field, while Bauti Crotto knocked in the final goal to end the period with Smithfield trailing 3-2. Henry Porter converted a Penalty 3 to take Rafool up to 4 goals on the board, while Bauti Crotto converted a Penalty 4. Busch found the posts again, ending the half with Rafool still in the lead at 5-3.

Rafool continued to play a strong game in the third period, and back-to-back goals from Porter put Rafool ahead by 7-3. With 48 seconds left on the clock, Crotto evaded Gussie Busch to score an important fourth goal for Smithfield. The fourth chukker was a textbook illustration of how quickly the tables can be turned in polo, as Smithfield came back with a vengeance. Smithfield won the first bowl-in and after a sword fight with Gussie Busch, Crotto took possession of the ball and worked it back to goal. After a near-miss by Henry Porter, Crotto scored again with 2 minutes on the clock and narrowed Rafool’s lead to one goal. At 1:07, Julio Ezcurra got out in front of Gussie Busch to score the equalizer. The horn sounded with the teams tied and the match went into overtime. It took two minutes of back and forth play before Julio Ezcurra got out in front to score the winning goal.

Bauti Crotta was named the MVP of the match with six goals to his credit, while La Suerte took the Best Playing Pony title.

The Memorial is played to honor Madelon Bourdieu, mother of Grand Champions Polo Operations Director Juan Bollini. Bourdieu, who passed away in 2009, came from a family with a strong polo tradition and was a player herself. The Bourdieu family has made significant contributions to the sport and founded two clubs in Argentina. The first Memorial, played six years ago, was won by a team including Juan Bollini, Santos Bollini, and Grant Ganzi. Says Bollini, “I’m touched that Marc and Melissa Ganzi were so kind and named this tournament for my mother. She worked hard to keep the tradition of polo alive in our family and inspired me to become a polo player.”
